Carnival Baby !

When I say to people I am a Carnival Baby they naturally assume the reason for christening myself as such is because I was born in November, therefore coming to the conclusion that I was conceived during Carnival. Checking the dates for Carnival the year that I was born I saw that Carnival did take place in early March so who knows if that reasoning is true! I prefer to think of myself as a Carnival Baby because I was borne from a woman who loved playing her mas and instilled the same sense of reverence for Carnival to me from a very young age. These days my mother no longer dons a costume and parades the streets on Carnival Tuesday, though she does play Monday night mas, in spite of that she still makes the pilgrimage into Port of Spain every Carnival Tuesday and enjoys taking a jump in my band when she sees me on the streets.

Looking at old photos of my mother playing mas over 25 years ago it became clear to me that being overly obsessed with putting together the "perfect" Carnival look with matching boots, stockings and makeup is not something new. In the photos of my mother her boots coordinate with the costume, face is adorned with glitter and sheer stockings matched the costume to a tee! This is what playing mas always meant to me, a chance to transform yourself into this larger than life, beautiful character with a stunning costume and parading through the streets dancing to the music

me and my mom Carnival Tuesday

From an early age I loved seeing my mother dressed up in what to me were the most spectacular costumes and I always wanted to do the same, playing with bits and pieces of her costume long after Carnival had come and gone. Some of the fondest memories I have of Carnival Tuesday are of seeing my mother all decked off in costume and waiting at the Savannah to see her cross the stage. I was also in awe of the feathers and beads, running around collecting the stray ones that littered the Savannah after a band had crossed the stage and feeling utterly stunned when a stranger gave me their headpiece or part of their costume.

The first time I played mas myself I was five years old. Here I am as a tiny clown, complete with makeup and red nose (which I am not sporting in either of these photos because it hurt when worn) and I was pretty happy being a clown until I saw some girls dressed as Wonder Woman! That was the birth of the Diva, from the minute I saw the Wonder Woman costume I told my mom I no longer wanted to be a clown I wanted to be Wonder Woman!! She even reminded me of that when we looked at these photos together. There are many more photos of me over the years one as a white cat, the other a pirate even dressed up as the blazing sun; I have played Kiddies Carnival with school and private bands since I was five years old, both in Port of Spain and San Fernando!

the first time I played mas

As a teenager I migrated to playing j’ouvert, Victor Rique was the band my parents and I played with seeing as I was too old for kiddies’ mas but felt too young for adult mas this bridged the period until I started playing “big mas”. The first time I played “real” mas it was with the band Barbarossa and after that there was no looking back! I have played mas every year since then with the exceptions of the one year I went to St. Lucia, another year I simply did not play mas because I was in love and the year my friend got into an accident and we both sold our costumes. I have played with Barbarossa, Harts, Poison and now TRIBE. When I say I am a Carnival Baby that statement speaks volumes; I was born into Carnival grew up in Carnival and live Carnival even today. This is the history behind the birth of a Carnival Baby!!

Saucy, I think the only thing left for you to do at this point is to either progress to playing Queen of the Band or to bring out your own band!

Good Morning Sauce and Bloggers.

Dam Saucy!! I had to check the calendar, to see if it was time for my PMS episodes. I dont know why, but as soon as I saw those pics... the tears rolled out my eyes. LOL (AH still here sniffling). The memories just touched somewhere deep inside me. You have truly put to words (and pics) the history, legacy, and deep love that so many of us have for carnival. Thank you.

I know I have said this before, and many others are saying, but I think you really have your finger on the pulse of what masqueraders and carnival lovers want. I can understand the baby steps. If ya bring a section. I dere. Honestly though, in a few short years, I would not be the least bit surprised to see your name associatd with every aspect of carnival. Saucy Band, Saucy Fete, Saucy Brand accesories, LOL.

Thanks for the memories, and I know you will be creating those memories for yourself, and the rest of us for many years to come.

TOG

P.S. - I was also very happy to see you in those bell bottoms. I was not sure what was considered old or young bands, and wasn't sure what age category I would fit into. Those bell bottoms confirmed, I am still young, because we are in the same age group. LOL.

I almost feel like you are telling MY story in this post. I've been playing mas' for as long as I can remember, and parading around all over the country in those little costumes, many of which I helped to build myself, make up some of my very fondest childhood memories.

And it's not just the mas' that is in me. My grandfather was a calypsonian, my father a pan arranger, my uncle a costume designer. I think that if it were not for Carnival, I would not even exist. I LOVE being a Carnival baby!

p.s.
The bell bottoms ROCK!

Girl like all ah we have de same pics. I have pictures of my mommy in her boots and her sequins. One with a giant sweet peppar on her head.My father was a devil mas man every year til a few years ago. All i remember was waiting for him to come and check us in the square and the hours it took him to wash himself off every year. He still has the SAME little enamel cup and the SAME whistle from when we were small. Now he is a sailor mas man. He sits and creates his costume on the dining room table and always saving all kinda crap from during the year to add to this costume. And my boy takes his costume to DC for dc carnival too eh.

