Of Goody bags and Costumes

For all those wondering what I think of the Fireman costume, I have to say that it as nice as I expected. The waist band is hot and very skimpy and I am not really feeling the hat, it's nice but I think I still have that preference for a big headpiece deep down inside.

As for the goody bag, where are all the "goodies"? Now, I know I threw out the idea of a cell phone compliments sponsor Digicel in the earlies, thinking maybe the idea might resonate with the powers that be in TRIBE. Alas, no cell phone in the goody bag,and for all those who think it is too extravagant a "gift", let me just say I bought a wireless mouse at ETeck in San Juan as a Christmas present and paid $100.00TT. With that purchase I got a free motorla digicel phone! So, after spending $3000.00 on a costume the least one could expect was the same deal; a free phone!

Really the contents of the goody bag is as follows:

  • Promotional flyers/coupons (for Marios etc)
  • $10 discount voucher for sunblock,
  • A magazine,
  • TRIBE mirror
  • TRIBE key chain
  • Heineken key chain
  • TRIBE notebook
  • A mini bottle of Ocean Spray juice
  • A bottle of nail polish
  • A cup
  • A little pouch
  • A pencil/makeup case
  • Small pack of glitter
  • A Digicel flyer with cell phone and to get a $10 phone card when buying a phone

Honestly, maybe they should have just kept the whole goody bag and offer Monday wear instead!

To their credit customer service was excellent, a friend of mine needed her belt adjusted and her bra fixed since the size was too small. The staff at the adjustment centre went above and beyond to find her a bra that fit and she is quite pleased by their efforts. In addition another guy needed his hat re-sized and they took care of that as well. The entire collection process was quite professional and everything ran smoothly. The only complaint one could make is that they could have had some soca music (and maybe some free beers ) to get people in the mood, everyone was so serious and professional!

wait. they had an adjustment centre? where was this!?!

sauce.. how do you .. hook the backpiece up!!?

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

yup they HAVE an adjustment centre upstairs, yuh know where u bought tix for the launch? when you colllect the costumes, then u go for your id bands and meal bands, then you gooutside, there are some steps to the left, and you are basically in the hotel/conference centre proper. Ask someone to direct u if you not familiar.

You hook up the backpice with a string thingy that slips over each arm.

Anonymous said...

yep..that sounds about right.
ANd for those who are wondering if u could go back on another day for adjustments, sure you can.
If in doubt, call the hotline first.
Here are the numbers:
353 7978
353 7983

Sauce,

I tried to get my sister's boyfriend's pant switched out to a smaller size at the adjustment centre and they took my info. and told me they'd try to match me up with someone wanting a bigger size.

What is up with the goodie bag??!! I went through it on Saturday and it's the same old thing. They really could have tried just a little harder with it. The cup is better than the cups of old, but that's about it.

And you're right, Saturday when I went up there the place was relatively quiet, everything organized, soca playing in the background but not too loud. Everyone very professional. And NO LONG LINES!!! AMEN!

On a side note, all those Dame Lorraine males, the hat is not as it appears in the photos where it's a top hat, well in reality they've shortened it and it's more like a grandfather hat now.

but my strings weren't connected they just hung there. could you take a picture for me please?

no longer annon: thanks so much! do you think they can adjsut my belt size?

SexyEyes said...

hey all today is my day.... Jab Jab i'm coming....
i seriously cant wait i just hope that i don't have to work late cuz i now reach to work...
pressure with this diego traffic..
but its the same ole shit in goody bag???!!!come on TRIBE yal lapsing..

Anonymous said...

Yep..for sure they can AND will adjust your belt size for you.
They adjusted mine for me by adding more velcro strips so that I can make the belt smaller. My belt was waaaaaaaaay too big.
Is your belt too small or too big?
ANd what section are you in?...I suppose that will determine how easy it is to adjust the waistband.

Anonymous said...

no longer annon: really!?! cause I wanted to cry when I realised it was a bit close for me. It's fireman and it's to make the belt size bigger. like 2 or 3".

do I go directly to the adjustment area or something? They won't fuss or be annoyed?

Anonymous said...

Yes Tiffnay really!!!
When you go, tell the security that you are going to the adjustment centre. They will ask you if you know where it is; if not, they will direct you to it.

ANd no, I don't think they will be annoyed. Just go with the waistband and explain yuor problem; I am sure they would try to help you out and accomodate you as much as possible. Most likely as you want your waistband bigger, that is going to take some more work than just adding the extra velcro strips, because it will entail adding on more board as well as decorating it.
Call the hotline and explain your problem and they will direct you accordingly.

Trinigee you are right...they real lapse with that goodie bag...they should not have called that a goodie bag at all, and as far as I am concerned, should not have bothered giving us anything...that was almost insulting!!!

I doh understand why allyuh acting suprised. The goody bag was not any better last year. Last year it was the same rumour about "digicel phone" in the goody bag and we eh get last year either at the height of the mobile war.
What I vex about is that long time they used to give you a drawstring pouch that match your costume to put money in. Not that whack WYP pouch. Sigh I had get excited when saucy say money pouch, I thought they had brought back the drawstring. I guess I will be back in the cloth store today to make one myself.(Again!)

Anonymous said...

Jumbie, they do give you a tiny drawstring pouch...your nail polish is in it!!!..or should I say your mini bottle of OPI nailpolish!!!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Jumbie we surprised cause we eh paying the price we paid last year ;)

For the additonal dollars PLUS the additional BIG sponsor like Heineiken(sp) u would think they would throw in something a lil extra like a mini bottle ah sunblock or even some matching eyeshadow even a lil body jewel to match yuh costume....

