I have been meaning to express my thoughts on TRIBE’s model search, but last week was filled with so many other events like Zen nightclub closing and the Machel Montano allegations that there was no time to focus on anything else. Now that the storm has passed and Trinidad is back to relative normalcy I can reflect on the comments left by several persons via the blog and email concerning the hunt for models to present to us the costumes we will eventually have to choose from.
The choice of model is all part of parcel of the entire marketing and advertising of the costume for various Carnival bands. For instance, if the target group of revelers are young, sexy and of a certain social and economic bracket that is reflected in both pricing of the costumes as well as the choice of models. Just take a look at TRIBE and Island People with their models who all look like they are all from the same genetic gene pool with slim, youthful and aesthetically pleasing features. Compare that to Trini Revellers who use more mature models since their target group is a different market all together. Now nothing is wrong with using SOME models who fit the stereotype that has come to be associated with the top two “it” bands in Trinidad, I mean fashion designers do the same thing when they select super skinny waifs to model their clothes on the runway though the average sized woman is closer to a size 12 than a size 2! However I think when it comes to Carnival costumes unless the band employs strategies to ensure that the “larger” ladies do not get accommodated with a costume by say pre ordering bras for instance, then the average woman who plays with the band is not reflected in the choice of model leaving us with a less than ideal example of what the band would like US to look like!
What happens therefore is that we ladies with the curvy shapely bodies, hips, thighs and legs all looking distorted compared to the svelte 18 year old modeling the costume of our dreams then force ourselves to diet and exercise with the hopes of looking as they do in costume! Reality being that only the other svelte 18 year olds or those lucky few who remain “naturally slim” even as they age, will achieve anything close to the having prominent pelvic bones grazing the top on a super low waist band worn low low on hips.
From reading comments like these, which were sent via email I know that I am not the only one who thinks to herself that the models do not represent the majority of women who play with the band:

"I feel like I represent a mass majority of your masqueraders, so that these women can see what their costume will REALLY look like use ME!!!"
I wonder if they are looking for real women!!!! And not the "Sticks" that they have modeling the costumes!!!
That way we can get a true representation of what the average body will look like in costume, instead of females starving themselves to attain that false/misrepresented view of perfection!!!!
My pet peeve with the models are also that they seem to be the same girls making the rounds at band launches as well as posing on the website; does Trinidad not have other models besides the ones featured on TRIBE, Pulse 8, Island People and even Trevor Wallace? Of all the band launches I went to last year Dream Team was the only one with the majority of models who were not “popular” on the band launching circuit. Now someone left a comment on the article that I wrote stating that the choice of models goes beyond size and race also factors heavily into it. The point being that TRIBE is a major offender in having light skinned curly haired models with the token black model thrown in to appease those that have called them racist before. Now, I do not believe that this viewpoint is true, having seen the same models used by TRIBE model for other bands. However I am not denying that there are models chosen who do have the light skinned /curly haired look and I think that has more to do with the mentality in Trinidad that if you are not “red you dead”.
The only band that features plus sized and regular models is Trini Revellers, and I have to commend D Krewe who used a lovely larger model along with their “smaller” girls to display their costumes at Trini Revellers launch. They even went a step further to offer a Plus Sized version of the costume on their website, therefore giving the women interested in this option an idea of how the costume would look on their bodies, The other pet peeve I have with costume modeling on the website is that the bands offer whole piece and taninki suits yet there is no example of what it looks like on a model…anywhere on the website!
So, in conclusion to this surprisingly lengthy rant is that I wish the hot bands would use models that more represent the masqueraders who play with them. That way when we work out or diet to fit into our costume it is because we want to be healthy, toned and fit with lots of stamina for Carnival and not because we want to look like the super skinny model who sold the costume to us lock stock and barrel. How many women buy the costume with the thought in their head that they too would look like the model on Carnival day, impossibly thinking they can starve themselves to 90 pounds only to end up choosing a costume that is all wrong for their body type!? All models do not have to be skinny; I mean we would not want the slim girls to feel like we have something against them but is it so wrong to use a model with some meat on her bones as well? D Krewe had a really great idea of using models that reflect all types of women and I do wish that one of the “hot” bands takes the initiative and shatters a long perpetuated model stereotype for 2008 and use some stellar models with REAL curves.

