Mas on de Move!!!!!!

Tuesday morning saw me waking up quite early as I could not sleep; came online and was kept company by another excited masquerader until we both decided we needed to get back in bed and take a nap in order to make the distance for the day. I set my alarm and about an hour later I was up; there would be no arriving late on Carnival Tuesday! Both the hubby and I were dressed and out of the house by 6:30, since the band was scheduled to leave an hour later. Of course I missed the makeup artist’s appointment and did my makeup myself which looked good enough for me!

As usual the traffic around the Savannah was chaos; we had clear roads from St. Augustine and over the Lady Young until before the Hilton. That was where the traffic started and hubby started to panic that we would be late. Thankfully we were able to navigate that two way traffic around the Savannah, park the car and make the trek to Stanmore Avenue. I swear I did lots of walking pre and post the actual parade this year!

It was while rushing to get to Stanmore Avenue that I realized my costume was giving me some problems! As I mentioned before my original costume, Fireman, just started looking less and less appealing so I changed my section. The new costume was Fancy Sailor Traditional (female version) which I have to say I loved! It was covered up by TRIBE’s standards and even hubby was concerned that it was too covered in the beginning but then he liked how it looked when he saw the final dressing. I found it was still sexy, long pants and all. Let me just say those pants weighed about 5lbs! They were made from drill which is a heavy material in itself, then the pants was decorated with beads, tassels, trim, and huge gold anchor cut outs. Added to that when I walked, which I discovered on Tuesday, the beads were hooking on each other making it difficult to move quickly. I had to learn to move in the pants, because they had the flare to the bottom and the beads that were giving me trouble, so that’s why my thighs are killing me today! I had a workout yesterday; see why the gym is a necessity!

Anyway, we eventually get to Stanmore Avenue and saw some TRIBE Bar Staff to the top of the Savannah, asked them where the band was and they informed us that they had not left as yet. Indeed as we discovered, the band was still on Stanmore, so we had breakfast seeing as we were not late! Breakfast was sandwiches, bake, sada and vegetables, doubles (from an onsite doubles vendor), peeled oranges and a yogurt drink. After we had breakfast I saw one of the TRIBE’s sector managers and joked with him that they told us we would leave at 7:30 just to get us there early. It was then he informed me that we had to wait on Island People which were ahead of us. Rumor has it that Island People left at 7:00 and changed their meeting place from the Stadium to by Jenny’s car park on Cipriani Boulevard, one street away from Stanmore Avenue.

So, we had a wait, which would be the theme for the rest of the morning, mas on the move it was not! After leaving Stanmore Avenue eventually (we waited for about 45 minutes) we chipped down Tragarete Road to St. Vincent Street, heading for Downtown Judging when we were again forced to wait for Island People who were ahead of us to cross the stage. I cannot tell you how long it took for us to inch forward on St. Vincent Street, I estimate about three hours as the first section (my section) eventually crossed the stage at approximately 11:30. The wait for me was not too bad, we were moving ever so slowly but the music and drinks kept spirits up, everyone I saw looked like they were having a great time! Too many other masqueraders passed TRIBE looking sour, what is up with that really? You are looking nice in your costume yet the face does not even show a smile!

Eventually we get to South Quay and after being pent up for so long waiting, I crossed the stage twice! Fancy Sailor was first, and I was ahead of the section just behind the individual character, but the rest of the section was close on my heels. The section was a big one, so when we first crossed the stage and I jumped up to my hearts content and reached the end, looking back I saw another group of Fancy Sailors still parading, man I went back and jumped up with them until the section was off the stage totally. My mom was at the end of the stage taking pics and while I went to take some more photos with her the rains started! Knowing that I had feathers to protect I took shelter in a makeshift bar on Broadway and saw a whole slew of soaking wet Warrior Spirit masqueraders as they came around the bend looking most concerned that their headpieces were ruined! That also included hubby who joined me in the shelter, he was most upset that his headpiece could possibly be ruined!Thankfully with some sunshine the feathers dried nicely and the headpiece was saved.

The rains eventually stopped, and I have to admit it put a bit of a damper on things. The drinks and music trucks went down the Promenade by Royal Bank then made the turn and came up the Promenade before turning unto Frederick Street. Being in the first sections we had no problem following the band. I even got drinks and water (to wash my pants hem lol) and chipped following the band across park and unto Tragarete Road; we were going in reverse direction from the morning heading back to Stanmore to make it to the Park in time for lunch. Clearly it looked like we might be missing the Savannah! Well, when we realized every single truck was lined up behind each other on Stanmore at a standstill we decided to cut across to Cipriani and just head to the lunch stop.

