Birth of a Blog

As I approach 65,000 hits to this blog in less than four months, no one is more surprised at the longevity of this “diary” and the fact that so many people still visit daily. It all began quite by accident, this blog I mean, borne more out of a need to have a place to put some photographs I had taken at TRIBE’s band launching than to broadcast a constant stream of Carnival information. What it has done however is to illustrate to me how many people love Carnival and the deficit in information that was being relayed, especially to those not living in Trinidad. And I am often reminded of the diversity of visitors I have popping by ever so often, persons who contribute to this blog as well with their commentary, ideas and even suggestions.

For those who visit islandmix.com you might remember me posting on that forum under the sobriquet “Saucy Wow”, now choosing an alias says a lot about yourself, well at least to me since I believe in a psychological connection behind the unconscious choices we make, hence I took on the title “saucy” not because I look like Denise Belfon (or have her wining skills), but because I have been always accused of having a “hot” mouth. Never one to bite my tongue I was the same on that forum, often posting whatever I had to say without censor, that is until I was censored by the powers that be. In addition, when I went to TRIBE’s band launching last year I took lots of photographs because those persons who reside overseas and visit Islandmix really did not want to wait a few days for triniscene or carnivalscene to post photos, they wanted to see the costumes almost as if they were at the launch themselves:

TRIBE launch August 2005, photo by "Saucy".

As a consequence, I did the same thing when I went to the launch this year, and I especially wanted a friend of mine to see the costumes so the idea popped into my head to create a blog, since I also have experience writing another blog for the other passion in my life, travel. From there everything evolved to where I am now. Like I say in my blog profile, I am a Carnival baby, if I were not documenting my obsession with Carnival on this forum, I would still be doing the same things I do daily. I would make a cursory check of the mas band’s websites to see if anything is new, which costumes are sold out and if they have posted any news. I would visit mas camps to get a look at the costume in person, read the newspapers paying attention to all the articles that are Carnival related plus I would be on the phone with my other mas cohorts discussing mas constantly because that is just how nuts we are over Carnival.

What this blog has done moreover is to broaden my Carnival experience and for that I am ever grateful. I am appreciative for the emails I get from the smaller, lesser known bandleaders, sending me photographs and information about their band which I gladly share on this blog with others, who might be ignorant of their very existence. See, apart from my photographs and those I have clearly linked to other photo sites such as carnivalscene.com or islandevents.com (who by the way not only know of this blog but I have stood side by side with their photographers taking photos at events) many people send me photographs with instructions that I can use them on my blog if I desire. Therefore the network of individuals that I come in contact with has broadened and by extension those who visit my blog also share in my erudition.

Finally, I want to say thanks to all the personalities that stop by my little space daily sharing a small piece of themselves and adding to the overall feeling of community on this blog. So many of us are from different walks of life, even separated by continents and yet we all come together to share a love of a festival that symbolizes the truly all inclusive nature of our society. Thanks for all your emails, I am never too busy to offer advice or try to assist in anyway that I can so keep writing, thanks to all those who I have met so far (though it might have been unexpectedly getting a cup of coffee a Rituals or at Jebelle in West Mall) and thanks most of all for your support.

I want to leave you with a quote by F.Scott Fitzgerald which sums up my entire motive behind Trinidad Carnival Diary: “You don't write because you want to say something, you write because you've got something to say.”

Oh GOD! She quote Fitzy!!!!!! Saucy, yuh's meh girl fuh life. I know I still hadda send that photo eh girl but pressah in dese here parts. When ah come dong we go lime. But I pussonally want to say THANK YOU. I know you don't have to do this, I know you get requests that are sometimes demanding, but you never complain. You tolerate us mad ass commentors - Dolli and myself come to mind - and never complain unless people start to get on like backsides. I know that your Tribe photos were a BIG help to me, enabling me to co-ordinate my little band of masqueraders that is seperated by the "Wide Sargasso Sea" as Ms Rhys would say. So I say thank you and I wish you all the best and hope that blog continues well past Kyarnival. It's evry easy to come on here every day and read a post but unless you have a blog yourself you don't know how hard it is to come up with a post every day.

Morning Sauce. As was mentioned before, first thing I do when I get to work on mornings is pull up your blog. It used to be Guardian, Express, and the Newsday. Now you de first one. I can never thank you enough. Through you I have learned so much about Trinidad and Carnival. It's quite a pleasure to find someone who has a passion for Carnival like me. Your blog in quite informative. You can't imagine how much I've learned from your blog. I've lived in foreign since a young child and only started coming back in the 80's and then only for Carnival. I come from a family that is more reserved and on the formal side so most of the time they think that I'm just carrying on a way bit too much about Carnival. All this information should be compiled into a nice little survival book for Carnival. I hope I can get a chance to meet you and thank you in person for your wealth of knowledge and information about Carnival. You are a God send.

