Wikipdeia defines an urban legend to be “a kind of folklore consisting of stories often thought to be factual by those circulating them. Urban legends are sometimes repeated in news stories and, in recent years, distributed by email. People frequently say such tales happened to a "friend of a friend" - so often, in fact, that FOAF has become a commonly used acronym to describe this sort of story. Urban legends are not necessarily untrue, but they are often false, distorted, exaggerated, or sensationalized.”
That brings me to the Urban Legends that surround Trinidad Carnival and yes, there are a few that I have heard happened to a “friend of a friend” yet I don’t know anyone personally who can say if it is really true.
Urban Legend number one, is quite popular, that is the one where for j’ouvert some women have been duped into dancing, wining and even doing unspeakable acts with a vagrant, usually mistaking him for just another “dirty” masquerader roaming the streets of Port of Spain. In the story the woman in question is almost always some high society chick who would be mortified if the story got out. I even heard this about an ex co-worker of mine, but added to that story was urban legend number two; sex on the streets for Carnival!
Everyone I know always has a story of someone they know who had sex in an inebriated state with some “stranger” either on top of a rooftop, or in an alley or behind the North Stand on Carnival Monday or Tuesday. These encounters are reported to be hot, heavy, laced with alcohol and after the strangers go their separate ways never to see each other again. Even my husband said when he was a teenager it was always a big thing to try and catch someone in the act, but alas neither he nor I have ever seen this, only heard the stories of friends of a friend.
The most bizarre Urban Legend I have heard to date is that many “mothers” dump their children at the hospital in lieu of hiring a babysitter for Carnival. The story goes that during Carnival week, mothers take their children to the hospital saying they are suffering from some “mysterious” illness, leaves the child there overnight for observation and never returns until Ash Wednesday! The rationale is that the hospital is as safe a place as any to leave the child; they will be fed, looked after and the mother does not have to think of looking after the child until she has had her fill of enjoying Carnival.
Another popular Urban Legend is that on Carnival Saturday you can get costumes so cheap that it is almost like getting it for free. I have heard this really happened to several people, but this year when I passed by the mas camp of a popular band to check out my friend’s section on Carnival Saturday there were people still coming to purchase costumes and they were being sold at the regular price. I really want to know who has gotten a costume for next to nothing on Carnival Saturday, if they got an entire costume and with what band.
I have also heard that the Dimanche Gras show is rigged, that certain calypsonians belong to a Lodge, hence the reason they wear large, ostentatious rings and that lots of "obeah" is practised in order for them to win. The Legend goes that Calysponians play dirty on that night, trying to sabotage other's in the name of victory. I have never even been to a Dimanche Gras show, but these are the stories I have heard coming out from that event.
The scariest Urban Legend to date has to be the one that circulated one year for Carnival, where people were talking about young men who were sticking persons with H.I.V. infected, blood filled syringes. Rumour had it that they were attacking women and there was some panic about going into Port of Spain for j'ouvert because of this. Of course it all started because this supposedly happened to a "friend of someone's friend"
Finally, the Urban Legend that I have been hearing from since I was a child has to do with a certain “marse” man, I have heard “them" say that Minshall’s band has a “Jumbie”. You know, I think it started with his portrayals of Calabash and The River where it was rumored that he was “dealing” and that was why someone got killed playing with his band every year! Now, I am not saying this is true in any way, form or fashion but when the young man got his head crushed under the tire of a Minshall truck I remember hearing the legend spreading like wildfire.
Since these are all the Urban Legends that I can remember, it would be interesting to hear other’s stories, you know, the ones that happen around Carnival time to a “friend of a friend”. So, feel free to share with me any Urban Legends of your own.

