I found that Imp in our band looked the best. Island people costumes were really really pretty in person boy, even the jumbie section which I didn't like before
Some of my friends were talking about playing in Harts next year, but personally I wouldn't go for it. I mean the costumes are undeniably gorgeous- but the Carnival experience is so much more than that. Going back to a discussion we had on the blog some time before about race and band choice, Harts is, to put it bluntly and perhaps politically-incorrectly: too white.
There, I said it.
One thing I LOVED about my experience with TRIBE was that it was an opportunity to feel like for once I was just a part of the crowd. Some may disagree and tell me that I'm either putting too much stock in the race factor, or that I'm in denial and would actually fit in with Harts (but thaz talk for a next day and a next forum). However, I don't identify as a "fair-skinned" person, I identify as someone of mixed ethnicity who happened to take after her mother and come out fair (my sister is quite brown). There is a fundamental diff between the two self-views, which leads me to shun Harts as a potential band and stick with TRIBE.
Honestly, I'm not sure where this tangent came from. But there it is.
well you're not the only person to say that. To me Island People have my crowd, although Tribe is very similar but Tribe has the experience behind them. Harts is out of my equasion even though I've played with them before and is no scene when you're in it, and they're cheaper. But what is the use in having all these bands if we can't be fussy eh?
but where the hell are all the pics that people was snapping of me & hubby all day on Tues? I not seeing them anywhere :(
If I am not playing in TRIBE for 2008 it will be with Harts; I know they are regarded as the "white band" but I love the costumes and I have had only good times with them, never feeling out of place or a token "black girl" The band is actually more diverse than it seems on the surface.
I really do not focus on "colour", it's much more than that for me, though each of us has our own criteria when choosing a band. Hubby has had years with Harts and prefers Poison as his "perfect" band, I really like the all-inclusive vibe of TRIBE so for now that's my #1 choice.
When it comes to IP I personally have issues that go beyond skin colour that would keep me from playing with them. I am not going to state my reasons here because it is a purely PERSONAL choice and to everyone else who loves the band more power to them.
The great thing is there are many, many bands to choose from so we all have the power of CHOICE!
I love how many of the costumes ppl laughed at & thought were downright ugly looked so HOTT on the road & photographed so well, incl. pictured Pierrot Grenade & Le Soleil Brule.
saucy - check out your picture on nycaribbeanvibes.com