Morning Saucy! Morning All!!

As I said last night, I love this blog like I write it (which I never could do, cause I just not that dedicated).
It's a breath of fresh air during the day, even when my arse under pressure at work, like right now I might add. My boss making a presentation to some Ministers this afternoon and not only do I have to do ALL the preparation, he now telling me I have to tag along!!!

But I digress....

I appreciate your honesty, I appreciate the neutrality in your approach to providing info, I appreciate you answering my emails, and I love, Love, LOVE the community of bloggers who make me laugh out loud in the people office. So yeah, keep it up. I am here, even on the days I don't say anything, it's because I have nothing to say ;)
I think what you do is wonderful, all you have to do is look at the number of hits this blog has received.

Oh by the way, I have to "give a shout out" to Hottie Hottie and Prettidolli. What a lively duo. Love them for their honesty and forthrightness.

Saucy the time you dedicate to the art of carnival is wonderful. Like most people here your page is in my favorites - right under the express and just before newsday. I enjoy your creativeness along with the feedback. You really have a passion for writing and informing and I hope that your blog goes on for many carnivals to come!

2."To the world you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world."
I doh know who in de jail said this...is meh grandmauddah! Number two applies to you Sauce, as your blog & efforts are appreciated and have helped many, including myself. Keep up the excellent work Diva. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The New England Journal, and WWD are ketching SERIOUS horn b/c of you chile... They get their feelings HURT!

Thanks for the heads up anon, ms. pebbles can stay right there over at her myspace playing kindergarten games by posting up nasty comments about me. And to think, this is someone who calls themselves a professional business woman and uses the myspace page that she has defaced for business as well!

I am not stopping to the gutter to meet her on her level and she is free to write whatever she chooses. I am just SO glad that I finally have confirmation on whom the "anonymous" poster was, you know the one who would leave insipid comments about "swinging off bandleaders nuts".

The truth has shown itself and now everyone can see who really the ugly, jealous person is. I have never met this woman... I mean person, and yet she insists on occupying her time speaking about ME on her website.

As my mother always says, people don't pelt big stone at tree that don't bear fruit so let her continue her little tirade and tantrum! It is doing nothing to me whatsoever, in fact she is bringing even more attention to THIS blog by her antics and yet she is the one saying I am looking for attention. I am sure the irony is lost on a brain so miniscule :D

BTW are you checking out McFarlane's launch today?

Saucy babes, sometimes we see pictures, and we wonder what them people thinking, how they feel, what make them think they sexy in the fete, why they are at the blasted band launching when they should be home taking care of dey child(ren). Carnival is a culture, it is a vibe, it is a community, not just a business to exploit “getting on baaaad,” but it is truly a BUSYNESS. I had been very, very, hungry for information of things in Trinidad, and nothing islandevents.com, carnivalscene.com, torontolime.com (the absolute best for music), triniscene.com, the carnival bands’ websites, the Trinidad & Tobago online news”papers,” and other numerous websites could satisfy this craving (yearning really). The vast majority of these sites are all about promoting and selling the thing to their credit, but they don’t have the heart, the essence.

Saucydiva please take a diva’s bow, as your blog “by accident” (I’ll say destiny) IS providing what the others have not (and quite frankly, probably cannot), even with their forums: real TIMELY information about the essence right there, down in ah Trinidad. And if I am allowed to be so bold to speak for the majority of your readers, we love you for providing the Carnival buildup just like “ole times” (always overused , I know, many times old is not so good), but in a new way (via blog, with intelligence, eloquence, wit, genuine passion, and oh so, so, so very Trini!) for people (a community, indeed) around the world.

Thank you darling… Mwwwaaaa!!!!

hey, it's true masquerader as I was awaiting my invite and was informed that the launch is canceled.sorry, I know how much you were looking forward to it!

"No offense but Dolli, dais your fren?!"

I'm not offended. Hottie, Pebbs is about as much of a fren as you are I guess...LOL. I guess she could be described as an "Internet acquaintance"? I have never met Pebbs personally as I have never met Sauce or yourself. She's always been decent to me, so it's a nonissue at this point. I play the fool on the web, but I am EXTREMELY low key and private for my own reasons, therefore I DO NOT put myself out there like that. I "met" Pebbs online when I was formerly a member of another site, so she is quite familiar with meh "Dolli" persona. I only know AMPRINCESS personally, so when folks come on hey with they Dolli this and Dolli that understand that it's an online ting and ONLY that. Pure jokes and kicks.

