My twitter stream has been going crazy with @idriselba fever since he announced on Twitter today that Danny Glover has invited him to Trinidad Carnival!? Is he really coming? Will he be one of the celebrities at Hyatt's Ultimate Lime Fete? Which Band is he going to play in? And most importantly how will he fend off all those ladies already in a frenzy at this news? Only time will tell, but I do agree, he will look really good in TRIBE Masai Warriors!

The Budget Friendly Fete List
If you are a fan of the Trinidad Carnival Diary fanpage on Facebook you would have noticed that yesterday I decided to start a list of Semi and All Inclusive events that are all priced under $500.00TT. This compilation is for those of you looking for another option to the premium and consequently premium priced events.
With most all inclusive fetes starting at $550.00TT and maxing out at $1200.00TT the sentiment is that patrons are being priced out of certain events, I mean there are only so many fetes one can afford unless you have a generous inheritance or benefactor or you went into debt! I am sorry but I do not do Carnival on credit but I do budget!
Please note that not all of the following fetes are fully inclusive, some include light refreshments and/or drinks with the price of your ticket while there are a few that are fully inclusive. Hopefully I will have more fetes to add this list, more "budget friendly" fetes just adds to the choices for patrons. Click on any of the flyers for more information and enlarged view. If you know of a fete that is semi or all inclusive priced under $500.00TT please send me the information and flyer to be added to this list , email: trinidadcarnivaldiary@gmail.com

People's Band To Parade Only On Carnival Monday
According to today's Express Newspapers more plans for the People's Band were revealed by NCC Chairman Kenny De Silva yesterday:
This was disclosed by Chairman of the National Carnival Commission (NCC), Kenny de Silva, yesterday.
"What we have gotten for the People's Band in Port of Spain is a level of interest from some of the large steelbands, such as the WITCO Desperadoes and Exodus. They want to play for the people," De Silva said.
The People's Band will play on Carnival Monday only, crossing the stage in Port of Spain, Chaguanas, Mayaro and San Fernando.
The public can expect to be informed of registration details through the media next week, said De Silva.
A cut-off date for registration will also be advertised next week.
"We will want to get an idea of the numbers as early as possible, because music and security and so on have to be planned according to the number of people in the bands," De Silva said.Players in the People's Band will be free to wear their own costumes, as the concept of the band remains one of self-expression, one of the true meanings of Carnival.
"People can wear their micro-bikinis if that is what they want," De Silva said.
I wonder if someone from the NCC has been reading this blog, because several of my reservations upon hearing about the People's Band namely registration of masqueraders and security have been addressed. And people thought I was crazy for bringing those points up! Interesting developments. So, what do you think about the People's Band turning into effectively a post J'ouvert Monday ONLY mas?

What's On Your Carnival Bucket List?
Outlish Magazine recently published a Trini Bucket List, the top 10 things every Trinbagonian should do. Which got me to thinking about my own personal Bucket List as it pertains to Carnival. Even though Carnival is something I have been actively taking part in since I was 5 years old ,and some people might think it is just doing the same thing over and over, there are actually still experiences that I have never had for Carnival that I would love to do before I expire. So, what are the top 10 Carnival must dos before you kick the bucket? Here are mine:
- Lead my section as an Individual Section Leader.
- Wear a traditional Indian costume with full war bonnet headpiece and bustle.
- Play mas in two different costumes in two different bands on both Carnival Monday and Tuesday .
- Party every weekend from the start of the Carnival season.
- Design my own costume.
- Be a Jab Molassie for J'ouvert.
- Skip Trinidad Carnival and go to Rio for their Carnaval
- Get featured on the front page of a Carnival magazine.
- Go to a Machel Montano Alternative Concert.
- Make it until the very last lap on Carnival Tuesday!

Trini Posse Presents Eye Candy...
So, we have yet another band entering the Carnival arena for 2011.Making their debut as a medium band is Trini Posse (Not to be confused with the other Triniposse) with their presentation entitled "Eye Candy". Isn't it amazing that this band is providing Monday Wear and matching pouches for the ladies when other , more established, bands do not? I am wondering who the band leaders and committee members are behind this band, however their facebook profile does not give more information, time for a Fanpage, Group Page or website, don't you think?
Anyway here is some more about the band:
TriniPosse is a group of young entrepreneurs and cultural enthusiasts. The band is about creating a constructive impact with its own innovations, elegance and style that appeal to avid Masqueraders.

• Our Carnival Band stands out because of our prices and vibrant/beautiful costumes. The prices are favorable to anyone on a fixed budget. We cater for the people who always had a desire to play mas but were restricted due to the high cost of costumes.
• Our Committee consists of highly intelligent individuals, who possess a pulsating passion towards the spirit and season of Carnival.
• TriniPosse is about a feeling of family away from home. When you're chippin' down the road, TriniPosse provides the comfort and warmth of persons emitting a love like no other band with the following:

Security officers fully engaged in the holding of the ropes for the safety of our Masqueraders on both Carnival Monday and Tuesday.

