Re enactment of a Haitian Ra Ra Band & Guyanese Masquerade Band
Carnival 2011 awaits the splendour of the Guyanese traditional masquerade and an interpretation of the Haitian Ra Ra band through the Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA), The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine annual showcase traditional heritage Fair The Old Yard (formerly Viey La Cou) on Sunday 27th February, 2011, from 12:00 noon. Situated in the Gayelle at DCFA, Agostini Street, St. Augustine - an actual yard - complete with an architectural style reminiscent of long ago, this event promises to offer a dynamic mix of a journey into cultural history and a carnival masquerade showcase within the format of a heritage fair.
A special feature of this year’s installment of The Old Yard will be a re-enactment of a Haitian Ra Ra Band and a Guyanese Masquerade Band. The Guyanese masquerade will include traditional characters which are usually showcased at Mashramani in the Guyanese National Festival, which traditionally takes place at Christmas time. The Guyanese masquerade is based on traditional African masquerade with influences that we find popular in this type of masquerade throughout the Caribbean, such as the stilt walker and fertility figure. The music includes the kittle drum, iron, fife and base drum. The masquerade dance movements are common throughout the diaspora from Brazil to New Orleans and have influenced contemporary and popular dances.
The Guyanese masquerade band is led by Adrian Waldron who for several years has been the champion bandleader in Guyana and is also the reigning bandleader with his band Jokers Gone Wild. Mr Waldron is at present conducting workshops in bamboo craft with students at DCFA, where he is a guest tutor.
The re-enactment of a Haitian Ra Ra mas will be performed by students of DCFA. Ra Ra is a peasant-based masquerade that comes out of the vodun temples in Haiti - Vodun being the popular Haitian religion. Those bands are noted for their vibrant rhythms, dancing and political commentary and perform traditionally from Ash Wednesday to Easter.
Also to be featured are our very own traditional Carnival masqueraders – the Bats, the Minstrels and Burrokeets, Midnight Robber, Dame Lorraine and many others. As in the days of old when the masquerade would be made and prepared in the old yard before spilling onto the streets of Port of Spain, The Old Yard gives patrons a slice of this cultural history. In essence, The Old Yard offers a showcase of Carnival masquerade traditions beyond their historical location while stimulating contemporary imaginations. A Mas Camp corner will be included this year, where children will be able to pay a fee to build their costume and participate in the jump up. The young and old can therefore experience the meeting of masquerade traditions in The Old Yard.
Tickets for The Old Yard priced at $50.00 for adults and $20.00 for children can be purchased from Department of Creative and Festival Arts. Contact numbers are 663-2222 (direct line); 662-2002 ext. 3791/2510/2376 or email Marissa.Brooks@sta.uwi.edu.

Panorama Semis Post Mortem
When last I left my saga yesterday I had three friends without a ticket and all the North Stand tickets sold out. On arrival at the Savannah we found nothing had changed, signs were posted all over stating that there were no more North Stand tickets to be sold. Sclapers were actually trying to buy tickets from patrons, so you know at that point how bad it was, and they were reselling at $600.00TT, double the original price. Being the only one of my now crew of 5 with a ticket I decided if they did not get in I would sell mine for the going rate as well.
As luck, ingenuity and some quick thinking would have it everyone got into Panorama and NO we did not secure 4 tickets miraculously and I cannot reveal what the details of the transaction were but suffice to say by 2PM were we all inside the brand new North Stand. The concept this year was to merge the traditional North Stand experience with that of the Greens that patrons have become accustomed to over the last few years. I think this worked beautifully.
All the large "crews" such as Bmobile, Island People, Unit Trust, YUMA, Red Ants and Insomniacs were placed in tented areas in the greens. Some occupied more than one tent, others had sofas to relax on and Bmobile constructed a stage where live performances took place during the day. There were also Moko Jumbies and dancing displays in that space as well. Kes took to the stage in an impromptu concert, and patrons were also serenaded by J.W. & Blaze, Saucy Wow and Iwer.
Product girls were offering you all manner of free drinks and snacks and the Nescafe tent gave patrons body paint if they wanted. And there were bars set up as well as various places to buy something to eat. It was like a big open air picnic/festival/concert with rhythm sections and lots and lots of people! I saw people I had not seen in years, always something I enjoy when going to Panorama.
The North Stands by contrast had patrons actually sitting down listening to the bands on stage, there were some "crews" there as well, like Digicel and We Ting but I saw more individual, independent groups walking with their coolers of drinks and foiled covered containers of food. Because of the new layout I did not find the North Stand to be as cramped as it was in years past, there was enough space to walk the aisles and the Rhythm Sections were noticeably absent. Since I spent some of my time in the stands my pet peeve albeit was the disrespect given to the bands performing on stage by some of the Rhythm Sections on the Greens who did not stop to allow the patrons in the North Stand to hear what was being played! I found this to be discourteous especially when one Rhythm Section was so loud the whole North Stand reverberated from the percussion!
The Grand Stand with it's padded chairs was under occupied, you know the North Stand is the place to be when the President shows up in convoy to be escorted to his reserved VIP area of the North Stand! Overall I enjoyed the return to the North Stand coupled with the Greens and the stage looked AWESOME! I hope for 2012 that he NCC and Pan Trinbgao limit the amount of tickets that are sold to Crews and Sponsored Sections so that everyone can get the same opportunity to enjoy Panorama to the fullest!

