Hitting the Gym!!!!

Ok, better late than never right? I have procrastinated enough and today I am starting the gym since the weather lately has been un-coperative for my walks and ruining my "fitness regime"! Hopefully when it stops raining I will also tackle Lady Chancelor Hill, mix up gym days with walking up that hill.

I realise that time really is flying! Soon it will be January and then it's all over, too late to think about "getting fit" for Carnival. So my plan is to continue eating healthy (I have been learning all sorts of new ways to cook pak choi, cabbage and melongene) and couple that with my walking and now the gym.

Funny enough the Trinidad Guardian has a nice description of the "gym characters" in today's fitness section, thankfully I fall into none of the following categories:

Gym characters

Most people who frequent gyms take their training seriously. They are committed to their respective fitness programmes and are focused on reaching their various exercise goals.

A well-equipped commercial gym can undoubtedly change your body and increase your fitness level once you apply yourself properly. However, as in other workplaces, you can find quite an assortment of funny and irritating characters in the gym arena.

Today I thought it would be a good idea to have a lighthearted look at some of these characters.

Read my list carefully and you might recognise one of the following characters in your gym.

THE SCREAMER

This is the guy who screams with any weight he is pressing or squatting, whether it is 50lbs or 500lbs. While it is quite understandable that when you are handling heavy weights a grunt or shout may naturally escape your lips, there are some men who grunt and scream even if they are only pushing ten lbs. They then proceed to drop the weights on the gym floor with reckless abandon, hoping that the noise would then draw your attention to how hard they are working out.

THE GYM BUNNY OR POSER

This woman comes to the gym with matching gym outfits and handbags, moves from machine to machine without breaking a sweat and then after 30 minutes on the gym floor goes to the changing room and re-appears in a new outfit for her aerobics class.

THE MIRROR INSPECTOR

This is a male or female who feels it is his or her duty to ensure that every mirror in the gym is in good working condition. Sometimes when they are on the Stairmaster, they have the potential to put themselves in a deep state of hypnosis with the great degree of admiration they have for their reflection in the mirror. In other words, they become legends in their own minds.

THE BIRDY BUILDER

This is the guy who is never seen in short pants. He always trains in a track suit pants and only does upper body work. The end result: He comes out with a big upper body and skinny legs, very much in keeping with the look of Big Bird or cartoon character Johnny Bravo.

He also flexes his biceps, while taking utmost care to hide his calves, when engaging you in conversation.

THE CELLULITE QUEEN

While it is quite understandable that a woman may develop a fair amount of cellulite on her legs, this person should also take the necessary steps to wear the appropriate clothing to the gym and spare other members the pain of having to view legs that should not be

in mini-shorts, but in more selective gym apparel.

Anjée takes her training seriously and isn’t on the gym characters list.

THE COLOGNE KING

This guy needs to understand that perfume and sweat do not mix well; he should avoid trying to use out the entire contents of the bottle in one gym visit. A nice bath, accompanied with a good quality deodorant and clean gym wear, is usually all the preparation necessary for you to make your grand entrance into the gym

arena.

THE WANNABE TRAINER

This guy is neither an instructor or trainer, but he knows everything about training and feels compelled to show you the “correct” way to do every exercise, even if your form is flawless. As a result, you have absolutely no time to enjoy your own company.

THE AEROBICS QUEEN

Even if she arrives late for her class, she manages to wiggle herself into the frontline and then feels it is her duty to indicate to the instructor how much time he must allot for actual aerobics training and how much for floor work.

THE COMPLAINER

This person finds everything in the gym to complain about, ranging from the gym fees to the fact that she is tired of seeing the instructors in green polo jerseys. If the gym was too clean, she would probably complain about that as well.

It takes all types to make up this crazy world we live in and whether you are at work or in the gym, you are sure to spot a character that will bring either a smile or frown to your face. Keep training.

Morning All:

Saucy thus far I've avoided the gym and part of the reason being the bunnies and posers. I one would get beat up or cussed out, because I have one those tell all faces; you will know exactly what I'm thinking by my facial expression. So for peace sake, I stay home and work out.

Today starts my 4th week of working out at home. I do Turbo Jam and I have to say, I'm hooked. I've tried Boot Camp and could not stick with it, but Turbo seems to have captured my interest. I'm following the 2 month schedule provided (1 month beginner, 1 month advanced) and then like you, my hope is to get up Lady Chancellor and the Savannah, mixed in with my Turbo of course.

My only keep back is my diet. I'm very fussy about what goes in my mouth, so recipes for Bok Choy and Cabbage will not work with me. But, my Mom is helping me develop a diet which should really crank up my results.

