Ask Wyatt.....

Since Wyatt Gallery, one of the members of Island People Mas has "outed" me and has now joined in the little blog community I have decided to create a space where you guys can ask him all the questions you might have about Island People Mas or even offer a suggestion or two.

Wyatt, I prefer to be incognito since I do not want any familiarity to prejudice what I have to say; you should know from the forum of old that I tend to speak my mind so that is not going to change. However, I will try my best to temper the sometimes caustic comments with some constructive criticism as I would very much like your supporters to have an excellent time with Island People. Though the band versus band war is at times crazy with the respective supporters hurling piccong, insults et al I am sure that at the end of the day what we all want is value for our money, since the costume is not cheap,to get what was advertised and enjoy our Carnival to the fullest!

So, my first suggestion would be that last year I had a difficult time trying to register a young Lady in Jewel of the Nile because costume viewing was taking place simultaneously. Hopefully this year a procedure can be implemented where costume viewing takes place a few days before registration and then when registration starts it will be the only focus at the mas camp. Also you need several computer stations for registration so that the crowd or people waiting can be processed quickly. My main gripe was seeing that long line snaking around stone street and the "bouncers" letting in two people at a time to take their leisurely time looking at costumes before registration.

All the other comments/questions on service I will leave to your masqueraders as they told me I did not play with Island People therefore I cannot comment from a "first hand" point of view. To them, and any one else who wants to leave a comment, be nice since I think Wyatt is doing some excellent P.R. by coming to the blog and being very patient with your questions. Like Dolli, I am impressed!

EDITED TO ADD:

Before this space gets swamped with too many questions, my suggestion is that comments/suggestions be left HERE (under the comments section) and any questions you have for Wyatt be sent to : photos@wyattgallery.com

Thank you Saucy for allowing me to be a part of your blog. It is very sweet of you. I think your blog is extremely informative and can be very helpful to masqueraders.

Since some of the questions might deal with what i stated in the other comments i thought i'd start off by posting it here too for those who might not see it there....

response to Last Year:
I can tell you that I (along with the other creators of Island People Mas) was so pained and hurt by the poor security we had last year, as well as the distribution process. We had training days and all in advance to prepare our security for last year and they really let us down. Sometimes masqueraders think because certain aspects of our production were not up to par that we don't care about allyuh, but that's not true at all. We were all saddened and disappointed by the distribution process and the security last year. And honestly, we all really really want to please every single masquerader.

This year our main focus is to improve our customer service in every aspect, to improve distribution, and to improve security. I think everyone can agree our costumes are hot, our DJ’s are hot, and we have A LOT of fun on the road. So we focusing on the things that we didn’t do as well. And we have already changed a lot of these problems. We have hired a new team to manage registration, production, and distribution. As well we have created a new software to use for registration. So I am not promising you we “are going to do this and that”, I’m telling you we already have done it and if you play mas with us this year we will prove it to you. We not making joke this year. We getting it right this year 100%!!! To the extent that saucy will say, “Damn boy, IP did it right this year for real jed!” ☺ lol

Yes we read all the blogs and forums because we want to provide you with the carnival experience that you want. It does hurt our feelings sometimes to read extremely negative comments. But in the long run I guess we need to hear those things in order make sure we work hard to treat you with a wonderful carnival experience. So we doing our research ;)

We will send out an official email with concrete info on these changes if you wish. I don’t want to give out details before the time is right though. And I can’t give you all the details or else Saucy won’t have any hot news to gather on her own! ;) lol

If anyone has questions or concerns feel free to email me at photos@wyattgallery.com

Hi,
Is online registration for overseas people going to start at the same time as people registering in person?
Will overseas people be required to pay everything upfront again? And what payment methods are you going to use for people abroad?
Thank you!

Anonymous said...

Sauce & Wyatt, I'm posting this here up from down below:

That's kool Wyatt. So here's my first inquiry:
"We have hired a new team to manage registration, production, and distribution. As well we have created a new software to use for registration."