That was when we met Island People coming DOWN Cipriani, it was a parade of truck after truck after truck but in the distance we saw the Heineken Club Zero trailer and then I was confused as that trailer was in TRIBE! Eventually we got to the top of Cipriani Boulevard, Savannah side, only to realize the front of TRIBE was standing there motionless as Island People had cut through the band and was moving on like normal! Now, I am not trying to entice any band versus band bacchanal but I saw it with my own two eyes, no one told me this. We made our way to the lunch stop but the rest of the band took a while to catch up, obviously since they had to wait for Island People to pass through.

Starving by that time I am happy to report that we found the Bar b Que tent this time and at that point everything tasted good! Took a much needed cool rest in our car which was parked close to the lunch stop; got some air conditioned comfort, touched up the makeup, aired out the toes (got soaked in the rain) and hubby took a small nap. We had a long wait at the lunch stop seeing as the band got there long after us, then after ice cream we were told to meet the trucks by Harvards. By that time I was rejuvenated, only slightly disappointed we were not going to the Savannah then realized the crossing of the stage was no longer an appeal seeing as we had no stage, had some drinks and chipped down to St. James, we reached by Courts building when the rains came again! That did not last long; I think the Jumbie sent it away as the music truck started blasting it!

We made our way down St. James, got snacks of bake and shark (note to TRIBE please provide condiments for the Bake and Shark) and pizza. Then my feet started killing me, no joke! I now have a water bladder under my little toe on my left foot so imagine the pain I was in yesterday. I decided to seek refuge in the mobile bus to get off my feet for a while, knowing I had a long walk back to where we were parked later on. Found the resting bus, filled with some drunk masqueraders, a few sleeping soundly, and was treated to snacks and ice cream in the bus! Talk about a nice service. Anyway they kicked us out at 6:00 on the dot, the buses stopped working then. We jumped up for a little bit more until the darkness came; that was time for me to go home! Imagine I am chipping cool, cool and strange men just reaching out and grabbing me, calling “family, family” and I was not even wearing anything skimpy. That kind of roughing up from men who feel they could pull and tug at you during Carnival pisses me off; see if you look to answer them or retaliate in anyway they might be looking to injure you so that was my signal to go home! Too many gremlins like to come out when it is night looking for mischief!

Of all the sections I found Fancy Sailor, Dame Lorraine,Pierrot Grenade, Fancy Indian and Warrior Spirit looked great! Cow Mas was a mix and match section, some of the girls got tan suits like in the photographs on the website while others got a chocolate brown which looked awful! The backpack for Majorette was tiny, much, much smaller than the original! The Jamette girls looked good, but only those who got their corsets adjusted to fit properly, the others had to improvise which ruined the look. Fireman looked okay; too much orange in my opinion but the slender girls looked hot in the costume! For larger ladies the belt was too short! Jab Jab looked cute but I hardly saw the ladies wearing their headpieces! Dragon was a toss up for me; on some ladies it looked awesome and then others did not wear it well. Another section that did not look great (to me) was Bat. Something about it just did not stand out, maybe the colour did not work well with too many people, can’t say what, but it was disappointing. The costume that looked absolutely gorgeous was Imp! Wow that shade of blue just popped and with the whole ensemble of the wings, headpiece and feathered bra I thought it looked amazing; it is even featured on the front page of today’s Express.

Again I saw ladies wearing heels and even wedge sandals to play mas! My feet, in sneakers, were killing me so I only shudder to think what their feet are feeling like this morning.

I know there were issues with masqueraders to the back of the band and their experience might be totally different from mine (see why I do not like it in the back) but I had a great time, the hubby said he wished today was another day of Carnival! That is my Carnival round up, it was great and we doing it again in 2008!!!!! The countdown begins!

Saucy, I was looking for you!! Did a walk thru Tribe and met with some other bloggers. (They were SO beautiful! And looked hot in their costumes.)

I think I may have seen you walking away from your section, but couldn't be sure, as I couldn't see your wrist.

Can I say that Tribe security was real kicksy. One lifted the rope for me to get under and wine with some pa'dners. Another looked at my pink wrist band and told me to be sure to stay to the left of the truck as they were turning. And yet another told me to get in my section as the band was going to cross the "stage." Hee hee hee.