WEE INTERNATIONAL PINK CARNIVAL MONDAY 2011
On Carnival Monday 2011, Wee International will make history. For the first time, Wee International will dedicate its Carnival Monday presentation to Breast Cancer Awareness in an all pink presentation.
Pink Carnival is the brainchild of Giselle “The Wassi One” Blanche, the newest member of the Wee international family. Giselle has embarked on an all out Breast Cancer Awareness campaign as a result of her participation in the 2010 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk in her home city of Miami, Florida. She was invited by attorney Marlon Hill and his wife Carla, a 3 year breast cancer survivor. They invited Caribbean Americans to come out and show support with their carnival headpieces on their team amicably known as D’ Limers. Giselle was so moved by the experience that she decided to embark on her very own campaign known as Pink Carnival.
In broadening the scope and reach, she decided to use her new home in Wee International as another vehicle to spread the important message. Giselle states, “the goal is to raise awareness and encourage women to get checked by any means necessary. Carnival is such a powerful marketing and advertising machine. It’s the perfect time to spread the message.”
Bandleader of Wee International, Rickie Davidson stated, “Wee International is more than just your average band. We are a band with a purpose and realize the opportunity that we have to make a difference. We will demonstrate that on Pink Carnival Monday 2011.”Mas Camp: #30 Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, Trinidad

Panorama Semi Finals Today and North Stand Tickets Are SOLD OUT!
The most anticipated Panorama Lime takes place today at the Queens Park Savannah. I am sure right now pots of pelau are bubbling on the stove, ice is chilling for the coolers, salt prunes are soaking in tequila, all varieties of homemade mixed drinks are being bottled and the real Panorama aficionados are lining up their posse to head down to the Savannah early to secure their spot. This year Panorama patrons return to the North and Grand Stands while the bands will perform on the brand new Savannah Stage.
The only thing that could dampen the mood today is if you are one of the thousands of Panorama Patrons left without a ticket to the North Stand! In the history of my attending Panorama at the Savannah, and I have been going to Panorama Semifinals when it was called Pan Prelims and the entrance fee was $20.00TT, I have NEVER heard of tickets being sold out a day in advance. Imagine to my surprise when I heard yesterday at around midday that tickets to the North Stand were indeed sold out!
Rumours started flying as people went into panic mode. One version said that the Fire Services made Pan Trinbago print 3000 LESS tickets owing to safety concerns, others said that North Stand tickets were being held back because tickets to the Grand Stand were not selling and yet another allegation was that Pan Trinbgao sold tickets to all the "party crews" that populate the North Stand FIRST so the people who really want to hear Pan and not be part of the lime are out of a ticket because of the "bandwagonists". Whatever the reasons at this moment 3 members of my own posse are now without a ticket for the North Stand as they were planning on buying their ticket at the Savannah as they have always done every single year.
I am the lucky one who managed to secure a ticket to the North Stand in advance but the reality is that my friends now have to face the scalpers, who I am sure have a plethora of tickets to sell at an inflated price, or hope that by some miracle Pan Trinbago finds some tickets to sell at the Savannah today. To say that this has left a really sour taste in our mouths is an understatement. I have been a Panorama patron for over 14 years, missing out on Panorama only once during this period. I have watched the changes that have come over Panorama from the days we went in free, walking with our own cooler packed with drinks and a buffet of food in Styrofoam containers, to today where tickets to the North Stand cost more than the Grand Stand at a whopping $300.00TT, add a Pan Lime costing an additional $150.00 - $200.00TT and you have turned Panorama in the North Stand into an all inclusive affair complete with tents and banners for the"Crews" !
While I am not one to frown upon change, I mean it is the one constant thing in all our lives, I am just saddened by the fact that I hear people saying they are going to Panorama today and they hope they don't hear too much noise or hear too much pan! People who just want to wear their homogeneous "crew" t shirts and tank tops, who could not tell you which band is on stage or what song is being played because they are imbibing copious amounts of liquor while waiting for the rhythm section to start up. And those people are the ones with a ticket!
On that note my friends and I will be heading down to the Savannah in a few hours time with some optimism or else check me by the gate, I will be scalping my ticket for the current rumoured going rate of $1000.00TT to some fool who is going in with ear plugs !

Boots By Designing Daryl Review
Hi Saucy,
Please allow me to share a review on your blog.
I would like to highlight and thank Designing Daryl for the boot decorating service which he provided for my Amazonia costume. I explained via email what type of look I was going for, but of course I also left the end result up to his creativity since he is the expert. Daryl replied immediately, and I was completely blown away by his response. His interpretation of the look I wanted to achieve was as if he knew me for years! In fact I had a huge smile on my face when I read his reply email.
Throughout the process, he was very informative, even during the Christmas holidays when I did not expect to hear from him, I got frequent updates. Upon completion, the boots were immediately shipped to me and arrived exactly when he said it would. Needless to say, seeing them in person, I was in love!
Despite his obvious talent, what I appreciated most of all was his professionalism, understanding of my vision, and the ease in which the process was completed. Thank you again Daryl for the positive experience and the gorgeous end result.