Are you at liberty to give us a little more detail on this statement? What should the IP masqueraders look forward to this coming Carnival:

Will there be more service with a smile and less service with a scowl? (I'm not trying to be funny, I'm serious)
Will they be able to make CC payments directly online via this new software?
And receive instant verification that they are registered and the payment has been correctly processed?
Has Moneygram been sent to its final resting place?
Will there be appropriate and equitable sizing for all of the masqueraders?
Are there going to be emails which are both timely and informative for all?
Is the costume shown at the launch the EXACT one that they will register for and receive? In its ENTIRETY?
What will be so different or so special about the three processes of:
Registration
Production
Distribution?
Will Dolli be able to get a complimentary drink at the launch along with Sauce? ;)

Since today is already 8/15/06, and I believe IP is launching in 3 days on the 18th, it would be nice to let your aficionados know what promising things they have to look forward to. At least to create a tad bit less mystery and a bit more hype (so to speak) prior to the big day on Saturday. I personally feel that IP has some of the best mas out there!

Mind you, I'm not trying to take you to task Wyatt, but if I were a past masquerader of IP, these would be some of the questions I would have. Thanks.

Dolli said...
Oops...I meant 8/15/07. Just checking to see if allyuh were paying attention. ;)

Wyatt said...

it will start at the same time. 50% upfront deposit. (frontline might be full) working on payments.

Wyatt said...

ok dolli: let me see what i can do hear. wow... i see i not gonna get any other work done tonight ;) i'm going to type it in WORD and then past it here. brb

Anonymous said...

lol WORD! he real serious now!

Anonymous said...

Okay Wyatt. Sorry...LOL! I just thought that these questions would be the most commonly asked; just trying to free you from the annoying shackles of redundancy. :S

Carnival folks, PLEASE read the questions and Wyatt's responses VERY CAREFULLY so that he does not waste valuable time typing & repeating himself. Thanks all!

Wyatt,
i'm considering playing mas with IP if their costumes tickles my fancy..lol. But i am discouraged by past reports of poor service and the oh so repetitive costume sizing malfunction. When i pay close to $3000. for a costume and service i expect service to be top notch. Also her service was a little poor, please i do hope that this coming year is new and imprroved because IP has the vibe and the costumes but n ot the right PR skills. From pervious masqueraders it's a hassle. So please do hope to ensure a hassle free service.

I'd like to see all bands do well and I like how he's handling himself. Only RHEL woman should check for Wyatt, LOL. Lord knows we don't want him unprepared for that launch! ;)
Whooooooo. (Wipes brow)

I've got some work to do...I'll be back though. Hopefully!

Hi Wyatt,

I'm a usual IP masquerader, and I'd like to address a few matters that occurred last year, that definitely need improvement (sorry for the repetition of Dolli's questions, but she sent her post before I got to finish mine):

- Saucy and Dolli already mentioned registration, so I shan't harp on it anymore. I trust that the new team and tools you've got in place would also have a positive impact on that aspect. I do think that the online registration format was poorly designed. The site itself was pretty manoeuvrable, but the registration thing was quite clunky. I like that you mentioned that you were against the full payment for overseas masqueraders. Of course, it means that come time for collection, things had better be on point because there'd be many more people paying off balances.

- Costume collection was also a massive disaster. Again, I'm very glad that you're dealing with this. Some questions on this matter, however, are:
 Location of costume collection, and whether it'll be in Hooters again? (don't think that's such a good idea because it's obviously not very well suited to the large numbers of customers);
 Will goodie bags be included with the costume, or can we expect to get rain checks, or even more insulting, having them flung unceremoniously over a wall?
 Will registrants be notified of costume changes, or will there be surprises come collection time that frontlines/backpacks/ornate headpieces are no longer provided owing to lack of demand?

- Costumes—-last year IP masqueraders were given the pre-ordered S/M/L/XL fare, where players in other bands were treated to a more customised product. I know it's just part of an effort to keep costs down, and we appreciate your looking out for us with respect to cost control, but I do think we deserve something more for the money. Also, a more thorough fitting guide would help loads.

