Two More Months To Band Launch Season.. Let's Stir Things Up!

With all the secrecy surrounding  band launch season for Trinidad Carnival 2011, I mean we are still awaiting confirmation on themes from TRIBE, Spice and the name of the new band, it is amazing how information still seems to come my way when least expected. So, time to let the rumours fly!

Sources have confirmed that Island People Mas had their costume viewing yesterday and a blue costume by a veteran designer was voted favorite. Contrary to earlier information Diane Hunte will be doing designs for Island People Mas 2011 after all, that is if her costumes make the final cut which takes place tomorrow. Colours to look out for, apart from blue, are black and silver, a "space peacock", purple& pink and cream & silver. Thus far feedback about the costumes are that they are nice, but expect Island People to crank things up for their launch.

In TRIBE news, a little birdie has informed me that the Production Manager and Assistant Production Manager have both flown the coop and migrated to another band! Oh Vindra, you will be missed. Word is that producers have also allegedly left TRIBE owing to the fact that they are fed up of being "underpaid". In TRIBE costume news seems like Super Mo Mo is back in ripping form. All preliminary reports indicate that her costumes are all looking pretty SUPER! I was told to expect "different" and "amazing" from TRIBE for Carnival 2011 and to keep my eye out for the pewter and white. Also, guess which designer is doing an African Warrior? Here is a hint, this will probably be the most accessorized section in the band. Looking forward to seeing them all as I have very high expectations for TRIBE 2011 with all the hype surrounding preliminary costumes.

Spice is bringing new designers to the band, at least 4 sections will not be designed by Richard and Anthony Productions with six new designers doing in house designs for Carnival 2011....interesting. I was told materials, custom designed by the band leader, are on their way from China. Spice needs to play catch up since both TRIBE and Island People are already doing prototypes.

As for the new, yet to be named band, rumored to be called "Sugar", word is the theme is going to be a celestial one... of sorts. Of all the  BBF (bikini, beads and feathered) bands this is the one I am looking forward to seeing costumes from the most. A "dream team" of creative advisers, all very experienced designers with a history of fabulous costumes over the years, will be doing designs for this band. Since they are all some of my favourite designers , this should be very very good! Think out of the box.

I am still awaiting answers to my question on whether or not TRIBE will indeed be doing two bands for Carnival 2011, if they have heeded their masquerader's call for a smaller band, the jury is still out on this one. Something tells me though, that maybe we will see some changes from TRIBE 2011, guess we have to wait and see!

Vegas Carnival Debuts New Costumes

After the negative feedback over the cost of costumes advertised for Las Vegas Carnival so far, new costumes have made it unto the website. Called "Viva Las Vegas" these costumes have no band affiliation though I heard they were designed by Sonia Mack.

One has to wonder if these costumes, priced between $500  to $650.00US came about because potential masqueraders balked at the exorbitant $1200.00US to play in recycled costumes; which came first, the chicken or the egg?!