Saucy I totally agree with you, sometimes i ask myself what is carnival comming too, because it seems as though some of these bands only want the slim and trim compare to years gone by when size was not an issue
Saucy i agree with you, but one of the reason they do not give the plus size the chance to model there costume is because they are looking for a certain type and size to play in there band, I had that experience with island people last year, where they had there costume pre order to the size they want
good article, saucy! interesting point anon 6:44. i've heard that complaint and at one point while watching the replay and seeing the pics to Tribe and Island People in 06, it looked so, but the reality is that there were indeed browner, rounder and less fine and curly haired revellers abound in both those bands on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. So if it is indeed their intentions, they are failing miserably.
Personally, I'm all about toned bodies which does not have to be stick thin as I've seen many a strong toned larger women in my day with fab attainable abs and strong bodies. I understand that the fashion world prefers thinner representation of their designs, but it's just not realistic, nor fair to the people who fatten their pockets to just totally ignore them (us).
My beauty ideal is of curvier, big bottomed, toned woman with strong calves, rocking abs, round but muscular shoulders, back and legs.
I'm thinking more like Destra (on she good days), Allison Hinds (in she hey day), Beyonce, JLo, and Janet (who's bikini body is posted in my home office wall much to the chagrin of my husband and wonderment of any guest who happens by the room in our house. LOL)
Hey, I got to keep the eye on the prize. LOL!!
I say the beautiful thing about Trinidad and the African Diaspora as an entity is that within it you will find women representing a spectrum of colors, sizes, nationalitys, ethnicities, etc. I think it would be a great thing if the powers that be would acknowledge that and let the models they hire reflect it
As a bigger girl and newbie I searched and searched the internet for Carnival 2006 pics of healthier women rocking costumes so that I could get an idea of fit and what the one piece and tankini would look like prior to ordering. Let's just say that I did not find very many representations, as it seems that the websites focused more on the ideal women in their pics than on the real women.
A side note - One piece + bathroom +big mistake, tankini (or bikini) from now on!
what about male models? nobody want to see a big belly man modeling a costume!
LMAO!!!
babygirl001 you jokey yes!!!
but on a real, sorry fellas, i doh want to see no big belly man on no website.
lol....
i see your point Saucy.
I also think it matters who applies to be a costume model...and what people want to see.
i defintely think that the models do not reflect the majority of the masqueraders, and a better mix of models should really be used.
Saucy, I'm with you and Amina 100%. T&T is a rainbow country with so many beautiful women, why do we get treated to the same fare year after year?
One of the reasons we see the same chicks modelling everybody's costumes are that they ARE indeed models and several bands hire the same agency when they need models for their launches, photo shoots etc. I have a friend who is a male model and he was in EVERY bandlaunch (not to mention a calendar or two; but I eh go lie, brother does look GOOD!)
Since there's no market for plus-size models or anything other than the standard, boring, reed thin, 6 ft tall and no older than 24 model fare, that's all we gonna see UNLESS people like Tribe make this bold step by doing a model search with a view to more accurately representing the diversity that is the band membership.
Hell, if my stomach was flatter and my legs more toned I would've signed up. (Doh worry, ah workin' on it)
Kudos to Tribe!
Are there any plus size (read: regular size) models in T'dad?
Bc bands can't hire them if they don't apply.
They would certainly represent the reality of the average Carni masquerader.
Hi Karabana, I think both you and I and everyone else know there are all shapes and forms in TNT. But the "topshottahypahotta" bands will not utilize such models due to the main reason being aesthetics. I don't believe the designers of the sections of these particular bands want out of shape or plus sized or even more realistic looking models in appearance showcasing their wares. Why? Because to them, Carnival is about FANTASY and selling a more desirable, although not-attainable-to-all IMAGE. I for one, can understand their standpoint. I wouldn't WANT to click on IP's or TRIBE's website and witness mampie-vision.com. Perhaps it's because I've ever really had a weight issue, Carni is all about toning and stamina for me. I never ever expect to look like the model, I always tweak the mas to suit myself. It's fairly comparable to high fashion couturiers who want that size 0 parading their artistry in front of the world. Technically, the size 0's should allow for the outfits to hang off of their bodies as clothes would on a hanger. Therefore, when a model struts down a runway, all eyes should hone in on the garments and nothing else. I personally would not enjoy seeing Mo'Nique (who IS lovely) sashaying down the runway in Roberto Cavalli's tiniest & latest....But dais just me, so shoot meh eh?