And its working...so I really encourage everyone to find a workout you like and keep at it and eat healthy.

anon the South Beach diet is good, it teaches you to identify the "good carbs and bad crabs" unlike the Atkins you can still have carbs in moderation after the first phase.

sexy eyes and warriow working out for free is ideal, but my "free" work out was walking and with the weather these days I decided to hit the gym so I will not have any excuses not to work out!

kevian I think you are doing a good job with your workout chick, keep it up!

Kevian glad to see you went and check out the South Beach Diet as I suggested. It is one of the few diets that have some logic sense and is actually doable.
Saucy I feel you is a gymbolassie lolol.

I used to go to the YMCA some years ago and ran into a few of those characters. I was annyoed, especially by the wanna be trainer who only trains his arms but the legs birdy and the gut is still there. LOL and I couldn't turn my cd player loud enough to tune out the grunters lol. Now I go to the gym in my school and luckly don't encounter any of them there.

I'm on Day 2 of a Lose-10 pounds-in-3 days diet (aka Clevelend CLinic diet among other things) and I'm staring at a bowl of cottage cheese and 5 crackers (my lunch). Is a good thing this diet is only 3 days oui because I LOVE my belly and there was no way I was putting any kinda restrictions on what or how much I eat for longer than that! So far it seems to be working because I lost 3.5 lbs in 24 hours. Ok so it might just be water but who cares if is blood! I'm lighter and I'm happy. Now this diet is really just supposed to be a kick start to healthier eating and an exercise routine but I have yet to start the exercise part. I can't do the gym thing because I have two small children and I would just be wasting my money because I'd never find the time to go. I'm supposed to be purchasing a stationary bike soon so that I can take a 20-mins here and there. Wish me luck!

OMG Hottie lol! I didn't know where to look the first time that happen in the gym changing rooms.
Gym Mirrors are evil. You could really get an inferior complex at the gym. I just stick with my big t-shirt and hang at the back and don't go at peak hrs.
Don't go anymore though way too much motivation required.

You have carbs in moderation on Atkins - i.e. lettuces, all green veggies, & after the 1st phase, Induction, beans, nuts & berries... then it continues on throughout the phases adding more healthy low carbs, such as oatmeal & lower carb fruits like melons. Atkins does teach you about good & bad carbs.

I'm none of those gym characters, I just go to seriously do my thing, & hard.

Ah go hear 'bout you rah.

And allyuh laughing! I going in private booth to change (because I real old school, I prefer to CHOOSE who I showing my nannie to) and seeing all kinda poonkie with minge and thing and four, five belly strolling. They taking they time and creaming all part ah dey kyow and you dey trying to hustle out a dey FUSS de ting looking terrible. And it have who does be well talking and waving arm and examining theyself naked in front a people. It not right nah. Not right aye tall.

Karabana said...

I'm with you HH, I've never understood this walking around naked in the gym change room thing, I mean, those with no cellulite or major fat, which is like very very very few, ok, they wanna show off, but the rest? Where's the modesty? It's not about being a prude, bc OMG believe me, I'm not...

Hottie..........LMAO!!!
Europeans don't give a damn! It's all good for them, I get an eyefull on the beach in Tobago in Tourist season.....yikes!! So I feelin sorry for yuh.

'Rah, try TurboJam, it's really working for me, and there is a 20 minutes routine that has my WET by minute 4 (so it either real good, or I in real bad shape). The music is fun and you'll find yourself kicking and punching for no reason at all random random....lol.

It's a much smaller investment than a stationary bike. Think about it!

I does work out for three reasons...

1 To get some form of exercise for my lazy ass

2 Crop Over

3 Carnival

Lucky for me the last two fall about six months apart so I got a reason to be in de gym all year.

waspwidfirecracker, I'm hooked!!
Today is Cardio Party for me and I try to do the standing abs even on the days its not required (those abs, those abs, those abs!)

That meal program I cannot do, 80% of those things I don't eat, so there's no way.

But I wish you every success and all the best as you begin again!!!

Good Morning Saucy & bloggers =),

It's true, better late than never! Going for my first bout at the gym in a little bit, and even though it's still dark outside (damn you daylight savings time!) I am happy to be making the conscious effort for effective change..Hopefully this will be a perennial habit for me, and not "jus fuh mas", lol...but I won't lie, Fancy Indian Frontline is my motivation :)

Anyone with the weblink on the South Beach Diet..please let me know..because double duty (exercise and eating habits) is my goal!

Cheers!

OMG..i thought I was the only one totally grossed by seeing people walking around neked in the changing room. I change in one of the booths.
this is what had driven me to reaching the gym fully dressed, just so i wouldn't have to endure the sights :-)

like the gym-character descriptions...
