Please Sign The Petition Against The Ban on Wee Wee Trucks

The Trinidad Express  featured an article on  Sunday December 12, headlined "Taking Back Carnival for Ordinary People" where it is quoted that Minister of Arts and Multiculturalism, Winston Peters, expressed that wee wee trucks will be removed for Carnival 2011. The article did not state what the Government planned for alternative restroom facilities for masqueraders.

To this end one masquerader has started a petition against the ban and is hoping to acquire at least 1000 signatures, your help in reaching this goal is needed. Sign HERE.

We, the citizens, visitors and well-wishers of the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (both locally-based and abroad), are dissatisfied with the Minister's move to ban the use of portable toilet facilities, (referred to colloquially as "wee-wee" trucks) by private bands on the parade route of Port-of-Spain, which is proposed to take effect for 2011. These decisions were made public by an article in the Trinidad Express without any indication of proper reference, social research or detailed consultation or planning towards a suitable alternative that would seek the best interest, safety or convenience of both masqueraders and non-masqueraders participating in the Carnival Celebrations carded for March 7th and 8th 2010.

We are also appalled by and staunchly opposed to the total absence of security intended for "The People's Band", also outlined in the aforementioned article. This brainchild of this ruling Government, which is meant to reincorporate the values and traditions on which Carnival was founded, is poorly planned, and places the security of all participants in the Carnival Celebration into question, as there is no mention of planned security projects to work cohesively with the projected increase in participants.

While these 2 propositions stand to "take back Carnival for 'ordinary' people", they clearly do not represent a holistic approach in combating the astronomical numbers in the crime statistics, which has hit yet another plateau for 2010. We ask that such decisions not be autonomously made by the Minister, but he chooses a more utilitarian approach that incorporates mutual consultation with the Minister of National Security, the Police Commissioner and other governmental and non-governmental parties who seek the best interest of Trinidad and Tobago, its cultural promotion, its diverse people, its touristic visitors, and its social and political reputation on the international stage.