I used to go and sit with granny by victoria square every year because is Carnival Saturday we getting drop off every year when we finish playing Kiddies carnival. I played with D midas for many years and I have my picture from when i played mas for the first time when i was 3yrs old. I think my sister and I were in disco fever or something so. We had on silver tube tops and red lipstick. They carried me in town by the stage, i cross it and i think they let me lime a 5 then we went right back home.

This year i am indoctrinating the small man and if you see drama. The whole family excited. This child will probably be the only non individual in the band with about 8 adults following him for NO REASON. Just because they want to freeze orchard and carry a back pack and say dey was there. But me eh mind because I know somebody will want a lift up. Then is straight by grandma he going and i will bounce him up tuesday waiting for me somewhere on charlotte street. The cycle starts again....

Saucy I enjoyed the article. It brought back memories for me.

I too also qualify as a carnival baby. The year carnival was held in May, my mother 9 months with me was beating pan with my father in Sliver Stars. Two weeks after I was born. I have the carnival-pan fever running in my veins.

My mother was always involved in making and playing mas. My primary shcool I went to (Diamond Vale) she was on carnival school committe so I was playing mas from 1st year.

But you Saucy are a true carnival baby your blog is a testimonial to that.

Oh my lord..Jammette girl u couldn't say it better..the cycle continues cause its the same thing my parents did and now i do the same for my son. WOW!!! Yeah is from aunty, granny, uncle, jumping up and grandpa waiting by de corner of frederick and Park Street by T&Tec waiting for them to take pictures and all de drama... de whole massive playing kiddies carnival with my son and niece come carnival saturday

If you guys want to send me pics of you playing mas when you were kids go ahead!! The hubby compalning that I did not put his pics up so maybe I can do another post in favor of all the other Carnival Babies/ Jumbies. That would really nice!

Yes, jamette it is about the cycle. It is about the love. It about our legacy, it about we generations, and it's about this unique culture born right there in Trinidad. Teach the children well, we nah go lose, the simplest joys of life.

Saucy, your mom is quite beautiful! She encouraged, the natural gift of her daughter to dress up, and she set a fine example for her little excitable carnival baby. Her attention to details didn't fall on fallowed ground, at all, as you have let us know about your detailed preparations so dutifully. And I must point out the lady's boots is fierce!!!

My, my, my, you "represented" Harts well. Very lovely. You look well put together, and yuh were ready for dem ; ) (body glitter not over done, nicely done).

Wonderful blog post!!!

And thank you for reminding us that our memories are created today, and someday our children shall grow up to be Carnival babies, and live the joy, "the cycle starts again" :D

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

dougs do you have any pics of you playing mas when you were younger?

Anonymous said...

Thanks again for this post Saucy. I had to call and tell my mom thanks for coming to every kiddies carnival complete with sandwhiches, snacks (catch and corncurls) and a never ending cooler of juice. She explained with 5 kids and their friends to chaperone in different Carnival happenings (mas competitions and school panorama) she didn't play herself but enjoyed it from our eyes. Please consider adding a gallery next year so we can share our carnival memories!

Sauce,

You were killing in 'dem yellow bell bottoms!!!! I love it! A real DIVA from the jump!!

I have pics with my mummy and granny too, I wonder where they are boy?? Hmmmmm.....

Anyhow, great post!!

saucy darling, I really wished I did.:D I lived with my grandma in La Brea from 4 yrs to 10 yrs of age (a little bit of family history as to why), and Carnival was not high on the survival priority. Then, I moved with mom to the USA when I was age 12 yrs. Since that time I visited Trinidad twice, not during Carnival, before I fell in love with Carnival just 10 yrs ago, and actually playing mas just 5 yrs ago.

So, I am a Carnival "baby" by finding the love on my own as an adult. The love of my life in my heart, a Trini, once said she saw this little girl, high up on her daddy's shoulders during one Carnival and she imagined that it was me and my daughter (I have no children at this point). It was one of the most touching visions she could have told me, because, that is exactly how I see myself as a father, sharing this amazing experience with my children.

You described so well, gathering those savannah treasures of broken away feathers, beads, and other mas pieces. The endless play of pretending you were in thing with your put together mas from the treasured collection of pieces you had, days if not several weeks after Carnival had passed is quite a wonderful window of your early Carnival adventures.

The first awareness of me knowing anyone who actually played mas I must have been age 6 yrs. It was my cousin who was about 14 yrs getting so excited about playing her sailor mas in Point Fortin. I vaguely remember a stage, but I VIVIDLY remember white powder everywhere!!! Machel is correct, yuh cyar play mas and fraid powder!