- My road experience was super-duper, and I know one of the main dilemmas is whether or not to have a lunch stop. I'll submit my views on Saucy's poll tomorrow, but I will say that the mini-break that we had this year by Jenny's was very disappointing. Where I do not like being forced to break rhythm in the middle of my mas to take a rest, if one is implemented, I think you should make it in a location where the masqueraders can partake of amenities as powder rooms, grassy resting spots, etc. Again, I'd prefer if my money were spent on other things that I'd actually use (security (you mentioned that it's already being improved), enhanced menu, bar replenishment, smokingly hot costume, …)

- I also want to ask about the route. It was my understanding that there was a TRIBE/IP clash where we were competing with each other to get to the Foreshore first. Can we have a better route planned so that we're not stuck in Carnival Tuesday night traffic, and ultimately stripped of our Stadium finale?

These are just a few of the questions, and I tried to offer suggestions too, so as to not appear as if I was attacking you. I really applaud your coming on the blog and offering to answer our questions. That's some EXCELLENT PR on IP Mas' part.

And I think that you definitely need to get Sauce and Dollz a litte complimentary beverage.

Cheers!

Mr. Wyatt

As a mas player I just want to thank you and give you kudos for braving the blog. It says a lot about your commitment to your mas players that you would open yourself up to this very public forum. Although I am not a IP mas player I have plenty of friends who played with IP last year and while they loved their costumes (well the parts they got anyways) they were very concerned about the customer service. I was also put off last year by your sizing requirements since I do not fit the size -0, pretty gyul image IP seems to espouse. While Tribe may have issues with costume design, they made my costume to fit all of my curves and them some.

I am looking forward to IP's launch and sharing my friends excitement as they prepare to play with IP this year. Good Luck and God Bless!

This is excellent damage control so-to-speak. Thanks Wyatt for your info and insight. I'm sure that IP has heard the many angst and cries of it's masqueraders and I'm positive that the 3rd time around what was of the past will remain in the past, and that your masqueraders will have nothing but the best things to say about C2K8 and beyond!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

cb, tomorrow.. a woman MUST rest.. lol.

Wyatt said...

ok here goes.... whoever said i might not know what i'm getting myself into was probably right! i didnt' plan this out, it just happened today out of pure coincidence of bumping into Saucy. and i'm glad we did.

Yes i am not a Trini, by blood. just been here on and off for 10 years. and got inolved in carnival in 2001 in Barbarossa then poison for a few years. so i'm passionate about carnival. i played mas in 98 for the first time, in Poison, and haven't missed a year yet!! i love my mas just like allyuh!! so i know where yuh coming from. i want to have fun on the road and during the week of carnival, and if you not having fun than i can't have fun. because too many people recognize me and complain to ME. so trust meh, i want you to have a perfect experience!!! but i live in NYC so i not always here.

i am pretty sure that IP Mas has heard all the complaints and is aware of last years problems. i don't mind at all hearing them again though. so let me address the main things mentioned so far:

1. Will there be more service with a smile and less service with a scowl? (I'm not trying to be funny, I'm serious)

Yes. This is a must. And our GM and I are personally working on this because it is very very important to all of us at IP mas. You should always get smiles. Always. And if you don’t, please email me and I’ll do my best to fix it, so it doesn’t’ happen again.
please visit our camp or call us and see how our service is this year and let me know ;) (let's not forget though that although we might have some sour apples, we not all sour, there are some very friendly people working for us)

it does seem like IP mas gets much more criticism than any other band. sometimes i wonder if everyone just wants us to fail? i hope not :(

2. Will they be able to make CC payments directly online via this new software?

WG:the software finds your name in our records if you have played mas with us before. so once you type in your name, all your info will come up and you can update it if needed. this will speed up registration at the camp.

Credit Card payments are difficult because it takes a huge percentage of each sale from us. so it's hard to keep the cost low. but you will be able to use moneygram online to pay with credit card or debit card.

Has Moneygram been sent to its final resting place? LOL this was very funny! well they are our sponsor so we can't send them to the grave! and i'm sure a lot of people use moneygram for personal use, ent? but you will be able to pay with a credit card online through moneygram.

