National Carnival and Arts Centre

I was able to get my hands on some of the drawings for the planned Carnival and Arts Centre.
(for much larger views click on the photos)

This is showing the existing facilities at the Savannah and the outline of where the new Carnival Centre will be located in relation to that:

Five levels, including a basement, make up the centre with the third level being the Public Concourse which replaces the Savannah stage. When the centre is completed this is where masqueraders will be parading.Note the seating terraces, food and beverage areas in red and V.I.P. area in blue:

The other levels include a V.I.P. Level above the Public Concourse and a Media Level to the top. Below the Public Concourse is the Undercroft level which houses a Carnival Mueseum as well as offices for NCC, TUCO,NCBA and Pan Trinbago.

And finally, here are some more drawings of the National Carnival & Arts Centre:

View from inside, imagine this is what we masqueraders will be seeing as we cross the stage:

Birdseye view of the roof:

Somehow I think the aesthetic looks incongruous in the Savannah To me the design is ambitious, wonderful to house a museum, concert stage for Diamanche Gras and artistes to perform but I just cannot see myself crossing that stage in an atmosphere that looks so sterile. Hopefully I will be playing mas the year this Centre debuts and will be able to judge for myself then. Here is hoping construction will be on schedule and that the final product does the designs some justice.

Morning People!

Seeing these new pics and new views of the building, I have to say it looks even nicer. But, as I said before I'm not sure about the practicality (is that a word?) for 'mas. I think if the roof opened up a little more (and hopefully it does) to let more of the outside in, it may not be so bad. But then, they may not want to get their nice building dusty. We shall see. I too hope to be playing mas the year it opens to judge for myself.

Lord, look how Carnival turning in to a production....

I don't know about this stadium for the main judging point. I'm all for a cultural center but have the building separate from the stage and just revamp the stage and the seating that's all. The sun and the outdoor air NEEDS to shine on us. The sunlight is the best way to view the costumes. I don't know about crossing the stage in this extra stush stadium.

Morning bloggers,
it's looks good on paper but will have to see how it all turns out.

Hello hotboy. I like your name, wink, wink! Hear what, I am all for trying something new. I think a cultural centre is LONG overdue. But for the love of God, don't break down the old structure until the new one is in place. And I hope they have an advising committee made up of members of the Carnival community advising them. So many people are against this but the Government not listening. Anyway, so many people against the smelter and they done break ground. Allyuh eh realise the government doing we a favour by allowing us to live in their country!? Hush allyuh mouth and say thank God Pastor Patrick eh ban mas!

Saucy its funny that you would say the building is incongrous with the Savannah. Mr.Mendes has stated that the reason there is all the that greenery on the outside and up the outer sides of teh building itself is to try and blend away the building into the natural landscape. The roof is meant to be very airy and open to allow free flow of air and give the structure lightness so that it almost floats over the savannah. Whether or not this has been accomplished is arguable but we shall see.
As I pointe out in my blog, the stands don't accomodate for the traditional riddem sections and north stand bars as we know it. Everybody will have to sit in their seats and take in the pan whether yuh in the north or the grand stand.

With a building like that I cannot see it blending into the Savannah at all! It's all good and well for them to make all these grand statements about the roof etc. but it remains to be seen of that will come to fruition.

A building like that is an antithesis to the Savannah, if you even look at the definition - a large/wide, flat plain. By planting that building there, they are changing the landscape of a Trinidad landmark. They are also taking away the feel of mas as something connected to history and legacy of our forefathers. The mas will become a choreographed production. People complain about the "bikini mas" as detracting from our histoy of mas being social commentary and depicting a slave point of view but truly I fear the rise of technology and "architecture" will accomplish the same far more rapidly. If I wanted to be in a stadium, I would go to the Superbowl every year.