Carnival Jumbie said...

buh wait nuh saucy, are my eyes deceiving me?Is that a silver drawstring pouch I see there in the pic that I missed before???Aye aye , we in business now!
I not suprised cause Tribe is about making their profit margin bigger. They giving yuh a goody bag so ppl will feel a little special and cool it.Just so they could say they get something.. It doh mean it have to be a GOOD goody bag. Last year I get a little deodorant. I agree they should have more samples..not a maxi pad self?

Anonymous said...

I didn't even get the blasted silver pouch! andddd worse yet? My nailpolish not even matching the costume. blaaaah!

no longer annon: thanks so much for the info. I really do appreciate it.

Heh heh heh, everyone on a STORM posting this morning!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Man and they say the goody bag will contain they Carnival "essentials" !!

It eh have have nothing in the bag that essential lol.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

did they give dispoable camera this year last year they gave out.

Anonymous said...

I don't know how to tell allyuh again nah...TRIBE give we d shitty end of d stick. We ain't get nothing of substance, and nothing essential. We aint get no TRIBE t-shirt, no DIGICEL phone, no HEINEKEN beer, no shades, no disposable camera, no pad, no condom no nothing.

If TRIBE continue on this trend, ans Island People buck up, and Pulse8 come good, TRTIBE go have real competition next year.
TRIBE needs to step up their game, especially to keep us loyal masqueraders happy. Or did they think giving us TLC cards, and allowing us to register before the masses was enough?

Anonymous said...

I was laughing at first til you all started listing off all the things we USED to get in the goody bag. Then i start to get vex...not a rag to wave horse? A little mulitbionta, some sunblock. Well IP win dis rounds.

SexyEyes said...

this is mess.... i mad to open my big mouth later and ask them what the hell they was thinking by not giving us anything good!!!
i mean they could've kept their keychains and the rest of their crap and give us some real stuff....
Damn you TRIBE the...

SAUCE, VERIFY AGAIN WHERE YOU GET THE MOUSE FOR 100?

Anonymous said...

Saucy I searched for any of your "carnival-past" posts whilst my girlfriends were complaining this mornin. I found a certain firewoman was very quiet after she wait so long for her costume. So our chat for today sounds like a children of the eighties commercial. "Remember when yuh used to get free soap, andrews, sunblock in a pack that can only cover yuh nose, stayfree samples, a flourescent money holder to put around yuh neck..."

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

lol@tantiejean, girl I have reason to be quiet ;)

anon I got the mouse at E Teck in San Juan. They always advertising in the papers; the mouse real cool and cheap, it is a wireless, digital mini mouse to use wid d laptop.

no longer anon even though I making noise over the goody bag, yuh have to say theg CUSTOMER service is great. I mean look how they fix up yuh costume for you; and in all honesty I would take the crappy goody bag as long as it comes with excellent customer service ;)

But still it would ah be nice to get a lil sunblock lol.

Anonymous said...

Yep..I will give them that...the customer service is EXCELLENT.

The thing is although I was not expecting much from the goodie bag, I was still disappointed by what I actually did get.

For me, if you advertise that you are giving a goodie bag with all of the carnival essentials, then you should give me the carnival essentials.
Carnival essentials for me include a rag to wave, sunblock to protect my skin, the mug (which I got) glitter (which we got) etc.

I do consider promotional keychains and note pads as "carnival essentials"...although these things are nice to have.

I don't think I am being unreasonable when I ask for a few of these basic things...like Monday wear for example.
If it is you (TRIBE) are insisting that masqueraders come out in part of your costume for uniformity and easy identification by the TRIBE security, then give me a t-shirt or something.

So, I will prefer to have GREAT servicec, but having a "nice" goodie bag would be appreciated...yuh hearing me TRIBE???!!!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

LOL I will agree on the Monday wear thing and he rules they want to enforce. I was quite willing to buy a TRIBE vest and was told none would be for sale :S

Anonymous said...

Saucy, I now saw your comment on the message board.
I know TRIBE couldn't have been making those kinds of statements (re: Monday wear).
Thanks for finding that out and clearing up this issue once and for all.

Anonymous said...

saucy, come over to the dark side, come over to island people, love ya!!!

Anonymous said...

well my gf and i collected our harts costumes today and i must say they were EXTREMELY organized. the people were very friendly and ready to asist with checking the costumes and explaining what goes where. my gf didn't have any problems with her costume fitting. PLUS they had people selling glitter, pouches, crystal tattoos etc. their official drinks cart is $500 (not bad - although i'm with a cheaper cart) and for the ladies, the "we-we truck" is $80...

and the goodies were not bad either - bandaids, panadol, bandages, deoderant, toothpaste, sports balm, andrews, a 3d port-of-spain route map, snacks and crime tips.

Anonymous said...

additionally, i passed by the island people distribution centre this afternoon on my way to collect my harts costume and i was quite disturbed by the long line on the pavement. what kind of crap is that? people would have paid 3000 plus for an IP costume and they had to join a long queue to collect their costumes???

harts was NOT like that at all.

Anonymous said...

no, it just shows that more people are playing mas with ip!!! lol!!
that is why the line is long!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Oh, so IP have their masqueraders standing up in hot sun to show how many people playing with them... makes sense LOL
