Who is getting your costume money?

I am really liking Element's slogan "do not gamble with your costume money", maybe not for the reasons they intended, however I do think with more new bands coming unto the Carnival scene this year competition will be stiff! Some masqueraders will take the gamble to wait for their favourite band to launch, even while fabulous costumes tantalize them. Others might register in a new band just to secure a spot in a section they love, waiting for other bands to launch before deciding on which band they will play with. Then there are masqueraders who have no loyalty to any one band and will play in a costume of their heart's desire whether it is a new band or not. Not to mention there are masqueraders who play mas in the band their friends are playing in/have chosen, regardless of what their personal choice might be. And of course we have the die hard loyalist who will unwaveringly support their favourite band, no matter what or who comes along. I think it is not the MASQUERADERS taking the gamble but the BANDS!

At this stage I have no idea which bands will sell out or not; though a few are boasting that their friends and supporters have already secured spaces in the band, costumes unseen. Price is going to be a major factor in many people's decisions I think;Kaotic has stated all their costumes will be under $3000.00, I wonder if that includes frontlines? While Spice has given a price range between $2300.00 and $4500.00; I have no idea what Evolution's prices are. For sure I am expecting TRIBE to raise prices, again, and Island People to price their costumes in the same range as TRIBE's; I am guessing regular costumes might range from $3000.00 to $3500.00, frontlines from $4000.00 to $5,500.00/$6000.00. This is just my guess based on the steady increase in costume prices since 2004.

With both Kaotic and Spice starting registration this week, TRIBE's launch on Saturday followed by Elements, then Harts, D Krewe and Island People 3 weeks later it seems as if some bands are ahead of the race while others will have to play catch up! Why is no one launching the weekend of August 2nd, I wonder? Secretly I wish Island People would launch then so that masqueraders can have most of their choices laid out before them; not to dismiss the other bands that will also be launching in August but the two main band launches everyone looks forward to are TRIBE and Island People!

And while I am 100% sure that I know which band will be getting my money for 2009, many bloggers are undecided! For sure things have gotten interesting with new bands in the mix! So, which bands are you gambling on playing with for Carnival 2009 or are you placing your bets on the tried, tested and true? Leave your comments and vote in the poll!

I am one of those masqueraders who plays in the band with the costume that calls them.

And so far Peppercorns/Spice is screaming my name!
I dreamt myself in that costume last night down to my boots! LOL.

But I will be sitting back and waiting to see what the band I played with this year has to offer.

TRIBE all the way for me. Playing with TRIBE is not a gamble because I know what i am getting (great customer service, amazing costume, hottt fellas to serve as eye candy, great atmosphere on the road etc etc).

Admittedly, signing up with Silver Mist for 2008 was a gamble as it was the first time I went with an outside designer. But lesson well learned. I'll never again "gamble" my money by going with the outside designers.

Happy Choosing!!

This year was my first year playing mas in Trinidad, I played with Evolution and as a result have NO loyalty or affiliation with them. So this year I am just looking for a costume I fall in love with at first sight.

I have a costume in mind and like Afro Chic I started visualising mi boots and ting. But I will wait for Tribe and Elements...not so much IP as I know the price will be SKY high.

i have made the crazy decision to play TRIBE and SPICE...I have too much loyalty to TRIBE to not play with them

I find this is too annoying having 3 bands to chose from (Tribe, Spice and Elements) as I have no clue which of my friends/family are playing with which band. Then Spice registration is this week and Tribe launches this week but as I have no TLC card dont want to take a risk.

I may just pay downpayment on the spice costume and pray that if I get in to Tribe I can sell it off easily.

Can you say TRIBEEEEEEEEE!!! I love my Tribe better than my BF...lol. Tribe can come out with two leaves for the breast and one "south of the border" and I will be there with my depsoit & TLC card in hand asking when do I register.

I can't wait for Sunday morning Saucy you better have everythnig up because my laptop will be with me at the hairdresser.

i'm difinitely undecided at this point.

having had a fantastic TRIBE experience last year i'm probably partial to them. i will not be able to go back to a non-all-inclusive band.

but i'm really impressed by Spice and i'm curious about Elements so i guess by August 9th I'll know for sure!

Well I hve been a TRIBEr for the last 4 years BUT as their prices have been steadily increasing year after year, I fear I will soon be priced out of TRIBE. I refuse to pay *almost double what my airfare from the US costs* for my costume, esp. since I only wear my costume on Tuesday!!!

I have my eye on Spice now because I am hearing that prices for backline in TRIBE this year will be $3500+ so dem costumes will have to be pretty fabulous to get me to drop $600 US for ONE day. *sigh*

I am loyal to TRIBE, but with all this TLC madness I may have to jump with another band. Hoping it wont come to that, but keeping my fingers crossed!

This year the bets go with the most reasonable costume between kaotic and elements...spice look like they already start with the politics with sections being sold out etc. Although Tribe is very organized and has an established reputation this TLC nonsense and inevitable price increase make them unappealing to me. I just want a hassle free registration without any fight down. And btw, should Evolution be even considered an option?

I'm a Triber by nature, I'm leaning towards Kaotic for 2009.

We'll see what happens on the 26th.

Allyuh, MacFarlane coming with "Africa" (expect some additional words with dat) next! It's cloth, nakkedness, and the REL bling: blood diamonds! Diamonds are Forever! Is MAS in d place!

There is no way I am not playing Africa (since I played India and I am DOUGLA), unless another band could give me something amazing to play. Hell o..."300" King Xerxes, if yuh dare. Fellas ah tired and ah tired of them damn surfer shorts! Designers step up yuh games for MEN!

My vote is Brian MacFarlane, and dat ain't no gamble ;) All in! Pay to see meh hand!

LOL @ dougla_1

I've played with Tribe twice and had a good time. And like quiksilver, I not too sure I could handle a non-all-inclusive experience at this point. But Spice impressing meh bad bad with those costumes and with how they moving so far. So we'll see...

Mind you, I not even sure I coming to Trinidad for Carnival, but best to lay plans as a in case!

Well I am not loyal to anyone. Played with Evolution this year but ah know that ah not going back dey. I waiting on a costume with the wow factor. Out of all the bands launched so far Spice has my vote. Still waiting for the others..hopefully I doh flip flop too much till i end up with no costume...lol.

Saucy...any word on that Oracle band that was meant to launch last year??

Yes this is madness costumes coming like shoes now, people have to step up their game all the bands who was playing the ass all the time watch how the going to buck up now. lol.....

I have no idea who to play with my main point is I'm not willing to dig out meh eye to buy a costume so between the bands that I like Spice ,IP and maybe Kaotic whoever is priced competitively I will give a chance. I agree with cute dougla Spice like they already start the politics nonsense they should be careful, as a new band they should try to maintain a professional standard and be as objective as possible. Spice girls don't want to end being like a little stuck up cult.

I must say I am not a fan of two Spice sections selling out before registration starts either. If you plan to do that, then dont show the costume that isnt for the public to choose from.

I'm abroad and plan to bring many first time friends. My first choice would be Tribe, I like Spice and I Elements seem to have a popular line-up. But I cant wait til August 8 on Elements - I'm sure Tribe will sell out by then! I'm waiting to see where my friends are playing too.

Elements and/or Spice.

Tribe for sure! Why? Service, service and more service. Tribe IS NOT PERFECT but you know what they try to fix any issues that arise to the best of their ability. What more could a paying mas player ask for?
