I got an email today asking for some help in securing a section in TRIBE. The author says that she and her friends would like to play with TRIBE or Island People but her "plus sized" friends are having difficulty securing a costume in either band. So, I asked her several questions regarding the size issue specifically pertaining to TRIBE since it was the first I heard of this and also because I registered a "plus sized" friend myself in Fireman with no problems. Then, I got another email later today from another young lady with the same problem!
That led me to calling TRIBE to clear up this alleged size discrimination only to understand, like I suspected, that TRIBE is in fact making costumes for all sizes and to the masqueraders' measurements.
Other bands have costumes already sized so it is a case of finding your size in the remaining sections but I can safely say this is not the case with TRIBE and NO, I am not their P.R. representative.
Fact is these young ladies, all read my blog and really want to play mas next year so I hope they will read this (before they get my email in response) call the mas camp as soon as they can and get a costume in one of these sections which are still open:
Pierrot Grenade
Bat
Imp
Majorette

People always trying to blame TRIBE for that but my aunt who is a 40 DDD has always gotten a bra in whatever section she wants there.
kevian it is hard to say with IP; the website shows what is sold out online but at the mas camp it is different. Last time I checked Taureg,Sahara Jumbie,Harem Girl pink,Raiders and Nubians were still open. BUT of course it depends on if they have your size.
By the way I didn't know there was a race on to see who is selling out first LOL.
But Saucy, yuh eh easy! Yuh well hook up people!
Harts has size restrictions also. They gave my guy friend problems also for a 3X pants...
Hotts I had to get to the bottom of this issue cause I know TRIBE ent playing it to thi year!
anon this is the first I hear of size restricitons for men!!
"But Saucy, yuh eh easy! Yuh well hook up people!"
Yah mayn, she's an English major wid ah Masters in Social Work! Lmao....I'm sure nuff pple does email she fuh de hook up. Rescuing desperate masqueraders everywhere!
Saucy, I know someone from IP and I know for a fact that they also have plus size costumes, but osince their costumes are pre sized, one its sold out its sold out...atleast that's the impression i got from her
anon I believe you, the thing with that is once the size is gone that's it..which suckks for the people registering late!
Dolli all in a days wuk!
Yes, Harts complained and said they MIGHTN'T be able to get 3X for him. but they still take my downpayment etc..and he done buy plane ticket, so come hell or high water - he fitting into what they give him
They also said they want him sign a HEALTH WAIVER.that was a first...
:O
That is a first indeed! Just curious, is this person severly overwieght (which is probably what Harts is assuming) or do they just like to wear the pants baggy?
What I don't understand is why if you paying your money that you can't get whatever size you want? Why should it be a problem? The whole point is that the make the costume for you not so?
A health waiver? that is some serious thing. How he feel about doing that?
He's not severley overweight with 3 bellies and on life support! He's big compared to Trinidad standards but not grossley obese. I've seen men in Harts pics who are big also... I don't blame them for the Health Waiver..but why is it so difficult to get a 3X pants...
i have also heard many people are saying that TRIBE is a racial band!?
A HEALTH waver?! First time I hearing that one! They have a problem with he size but they eh have no problem with he money though!
I find that situation with Harts quite strange, because I see VERY large people in the band in proper-fitting costumes every year.
wow..health waiver??
anon who asked about TRIBE being racist,I can only speak for myself; being of African descent I have never encountered any form of racism or prejudce from TRIBE even last year with the whole size issue I was able to get my DD bra in Tale of Benguela.
I know one person who is on TRIBE's committee, she is not racist even though she is of caucasian decent, she is Trini, dating a man of African descent and is best of friends with my girlfriend who is of African descent. I also know another person involved with Red Antz and by extension TRIBE (since she was onboard since they were with Poison) and she as well is not racist and is of African descent. And,my friend's boyfriend is also involved in bringing a section in TRIBE this year, he is of African descent and not racist as far as I know!
I too have heard this rumour about TRIBE, and also Harts which is another band that I have played with in the past without issue. From what I see of the band on the road it is a mix of people; check triniscene, carnvialscene or even the photo I posted from the TRIBE book and you will see many diverse faces and races represented in the band.
Are the people behind TRIBE the band of a certain complexion? Yes,I used to joke they were the "red band" (play on the whole Red Antz name) but I have also seen people of African, Indian, Chinese and Syrian descent on their committee. At the end of the day anon is either you believe the rumours or not and until someone can provide me with proof that they are indeed racist well, then I cannot say anything to the affirmative!
I played in tribe in 2005 and with IP in 2006 and I can honestly say that I am going with IP this year because...although the tribe committee was in no way racist I did not like a lot of the ppl in the crowd. I am quite stoosh but the tribe ppl (not the committee) take it to a new levet. I am a light skinned trini with relaxed long hair(and I model up here, so I'm not ugly), but for some reason the photographers chose to mostly take pictures of the red ppl with curly hair...and if u don't believe me, look at their magazines...
Although IP is not as organized, the vibe was better for me and that's why I am going back with IP
Also I had a friend who played in tribe the past two years and when I asked him why doesn't he play with IP this year, he said...too many black people! I'm not knocking anyone playing in tribe, but I prefer IP...
