Poison UK

Though Poison Trinidad is now defunct the name lives in London under the banner Poison UK and they will be making at appearance at Notthinghill Carnival with three costumes from Pulse 8 (Sex on The Beach, Sapphire Ice and Mai Tai) available to masqueraders for the choosing. The website also states that the headline section "Rezzarek" would be designed my Peter Minshall, and that I am very interested in seeing. Somehow Peter Minshall's mas alongside Pulse 8 costumes is a concept that I cannot fathom as they are two different genres of mas. I guess it is a totalitarian concept at Nottinghill this year. For more information and to see the costume themselves have a look at the official Poison UK website. For those of you on Facebook you see photos of the launch in the group "Who Playing Mas for Nottinghill?".

Well, this Minshall ting has excited my interest. If the designs are worthy in my eyes, I may just make a trip to London to see Nothinghill Carnival this year. No kidding, Saturday evening I imagined what Minshall (or anyone with accessible, not too abstract, allegorical vision) could really do with bikini mas. The idea came to me as I read the fair criticism on this blog about Barbados Baje's Lost Tribe. Not everytime there has to be "message" in the mas, and Minshall's past parody of bikini mas was too skeptical. It would be nice indeed if he would simply just embrace the beauty of beads, feathers, and the colors of our skins and make something quite new (and not just only for the ladies).

I for one am getting just a tad worried that all the mas designs for the Trini style carnivals around the world are too formulaic and repetitive at this juncture (to be fair Minshall has been repeating himself, also. He has to think outside the box again, because no one has stepped up to carry his past innovations forward.

masquerade2k, the callaloo section sounds fantastic. This should give people a reason to keep their costumes for a second life in another parade (all of mine from Trinidad are in boxes in storage, and one headpiece on display in my living room). Brooklyn Labor Day on the Parkway, one or two bands tried this several times (expanding the concept to any costume from any band is a better idea than limiting it to just one particular band), but it never really ketch on, as yet.

I think their funding is limited as with all UK mas (arts council and only limited masquerader numbers), so minshall and full crew sounds like a tall order to me; but would be more than interesting to see Minshall do something with mas on the streets here, after all Notting Hill is where he first started designing for Carnival.

Far as I heard it wasn't the whole band Minshall was runoured to be doing, tho, just a section. we shall see . . .

To put the record straight. Four Mas Bands - Paddington Arts ELIMU, Poison UK, Dragons and The Lighthouse Players - together with the London College of Fashion, The Victoria & Albert Museum, Kingston Upon Thames Carnival and The Thames Festival have commissioned Minshall to design, make and stage a Mas Production at a number of events and venues in London from August to September 2007. This is year one of a four year project leading up to the 2012 Olympics when we hope that Mas will be given some exposure to be represented at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics. There will be 2000 Mas players at the highlight of the event in Hyde Park on Carnival Sunday. Then each of the four bands will diplay their Mas on Carnival Monday on the streets of Notting Hill.

It is a challenging and exciting project that was planned since 2005 when the Arts Council gave a R&D grant to plan this event. This is the fruits of this planning. If it happens, it will be something to behold as Minshall when he visited London two weeks ago to meet the Mas Bands excited us all with his ideas and plans.
