More Changes for Carnival 2007

Apart from having a new home for Carnival 2007, the Dimanche Gras finals will also see a new feature; calypsonians will be required to perform only one song. Now, for those who are not familiar, the calypsonians usually perform two songs, inter spaced by the showing of costumes for King and Queen of the band.

The reason for this new development has been cited as time control, hence shortening the Dimanche Gras show. Now, I agree that sometimes the show does tend to run a bit long, but for me it was the perfect timing. After Dimanche Gras is over that’s the time to leave home for j’ouvert.

Apparently not all calypsonians are in favour of this change as reported in today’s Express:

One song? Not now, say calypsonians

TUCO's one song seems to lack harmony.

That was the consensus from several top calypsonians when the national Calypso Organisation hosted a Christmas gathering on Tuesday at its Jermingham Avenue office at Belmont.

While most of the genre's practitioners seemed to agree with the move they were unanimous that there should not be a rush to implement the measure and cited Carnival 2008 as the ideal time to make the change.

Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams said on Monday the National Calypso Monarch Finals would be moved to the Jean Pierre Complex and competitors would be required to perform one song instead of the customary two renditions.

Kevian I agree with you "focus on one song & produce a better product" but the seasoned singers normally do produce 2 great songs.
My thing is they do not know bout time control or time management, if it was arranged better and by people with more common sence the calypsonians could get to perform their 2 songs but no they looking for short cuts, I know I love to here the serious kasio and then the jumpy one. I swear these old folks need to go and bring in new people with fresh ideas.
Yes it does go long, but if things were planned and set up the day before and on the day the show starts on time everything should run smoothly. And they could inform the competors that points will be deducted for going over their time limit or even if they came in late etc etc etc..
Only in my country all this slackness could happen!
But as they say the show must go on, and that it will!

I have so many fond memories of watchin Dimanche Gras as a child. Dat used to be night when we make a nice Pelau and Oil Down...and I got to drink Green Sands. Anyhow..I always fell asleep during de middle of de performances.. and looked forward to what Cro-Cro was going to sing in de second half. Well, I guess is one performance we have now. Changes-Changes!

I don't know why people always use 'change' as an excuse for screwing things up. Just because something is different doesn't mean it is better!

The reason the Dimanche Gras show runs long is because of poor planning and inefficient time management. If the event was properly organized, two songs per calypsonian wouldn't be an issue. As it stands now, the show is full of delays that have nothing to do with the length of the actual performances. And I agree with alexia that penalties should be imposed on anyone who causes delays.

But instead of focusing on improving the management of the event the organizers choose to deprive viewers and patrons of the full scope of the performers' creative process. And the culture continues to suffer...