3. Will there be appropriate and equitable sizing for all of the masqueraders?

Yes all sizes are available. We do accommodate all sizes. and i do have photos to prove it ;). Certain costumes due to their design cannot fit every size though. as you'll see in the photo saucy posts tomorrow. But this year, we will have the actual bras pre-decorated for you to try on at the mas camp so u know how it will fit and not have any surprises.

as well, when people sign up early, it is easy for us to accommodate any size. at a certain point in to the season we must pre-order all the sizes even if people haven't registered for them or else we won't be able to get them decorated in time when they order. so at a certain point we must make educated guesses based off of past years sizes (how many people in which sizes) in order to know how many bras and bottoms to have made in which sizes. so if at a certain point you register and we don't have it, then it's because we actually don't and can't at that time. And because carnival is 2 weeks earlier this year, we have even less time so we will be getting the ball rolling "one time" on production.

5. Are there going to be emails which are both timely and informative for all?

WG: Yes, I am heading this too. i think from this blog, u can see i am serious about this. i would like to email you once a week. even just to say hi ;) (i'm serious)

6. Is the costume shown at the launch the EXACT one that they will register for and receive? In its ENTIRETY?

WG: Certain parts of the launch are for dramatic purposes and could be individual costumes but yes, All costumes shown on the site and in the mas camp will be exactly what masqueraders will receive. If for some reason our suppliers run out of a certain material and the costume must change, we will notify all masqueraders of this as soon as we are aware of the situation.

7. What will be so different or so special about the three processes of:
Registration
Production
Distribution?

WG: first off i'd like to say that i think because most of us at IP Mas come from an artistic/ entertainment background we were able to perfect that side of our band more quickly. but we realize that you want great organization, great customer service, and great service for your money. and that is what we are focusing on right now. that is what is important to us too and what we are dedicating ourselves to in 2007-2008. i hope that people still partly play mas because of beautiful costumes too though, and not just cause a band is well organized but has uncreative costumes. isn't carnival about "mas" too. don't read this sentence wrong, i am not saying organization is not important, it is very much so. and we want to give you 100% pleasurable service.

registration: the new software called CRIS will improve the speed and accuracy of registration. we are the only band with this software and i'm sure by next year the others will use it too. we will have computers for you to use to register your information directly into our system. if you've played mas with us before, we will have your info already.

We will also be open longer hours and we will have friendly informative employees to serve YOUR needs.

We will also provide a few days of costume viewing (online and in the camp) prior to the registration process.

Distribution: we are in talks now to secure a gigantic space for distribution. I can't give you details but we know we need a HUGE space and we will definitely be open for MUCH longer hours. We will make it comfortable for you while you are there as well. We might even offer delivery service. what you think about that? you'd have to pay additional for it though. thoughts?

Production:
we have already set up a new system (perfected our old one) for productions. in general, you were very critical with us and it forced us to be just as critical on ourselves. so we have spent the past months scrutinizing our process and have implemented methods to fix the problems. (mind you, many people had no problems last year. but it is true that if youhad a problem you will voice it more than if you didn't have one. Think about that allyuh...uh huh you agree don't you! :) )

Ok what else can i answer?

Security: more men. New person heading security and he has a passion for it. security is very very important to me. i think you might have seen me walking thru the band with 2 security men kicking people out the band. many of the people i had to kick out were the husbands/boyfriends of women playing in our band though. and they had their wrist band and were drinking your drinks!!! one of the reason tribe's security is so successful is cause tribe's masqueraders don't want non-masqueraders in their band. i got kicked out one year and i know the owners! lol.. so if you want our security to improve you must work with us and not encourage non-masqueraders (husbands or strangers) to come jump with us. we know our band is fun and we have amazing music and we have celebs that draw attention. but you as the IP masquerader have to play your part too. please :)

Lunch: we debate and debate over whether to stop for lunch (in a park with grass etc) or to keep rolling. Some people want to stop others don't. so tell us what u want and we will provide it.

food and drinks: allyuh know our food was amazinng last year! did you try those mini cakes? wow! and our newly designed lower to the road drinks trucks so you don't have to reach up! can we get some credit here? thanks. yes sometimes one truck is out of something. but we replenish it soon. we not out of it.

