TABOO speaks!

The bandleader for TABOO,one of the many new bands to debut for Carnival 2008, left this message in the comments of the post entitled "TABOO....The Band":

I have just come across this blog. I am the TABOO BANDLEADER. I am glad to hear all of you who are interested in the band and the theme.

Firstly, I am a child of the 80's and I must admit that the 80's was tacky, but you must admit we had fun in your tackiness. We just decided that it was time that the vision of Carnival evolved, bringing something new and fresh to the smorgasbord.
The costumes are symbols of 80's pop culture, translated through our Carnival costuming.

Some of the Sections include:
MOONWALKER
PURPLE RAIN
THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO
VOGUE
PRETTY IN PINK
MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE
Now we also highlighted the local 80's scene with:
SOCA BAPTIST (roadmarch of 1980)
CARNIVAL IS COLOUR(tribute to Minshall's band of 1987)
and also we have a section based on the World Cup efforts of the strike squad in 1989.

I am an experienced designer firstly, and the chances are, that you have already played in a costumed that I had either designed, produced, or assisted on already.
I have worked with ALL the major bands(and some of the smaller ones) in T&T. I have also worked in Caribana, Crop Over, carnival in DC & Cuba and also in Sao Paulo & Rio (BRAZIL). I am also an assistant designer at Calvin Klein New York.

I am willing to answer any questions that concerning TABOO, or the presentation that you may have.

ADDAE
First of all it is quite a pleasure to have a Band Leader actually visiting this blog and talking back; I really appreciate the comment that you left ADDAE and decided to share it with everyone who visits the blog.

My questions for ADDAE of TABOO are

1. Is the band going to take the "traditional" route with costuming in bikini and beads or will it be more Avant Garde, say a nod to Minshall and Mc Farlane?

2. When is the band launching?

3.Who are the other persons involved in TABOO ?

4. Why should a masquerader chose to play with a new band such as TABOO over more established veterans in the business?

ADDAE I do hope you will return to answer my questions and I also invite other persons who may have questions of their own to leave a comment with their query as well.

purple rain!

i'd love to put on an ascot, some thigh high Apollonia 6 boots and a Purple Prince jacket. I heart Prince! "when dove's cry is my favorite song off that soundtack."

this should be interesting to say the least!...

(1)Will the band be an all-inclusive or will their be an option like Harts?

(2) What is the average floor member costume price?

That's all for now.

I'm feeling that Purple Rain costume myself. I <3 Prince too!

It's great to see a bandleader/Designer respond to this blog. Really cool! I look forward to Addae's answers.

WOW! I have been hearing about this band, it sounds really interesting.
I already know that I want to be a part of the band, but I'd like to know if you have launched yet, if not when can we expect it. Do you have pre-registration and group packages available???

The theme sounds like a lot of fun. You can really get colorful with the 80s. Best of luck to this new band!

Thank you for all your comments, and thank you SAUCYDIVA for the opportunity to forum our ideas.

Firstly in terms of costuming, I find it interesting how you refer bikini and beads as “traditional”. I have to speak both as an artist and a fashion designer; also as a bandleader and a masquerader.
As an artist I see the beaded fru-fru as cheap, but as a designer I have to acknowledge it as a commercially viable product. Then as a bandleader, producing such a band make me feel almost embarrassed, but as a masquerader and someone who grew up seeing scantily clad people on the streets, I do have an appreciation for it.
I am not Minshall, nor can I imitate him successfully without making a fool of myself. But I am an artist nonetheless and I see pop culture, and pop art just as important as what the McFarlanes and Minshalls do.
I can safely say without giving away too much, that yes defiantly our costumes are avant-garde, but we’d be using the materials that are a little more modern; but above all we are going to hold true to the theme and do the decade justice!

Our band will be launching in August, following the media launch and official opening of the mas camp in July.

Along with myself I have two other very strong designers in my corner Jay Spencer, been a strong force in the local carnival scene for years, and also Darcelle Cudjoe, and artist who is relative newcomer to carnival but just as invaluable.
We also utilize the talents of Geraldo Vera Sr. -2006 King of Carnival; and also a couple of the artisans and visionary directors from the Minshall camp. Other affiliations I am a little hesitant to acknowledge (I’m sure that you are familiar with the secrecy of Carnival).

So why TABOO? Why now?
Hmmm interesting, the question that you posed echoed something a sponsor or banker would ask.
So I would leave you with the TABOO Mission Statement.

Taboo is the FUTURE of Carnival!
It is the forbidden, unspoken evolution of the artistic intensity of expressions made by the culture and people of Trinidad and Tobago. The focus of this authority’s work is to utilize the undeniable potency of the youthful prowess: the skill of the “masters of the art”: and the wisdom of the gurus of the big-stage: and cultivate a festival appreciation, au courant. Aesthetically employing the rituals of power, the eccentricity of movement and the strength of masking from a high pedigree of our nation’s diverse ancestral revelry: Taboo is not building a bridge into the future by our unique parading – Taboo is the bridge!

Taboo is the alternative to the mundane: the preference for the select that desire, expect, and demand more. It’s for the leaders of a new generation, who crave definition and who seek uniqueness. It’s for those who want to move poetically across through the uninspiring humdrum of which the Carnival parade is becoming.

ANSWERS TO THE BLOGGERS’ QUESTIONS

Socaholic - The band had originally decided to make it’s all-inclusive, for comfort of the masquerader, and to be honest the sponsors also. We are still throwing around the idea to have it be a special offer for the masqueraders that they specifically request. But all costumes do include meals and catered snacks throughout both days.
We will not have costumes exceeding $2000, our prices are very competitive for the package (unofficially $1200-$1800). Imagine “front-line” quality (elaborate of costume) with the regular floor prices.
And I strongly feel, after I fully convince my executive, that the all-inclusive privilege would be our gift to the masquerader it being our maiden year

Mizz m- To be honest we actually have foreigners already purchasing our costumes (before they even saw it). I think that they just “felt” our vibe, and wanted to be a part of it.