ANONYMOUS!!!!!!!(anonymous again..sigh)AYE doh be hating on the red girls with curly hair. Is not my fault they douglarise the nation. And they eh give we a holiday yet!! And for the record...I does get the same attention whether my hair straight or curly so i really doh see how that could be an issue if you say you was red the same way.I does look like fair indian with my hair straight and a red girl with my hair curly.I feel you may have just taken it a little too personally. Maybe they just put pics of ppl they know..their friends maybe? I actually thought that most of the people in TRIBE magazine were average ppl and not particularly fabulous.I guess that was why I was not there (HA! JUS KIDDING)
And believe me!! I hear you when you say you did not liek certain ppl in Tribe but I not letting that stop me from wining dong.
anon 8.02
I can't fathom for 1 second that photographers would only be picking a certain type of people to shoot. It'd be more hassle for 1. 2. It could be people they know as carnival jumbie suggested - when you look at triniscene its the same faces all the time. 3 it could have people who see the camera and rushing for pics?? 4.the cameraman taking pics of chicks he find nice? I'm sure lots people didn't get their photo taken. What does it matter anyway?
I think it all depends on who the photographers take to. I get lots of photos and video play but that's because I happen to know a lot of these people. I know one girl when she played with Poison she was all over the place in photos and when she switched to Tribe and then IP, nothing. I agree with the Jumbie. Maybe you're taking it personally. I also know for a fact that photographers don't take pictures of you if you're looking "eager". They prefer more candid shots. I know a lot of stush black people play with IP; how come nobody accuses them of being racist? Is it because people still believe that black people can't be racist? Maybe it's people's own personal hang ups that make them feel they will not be welcome in certian bands. Me, I does make sure Icomfortable everywhere.
i tried to register me and my girlfriends in Tribe, we are all a size 14 and we were turned away.
Maybe they are giving you lip service so that u will not write anything negative about them. We therefore registered in Island People with no problem at all. Check it out saucy.
anon, while I do not doubt your experience two things to note:
1. I did not and have never identified myself when calling TRIBE for information.I call like any other masquerader seeking information.
2.On the first day of registration I registered 4 people, two of them are a size 14 by American sizes; both wear a 38D bra, waist 33,large bikini and one even took a whole suit.
I have to ask, did you go the mas camp and were turned away? Were you trying for a section that was already sold out? If not, what section were you turned away from and when did this happen? And what section did you eventually register in with Island People?
thats a lie......cause my friend who is a similar size registered fine. You are probably a IP Rep or supporter just of full of hate. Check out the TRIBE magazine and you will see people of all different sizes. Take your hate on TRIBE and Saucy elsewhere!
I think that discrimination with Tribe is possible if you were trying to register with one oftheir special section. Tribe has their own floor sections and then they have sections contracted out to ppl. I have heard from a reliable source that one special section in particular at a point only had ppl with a size 2 and below (are they even alive??!).It is completely up to the discretion of the section owner if they want a certain "look" or only want their costume to be portrayed on a certain "size". I find it hard to believe (with all the bigger ppl I know who play in Tribe) that ppl have been discriminated just on their size in a regular Tribe section.I think its more likely that they hate on you cause they doh like you or yuh friend. lol, I've been on teh receiving end of that a few times lol!
Oh and BTW the person who left these inflammatory comments against TRIBE is yet again "anonymous". Why Saucy Why!! If I had get blank so i would have blow up Tribe in every daly paper. The whole of Trinidad would have know my name. I caertainly would not be anonymous. How we never hear about such blatant disrespect during registration?? That is why that comment seems even more unjustified
diva what you said rings true for Tale of Benguela this year, the section with the size restriction of 36D bra and 30 waist. That section was a special section and what was funny is that I was at the mas camp and spoke with both sisters involved with bringing the section about the size restriction, only to find out one of the sisters wears the same bra size as me.When I called them out on the fact that they were not catering for my size, that sister said that they were willing to do a bra for me, at a small additonal cost ($30.00), seeing as it would take MORE appliques to cover the bra,and that the sister who has my bra size had to do a bra for herself anyways! They were cool and very pleasant so I did not make a fuss, I was just happy to get in my section of choice and was glad they were accomodating. But I can see some other section owners might not be willing to do the same....
yup, diva it is always someone anonymous!
Wait. Anon 8.02. Dey eh take yuh photo so they racial?! But what de arse is this! Kyah, kyah, kyah! But allyuh eh easy nah! Allyu eh easy at all. Yuh eh think something wrong with that presumption girl?
But Saucy, just that one page yuh post up yuh seeing ALL kinda people of different racial backgrounds, different sizes etc!
Yuh know is the same ting I say Hottie! And I make sure and flip through the book again and examine all the people cause I heard, before I got the book and saw the DVD, that is only one type of people featured in the magazine and the dvd "red, slim and sexy".Like people eyes does gloss over the "thick things" and "the darkies" and hone in on one type ah people!
I've never played with Tribe before so I can't give any first hand info, but I my cousin has been playing with them and she's a dark skinned person and she's never had a problem. I also have quite a few dark skinned friends who have played with Tribe and their pictures are all over so I find it hard to believe that they are racist
Hi Saucy,
I just want to give a little info. I was in Trini last week and got the section of my choice in IP. The bras are running big, according to the size chart online I should be XL, but the large fits perfect. I had to settle for medium which also worked for me, I have a little extra cleavage showing but not excessive, just sexy. I say all this to say anyone living abroad if you have some that is your size that can go try the bra, do so. You may be surprised.
xena good to hear you got your costume girl! And it is better the bras run bigger than smaller, too big is always a fit my mother says.
LOL! True dat Saucy