Morning saucy, For the past 5 yrs or so it has been de norm for my friends and i to hold back on purchasing costumes till carnival sunday or even monday right after j'ouvert and it worked b/c we were getting the costumes at 1/2 price cause dem bandleaders dont want to keep nutting on their hands. We were poison fanatics, but this yr dey get smart...cause come carnival sunday we were checking out sections to see what discount we can get and low and behold most of them were only giving $300 off de costume (if so much). When we inquired y dis is so and if we can get a further discount since its about 10 of us..most said that if they dont get the costumes sold is no scene, since they get the costumes sell anyway to persons from other islands who have carnival after ours as they come to trinidad to purchase or the bandleaders export the costumes for other carnivals..and they get full price for them!!! so is no scene with most of them if they dont get full price or near full price for dey costumes...girl dey getting smart boy, leaving us last min masqueraders to pay nearly full price if yuh want to play mas. De only band i knw that were selling their costumes at 1/2 price was Island events since i guess the sales weren't so good. And girl..people rush dem for costumes at 900 all inclusive and full costume some of my friends grab at it. I wasn't interested in them so i opted out..but ah was there to see for myself.
Thank you very much for clarifying anon, I had an idea to do some research next year for myself to see if I could get a "cheap" costume come Carnival Saturday but from your experience this year seems like I will be left empty handed!
See how these bandleaders get smart, like I said, people still have this myth that if you wait for last minute bands does be giving away costumes for next to nothing.
Saucy morning! Ah change meh lock girl! Anyway, anon is right. You used to get them cheap but not anymore. They get real smart. Or greedy.
Hottie good for you! She must be want to dead!
Girl, read the update on meh blog. It in the comments.
I just read it :D
I can't put them costume thing to chance at all boy. If I doh get a costume come Sunday I might just dead oui.
Saucy, I saw a tourist wining on a vagrant one year. lol. She was drunk though, so she really had no idea what she was doing.
mani you lie! Why didn't you take pics? LOL
Gyul I was like 10....You want me to take pics of people wining? Yuh want meh mother clout meh?
or I didn't know yuh was so young when yuh see dat :D
LOL! Is LONG time that manicou eyes could see good!
lol, yes it scarred me for life, lol. Hottie, i does gape good yuh know.
Regarding the public sex, I have absolutely no doubt that it happens quite frequently. In fact this year, on the streets of St. James, on Carnival Tuesday, IN BROAD BLINDING DAYLIGHT, I was treated to the sight of a couple leaning up against a wall, practically welded to each other. He had his hand up under her skirt (which was short enough for you to see that his hand was also well inside her underwear), and she had her hand inside his pants pumping away like there was no tomorrow. They made no effort to conceal what they were doing. They were not even in an alley, or behind a fence, but right on the sidewalk for all to see. If that ain't public sex, it comes mighty close.
As for the free costumes, I really don't think that kind of thing can happen these days. But about 12 years ago, after emerging from a mud band on J'Ouvert morning, one of my friends decided at the last minute that she wanted to play mas'. Next thing you know, we up in Harts mas' camp, waking up the poor fella who was sleeping on the floor and begging him for a costume. So skilled was my friend in the art of persuasion, that she walked out of there with a FREE costume in her hands. I tell you if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would not have believed it. She spent Monday getting it altered (it was about 4 sizes too big) and was out on the road in full regalia on Tuesday. But I think the days of free costumes are long gone.
Let's talk about sex.
It is indeed a myth that Trini women are loose during the Carnival. Yeah, there are always some minority of jammettes, but they are professionals as the ply their trade. I am so glad that your husband never caught anyone in the "act" because it confirms the urban legend is just that, a myth.
I am always so impressed with our women in Trinidad. They (masqueraders) are so sexy on the streets, but there is still a genuine modesty (not a contradiction at all, and I absolutely love Trini women for this way about themselves). And they are not easy. As Trinidad's Carnival becomes more know around the world, maybe close to the popularity of Rio's Carnival, I sincerely hope men are not drawn to our cultural spectacle because they think our women are a free for all. One is far, far, far more likely to see sex in Rio's streets than in Trinidad during the Carnival.
But here is the real contradiction. Horning is a national sport in Trinidad & Tobago, but you have to live here to enjoy to spoils or suffer the bruises. Ah lie?
Minshall was dealing what?
This is a ongoing (hence tired) urban ledgend that is prevalent amongst Trinis living in foriegn lands.
American/Canadian/English woman goes to Trini carnival with a Trini friend.
American woman meets hot sexy Trini man in a fete, and they spend all of carnival week together. Great parties, great mas, great sex, and Trini man has sweet sweet talk and makes American woman all kinds of promises.