With this being said, I agree with the folks who mentioned having photographs with ALL of the costume options and NOT just the skimpiest ones. I think this is an excellent idea. In terms of what's being said about TRIBE, I think that they could display a bit more diversity in the ethnicities of their models. For the most part, I agree that the models look primarily like most (not ALL) of their band. They have taken the right step in increasing this diversity over the years. In a land like TNT, diversity is certainly not a mission impossible! The model search is definitely a step in the right direction; Kathryn and the Cabral girls do look great but some new faces can't hurt at all!
I saw a gorgeous big girl in Pulse 8 this year wearing a bikini doing her jumbie dance all toned and taut. She looked fabulous! It's the ones who ain't that wanna wear strapless and ah piece ah tong in tong who I have a problem with...Helen Keller!
Sorry so long, but allyuh know if TRIBE's accepting moggels from de pension crew? :o
Monique is fab, I could definitely see her strutting her stuff down a runway in a costume with some firece heels to match looking outta this world gorgeous, albeit not a skimpy costume, but one more suited, such as a variation of the Dame Lorraine (spelling??), the Tribe costume with the white skirt, top and straw hat.
Dolli thing is we are not even asking for PLUS sized models, just regular looking models. Regular meaning the sexy trini women that we boast so much about, not saying that some of the RAIL THIN Models are not "sexy" in their own right but I see some girls in the TRIBE magazine that look MUCH better than the girls on the website.
Check out the chicks on facebook, the group Myths and Magic and you will see some fab looking "normal" girls.D Krewe using a plus sized model is a huge depature from the "norm" and I know full well that the reason the skinny models are chosen in fashion is because they supposedly fit the clothes better, much like putting the clothes on a hanger. But to be fair to couture some of those designs will just not look good on a size 14, it's really all about knowing what works with your body type as well.
But when it comes to costumes there are girls who can model the costume and look great and not have the hip bone poking out.. or be so skinny they basically look like a figure 1!! How many "regular" females who played in Fireman got a "shock" when they realised the waist band did NOT cover most of their behind like it did on the model because, and sorry to say this bout the girl cause she is nice, she is THIN with NO BUTT.To model Carnival costumes marketed to Trini women you can't use Kate Moss...yuh will have to find a Beyonce! LOL I want to see the costume on a woman with CURVES... like in the days of Poison :D
I sorry eh allyuh getting ready to trip me with this one. I red, I have curly hair and I am a professionally trained runway model, a curvy Size 2 yet TRIBE did not select me last year as one of their models.Of course that had more to do with bobol than anything else (but thats a post for another time).
At the end of the day TRIBE is a business not a ppl pleaser, models are part of their MARKETING. So they are going to go with the modelling industry norm and have skinny bitches.Skinny bitches have also become the stereotype of what is the ideal body image so that is what they will promote. You needbto remember Calvin French is the photo director for their shoots and he ONLY deals in high fashion shoots which means ONLY skinny girls. I was watching ModelsNYC on MSNBC and was shocked when they tell a skinny bitch that her hips were too big at 37" she had to get down to 34" (now i know why I not a super model at 38")but thats the HIGH fashion standard. When you watch their pics you are imagining yourself in the idealistic image they portray. That is the image you work towards when you beating out the gym to fit in the costume.
Honestly ppl if we could all get down to the size we see in all the magazines with no effort how many people would CHOOSE to be overweight?
But Jumbie isn't the nature of a business that provides a service such as they do, depends on pleasing people for their sucess? And when you are marketing your product do you not choose the type of Advertising that captures your target audience? Hence are they only expecting rail thin women to play with the band or is it that they are not aware of how many "normal" sized people register to play mas every year? We are talking normal sized, regular women here eh, not even touching the subject of the plus sized ladies.
I think we all have come to accept that it is the norm to have skinny models wheter in magazines, advertisements or in the case of certain bands models wearing the costumes. But just because it is the "norm" don't mean that we cannot have a say.