goodie bags: ok the truth is our supplier of goodie bags really screwed us last year. sorry to have to blame it on someone else but that's the facts. we won't let it happen again.

listen, i know many of you would have large doubts about playing mas with us again this year. and even if you've already ruled it out. why not come to the launch and see our costumes and feel our vibe out. maybe you'll notice differences already! and if you skip this year, and then hear about how amazing it was, then you can come back next year. but will you really have more FUN in another band? or will it just be the safer choice? i can understand if u take the safer choice, but i assure you, we are taking these changes very seriously and refuse to let you down. and believe it or not, there are thousands of people that had an amazing IP mas experience and are looking forward to their next year with us. so come let us serve you and give you a wonderful experience.

WOW! I'm a Triber but I really must congratulate you on taking the time and effort to come to this blog and answer past & future IP masqueraders questions and concerns. I'm quite impressed especially as I have the impression that the owners/leaders of bands in general are not often prone to getting their hands dirty in one-to-one convos with the very people that make their bands successful! It really does show that your care about your band and the experiences your masqueraders have. Seems you have some good people skills happenin :)

shells said...

well said Wyatt, and as someone said...quite mature.

Are at liberty to say if another sponsor was chosen for the goddie bags? While it does not affect the choice of bag, if one is promised as part of the package, then it should be recieved, and delivered in a civilised mannaer. It is understood that your sponsor 'screwed you' this year in that regard, but that was no excuse to treat your masqueraders like beggars and throwing them over a fance, and having people just packed up against a gat trying to collect something that was promised. It could have been handled better.

Thanks again..and welcome to Saucy's blog again.

Saucy well done..and you deserve an award for the service that you are providing here...p/s:- hook her up with the media Pass :)

Hi Wyatt. I'm back and I must go again, but I'm happy to see that you really made an effort to respond to my questions for the IP massive out there. I will look @ ur responses in more detail tomorrow and tell u what I think about them in detail (lol). As for this:
" i would like to email you once a week. even just to say hi ;) (i'm serious)"

Kool, Wyatt. LOL. You can email me at:

driving_miss_dolli@hotmail.com

BTW, I didn't know MoneyGram sponsored u guys......

All I can recommend is that u don't worry about a costume delivery service just yet for 2K8. Focus on getting a larger, more comfortable & efficient venue to streamline costume collection. Especially since time is of the essence as you so correctly mentioned. In the future IP can worry about something extra like that. We all must crawl b4 we walk, you what I mean? :D
Later for now....Good nite!

Hey everyone... Im extremely elated I discovered this blog, made possible by my ever so effervescent Island People group on facebook. Ok getting down to business. I am an island people fanatic, i enjoy your parties and of course when i heard you all were coming out with a Carnival band.. I loved nothing better. Ive been a masquerader with you all since you inception in '06 and even though we were plagued by POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE and other minor unfortunate glitches (like d awful Fresh Express in '06 and that Horrible Monday Lunch in '07 all wasnt well there), i must say i had the grandest time on the road and this is what keeps me coming back for more. Most of my friends are bailing out on me.... recently a few told me that they were migrating to Tribe... but im hanging in there...and literally threatening some of them to stay with me, because i have faith that you all would get your act together and make everything right! So Wyatt you definitely made my night.... i mean morning is like 1:00 AM LOL... you revived hope in me with your encouraging words and i would make it my duty to ensure that my friends see this Blog. I would be very present on Saturday, I cant wait to see what y'all have in store for us. Much Love!

Saucy what kinda high tech blog you have here, displaying ppl government name.

Anyway Wyatt kudos to you for doing this. I have dealt with you in the past and you have always gone out of your way to help ppl. My issue is your sentiment does not seem to be shared by other ppl in management. Whereas you, Marlon and some others will put the customer first and try your best to fix any issues, if you try to approach some of the other ppl, mainly Dane Lewis (yes i calling names) you will be instantly ignored.

Many of the same issues from 2007 occurred in 2006, the band was aware and yet there was no change, many will argue things got worse. Why was there no change in 2007?