American woman returns home after carnival, gives up her good high ranking job, sells her house, ships all of her things to Trinidad, and flies to Trinidad on a one way ticket.
When American lady reaches Trinidad and rings Mr hot sexy Trini's bell, his wife answers the door. When American woman confronts Mr. hot sexy Trini man, he says, "Who you?"
American lady is left stranded on the streets of POS, with no return ticket home, and her furniture in transit.
This has been on ongoing rumour since I immigrated to the states as a teenager. I have "heard" about this happening to so many people, but after 15 years,I have YET to actually meet one myself.
Besides, although I know some woman can be dotish, I just cannot see someone packing up their entire life to move to another country with no interim communication with the man.
The whole thing doesnt make sense, but each year without fail, I continue to hear this story circulate everywhere from NY, to Toronto, to London.
Con el diablo, Anonymous.
Trini Orisha girl....lawd have mercy...what a sad urban legend. I hope that is just a myth yes, cuz I cyah believe woman could be dat dotish....
Well I never hear that American woman story yet. Neither the Minshall one. I mean, take a good look at Minshall. If the devil appear in front of Minshy now he drape him in cloth and write a poem about it. Allyuh, leave Minshall alone. Mwwwwaaaa. Minsh, I love you. You're a genius. The rest of them could kiss your gifted ass.
Saucy I am one of those people who benefited from getting costumes cheap on Carnival Saturday and Sunday, but within the last 3 years or so, they get bright and charging full price
Hottie,Mani, anon like I said that was what I have heard about Minshall, I myself do not believe it. It was just like when they were saying David Rudder puts baptist chants in his songs and people does ketch "power" to his music :S People does real come with some crazy talk !
I never heard the one about the American woman giving up her life for her Carnival fling, but I don't doubt that the "legend" lives.
squeezle I am speechless, maybe that couple was stone drunk! I have seen wining in the street that is best left for the bedroom but never saw public sex.
Saucy,
I have to say I have witnessed with my own eyes here in NY people ketch power when Rudder was on stage performing. A few years ago there was a free concert as South Street Seaport and folks came out in droves. Well yes, man was jumping up and falling out in de crowd! I won't go ass far as saying is Baptist chants in the man music, but I do get a certain feeling from Rudder's live performances which i can't explain.
Saucy, they HAD to be drunk or high or something to be getting on so in the road. But whatever they was drinking or smoking - I don't want none!!!
And I walked right by them and they never lost a beat. I was literally 3 feet away from them as I passed. And just a couple of houses away were a group of little children playing football in the driveway.
In hindsight, I wish I had the presence of mind to say something to them for behaving like that with children a few feet away, but I was just in complete shock, and all I could do was walk away.
Well said hottie hottie...Mwwwwaaaa (this is the first time I ever saw this spelling and it feels exactly the same as the real thing :) )
Minsh ain't dealing. On the contrary, he is intouch with a higher power. Carnival is we people art, feel it, live it....
Saucy, Rudder IS ah Soca Baptist...Ah haven't ketch the power since "Trini 2 D'Bone" doh.
Saucy, Rudder's music does have certain chants and drums that is associated with "Orisha" between him and Singing Sandra if you listen you could get carried away....As far as Minsh is concerned I think he is in touch on a higher level and I've heard rumors of him being involved in "obeah" before....remember when he played Sante Mani Te (forgive the spelling) his mas in my opinion is still something to be reckoned with!
thanks tacariguagirl,I thought I was the only one who heard the "obeah" reference to Minshall!!!
I love David Rudder's music, beats, chants and all!
You are welcome!! I'm a Rudder fanatic...remember "Chant of a Madman"
It funny how there's some people on here that back up a couple of these "legends". I think sex is of course the biggest one, they say the same about Brasilian carnival too, I have a friend from Rio who can give solid evidence as well.
hi all:
Well, i have enjoyed this post and the comments. growing up i did hear rumors about minshall mas being devil ting, but nothing specific about him actually dealing up in the occult.....yikes! Personally i just think man before his time, and most people ain't ready yet.
as for the women being loose, i did hear a different spin of that story, not about Trini women, but about a foregin women ending up sleeping with a vagrant. i never believed it though, but hey.....i guess it could happen.
