All speculation can now be laid to rest. The Minister of Culture Joan Yuille Williams in her address to parliament has stated that UDeCott has delayed construction long enough and while there was a delay the Grand Stand was allowed to be used for activities, however the widow of use kept getting smaller and if there is any more delay it will drive project costs up. In effect, the demolition of the Grand Stand will go ahead as planned with the raw materials being re-used in other projects.
Mrs. Williams stated that it is economical to reuse these materials and that nothing will be lost but the "physical structure" which will be replaced by the Carnival Centre and at that time our Carnival would have come of age. The following plans for Carnival 2007 were revealed:
- The Jean Pierre Complex will be used for Dimanche Gras, including judging of King and Queen and other Calypso competitions previously held at the Savannah.
- Mas will be on the streets; judging points are Down Town, Piccadilly on the Greens, Queens Park Savannah South (in the vicinity of Princess Building Grounds) and Adam Smith Square. Victoria Square will not be used but bleachers will be constructed for spectators.
- Panorama prelims will be judged in the panyard, semi-finals at the South Western end of the Savannah entering by the Paddock and exiting on Dundonald Street. Finals will be held at Skinner Park in San Fernando.
So, there you have it folks. I am sure all the daily Newspapers will be filled with all the details that I have missed so be sure to check the Express, Guardian and Newsday tomorrow.
These revelations have been such an anti-climax; just for one minute I had a ray of hope that they would use the Savannah one more time, even when I should have known better. Now, it is just to move on and make the best of what will surely be a new experience, "mas on the streets!"
Oh, and by the way I am sending an email to TRIBE that I am
NOT in favour of Piccadilly Greens as a judging point and I hope they will skip that one!

awww i was just praying that they would have had pity on us and leave it in the Savannah. Oh well we just have to make the best of it on the streets.
saucy...I'm a bit confsed...what part of the savannah is being used? is it on the side by BP? and isn't that by the stage?
anon the part of the Savannah that they say will be used as a judging point for mas is right after the tennis courts... after yuh pass memorial park.. if you were/are in Trini that is where the Circus was.
Think of it like we were going into the Savnnah.. except we not, we just going ROUND the Savannah and waving goodbye to where the stage used to be. :S
Saucy, it aint that bad to pass by piccadilly street. A couple of years ago, poison passed there and it was good..no fights, stormers etc. The people on that side appreciated the fact that a "big band" decided to pass their way. They also had bleachers for spectators. But ah predicitng dis new venue by de savannah will be chaos unless dey have a good plan in place or else is more jam session
*sob* Oh well...It would have been nice since I'll be among the thousands of first-time masqueraders who will never know the joy of jumping across the stage *sob*. But on the bright side (which STILL hardly compensates), most of mas is played on the streets anyway. And it's not like people threatening to do away wit mas (unlike Panorama - ah mean, wah de ASS do dat man??). *Sigh* Wha yuh go do, yes. Well, for one, I will make damn sure that I will make de best out of it! Cuz I am a TRINI and dat is what a proud Trini does!!!!
Ah ha! Ah find something!!!!
"Oh, the centre for the parade? All right. I feel—and this is a personal feeling; it has to be discussed among the stake holders—we can use the southern part of the Queen’s Park Savannah between the Princes Building where a stage could be erected," Kenny De Silva, National Carnival Committee Commissioner (tendered resignation aside- Minister of Culture Joan Yuille Williams has not accepted the resignation at this point still), in a Trinidad Guardian interview March 5, 2006.
I do believe there will be very well a stage, worthy of the old savannah stage experience: Queen’s Park Savannah between the Princes Building IS on the official parade route stated today.
Read the full Silva interview here.
dougla_1 between me and you I heard that as well, but unless it comes from Joan's mouth I am taking it with a grain of salt. If we get a stage, surprise surprise; if not, well we will be playing we mas STILL.
no stage, not even a little bitty one. Geez!
dead or alive..still we comin! I give up on de stupidness now yes. At dis point..we have exactly 2 months for we mas...come snow, rain, or hail...we will be havin ah time.
I jus cyah take de foolishness wid Joan and dem..steups
Saucy, it not up to the Minister of Culture for a stage or not. It's up the NCC (National Carnival Commission) and UDeCOTT (Urban Development Corporation of T&T). Joan has given the official statement on the issue of the beginning of the demolition, where the locations of Panorama will be, and the parade route (because they both seemed to be hung up on the Grand Stand thing).
I am definitely with you, we go be playing WE MAS STILL, no matter what : )
we shall see dougla_1 :D
If we get a stage, better fete! If not I will be going around the Savannah with my Johnny in my hand!
Mr. Kenneth De Silva, Chairman (resignation tendered, not accepted to date) of the National Carnival Commission. Oop, sorry Kenny.
Saucy, ah go take a drink with yuh on that. Right now ah at work so it's only water for now. When ah get to Trinidad, ah go chase it with some Johnny!!! LOL
dougla_1.... i really doh know nuh!
It's like they adamant on their decisions. I'm just really blah! I don't know wah else to say. I give up!
since there is definitely no savannah stage, will there be any of the parade of bands show on tv at all, and if so, i wonder where they will be filming.
caisoqueen DAT'S RITE!!!! Dead or Alive!!!!! WARRIOR COMIN!!! LOL
The mas' will go on!!
Well, kevian, you know who will test it out first, in full force, Carnival Tuesday....Harts!!! 8 AM sharp!!! LOL. We will see if it holds up. LOL
Stage or not, I/we will enjoy myself/ourselves to the max, but I do understand many people wanting an actual stage ABOVE the ground. As someone said in an earlier blog comment, it's a goal and it is part of the thrill. To me that seemed almost irrational, but I have since come to appreciate it is a specific ephemeral feeling that adds an intangible joy to their masquerade. Honestly, I did not understand this when I first started reading Saucy's blog, but I really think I am beginning to understand the "obsession" with a stage. I believe it's more than being on camera, as I thought in my simple ignorance. It is TRULY part of the culture of WE MAS. As Saucy said, "better fete!" Where does that feeling comes from? It comes from a joyous heart, not anger.
Saucy, Sorry haven't been on in a while, I have so much catch up reading to do. But I had to stop by to see if anyone was talking about Road March for 2007 yet, Machel's new song Higher Than High.
Check it out, tell me what yuh think...I know here is not the place for it, maybe you can start it in a new blog.
It's on Toronto-lime.com
yup heard it and it has yet to grow on me :S
I am not liking that one too much though I know lots of people who like it more than One More Time.
Hi Saucy....Happy New Year to you..
Trini friend of mine was saying that there's always speculation about the stage but it's always available in the end...another one was saying there's no way the savannah stage wont be used for many reasons...what do you think about this "official" address made by the culture minister?Have you and should we give up hope for sure about the savannah stage being used...
anon,Happy New Year!
My honest opinion is there will be no Savannah stage as we know it.
Possbilities exist that they might still build some type of stage along the route, like by Princess Building grounds but don't hold your breath.
Thank you Saucy...
Is it true that there's been many yrs with speculation regarding use of the stage??
anon from my recollection there has never been any issue with using the Savannah stage; this year is unique in that there are plans in motion to build a cultural centre at the Savannah and therefore the old grand stand structure will have to be demolished.
I've heard talk of a temporary stage being built for this yr....Is this true Saucy??
