No news on the Island People front...

Well I tried calling today, Saturday the 9th, as instructed on the voicemail at Island People's camp and I got the same recording all day. No news on when registration or costume viewing will start.

I was in Port of Spain this afternoon and passed by the mas camp, there seemed to be some activity as the gate was opened and lights were on inside. Also, they have done a makeover, the front wall is painted with a desert scene and a huge Sahara banner hangs from the porch. I can only believe they are getting ready to open sometime soon. If anyone has more news, drop me a comment or email.

30% Sold Out

So I am reading my online newspaper as usual and found this interesting article on the Dream Team's upcoming launch from the Trinidad Guardian.

The Dream Team Carnival Committee will officially launch its Carnival 2007 presentation—Rhythm Nation—on September 16 at the Trinidad Country Club, Maraval.

Formed out of the now dissolved Poison, this new band brings some of the more successful producers of its predecessor together with some new exciting faces from other bands both in T&T and abroad. Local producers include Rick Cooper, Niki Luke, Vindra Sooklal, Adam Mckell, Wendell Newallo, Sky Entertainment, South Side Events and Paul Singh.

Canadian Louis Saldenah, one of the most successful bandleaders for Caribana, has joined ranks with the Dream Team, together with Earl Beckles and Monica Carrington, who both produce successful bands for Labour Day Carnival in New York. All this is in keeping with the Dream Team’s mission of “Taking Carnival to the World.”

Rhythm Nation focuses on the complex diversity of our culture as it relates to song, music and dance. Sections with names like: Eco Rhythms, Chutney Bacchanal and Samba Fever will be heating up the streets of Port-of-Spain come C2K7.

The band will host a total of 15 sections and will be catering for 2,500 masqueraders. Bandleader Paul Singh goes on record as saying that although the presentation has not yet been officially launched, approximately 30 per cent of the band is already sold out from the existing database of its producers. He further advises all masqueraders interested in playing with this new band to contact the administrative crew at 756-2449, 722-7319, 684-3693, or 753-0286 to secure their costumes early as the band will not be going over the stipulated number of 2,500.

For the launch, gates open at 9 pm and costume show time is 11.30 pm. Music will be supplied by Imij &Co, Associate Degree, Hurricane George, Syndicate, Ezel & John Boy and new soca band Kaotik.

See the part highligthed in red, 30% of the band is already SOLD OUT according to the bandleader and the band has not even launched as yet. And when rumors circulate that both TRIBE and Island People have pre-registered masquerders you hear alot of talk about how it is not fair.

The reality is that this happens with all bands, common sense will tell you that section leaders will have loyal customers, family and friends who want to play in their section and they will be allowed to pre-register certain people. Each band I think, has a stipulated amount of people they can pre-register least the entire section is sold out before registration opens, so if the section has 250 people, 5o of that might go to the section leader for pre-registration. I know if my sister or cousin was bringing a section in a band I was not waiting like everyone else to register and that is one of the perks of paying "band fees" so I am glad to see a bandleader openly state that it happens.
