Nothing holding me down!

Facing the uncertainty of exactly where I will be parading in my Fireman costume come Carnival Monday and Tuesday, I have noticed many people having unsure, negative and worrisome feelings about what their Carnival 2007 experience is going to be like, especially with the latest developments in the Savannah Saga. Now, I will admit at times I do get annoyed at our Government for not giving the Savannah a last lap for 2007, but you know what I have faith that when all is said and done Carnival 2007 will be amazing!

We are Trinis, God made us resilient and though we may suck our teeth at change, when all is said and done we embrace it and find a way to make it our own. For those who left Trinidad for whatever reason, journeying to another country where memories of home are all that makes the day bearable sometimes, don’t you find a way to adapt? And not only adapt, but still retain the core of what it means to be Trini. You know exactly which shop sells the West Indian groceries, you can make callalloo from spinach leaves and you have all the Carnivals across the United States of America, Canada and even across the pond in London, marked on your calendar. Just the fact that there are so many statewide and worldwide spin-offs of our Carnivals should say something about us, about the fact that we might be in “their” country, but that does not mean we have left “our thing” behind. Our culture is something that has bridged the gap across oceans for West Indians everywhere.

So, when other islands are now boasting about and promoting their 2007 Carnival, I get the sense that they think Trinidad Carnival in 2007 is in some sort of jeopardy from which they will benefit. But, and no offense to any other “small island”, even if the worse predictions for Carnival come true I will still have 100% of a better time than celebrating Carnival on any other island. You know why, because I LOVE my culture, I LOVE my country and nothing anywhere else can come close to our Carnival; even with all the bacchanal and all the drama Trinidad Carnival is still a festival so unique, spellbinding and exhilarating that it can never be replicated or duplicated by any other country. Nevermind there are Carnivals all over the world, there is only ONE true Trini Carnival.

Today I am confident, I am confident that picking up the newspaper and reading another headline about the NCC or NCBA is not going to get me down. I take comfort in the fact that change is inevitable and with it comes an opportunity to make history. In 2006 for many of us, we were part of the generation that crossed that Savannah stage for the last time, and in 2007 we will again go down as legends. We will be the first to experience this “mas on the move” and each and every masquerader has a duty and a responsibility to inject all their Carnival spirit into this parade and make it work. And even though we may not wholly embrace this change, it’s time to start looking at it as something positive; lets begin to see the glass as half full, instead of half empty.

When I am too old for the bikini mas, swathing my body in some sort of fabric in a band that has “meaning”, I want to me able to tell my children that the very fact that they can enjoy Carnival as it will be then is because I was one of the troops that took up the challenge in the face of uncertainty and charged forward knowing that I only had that one chance to contribute in making Carnival 2007 a success.

well said saucy!! and me being one of those trinis who now live abroad, i definitely found a way to adapt!

savannah or not, carnival will still be a success and all the worries going on now with the ncc and ncba, one red bull and grey goose, and you're well on your way to forgetting that they ever even existed...lol!!

Well said Saucydiva.

I found your blog a month ago, and everyday you provide food for people's soul, home and abroad. Thank you for communicating the Trini essence (complaints and all). Thank you for your boundless energy to write everyday. It is a pleasure to read your thoughts. The true gift of Trinidad & Tobago to the world is it's people, and Trini Carnival is an amazing legacy of rebellion, struggle, creativity, and love. To really immerse oneself in the real thing the only place is in Trinidad, indeed.

Tell dem we reach, for 2007, again.

spread some of that love to Bagogyul lol.

Morning All:

Saucy, this touching. I'm serious, I welled up reading it :S

Anyhow, I am glad you decided to adopt the attitude I've taken from the get go. It's going to take a heck of a lot more than no savannah to ruin Trinidad Carnival. As I mentioned before Trinidad Carnival is a staple in the world arena, second perhaps only to Carnival in Rio in popularity (and the jury is still out until I see for myself). Our Carnival has been around for generations, and over the years there have been changes I'm sure, but true it all, Trini Carnival has only gotten bigger and better.

