Just back from Island People's Mas Camp...

My friend who was in New York on vacation is back home and since she did not organise her business when I told her to she missed out on Sacred Sand. So we were off to the mas camp this afternoon so she could inspect what's left and hopefully make a decision.

Firstly no more sections are sold out, Sacred Sand, Goddess & Defenders, Oasis, Jewel of the Nile and Arabian Dancer A &B are still the only ones gone. Now the first visit I had to the mas camp was pure madness and I did not get to inspect the costumes as I wanted to. So, this afternoon I took my time as there was no crowd (there were still a lot of people viewing and registering) and examined the costumes giving my friend my honest opinions on her possible selections.

Sacred Sand is my number one choice, it's a very detailed costume and the handiwork shows. The bra is worked with pearls and beads, you can see it took time to create. The belt is not just a strip of sequins and applique but looks as if sand dollars, pearls and beads are hand stitched to what looks like a silk fabric. Oddly enough the smaller headpiece looked much better to me with the costume as I find it compliments it more than the large headpiece with the pheasant feathers.

My second choice would be the Arabian dancer with the tall headpiece, I so LOVE that bodice/top with the beads coming to the front. The bathing suit is made similar in design to what is used for the Cow Mas section in TRIBE, except this one meets to the middle and hooks to bottom piece with an O ring. Then they worked the bra with rows of gold beads which gives the effect of beaded gold fringe, I love everything about that costume.

As you can see the favourites are what is sold out, my friend was very disappointed that Sacred Sand was gone and of what remained she had a criticism of each one:

Mirage's colours were too pastel, she did not like the headpiece for Sahara Sunset, Taureg looked "cheap" (her words not mine), Raiders looked like a Catwalk outfit, she was not feeling Le Soleil (though I love that costume), she did not like the green of Cacti, Arabian Princess looked under decorated and she hated Sirrocco Winds (especially the "gaudy" backpack).

The costumes that are possibilities are Nubians (and for those who wanted to know the entire bra is beaded with fine, red beads), Harem Girls and Sahara Jumbie which is a VERY pretty costume! The only caveat is that Jumbie might be too dark for one of the other girls who my friend is playing with and Harem Girls are colours they played in this year.

Two costumes that did not wow me in person were Oasis and Jewels of the Nile. We both found Jewel of the Nile to be too busy, almost coskel with all those different colours and although I still like Oasis the costume is too blue! Hard to explain but the colour overpowers the design, and I don't like the odd shade of light blue used on the shoulder pieces of the front line, it does not match the rest of the costume. The biggest let down for my friend was Goddess and Defenders, she hated that costume in person and that was also one of her original choices. I have to admit the star bra looks very tacky and the feathers are not as white as I remembered, maybe it was the lighting but they looked off white. And the "beads" they used on the belt and regular bra looked flimsy and dare I say cheap!

After spending a lot of time going over the costumes my friend left still undecided and disappointed in the choices she had left. Tomorrow she will be back to make a down payment with the rest of the girls who are playing with her and hopefully they can come to a decision on a costume.

Oh, I noticed a nice trial area for bras which is a great addition to the mas camp as you can be properly sized and one of the young ladies said online registration will begin TODAY. I found that to be odd because I checked the website when I got home and you still cannot register online! Maybe she means later this evening I don't want to speculate and have all the people waiting for online registration falling asleep at the computers tonight!

Hey Saucy,
You think your friend will abandon IP and go for Tribe? As much comess going on with IP I am beginning to become at peace with my decision to play with Cacti..that and the fact that Dame Lorraine is sold out. This is my first time playing mas...it must have some highlights no matter what.
K
Thanks again Saucy for all this info.

I don't think she will, firstly she liked Sailor and Fireman in TRIBE and they both gone. And secondly she is of the opinion that TRIBE is to stush and it is the "red people" band ! LOL

If she does not decide on a costume in IP she will not play mas or take the chance that she might be able to buy a costume in January/Feburary from someone who is sellling or the mas camp on Carnival Sunday!

hmmmm...Nubian isn't sold out? That was my first choice and wen the person who i sent to register for me went (I live in the US) they told her it was sold out. Are you sure? What time was that Saucy?

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

I was there just after 5 and there was no Sold Out sign on Nubians neither did the assitant who was following us around say anything about it being sold out and she told us as soon as we cam ein what was available and what was not.

hmmm..but like my friend settin me up...she told me I got into my 2nd choice which was Sirocco Winds (her first choice). Nubians was my first choice cuz my gurls from home playin in it. I guess she wanted me to play wit her. I wonder if I can change it....u tink they'll let me?

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

hmm, well how can you get it changed seeing as technically overseas masqueraders have to pay full payment? :S

Anonymous this may sound like a stupid, silly question but the person who went was she skinny or big bone well fat?
Reason I am asking cause for their 06 costumes when my cousin went to register, the section she pick was sold out. LIARS! The section was not sold out. My coustin is big-bone well fat and apparently they figure she would not look good in they butterfly costume. And yuh know how we know they lie cause she husband was right outside when this happen she went out and told him he then went in a little while after an ask if the section was still open so he could register his wife and they said yes (he is red skin, good looking and have a nice body)he then said ok went outside bring my cousin his wife in and ask them why they just tell her the costume sold out. The person started to stutter, apologise and make some stupid excuse and said they can register. My cousin husband told them off and left. So this could be one reason, with IP anything is possible.
The sad part for my cousin she is a butterfly freak everything she loves with butterfly so when IP had the enchanted forest for carnival she was so excited that she will get to portray a butterfly and boy did they burst a bubble.