I looked in my section (Sacred Sand) for the green yarn, but only saw one girl who, when I approached her, looked at me in puzzlement and denied any knowledge of a blog. How weird is that to just walk around with green yarn on your wrist for no reason? Didn't look like kabbalah string.

Oh! And it looked like you did a great job with your makeup, Pretty Lady!

Sauce girl, I have not even read your blog as yet, but I just have to compliment you on your outfit and makeup -- one word -- excellent!

ciasoqueen I did not see you either! At one point I stood up and waited for the entire band to pass but it was WAY too big.. then when I walked to the resting bus I saw all the sections go by but did not see u or Tiffany.

cb I saw some girls from Jewel of the Nile but no Sacred Sand, though I saw the costume on the road and thought it was the nicest one in IP. Jumbie looked great as well.

Thanks for the compliment law!

Good afternoon Saucy! I am feeling grrrrrrrrreat!! Can I tell u that I was liming beside u for the whole day yesterday and I didn't even know it!! I was admiring that costume right thru.. not knowing it was u. YOU GO GIRL!
Also I do believe your husband took a number of pix of me and my crew..
I had me a time!! The rain jus improved the vibes on South Quay if u ask me! :) I stayed with some hard core stage crossers and went thru with each section. BTW.. the security was getting a lil rough with people in the back of the band.. trying to force them into sections.. come on now.. that's one of the joys of tribe.. every person in my crew had on a different costume.. made for great pix! :)
.. so much I could say.. props to Alissa Arjoon who did my lashes [and i kept them till last night] and Natalie who did the most ROCKING boots! I walked from town to the freaking foreshore and back and I am good this morning.
I continue to smile my head off. Gonna take a nap now. Its been great!! :)

sauce! I must have missed you during that 'power walk' haaha ha. But I really am sad not to have gotten a picture with you! You and the hubby look so so so great in that picture. I'd love to see it blown up and dry mounted. (I love 'mas pictures like that!) Meh boy (who was posting about finding the eating chit in his sada) finds your absolutely gorgeous. I wish he saw you yesterday!

saucy, i agree with your assesment of island people. they jumbied harts on mucurapo road yesterday evening as well and it was pandemoniam and the two bands tried to go along that narrow street in opposite directions.

Both Tribe and IP have gotten way too large. Tribe again this year cross the stage way too early on Monday. I hate it and they just can't seem to get crossing the stage at the right time on Tuesday just messing up folks carnival vibe. They got all their money and never me again in Tribe because the vibe just suck.

All that money down the drain and Tribe menue to consist of Crix is just horrible.

IP got points on road experience however need to work getting smaller and more organize.

I'm a free agent for carnival 2k8 I need a real band.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

islandspice I had my lashes done by alissa (though I took them out as they were giving me some problems) but how did I miss you? I think hubby got pics of girls in Jab Jab...can't recall any Dragon which is your section right..?

Tiffany the only person I saw in Fireman yesterday was wasp, I missed both you and caisoqueen!

anon, are you sure you were with Tribe? We crossed the Savannah stage at good time Monday.. dunno if you mean downtown but we missed dowtown on Monday. Tuesday was really no fault of the band, I mean how can the organizers put Tribe a large band behing Island People, another large band.steups! I dunno bout the vibes, to each his own, I had a great time! Met lots of cool people in my section, I play mas by myself since hubby was in Warrior Spirit :D

And what Crix yuh talking bout? There was Crix minis, dixie and tortilla on the snack truck, but surely that was not the only thing we got to eat! We had pizza and bake and shark later in the day and lunch was great both days.. man I got ice cream all in the mobile resting stations and security was bringing pizza for people lol.

quiksliver that band blocking thing is quite annoying! Man one thing I liked about Harts was after they crossed the stage they went their own route! Honestly masquerader's enjoyment far outweighs competing for Band of the Year and having to battle other bands for space.....the parade route needs to be rethought and revamped.

p.s. Tiffany tell your boy I said thanks for the generous compliment!

Allyuh I have to say- Carnival 2k7 was amazing!!!! I had an absolutely incredible experience. I'm very very happy with TRIBE and I'm definitely going to be playing with them next year.

Them Island People need to stop their bs though- damn band keep cutting us off!! STEUPS. I wanted to cuss but I'm glad TRIBE just took alternate routes whenever possible.

I have to say the security was very good, the food was good (though the snacks left something to be desired), bar staff was very efficient and all in all I got my money's worth!

I'm glad to see that my costume is included in your list Saucy- and I definitely agree with your assessment. I think Imp was by far the most gorgeous costume, definitely. I can't wait to see their offering for next year.