I am not exactly loyal to IP, since my costume ent free (hint hint) but I have to leave the house in a nice costume or i staying home so based on that you all have my money but what is our guarantee for lack of a better word that this is not just talk? To put another way how do we know that this effort is not just a one man show and others in the organization share your views on the matter? When they coming to blog?

Hello Wyatt...thanks for giving us this opportunity to voice comments.
Moving along, I have a very simple question: Will Island People be set up for credit card payments???? This option was not available last year. Please kindly advise.

Ok, so I do have a question.
Mr. Gallery, for 2k6 it's no secret that I fell in love with Songbird costume, but when I picked up the costume the wings were not as what was seen on the site and the launch. Will the actual costumes be made as what we've seen at launches and on the site etc.?

Hi Wyatt, I have a comment for you: I live in NY (yes, we met before - Poison's Kwan Yin NYC Registration). And I am a IP fanatic!! lol...
Anyway, when I went to pay my balance last year, I was informed that only cash or 'linx' was accepted. I had to drive all over the place looking for a bank to get the $$ (and i'm sure you know there's a limit to the amount withdrawn, thus, I had to go back to the bank the following day to withdraw the rest of the $$). I know it costs $$ to have those credit card machines in place, but it would be a lot more convenient for ppl that live abroad pay with our 'debit/credit' cards rather than walk with all that cash on hand. Especially since some of us get off the plane and head straight to the camp to pick up our costumes. I was at that camp about 3 times before i was able to receiving my costume. Thanks for your help!

The Comedy of Errors Called Me said...

wyatt,
I appreciate you taking the time to try and clarify things for IP 2k8.

I have told you this in person and in a letter to IP after the horrid experience I had last year. I've loved you guys since Galvanize days. The costumes weree beautiful and like you said the road is amazing.

But last year the customer service and quality at least of my section was terrible. I can understand that its extremly hard to bring mas on this scale. But I wrote an EXTENSIVE letter after the fact. I gave jack his jacket where you guys did good. And I commented on where things were bad. And what did I get? A 2 line generic response that everyone else who complained got. Sorry but that HURT IP more than helped it. I wrote my email, sincerly hoping it would help and had hoped for some type of REAL acknowledgement. And now, there's all these claims that our complaints were heard? Can you see how it sounds like empty promises?

I'm sure there are many others with my sentiment. I would love to come back. Being abroad, I can't visit the mas camp or attend the launch. So I can't see anything to say I wont experience the same thing again. When complaints were sent, no one was asking for free costumes (well, I wasn't at least) but some type of REAL, CONCRETE amends should have been made. A discount next time, a tshirt, hell even just a personalized response!

Something more concrete than just saying you heard our complaints would be more meaningful for people. Cause nothing was said or done to/for us until now, when its time again for people to put out there money.

"Will the actual costumes be made as what we've seen at launches and on the site etc.?"

WTFork? Steups! Reading, I guess is NOT so fundamental....

Previous question & Wyatt's response:

I just ask that costumes be worth the money we spend. I played Nubians last year and the costume started falling apart before I even left the house. Every women had the bones sticking out of they're bras by mid-day. I had a great time playing with Island People that last 2 years. But all I ask is if you gonna take all we money please give us quality in return.

Hello Wyatt,
This will be my 1st time and I'm in Boston, MA. I'm arriving Jan 26th and wondering will I get the same treatment as people in T&T? Such as goody bag etc.

Can at least the bras be sized using actual cup sizes? It makes it better for the small back big breast women to have a great fit!

Thanks,
Monique

"Credit Card payments are difficult because it takes a huge percentage of each sale from us. so it's hard to keep the cost low."

Standard fees for Visa and Mastercard are only 2% per transaction. The flat monthly fee is usually about 8 bucks a month. Is this really an enormous amount for a XXX priced costume? It would seem like a small price to pay to ensure what you call fantastic customer convenience. Sure the consumers abroad might have an additional foreign transaction fee from their banks of 2-3% but of course this is the masquerader's choice for the convenience.

Just food for thought. I would like to hear your comments on why you think this isn't justified. I am assuming that there were significant profits made last year....otherwise you wouldn't be in business again this year.