To answer your questions I have NO desire to become a size 0, which is the new aspiration for the super slim celebs and models. I always tell people I like my breasts, I like my hips I like my legs.. I liked when I was 15 pounds lighter and that would be MY ideal weight which is nothing close to what is in the magazines. I am grossly overwight compared to THOSE standards but they are not my standards. If I could loose 15 pounds effortlessly sure, I would love to but even now I do not consider myself to be overweight. I am still within the "normal" weight for my height as well as I have am at my "normal" BMI.
Saucy, did the "Fireman" ladies really get a shock? LOL! I didn't know about all that. In person, I thought the Fireman belt looked rather generous coverage wise with the tassels dropping down and ting. :o
I understand what allyuh are saying, but REGULAR is not the fantasy that some of these bands want to sell. Do I agree? Not necessarily, but just don't shoot and launch the target and then have it land at busted for the sake of inclusion. As for those Poison Divaswithacapital"D", I liked the models that were used. They were very feminine and sexy. I thought Darlene had the sickest physique by far, but Celisse Pierre was most definitely my favorite. As we all can recall, Poison was a band made up of ah gazillion individual sections anyway so those models were all different types for sure!
IMHO I don't believe TNT ladies resemble Beyonce, she's much too curvy. The tough, ubersexy TNT ladies that I know tend to favor Beyonce, but only perhaps after her Master Cleanse diet. Many TNT ladies tend to fit the model-type appearance more succinctly than those who are abroad!
Speaking of the TRIBE Souvie Mag, I remember 2k4 in the Jungle Fever section when the ladies on de road looked more scintillating than the models on Islandevents' website. They were SERIOUS model material!
Any woman who has borne children, and/or is of a certain age, eats freely, and who is sedentary should have their head WELL and EXAMINED thoroughly if they think they all can resemble a childless 18 yr old with a year-round modeling coach/agent and a personal trainer by Carnival time. Expectations such as those are much too unrealistic. Carnival Jumbie, I agree with all that you mentioned for sure: "At the end of the day TRIBE is a business not a ppl pleaser, models are part of their MARKETING." But you sound as if you had the "right stuff", why do you feel you weren't selected?
I guess we have no choice to wait and see what they do! ;)
And ah I guess dem not accepting "pensioners"..I've gotta give meh fren Big Auntie ah let dong..LOL.
hey saucy. i was wondering whether or not this has not come to your attention. i was thinking about that some time aback. and as a slim gyal, and witnessing the big-women-not-taking-this-shit-anymore-movement headed by mo'nique et al, i think that there should feature plus size models. not 1 or 2 women popping out in each band, but HALF and in a 2 PIECE as well.
so if i was organizing a band, this is what i would want.
BIG GIRLS: yes
"TIRES": AH HELL NO!!!!!!
no offense to y'all. but i think it's that the bands think when they think of big women, together with cellulite, stretch marks, etc. now im not saying that the slim girl doesn't have those. i know there's some fit nice curaveous women without tires and cellulites!! and they're still big!
and a second thing. while i looked at the road pics of ip on their website, i noticed that EVERY pic were slims girls once again. are the photographers now discriminating and excluding the big women?? i then got the perception that most women in trinidad were slim and everyone's been rushing to the gyms 6 months in advanced just to get that 'look' and then reality set in (duh yannick!)
now in other islands, i know in anu, bds, and slu have women of ALL shapes just as equally, modelling for carnival bands. i no they were some extra meat in power x 4 in bds, and xs energy in slu. and in a 2 piece too!!!!
now for dem models, all i got to say that there was this gyal modeling the fireman section in tribe and the belt was a lil too loose on her. now that was disappititing to watch! and them mutts island people and tribe keep advertising, is a lil of a itimidation. it just triggers ur memory to when u wish u had 'nice' hair and u wish u had fair skin or at least 2 shades lighter.
peoples, mix it up!!!! and lastly, im sure these models for carnival are not starving themselves, so there's no way to be bashing them like that peoples, come on now. well if u here othawise, well.....
plz ppl, don't take offence as to what i say, cause it's one of the truth, and since this message board seems to have thick to curvaceous women. nuff respect to y'all
Nicky
Well if it's in fact the case that regular size pro models are applying & not getting accepted into the top bands, then yes, it's a case of bands jumping on the ridiculous thin-is-in bandwagon & trying to represent to the world an untrue image of the average masquerader.
(Bc like I said, regular size=the average masquerader.)
