When I am discussing costumes and costume prices with my co-workers (who are not mas players) they are sometimes overwhelmed with my enthusiasm and astounded that I am willing to pay so much for a bra and panty covered with beads and feathers.
I don't know how to explain it to people who have never played mas, but there is no price you can put on that feeling of euphoria for those two days. Now I am not saying that the price of costumes have not been steadily rising while the product is simultaneously getting smaller. The ideology now with all-inclusive bands is that you are paying for more than a costume since we all know the costume costs nothing close to $3000.00.
My husband broke it down and justified the pricing for both me and my friend G by comparing Carnival Monday and Tuesday to an all-inclusive party spanning the course of two days. His philosophy is that the better all-inclusive parties cost around $500.00 from 6:00P.M. to 12:00 midnight. That's six hours of music, security, food and drinks.
Then by using the same principle you get food, drinks, music and security for 6 hours on average on Carnival Monday and 12 hours on Tuesday, using $500.00 as our standard that's $1500.00 for the all-inclusive component of Mas. Then add in all the "perks" such as transportation for latecomers, mobile resting stations, cool-zones and mobile toilets and chalk that up to another $500.00 per masquerader, even if you not using all the facilities it is still provided for you.
Finally you have your costume,(and frankly if you are going to a $500.00 all-inclusive you would have to get something new to wear) so the price of the costume will vary from bewteen $500.00 to $1000.00 because apart from raw materials you need labour to assemble it, box it and distribute it.
The final analysis is that you can justify the prices of $2600.00 to $3000.00 for a costume since it takes into consideration MORE than just the costume. It takes alot of money for the bandlaunching, renting Cascadia for hosting the costume viewing, printing all the TRIBE booklets with the costume information, setting up the lunch area on Monday and Tuesday, goody bags, plus paying their employees (in whatever form) and I am sure there are other cost overheads that I have not take in to consideration such as website hosting, telephone, lights, internet etc. Coming to think of it, I did this as a project for my Project Management class but on a smaller scale, my project was producing a section in a Carnival band and there are lots of hidden costs that I did not even have a clue about until I started talking to friends who have sections of their own.
Since I am not stupid and know the bandleaders will still make a profit come Ash Wednesday, I can see them making this proft through sponsorship to offset some of these costs. And, I know TRIBE has alot of sponsors that's why they give such a sweet goody bag!
So in the end I can say I am comfortable with the prices now, even though I have my ceiling on how much money I am willing to spend for two days of euphoria. Taking into consideration what I am getting for my money with TRIBE I can safely say it is worth it, since they do deliver on all their promises unlike other all-inclusive sections that I personally know of.
With the cost of living in Trinidad rising steadily and basic food items costing an arm and a leg it's not only mas that's being affected, everything is getting more expensive. If prices for costumes becomes ridiculously unattainable (though some may argue they are already unattainble to the working poor and are aimed at only the socioeconomic groups that can afford to drop $3000.000 on a costume) I think mas bands might just have to re-consider all-inclusive and offer costume only which works for HARTS (you have to pay extra for toilets and/or a drinks cart with lunch).
And if that is not an option for the future and prices continue to rise, then as much as I love Carnival I will have to consider playing mas every two years instead of every year. Though I can afford a $3000.00 costume now, I cannot afford it if every year the costs goes up since life does go on after Carnival. So for 2007 I plan to enjoy Carnival to the fullest, who knows, I might not be able to afford 2008 and will have save up my pennies for 2009 because Lord knows I am not putting myself in debt for Carnival.....but that is a whole other topic!

HI Saucy Trini
I was introduced to your blog a a coule of weeks ago and I must say I find it informative. I live in Barbados but love mas in Trinidad...the vibe is incredible!
Now for years I have been trying to get persons in Barbados to understand why the prices in T&T are higher for mas...the main reason is that you have two days and we have one. If Kadooment went on for two days there would be a dramtic increase in the cost of costumes here as well.
I have played mas wih Tribe over the last two Carnivals..05 & 06 and had a blast. I think this year I paid about US$285 for my costume (male), a slight increase from 2005 where I think I paid between US$250 - $265.
Now I know that the cost of living is going up everywhere....things bad here in Barbados too, but I can't agree with your justification of the prices. I mean have things gotten so bad in T&T that your prices must go up from US$285 to US$433? (based on the TT2600)That is an increase of almost US$150.00!!
I mean the goody bag I got this year was great...for that price what will I be getting....a cellphone...an Ipod Shuffle?
Marc the prices I quoted are for the female costumes which have always been more expensive than the male's. If the costumes will be between $2600.00 - $3000.00 that is an increase of around $200.00 - $300.00 over this years prices. The most expensive costume this year was Angelfish at $2700.00 or thereabouts, not counting the frontline sections.