And as 2007 masqueraders, whether Trini, Trini born, Trini by heritage, Trini by association, Trini by injection (hehe), Trini wannabe, or onlooker, we have a responsibility to make whatever comes our way in 2007 WORK. Rock your costume, drink your drink (vodka and cranberry for me), wine yuh wine and have a blast. If we all do it, I can guarantee Carnival 2007 will kick ass!!

We are the Kings and Queens of the Land!!

I read this post to the sounds of lil bit's "carnival in my country". Do you think another venue will now become the "big stage"? What about the foreshore? I'm still in love with the feeling of my boots touching the wooden planks that ascend the stage. I'll miss the "bouncin/ warm up" that occurs before the section "buss thru" the security barricade oh and being on stage and my section is still 3 sections behind.

Good morning all.

Saucy. I had to close my office door when I read this. I got teary eyed.

This hit a note so strong inside of my Trini-living-abroad core. Yes, we learn to adapt, but we are always Trini.

I could not have said these things better myself.

Thank you for your wonderful blog, and the ray of sunshine and connection to home that you provide through your words.

Ok, I needed the encouragement, and reading Saucy's blog, I feel encouraged. I'm not sure if I'll be doing 2008 carnival, so I will make the best of 2007.

I'm so ready for it. I've started having dreams of being in costume already...

Well good for allyuh.lol But I not spending over five hundred dollars to walk around Woodbrook. Trinidad carnival could haul they backside next year with all the shit they keep trying to feed folks.

Anonymous said...

Well anon, that comment is like farting real stink in a crowd and looking around to other people as if you didn't do it. Really, what's the shit that's being feed to folks? Be specific, nah. And, when were you last in Trinidad for Carnival (I assume you are in the States)?

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

hmm...how about spending over 500 dollars to stand up ALL day on Charlotte Street? We have been parading through the streets for years, only thing then versus 2007 is that the goal was to get to the Savannah stage where we spend about 15 minutes in total....15 minutes out of the whole day! We spend much more time walking..oh sorry, I mean dancing through the streets of Woodbrook,St. James and Port of Spain than we do for that 15 minutes on the Savannah. So I ent see the BIG difference not having a stage going to make on the overall parade.

Anon I can't believe you are a Trini, and sometimes I wonder why you even bother reading this blog if all you do is try to spread your negativity; but is alright I ent worrying with the shit you trying feed either :P

Dougla Trinidad carnival 2k7 vibe thus far has been a huge disappointment to many. It started off with the outragous costume and hotel prices, to not having one wow blasted section to choose from, to very few flights not flying non-stop to Trinidad, and now they saying they not having a blasted stage next year, the crime rate etc.

Shit for all that drama I can storm everybody blasted band on the road in my labor day costume because nobody will be non the wiser. If their security even play like they trying to put their hands on me. I will sue their backsides! If Trinidad really wants Trinidad to be ranked as the "Greatest Show on Earth" The organizers need to do a much better job acting like they care and getting their acts together for the type of money they are now demanding. Sorry I am not going to pretend to be happy and keep supporting something that I care about and contiue to watch it go down hill without being honest about how I feel.

ah hope allyuh keeping good. saucy gyal yuh does always know how to hit d nail on d head. like i said in a past comment meh eh care what dem bloody so called politicians and ncc or ncba decide to do.

one ting i know for sure is dat they cyah stop carnival and the parade of the bands on the streets of trinidad. i going an have a ball next year. ah spending too much money, even bringing people down to share a taste in "we ting" notting go spoil dat for me God spare life, ah planning to have a safe but funtabulous carnival 2k7.

see allyuh soon.

yuh know anon ah could understand yuh frustrated, but yuh mad in yuh tail to tink yuh could just storm d people band jusso and not foresee something yuh might get kicked out if security recognise yuh doh belong to d band. there are rules to being in a band and ways and means of identifying the right band members and if security stop yuh, yuh best check yuhself and realise yuh in d wrong.

and to besides the only one you have to blame for not getting a ticket to tnt and all dat is yourself. carnival is d one time where hotel prices, car rentals, ticket prices which naturally be costly because they will always be in high demand for carnival.

and God bless us all whilst we on d road and partying and have faith, stay safe and maybe crime will not be a factor for Carnival. Go out in groups, do the right thing and hopefully we should all be fine.

you see anon we are all carnival lovers and love we country no matter what we cyah be bothered w/stage or no stage. once we have we music trucks, some liquor, and we wining we happy too bad. ah hope yuh have a better day. doh wallow in your sorrows too much.