Darlene is my very good friend,a size 0 at the moment but she does have hips of 37 inches so she is not considered skinny LOL. When we were in high school her waist was 21 and 1/2 half inches (now it is 23 inches). She models costumes and looks fab.
Dolli Celisse is an excellent example of a model who is NOT skinny but is sexy with curves and photographs well. She is tall too and carries her size well.
anon you raised some good points, I too have to wonder when looking at Carnival pics of some bands if only skinny women played with them.. but that is ANOTHER topic altogether!
Please define nice hair and them mutts. Why should we all be intimidatied? this is slavery mentality.
trini is gold standard for carnival in windies so best bands will have gold standard women for models!
"Well if it's in fact the case that regular size pro models are applying & not getting accepted into the top bands"
Yes, Kara this is what I believe is really going on. It is a pure image and marketing tactic. I mean look at Carnival Jumbie's story..And she models! Some of these bands won't even allow certain people into certain SECTIONS...Remember what folks posted during the year about their registration experiences? Pre-sized mas costumes instead of custom made? Picking people of a certain "look" but denying their girlfriends a similar opportunity? Not too kool at all.
Yes, Wasac2k7V, I think Mo' would look great in that costume.
Sauce, I just TOO LOVE Celisse and the fact that she is quite tall and doesn't appear anorexic. She is simply breathtaking in every aspect of the word! And she is an absolute "Dolli", LOL. What a beauty she is, inside and out! I missed her this year with TRIBE. I wonder what happened, as I didn't see her modeling for 2k7 at all.
it's not just trini... all over the caribbean it's pure skinny girls with brown skin and long curly hair who are modelling costumes.
so anon you saying that a curvy woman is not gold standard? Ask any Trini man to choose between Jennifer Lopez and Keira Knightley and see who he will choose. Our standards of beauty in the Caribbean, last time I checked, was diff. from the American ideal. Women with curves are appreciated here and what other countries call fat (with disdain) is pretty normal in the Caribbean. The funny thing is growing up the skinny girls were the ones who were heckled (my cousin used to get called magga and dry up every day) so when did the tide turn? :S
As for the comment on the hair, though I do not agree with anon on being intimdated I can see her point. If you were raised with people talking about good hair and red women being so nice and being called "blacky tacky" making you as a child feel something was wrong with your hair that did not bounce when you walk or your skin that was a chocolate colour you DO grow up with issues. Yes, it is a slavery mentality but it has been perpetuated in WI culture from as long as I can remember!
Everyone always likes to lists all the other races they mixed with (though they look "black" by the outside world standards) and some get a rude awakening when they leave Trini and no one cares that they mom is half Spanish or their grandfather was portuguese and call then black to their face.
Anyway the point is I have a friend who will never play with TRIBE because she sees them as the "red" band and the conotation behind it. She does not care that lots of diff. types of people play with TRIBE as far as she is concerned she does not want to be around the girls she cant stand i.e. the red chicks with the convent accent (her words not mine!!!) No matter how much I tell her it isn't so she stands by it and yes it has a little to do with "intimidation" which stems from the days when she was going to Junior Sec and "them convent" girls felt they were better than everyone else, according to her.....:S
I hope this BUSTS THIS $HIT OPEN then, the "it" bands should be taking note, if they're NOT properly representing the average Trini woman & instead going with skinny preteen models, should loyal masqueraders not tell them to get with reality?!
*sigh* ... but why should this be any different?, it's much more popular to keep up the lies (myth & magic)...
unfortunately the new size over here in the states is 00, not just zero. Trinis tend to want to be followers and when they look at a
fashion magazine, they want to be just like dat!!!
I like this line Kara, LOL:
"it's much more popular to keep up the lies (myth & magic)"...
Saucy, they used to call people chirren "blacky tacky"? :o I swear I've never heard that one! I know I used to get heckled by West Indians growing up for being "dry". Of for being an honorary member of de F.B.I. And I born and grow right up here in de U.S.of flicking A. I could never understand the island obsession with plumpness or body coverage. Then again, I still don't understand America's worshipful behavior toward sharply delineated clavicles, blue eyes, blond hair and ALL that is Nordic & Abercrombie & Fitch. Ah well, that's another post....
