WEE INTERNATIONAL PINK CARNIVAL MONDAY 2011

On Carnival Monday 2011, Wee International will make history. For the first time, Wee International will dedicate its Carnival Monday presentation to Breast Cancer Awareness in an all pink presentation.

Pink Carnival is the brainchild of Giselle “The Wassi One” Blanche, the newest member of the Wee international family. Giselle has embarked on an all out Breast Cancer Awareness campaign as a result of her participation in the 2010 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk in her home city of Miami, Florida. She was invited by attorney Marlon Hill and his wife Carla, a 3 year breast cancer survivor. They invited Caribbean Americans to come out and show support with their carnival headpieces on their team amicably known as D’ Limers. Giselle was so moved by the experience that she decided to embark on her very own campaign known as Pink Carnival.

In broadening the scope and reach, she decided to use her new home in Wee International as another vehicle to spread the important message. Giselle states, “the goal is to raise awareness and encourage women to get checked by any means necessary. Carnival is such a powerful marketing and advertising machine. It’s the perfect time to spread the message.”

Bandleader of Wee International, Rickie Davidson stated, “Wee International is more than just your average band. We are a band with a purpose and realize the opportunity that we have to make a difference. We will demonstrate that on Pink Carnival Monday 2011.”

Panorama Semi Finals Today and North Stand Tickets Are SOLD OUT!

The most anticipated Panorama Lime takes place today at the Queens Park Savannah. I am sure right now pots of pelau are bubbling on the stove, ice is chilling for the coolers, salt prunes are soaking in tequila, all varieties of homemade mixed drinks are being bottled and the real Panorama aficionados are lining up their posse to head down to the Savannah early to secure their spot. This year Panorama patrons return to the North  and Grand Stands while the bands will perform on the brand new Savannah Stage.

The only thing that could dampen the mood today is if you are one of the thousands of Panorama Patrons left without a ticket to the North Stand! In the history of my attending Panorama at the Savannah, and I have been going to Panorama Semifinals when it was called Pan Prelims and the entrance fee was $20.00TT, I have NEVER heard of tickets being sold out a day in advance. Imagine to my surprise when I heard yesterday at around midday that tickets to the North Stand were indeed sold out!

Rumours started flying as people went into panic mode. One version said that the Fire Services made Pan Trinbago print 3000 LESS tickets owing to safety concerns, others said that North Stand tickets were being held back because tickets to the Grand Stand were not selling and yet another allegation was that Pan Trinbgao sold tickets to all the "party crews" that populate the North Stand FIRST so the people who really want to hear Pan and not be part of the lime are out of a ticket because of the "bandwagonists". Whatever the reasons at this moment 3 members of my own posse are now without a ticket for the North Stand as they were planning on buying their ticket at the Savannah as they have always done every single year.

I am the lucky one who managed to secure a ticket to the North Stand in advance but the reality is that my friends now have to face the scalpers, who I am sure have a plethora of tickets to sell at an inflated price, or hope that by some miracle Pan Trinbago finds some tickets to sell at the Savannah today. To say that this has left a really sour taste in our mouths is an understatement. I have been a Panorama patron for over 14 years, missing out on Panorama only once during this period.  I have watched the changes that have come over Panorama from the days we went in free, walking with our own cooler packed with drinks and a buffet of food in Styrofoam containers, to today where tickets to the North Stand cost more than the Grand Stand at a whopping $300.00TT, add a Pan Lime costing an additional $150.00 - $200.00TT and you have turned Panorama in the North Stand into an all inclusive affair complete with tents and banners for the"Crews" !

While I  am not one to frown upon change, I mean it is the one constant thing in all our lives, I am just saddened by the fact that I hear people saying they are going to Panorama today and they hope they don't hear too much noise or hear too much pan!  People who just  want to wear their homogeneous  "crew" t shirts and tank tops, who could not tell you which band is on stage or what song is being played because they are imbibing copious amounts of liquor while waiting for the rhythm section to start up. And those people are the ones with a ticket!

On that note my friends and I will be heading down to the Savannah in a few hours time with some optimism or else check me by the gate, I will be scalping my ticket for the current rumoured going rate of $1000.00TT to some fool who is going in with ear plugs !
