Spoylt

Ok, I know this has absolutely nothing to do with Carnival, but I got my new Victorias Secrets Christmas Catalogue and saw this lingere set that is part of their "Spoylt" line. My mother took one look at it and said "That looks like allyuh TRIBE costume", so I guess it kinda has something to do with Carnival ha!ha!

But, I find the skirt is a wicked idea for Monday wear!! If you are handy with a sewing machine or even a glue gun, pick up a yard of beaded fringe or measure how many inches your hips are and buy that amount at Samaroos (if you live in Trinidad) and about a yard and a half of wide satin ribbon, more if you want the extra pieces to be longer. To get the wide sash in the photo you can buy satin fabric and make the sash, then sew or hot glue the fringe to one end of the sash, leaving the ends to tie! See how easy that was! I just saved you $268.00....and that is in U.S. dollars too both!

Costumes and Prices over the Years

I thought it would be interesting, to take a look at the prices of costumes over the years, tracing the evolution of the all-inclusive experience from Island Events section in Poison to TRIBE for 2007. From my observation, costume prices for the popular bands, TRIBE and Island People have increased costumes by 100% comparing prices in 2000 to 2007. That is an average increase of 14.28% each year over the course of 7 years; the inflation rate in Trinidad for 2005 was 6.8%.

While other bands, such as Trini Revellers , show an increase in price which can be as marginal as 30% (Rugeri for instance), other sections reflect a price increase of 75% since 2000. Also, take note that in 2000 the sections I have listed were costume only; I could not find a price for any all-inclusive section for 2000. However, in 2001 I can see the foundation was set with Island Events all-inclusive package for the other sections to follow. Galvanize really upped the ante with the long list of extras that their package included, having never played with Galvanize I can only guess that they did deliver on those promises. It is obvious that as the bands added more and more perks to the all-inclusive package so too did the prices continue to rise.

That brings us to TRIBE today and their all-inclusive package. What I have come to realise, and maybe some people have not, is that apart from the costume and all-inclusive package, we the masquerader pay for all the niceties and extras that comes along with TRIBE. When I complain that other mas camps are hot, that their facilites are not up to my standard or that people waiting to register have to stand outside in the hot sun while I was sitting at Cascadia in air-conditioned comfort, well all those "luxuries" are what I pay for in addition to an excellent time on the road on Monday and Tuesday. Knowing this, the price of my costume is worth it to me, while to others they are quite content with their mas camp having no air conditioning or not having "cool zones" and wee wee trucks on the road if it means their costume price will be cheaper.

Maybe I am a little too " stush" for some people, maybe I am channeling my inner Diva or I just like myself too much and always think I deserve the best, but these are probably all the same reasons why I will not go to WASA fete but I will go to Amnesia. I work hard for my money and enjoy spending it in ways that please me, not to please other people.

If you want to check out all the following prices yourself, have some fun using the Way Back Machine which is a website that lets you browse archived web pages, now you guys know my secret for finding all those photos of old Carnival Costumes. Just type in www.poison.co.tt or www.pleasurescarnival.com or even www.hartscarnival.com and see what pops up.