As for the assertion by some (though perhaps not on this blog) that Island People's costumes were superior- psssshhh.

I nearly forget- PERFORMANCES!!! I know not everyone would have been excited but having Mr. Vegas (and Iwer, Blazer, Biggie Irie, Peter Ram etc) perform really gave my carnival experience a little something extra. Thank you TRIBE!! Well done!

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah- TRIBE need to rethink some of their material for these costumes eh! My damn feathers ran all over my face when it rained on Tuesday. STEUPS. Good thing it dried and recovered, but I mean really. The dye stained my face till I got home to scrub it off. That really annoyed me.

Sauce you looked amazing in your costume!! Makeup was really fantastic! :-)

Steups...i just write one essay and blogger telling me some nonsense. Let me see if i remember what it was:

- I met triniqueen on tuesday in Imp

- I was not happy with all of my costume, but the issues i have i knew about before. I knew the costume was not red, i knew the corestte was more of a tube top. However i wasnot happy to have to make the amount of adjustments i made...i added extra loops, added elastic, changed the string to ribbon...and all day i had to adjust to make sure it looked right. What i learnt though was to make sure to scrutinize every little thing about any costume i might like because i was not happy feeling uncomfortable like that. Especially since other woman just walk out de house and leave the corsette jes so...oh geed ladies.

- My boots worked out very well for me. I know Saucy and my sister had some issues might be because of their heels but my flat boots were great and looked even better with the costume.

- Last but not least, the walk from south quay to stanmore was awful. The wait on St vincent street , worse. However I don't think it was Tribe's fault, nor do I know for sure if it was IP's fault so i ain't throwing no stones. I hope the ministry good and happy though. I heard there were 4 hr lapses on tv where no bands passed and not allowing Harts to cross when they reached is real shit especially since them people musse good work hard to reach on time to leave at 7am. Just screwing up a good ting.

- I wanted to say that after this year I would have liked to say that I might go to any band but i doh tink its worth the hype nah. I fear the band wars are about to get more ignorant after seeing and hearing some stuff from yesterday. and me and ignorance doh get along. Me and my $3000 does get along and it done hard for me to part with it. So i will go where I know the people trying hard. I not sure anywhere else trying that hard for my money.

Hello all - I had a time on Tuesday. I jumped up in the rain with all my glorious feathers. I brought my plastic bag to put my headpiece in but when the rain came down as we were crossing the stage and Warrior Spirit masquareders started chanting and bouncing to JUMBIE I said to hell with the rain and the feathers and leave it on your head :) as a matter of fact any puddle of water I could find had my name written on it - jump up in the water like the rain falling - :).

BTW Saucy, this is my first time being able to blog. I am still in TNT and I saw Caisoqueen at the port getting tickets for Tobago and she confirmed to me that you were playing in Fancy Sailor. I almost fall down and shoot myself in the foot b c when I saw you and your hubby I though it was u but I doubted myself b c I though that you were playing in Fireman...darn it...I looked for the green yarn on your wrist and nothing...darn...then I looked for u and your hubby's wedding bands - nothing...darn - yet I couldn't get it out of my head that this traditional Warrior Spirit was following a tradition masquarader around...when I down load my pics I will send u a pic of myself to see if u remember me staring at you a few times through out the day...after a while I had to stop staring b c I was afraid that u all might say something...LOL...I had on my green yarn but the silver bracelets was hiding the yarn...
btw u looked FANTASTIC...

On another note I had a few issues with TRIBE this year...I comment on them when I get back to the USA.

LOL! saucy gyul. i just logged n to your blog and scrolled down adn what a surprise to see my bumper in one of your pics, LOL! the very last pic, me on the left in the imp costume and another blogger in bat. not sure if you were refering to my boots but just in case, they were very comfy, i wore them last year for my wild samazi costume as well. i did end up throwing them away after carnival tuesday because i had too too much fun, the boots, i doubt could make another year. as for my friend/carnival road dog, i cannot remember her complaining at all about her boots so i assume they, too were comfy. i'm sure she can vouch for herself.

on another note, i met you in west mall and didn't even know it was you until after you walked off. my friend recgnized you and chatted with you (it was in the food court on carnival saturday) it was only after that she told me who you were. but anywho, i wanted to meet you to tell you thanks for all that you do on this blog. and thanks for the bumper shit cuz (and this is no lie) i kept wondering how it looked and wished i had one of my friends take a pic), LOL! but oh well...