I don't know what the prices are for male costumes but I do not expect a $150.00US rise in prices for regular male costumes! To be honest with you I think the bigger price jump was between 2005 and 2006. In 2005 we signed up with Amazonia and that costume was $1795.00, in 2006 my costume Tales of Benguela cost $2395.00.The balance on my costume after I made my downpayment was the cost of my costume in 2005.Hopefully the section I like this year won't be that much of a difference in price.
I agree that costume prices have risen and continue to rise. Also everyone wants to get in to either TRIBE or Island People and with demand so high and supply so limited price will be the determining factor in who gets to play.Like I said I have a price limit on what I am willing to pay for my costume and when I reach that limit I won't be able to afford to play mas every year or I will look for a band that is not all-inclusive and more affordable.
My justification was based on the entire all-inclusive experience and the services we pay for wheter we partake of them or not, Harts has a section for $3050.00 how do you justify that for costume ALONE?
Believe me, prices in Trinidad are high the Central Bank Governor spoke recently on methods to curb inflation rates as every single product and service has risen in cost signifcantly over the past few months.I am waiting to see what the prices are for Carnival fetes. I already know that I won't be going to many because WE honestly cannot afford to go to many all-inclusive fetes and pay for two costumes (I have to multiply everything by 2 for the hubby and me). I know for many people it is either play mas or go to parties or take loans to be able to do both!
p.s. with Digicel as a sponsor who knows we might get a cell phone in our goody bag :D
Hiya
Well I guess we will have to wait and see what these prices are gonna look like. I have been hearing this TT$2600.00 figure floating around from both males and females.
By next week I guess I will know if I am coming for just the parties or will be playin mas as well.
Regards
Marc
You know I was thinking about what you said about the prices and you have a really good point, they are very expensive. The last time I played with Harts was in 2001 and the cost of my costume then was $1000.00, I went to Harts mas camp yesterday and the cheapest costume you can get for a female is aproximately $1600.00(though the most expensive is $3050.00) so that's an increase of $100.00 per year since I stopped playing mas with Harts. Tribe went up by $600.00 in ONE year and even though Harts is not all inclusive I am sure that lunch and drinks isn't going to cost me $1000.00 more for the two days (comparing the $1600.00 costume to the $2600.00 costume in Tribe)!I guess that's why Harts is selling out, for the band that is perceived as "white" and "bourgouise" they have the most affordable costumes at this time.I guess the people with money don't spend alot of money on mas!You think they know something we don't?
Saucy, I tell you hit the bullseye on this one because I have played with Harts for years in low cost but rather well made costumes. Not a bead, shell, or plume EVER came off. I am the kind of masquerader that does NOT leave the road on Carnival Tuesday....I'm still in the dark, dark street getting on for las lap. I bawl tears of blood when de party over. I does rhellll need Prozac pon Ash Wednesday. Nevertheless, my Harts costumes remain intact over the years! The last I jumped with them was 2003. 2k4 was with Poison, 2k5 I was absent, and 2k6 was with TRIBE. Currently there's no guarantee that I'll be there in 2k7.
For years folks would show their disdain when I told them who I jump with and the words bougie, hoity toity, and white were spoken with much frequency. I didn't care for I loved my band and always will! I even felt badly for them this year when I witnessed how much more (dare I say) scaled down they looked on the road.
The newer bands have the pricier costumes but yet so much more to offer, and we Trinis does always try tuh get more bang fuh we buck! I love TRIBE's goodie bags..they're great!
But wait! Is what the topic was again?...Ah fuhget what ah was supposed tuh be discussing wid allyuh....Steups!
prettidolli I have all my Harts costumes too and they are in perfect condition, they really do make those costumes very well. I have gotten the same reaction from co-workers and other friends when I played with Harts, but those were some of my best years playing mas!
I decided to switch to Poison because my friends were saying Harts was getting boring and at Poison "they had more fun". Some of the Harts crew went with Pleasures Carnival and some of us played in another section. That first year I played with Poison it was like a culture shock. I could not believe that playing mas meant standing for hours on Charlotte Street, people like to say that Harts circles the Oval umpteen times but I prefer to circle the Oval than spend practically all of Tuesday on ONE street. Also, I could not get used to not stopping for lunch, seeing people sitting on the side of the street in their expensive costumes eating out of a box was just crazy. And to add insult to injury our costumes fell apart before we reached the stage!
I was so ready to go back to Harts when I decided to give Poison another try as my friends who played with Pleasures had a much better time than we did,I realised then that choosing what section to play with was very important in Poison and my friends and I played with Sonia Mack the next year. That was a better experience as we were to the front of the band and honestly we did have more fun as it was my first experience with an all-inclusive section!
When Tribe formed their own band we signed up with them as some of my former Harts friends played with Pleasures in Poison and encouraged us to switch yet again.Tribe's formula with the lunch stop and mobile restrooms was what I was used to in Harts and they had much more to offer as well with the total all-inclusive experience.Girl, I love the goody bags as well, all I ever got from Harts was a key chain and a cup! lol.