I sure do get kix off of some of "those Trinidadians" who have used their positions in the TNT hierarchy to look down on others and then arrive in America to learn that they ARE considered colored and black and that good black doh crack! LOL.
But all over the Caribbean it is NOT just one type modeling. I've seen the Bajans do great presentations with darker, more meaty(LOL) girls who rep the costumes quite well. I don't think the types of models will change in the TNT hot bands though. No matter how many complain!
That's shameful about your friend to be scarred like that Sauce. Who does she play with?
Posh Spice/Victoria Beckham I do not aspire to be though I love her new haircut!
It's so funny that you guys talk about 'good hair' and 'red girls' etc, as I am light (very light, lol) 'skinned' and I have been dealing with this my entire life. People assuming that I am stuck up and thinking I'm better b/c of my hair and complexion, when all the while I used to wish that I was browner, lol. Baking myself in the sun attempting to get a tan when in the end, guess what, I still wasn't a browny no matter how hard I tried, lol!
During carnival a guy told me that big bottom girls like me were well respected in TnT and I know that's the thinking in most other carib islands and Africa, etc. as well, so what's up with only the skinny girls be represented. Nothing against them, I love people for who they are not how they are, but are we being bamboozzled?
Nature of the business. Just like sex sell, beauty sells. It's what more pleasing to the eye. In their case they think that using the skinny models is what we trini's want to see.
Hopefully they peek over on your blog and the word get's out, the majority of us would like to see varitey, spice it up. Use more colors this time around try on differen sizes.
so anon @ 3:15,
you implying that the 'gold standard' women must be mixed and is more valuable than a straight black, st8 white, or str8 coolie gyal?
Saucy nah man, you notice I did not say who want to be a size ZERO , i said who would choose to be OVERWEIGHT. I choose my words carefully for exactly the reason you stated with the BMI. If I really wanted to be a super model I COULD get down to that size but I too would not want too, again for the same reason as you, I LIKE my big bumcee.
My point was that they took a marketing decision to promote the band using a'high fashion look' strategy. If you notice the girls in the pics have more 'model' measurements than the runway models. I think they use the professional polished look of their pics to draw people in and then their service/package does the rest. Their press campaign really put no thought into who really buys their costumes and for that I would agree their marketing is flawed.
It doh make sense talking about why I did not get picked cause it have nothing to do with how I look. But I have two friends who screened who are both size 0 and cute (one being red with curly hair lol) and they also were not picked.I thought it could only be because they were a bit short. I was actually shocked when I saw those who were. I expected to see only 6ft, 100 lb stunners. Some other friends who I have modelled with and not red with curly hair but well trained also were not picked. I cannot tell you with certainty what were their rationale for picking. But my feeling is that is a more who yuh know and if French like yuh than anything else.I can't say anybody was really 'discovered'
Saucy I have actually modeled for Darlene as well a few times and from experience most people go with who they could get to do it that are attractive. She never ask me what my measurements are other than my bra size. TRIBE and IP are more picky for sure.Again from experience, I can tell from the moment I walk in a screening if I am getting the job or not. Why? Cause when I see the judges are ppl who I know for a fact don't like me then I know I am not getting the job. When its someone I've worked with before I'm inside.
Dolli my friend played with Poison, actually I had her pic on the blog one time showing off her braids. Now she supports Island People.
Jumbie you have me re-reading your comment; you did not say size 0 but you did say:
Honestly ppl if we could all get down to the size we see in all the magazines with no effort how many people would CHOOSE to be overweight?
The size I see in the magazines is a size 0, hence why I used that in reference to your comment. In no way I meant you stated that figure and I hope that clears up me taking your words and giving them my own meaning.
I actually spoke to Darlene about her criteria for choosing models and she said she looks for girls who are "sexy" not skinny and who photographed well.
If it is one thing your experience of not being picked has clarified is that it REALLY has nothing to do with colour or how straight/curly your hair is as was implied in a comment left on the post I did about the model search basically calling TRIBE racist.
Yuh know what is funny though, Harts models are really a true representation of the band.. the women are fit and toned much like the majority of Harts' chicks and since the band is 80% of lighter skin tone their models reflect that as well.
lol true about Harts but with their skin tone but they also have big ladies as well that are not represented.
saucy, doh lie, you could never get to be "model size" tell the truth nah!!
The trolls are out ..LMAO.