Sex on the streets??!! This is not Brazil and Squeezle you shold have bathed them down with cold water and run away quickly.....lol. I do have a friend who lives in Salvador de Bahia and he told me that what they do there for carnival is people walk up to strangers and kiss them on the mouth, not a peck eh, a full on kiss. Alls i got to say is "i wish a ni$$ga would!!!!" he'd walk away with pieces missin!! That's just out right NASTY!!! And I hope we never get to that point here in Trini.
The David Rudder thing, I actually thought he was Baptist :S Either way, i don't have anything bad to say about him, one, cause there's nothing bad to say and two, my mother will hurt me....seriously.
ttfootball, sex in the streets is more likely in Rio, not in Trinidad. I know of a few American men who go to Rio during the Carnival for "easy" sex. I have a live and let live attitude, but that is not true of Trinidad's Carnival and I sincerely wish this to not happen here. Because most of Bikini mas echo a Rio style, does not mean we are expressing a Brasilian sensibility (openness). Again, I am no prude, and I could wine down the place with many, but the suggestive movements of wining is no open invitation to sex. Thiefing ah wine is one thing, but sexual groping is way out of place. I welcome the tourist dollars, but if that's what they are looking for, sorry. We have a culture down in ah Trinidad and it's not Rio. Love it for what it is. And come back next year and love it again.
Let's talk more sex.
One of the traditions of New Orlean's Madi Gras is more than a few women briefly expose their breasts (and recently down below) for a beads chain and/or plastic dablunes. Recently, men have been exposing (in the same peek a boo way) their penises for the same trinkets from women.
does that mean there is a "Boys Gone Wild" video circulating with clips from New Orleans?
Could be saucydiva, I don't know...
But here is the thing, would women view "Boys Gone Wild" in the same tantalizing way men view "Girls Gone Wild?" Just asking.
ummmmm ....I would hehehehe..jus fuh kicks ofcourse
Man Squeezle, I think I would have been just like you, just too dam shocked to see that public display. The only thing sexual I ever saw was a couple going at it in a van outside a fete on Carnival Saturday and of course me and my friends had to look through the window because de dam truck was shaking so dam much. Yuh know we start tuh pound down the doors and windows and then run. I heard the Minshall rumor about him dealing with de devil. But that is just pure bull. The man just dam talented
Oh gorsh law, the people make a little bit of effort to be discrete and you go and spoil the tender moment? lol
Ahem, some respect people!, that tourist woman was my Mom... she stayed, found another Trini man, & the rest is history...
LMfAO!!!! ;-)
This is all so amusing, never heard about any of it, so it's also educational...
LOL!
Urm, there IS a Guys Gone Wild. BUT, it's geared towards a male audience, rather than appealing to the ladies. They just have nuthin' for the wimmens.
Now, doh aks meh how I know this, but I was in complete shock when I saw the ad on late-night cable.
careful Karabana, people might think you are serious :D
cb I will google it, but what you doing up watching "late night cable"? YUh was watching cinemax or showtime nah :P
Skinemax girl, Skinemax. I think some ah dem tourists does get tie up when they see how we does be wining but anytime one of them put God out of their thoughts and play they crossing the line they does start to collect hurry slap. And I'm glad for that. We have a big enough AIDS and STD problem as is. Aye, speaking of which, I remember a big fete in Arima a few years ago one of meh photographer friends take pictures of this couple having sex in front the crowd. Imagine man singing on stage and my boy lift up he woman skirt and RESTING piggy from behind. And she holding on to the stage. And POSING for the camera. And AS for Wet Fete, I see some pictures. Here nah. All I can say is that some people existing in a world completely beyond our comprehension.
The parents leaving children in the hospital is a first.
Heard most of the others e.g the Lodge ring thing I've heard about other 'society' people being in it never calypsonians.
I hear about the hospital thing though. And as for the baptist thing, both SuperBlue and Rudder have been influenced by the Orisha/Baptist faith and this shows in their music. I've seen people ketch the power off of rock music, if you know what I mean. (Hehe, I guily ah dat one once OR twice mehself. Any song with a guitar solo and I GONE!