My London Trini friend's family is like bmob08's, and squeezle's. Her father was a mas designer/maker in San Fernando, and she was seasoned playing mas practically since birth. And she played pan about 7 years ago too. I met her in Trinidad about 7 yrs ago, and I certainly loved her Carnival spirit! (She is playing in TRIBE this year in the Fancy Sailor section).

I wish I had childhood Carnival pictures, but let's see what the cycle brings, nah :D

saucy, why did you leave harts and now playing in tribes???

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

anon I left Harts for Poison actually. My crew of friends wanted to try Poison which we all heard was SO much fun. One year they left Harts and jumped with Poison in Pleasures (which gave birth to Tribe) section and came back to report that it was REAl fun! They went downtown, crossed the stage late etc.

With Harts we crossed the stage first and then jumped up in Woodbrook/St. Clair for the rest of the day. They convinced me and my other friend to try Poison. Well, that was a disaster and a culture shock! Prior to Harts I went downtown with Barbarossa but it was never the madness that was Poison and their 50+ sections!

We stood all day on Carnival Tuesday on Charlotte Street. Unfortunately we also picked the wrong section, our costume fell apart, we were stuck in the middle of the band and drinks ran out before we crossed the stage.

My friends who played with Pleasures had a really good time and they convinced us (again) to try a different section the following year. We played with Sonia Mack and were to the front of the band and had an awesome time! I really liked the all-inclusive vibe, going downtown and crossing the stage later in the day.

The only thing I did not like was not having a lunch stop and having to sit on the road to eat! So the next year when TRIBE broke away from Poison I followed. My friends who left Harts for Poison played with Pleasures/Tribe the 2 years and had nothing but rave reviews for the band.I have to add my reviews as well, TRIBE was a very good time! The ONLY thing is that the costumes are pretty skimpy and "cheap looking" compared to the Harts costumes.I was used to lots of beads and feathers with Harts.
Nevertheless the time with TRIBE was awesome and that's why I am still with them! This year I also like my costume alot.

I still think Harts costumes are very beautiful and affordable and with no stage this year I am interested to see if they follow the route.I would be tempted to play with Harts again if I had all my friends playing there again. It's the kind of band you enjoy more with a whole group of people than solo.

Sauce,

I find some grainy pics of my mother and some pics of my sister and I, unfortunately i am scanner less, I'll try to see if i can rustle up a scan tomorrow. I also found some pics that my sister wouldn't let see the light of day if she knew what I was doing.

As far as the little man goes, poor fella thinks he is playing mas WITH Machel 'Tana. And is every day he asking if is tomorrow yet and if he can go get his costume. But we still waiting to see how he react on the road. Knowing him he will be like wth is this madness! But we will see...

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

What band is your son playing with? Poor child he sounds like he SO excited!! I have a feeling he will enjoy himself but he might be looking our for Machel all road ..LOL.

Ok, can't wait to see the grainy pics! You def. need to find a scanner tomorrow eh.

He is with the Lilliput theatre. The name of the band is Smelly its about the pollution in the environment...papayo! All he and I know is that he has a bird on his head. He is most concerned about that.

Saucy,

i have lots of pics from Carnival as well...didn't really play Kiddies mas (does playing in school count?!) but every year my mom played mas. My dad ( a pan lover, and former pan player) wasn't really into playing mas, but used to pack me, my sis and a couple cousins into the car carnival monday and tuesday and head into town so we could watch mummy and her friends cross d big stage.
Mom no longer plays (she stopped when i was 12 or so) but she's till into all the carnival stuff. Sooo...i'll scan pics and send to you.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Thanks Shelly-anne,
looking forward to pics from you snd Jametee. :D

Saucy, 'rah's and karabana's encouragment to bring out your band is quite a complement to you, indeed! I do think you are quite correct in keeping it real at this point to consider bringing out a section.

Please do consider a section SERIOUSLY, and with your solid focus on quality, value, details, convenience, and personal attention (you mentioned you would like that yourself!!!). It will take quite a bit of planning and getting your "rolodex" (contacts, for key services) spinning. However, with you as the linchpin, it will work. Remember when Poison grew to 10 thousand plus masqueraders, it was surprising no one seriously made a breakaway band for several years before it did happened. Trinidad Carnival is on a pretty good growth projection (for me, I sincerely believe quite strongly) for the rising involvement of Trini's outside of the country and new tourists who will fall in love with Carnival in Trinidad.

Do keep attention to your details of quality AND classiness, and you will have pretty cool sections (whatever they will be throughout the coming years). Try your best to include the internet in practically everything you do, in your business model. Of course, for your local network, it will probably remain phoning and personal meetings quite a bit).

Go for it lady!!! Do something you love and grow with it!!! Justin Timberlake wants to "Bring Sexy Back", but I do believe saucydiva will "Bring Classy Back"!!! In my humble opinion, Trindad Carnival will grow into a serious worldclass hotspot, and it’s MORE that the drinking and parading in the streets. It will ALWAYS be about the CULTURE.

Godspeed, you beautiful Carnival Baby!!!