Saucy great post!
I was going to comment on "anonymous" but similar to the approach of your post, better leave that bad vibes alone.
Is true that crossing the stage was a ritual of carnival that ppl look forward to but we really need to get past that and jes damn well go and have a good time.

Anonymous said...

waspwidfirecracker thanks gyal I'll tried.LOL I'm just being rebellious because it's breaking my heart to see Trinidad carnival and many of it's old traditional values being flush down the toilet so eaisly. It seems like everybody scared to be honest and take a stand and say enough is enough. I just real vex how they seem to be doing everything wrong to make Trinidad carnival vibe really sour for folks. Instead of them trying to make it better so more people can enjoy it. Anyway, well you also continue to have a good one too and I'll keep my uphill battle with trying to fix Trinidad carnival so I can have a better carnival like in the good old days hopefully by 2k8.lol -:)

Leaving that negative Anon comment alone.... Stage or no stage (though I'd prefer a stage, lol) I'm going to have a blast in my Fireman costume. Crime problems...heck, there's crime right in my backyard in NYC. High price of costume....shims, allyuh doh want to know how I spent this weekend Christmas shopping. Airline problems, well, it's better than being on another "Flight 93". Allyuh get de picture, think positive and bringing that positivity to Trinbago carnival will let it continue to be the Greatest Show on Earth. :-)

Ok Anon, that's better for explaing yourself. Now, when did you last spend your money to go to Trinidad's Carnival?

I ask these questions for a specific reason. I am well aware that many people who have left Trinidad & Tobago seem to relish the opportunity to down cry Trinidad ever chance they get. Remember "Trinidad is sinking," that was so hilarious to me how folks outside of the country blew that way out of reality. It is some kind of weird psychology going on as if the bad news they hear about Trinidad and Tobago justify leaving that "backward" (I seriously don't agree) place. Some in my family have spoken like this.

Trinidad & Tobago has a unique opportunity to show the world how to get along. I have gone back every year for the last nine years and I like the trends that they just might reach that beautiful example. I know it is a struggle because politics is such that it exploits differences and perceived injustices (including economic opportunity for all it's people). But these differences will be resolved peacefully (Trinidad & Tobago is one of the most stable Democratic Republic in the Western Hemisphere). As for Carnival being better, yeah that is a problem, but in that too there is hope contrary to your view. Believe it or not Carnival is just beginning to emerge as a NATIONAL all inclusive (all people) culture in Trinidad & Tobago. Example, how many females play pan now? I have been to Brooklyn, London, Toronto, and Miami (I would like to go to Australia's some day) carnivals with the strong Trini influences. Even with some of the "problems" with Trinidad's Carnival it is by far the best that I have experienced. And it is the mother of all.

My early childhood was in La Brea (yes, we were poor economically), but I wouldn't trade that time in Trinidad for 10mil(US) (and Lord knows, I really need 10mil(US) like yesterday). Peace be with you.

The only thing I have to say is Carnival has been costly for sometime now its not like its just 2007 - so I don't get where you coming from.

Is there anybody who isn't going to miss the QPS stage? Hardly likely. But the carnival going ahead with or without it. Most of it is parading through the streets anyhow as saucy said. I feel like there just is no point in trying to be negative about it from all now. I like denial lol. Not really but maybe when they do get their act together, it may be better, who knows. It'd better be better after taking it away from QPS. A bigger better stage in an appropriate location would make me happy. Where that is I ain't know.

People, whilst I agree prices skyrocketed this year, I still think it will take more than that, no stage, etc to ruin Trinidad Carnival.
Who makes Trini Carnival what it is?? WE DO!! So I am going to do my part to make sure the world sees exactly how we do it in TnT.