Bringing You Up To Speed
New Year lots to talk about, 60 days to Carnival the countdown is on!
Monday Wear
Island People has hinted what their Monday Wear option is going to be:
We know that everyone is asking what are we getting for Monday wear. Since we can't let the cat out of the bag just yet, what we can say is this: Comfortable, sexy, modern, think shades of gray and silver. Ladies, you can accessorise with any colour of your costume.
Yuma is doing their version of "sexy sports wear", rumours are there will be tank tops emblazoned with your Zodiac sign and piped hot shorts provided for female masqueraders. Guys I am guessing you get the staple T Shirt.
Designer Christian Boucaud will be doing customised Monday Wear for those fashionistas that so desire this option. If you do not know who she is check out her Facebook Page HERE, I cannot wait to see what she comes up with. I do know that she will be designing for specific bands and the Monday Wear will be made to complement your Tuesday costume. More details to be revealed soon.
Fetes
Ronnie and Caro will be hosting their first ever All Inclusive fete, called "Home Sweet Home", on Wednesday March 2nd at the Oval, add this one to your line up for Carnival week.
Got my tickets to the first Fete I will be hitting for the season, SOKA IN MOKA, will you be there? We getting on "Wotless" with Kes!
Theme 2012
Word reaching me is that a very, very popular Carnival Band has already started working on theme 2012... "I Believe"...what do you think of that theme? Feeling it or not? Seems like a VERY abstract theme to me, I guess we are going to see lots of pretty costumes next year!
The Word Presents Genesis I - Creation
Yesterday morning I attended the media launch of the first ever Carnival Band endorsed by the Roman Catholic Church of Trinidad and Tobago; The Word presents Genesis 1 - Creation. The Word and Associates is a Roman Catholic Organisation, headed by Derek Walcott on a mission to bring family "values based fun" and culture back into mas with their Carnival 2011 production Genesis I.
The focus of the band is enjoyment of life without "stereotypical inebriation" that goes with Carnival. What the Word and Associates is attempting to do is erase the "vulgarity" associated with Carnival and replace it with creativity and family. The Word have reiterated that their message is not one off. They intend to continue this every year and grow and spread the message of masqueraders high on life.
And while this may seem like a controversial step by the Roman Catholic Church, as they have already met opposition from some Priests who say that the Carnival Band is not in line with the teachings of the Church, The Word has drawn example from the island of Antigua where for the past 17 years the Roman Catholic Church there has been producing a Carnival Band, even copping the Band of the Year title.
Monsignor Jason Gordon, who gave the welcome address on behalf of His Grace Archbishop Edward Joseph Gilbert, stated that there was a time when Carnival was "blessed" and was of innocent fun. He bemoaned the excess that passes for Culture today and stated that The Word is presenting an alternative to bikini and beads, alcohol and lewd music. To that extent anyone willing to join The Word on their Carnival mission must accept, via guidelines when registering, an alcohol free zone and they must also note that music on the road will be chosen so as not to incite any "wine and jam"! Anyone who flaunts these guidelines will be dealt with my Road Marshalls, albeit in a manner that hopefully causes no embarrassment to the masquerader.
The Word is aiming for 1200 masqueraders in 12 sections with costumes priced between $1000.000 - $2500.00TT. They will also host an alcohol free all inclusive Fete on Sunday February 20th at a cost of $375.00TT, early bird special of $300.00 before January 31st. You can get more information via their website:
Personally as a Roman Catholic and once being told by my Priest that nothing is wrong with participating in Carnival it is all about how you conduct yourself during the celebration, I do not have any misgivings towards this band. I am curious to see how they will enforce their no drinking and no "wine and jam" rule on the streets come Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
What stuck me however was the sense that the origins of Carnival, the birth of what we know today as the Greatest Show on Earth has not always been rooted in Bacchanalia; to me Carnival has always been controversial and always embraced the bacchanal of the flesh. I am trying to remember when in the History of Carnival has it ever been described as "blessed!".
I also have a pet peeve when the topic of alcohol and vulgarity came up especially since I know many people who do play in bikini and beads bands who do not drink or carry on in what may be deemed as a vulgar manner (exactly what that might mean to the Roman Catholic Church is still up for debate). People enjoying Carnival on a "natural high" is certainly not a novel concept. As Father Joe Harris said in response to one of the questions on how The Word masqueraders are expected to dance on the road, from his observation the "vulgarity" is not the majority, just the "excesses" of the celebration.
My other concern would be the quality of the costumes based on the prototypes, while the drawings looked lovely, I could not help but fault the execution. If they are hoping to compete with the likes of Brian Mc Farlane the finished product needs to be a bit more polished and refined. I am not a fan of the materials used, looked a bit cheap to be honest. Other than that the idea put forward for costuming is of course a great one, I always applaud having more choices for masqueraders.