Saucy!! Girl I was at IP Mas camp and just KNEW that was you!! Did you not see me studying you gyul??

I think I stayed and examined the costumes as long as you did.
Oasis: an icky shade of blue, Jewel of the Nile: obzoky, Cacti: me no likee. Goddess was nice but a bit disappointing. Sacred Sands, Sahara Jumbie and Le Soleil Brule were all beautiful. Still gotta say kudos to the design team.

Still considering becoming a 2 band H.O.

Saucy girl, yuh making me a carnival jumbie yes. I loving it!

Anonymous said...

WHy u all think that both bands ent sell out yet? rationales anyone?

Bagogyul said...

Justice....i understand...IP is know for doing this...not only with mas but their VIP parties.

oh my god, saucy i think your friend and i think the same way. I was totally in love with Goddess and Defenders and Taureg but it was a different story when i went to the mas camp. I ended up signing up in Sirocco winds cuz the majority of my friends are either there, Jewel or Jumbie.Jewel is too much and as much as i like jumbie, i get burnt very quick, so playin in black isn't a good idea. But i really can't see myself jumping up in dat costume.....too much cloth. So if you know anyone looking for a backline costume in Sirocco Winds let me know.....34b,33 belt size and small bottom.

Saucy u does have me checking u blog every 5 minutes LoL, I think I addicted. But listen what the hell is IP story, I am from the Caribbean and me and my girls played with IP this yr but they treating us like pure shit. Now today they sent an email saying registration is open but they r not sure what time it will start, dem full of crap...man they goin end up with no band at the rate they goin.

I tierd with them but i really want to play mass but i cant deal with this treatment not to mention all the money they except me to pay in full..wha dem think i laying golden eyes.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

bajangal are you in Barbados, Baje International has a section with IP I think it is Mirage.Wouldn't is be easier to register through them, that is if you like the costume!

I did not realise Caribbean residents have to pay full price too :S and I keep checking for online registration as well and still nothing!

Girl is either you have paitence, complain or go with a next band!

and anon, so if you sell your costume what section you playing with? Jumbie is sort of irridescent though, you really think it will be too hot, well apart from the BLACK feathers on yuh head, I am thinking it might not be soo hot afterall seeing as is not all black. The colour reminds me of Leasel Rovedas' section in Tribe for 2005.

yeah saucy i know baje has a section we jump with them for crop over but we had alot of issues on the road this year...it sucked. Plus me and my girls got a nasty feelin that we aint goin like the costumes. At this point i am going to be suck with it though so i waiting to see how it looks.

We sent one of the girls to trinidad last weekend to sign us up cause apparently we were told that once we r not from trinidad if we sign up in trinidad we can pay the deposit and dont have to pay in full...this only confused me again as to why they could not offer everyone online the down payment option. But the girl also said how cheap and tacky the costumes had looked in person especially the sections we loved online such as Jewel and the Goddess setions so we back to square one.

Anonymous said...

well after i get rid of my sirocco winds costume, i'll be left wit 2 decisions....my cousin and her friends from the states would like to come down for carnival and they in love wit taureg and nubians, so i might play in 1 of those 2 sections. My other choice is to go away for Carnival with my family. So if my cousin and her friends can't come down, i may do the vacation thing. Right now my friends are really upset with me....lol!! But i playin mas every year since i was in Form 4,i'm 25 now.....so what's wrong if i miss 1 year. and i think if u spendin 2895 or more on a costume, it should be for a costume that u really like.........so those r my choices right now, i'll keep u updated on what i finally decide to do.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

bajangal I did not want to say anything about IP' costumes since I get accused of being biased and badtalking them, but I am glad you said what you said so people will know what to expect when they open on their box on pick up day. :S

Anyways you can see photos of Mirage in my photobucket albumn, personally I find it is a cute costume, but my friend, husband and some other girls there found the colours are too pale for Carnival :S

Anonymous said...

Saucy, does IP offer DD bra options? Looking at their costumes it looks like the choices for ladies with more than a handfull are limited.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

hmm I guess they do, someone else who regsistered will have to answer that.

That's pro photography for ya, their site made their costumes look sensational, all of them, it's interesting hearing how they look in person. I love your launch shot saucy of sirocco winds, it's like flowing fire, & your goddess pics are hott. I did wonder why they chose such a pale model for Mirage, I thought it would shine more on a dark model... I wonder why certain sections sell out 1st, like SSand, which is a stunning sexy costume, but I wouldn't have thought it would be their top one. & is there a pic of (Tribe's) Warrior anywhere? Curious...

saucy is there any chance that you could post some closeup photos of ip mirage, jumbie, sand and nubian im real stuck on which to pick.i real hate having to book online coz im unable to see the detail of the costume.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

bajan to tell u which is the best is difficult seeing as I don't know what you looking for! I need more info on your tastes etc.

don't let others decide your costume for you, or make you feel bad if they've bashed one you like, pick it for yourself based on what grabs you, what you instantly love! Only you know what colours look amazing on you, what style you'd feel fantastic in, & what you'd be proud to wear!