I wish Sauce de best with her blog.
I wish Pebbs de best with her MySpace/Constep endeavors.

I hate to be getting orn like both Switzerland AND The Hague, but these women are two adults and there is more than enough room for them to succeed. Both trees can bear fruit. This posting of negative comments about them on THE TWO websites needs to stop. I am glad that comment was deleted about ugly people, bItches, and so on b/c I GO LEH YUH KNOW! I am ah product of some of the foinest Trini & South American brek cuz' meh Nanny seh so. :p

Sauce did talk about $2.00, I don't want to have to revert to meh 2cent jamette bizness.

Don't mek me put mah rollers back in again.
Ah don't want to have to light up meh ciggy.
Is whey meh slippers & housecoat?
Allyuh try an behave allyuh self eh!
功夫阴道allyuh母亲!

Nice to meet you too Sauce!

Neway kudos to you and all the others who have started blogging because of you for providing me with more things to do while I should be doing de ppl wuk. You all are braver than I am because while i feel like i've got a whole bunch to say I am way too private to start a blog because once I start I won't know how to stop and Trinidad too small for me sometimes yes. I bet when you started you didn't think that come carnival Mon/Tue there would be a couple hundred people trying to figure out which one is saucy and looking for the hubby in his warrior head piece to try and figure you out...you are now a mini celebrity...lol
Good for you, but better you than me.

Again Good Job!! i have a separate folder on my pc with bits and pieces of your blog for me to reference as i get closer to carnival. From my face gems, to my makeup to the boots link. Thanks again.

Anyways I want to join the rest of the Bloggin family and thank you for this Blog. I dont have much time these days to follow up on my TnT like I used to and so now what ever time I reach home I look up your site to see what is the happenings. Doh worry about small minded people and dey arse..God bless you with a talent and he has put you here for a reason--who knows this simple blog can be a gateway for bigger and better things. I guess I am thinking ahead and wondering what would happen when Carnival done if yuh go keep the blog up in another form. Anyways ah going and make some Creole Cocoa meh modder bring up from home..yuh know the kind that have that thick film on top--YUM It cold no arse here in NJ someting like 30someting degrees..but I digress Sauce doh forget to post the details about the Blogger Lime.

Saucy,

Always walk with sincerity in your heart and through your pen and all will be good. The bloggers who read your words daily know that the information you have been providing has been neutral, timely and ALWAYS entertaining. You call good when it good and you call bad when it bad. You answer everyone's questions even when said questions were asked tens of times (Ahm, saucy what is the phone# to IP's mas camp again? LOL) And though this is an internet thing, unless people truly have split personalities, I have enjoyed getting a basic picture of the regular posters on here and truly would enjoy meeting you guys over the Carnival season. We all lead separate lives with separate issues, but we all converge here for the love of the mas right? I am so glad you started this blog because I know someone else in the world shares my passion for all things Carnival. Keep up the good work Saucy and may your pen (or should I say keyboard?) never falter.

I have to put in meh two cents here! Saucy girl, you have no idea how invaluable this blog is.. I check it as religiously as I check my email- and allyuh thaz often!! (ah soundin kinda sad there but say wha!)

I really admire what you've done here Sauce.. I mean, to put this much effort into a website for the benefit of others- that goes past a love for carnival and into the realms of true altruism! Is a real service you're doing us all, being so dedicated and faithfully providing plenty plenty Carnival tidbits. But more importantly, is the quality of the posts you present- take a bow for real Saucy Wow! LoL

And I an all going to be lookin out for yuh come Carnival 2k7! LoL. Like yuh is a celebrity for true.. Even though is a "small-fry" kinda ting, you are well on your way to becoming the centre of our Carnival Universe! Hehe.

Hi sauce, I been writin all kinda comments, den I realize it ain posting cuz i switched to dis beta ting...steups. Anyhow, I wanted to say how much I appreciate your blog, the great work that you do and how much this blog has added a real outlet for me to get so excited about Carnival. Thank you so much for keeping me informed everyday.

Saucy, I'm continually impressed with what you've been able to do with your blog. In fact I'm in awe. You've definitely filled a niche that was most neglected. Trust me 65,000 visitors in under 4 months in the blogging world is somewhat unheard of...unless you were some sort of celebrity starting off (I know cuz I've been blogging for years). So I bow down to you. Keep up the great work!
