Ok, so I know many of you are wanting to bring out the inner H.O. for Carnival 2008 and have decided to play a front liner with TRIBE. I have also seen many people on facebook with photos of costumes in their profile which, sorry to say, are not frontliners but Individual costumes. Like Phoenix that means only ONE costume is going to be made, tough luck there. The individual costumes are Black Magic (gasp, that is NOT a frontline costume), Phoenix and the white one with the body suit which I believe is the Individual for Almathea.
Frontline costumes are available for the following sections:
Autumn Sprite
Goddess of the Chase
Pixie Dust
Lady of the Lake
Isis
Mystique
Silver Mist
Butterfly Bliss
Also rumour has it that to be a frontliner you need to be committed to the cause and as a result your pocket will show just how much and how badly you want it. Deposits on frontline costumes will be more than the usual $1200.00 or $200.00US, so be prepared for that one. In addition, there is a strong possibility that frontline costumes might be required full payment before costume production. Thing is, I heard that many people get caught up in the excitement to be a frontline H.O. then realise later on that their budget cannot meet their desire and they never collect their costume. Unfortunately these errant H.O.s might have made things tough for all the other F.H.O.s. I suspect that many people might drop the thought of being a H.O. when they see the prices this year as well. Those frontline costumes are NOT cheap (have you seen the feathers used in Goddess of the Chase) and I can only hazard a guess that the individual costumes will be just as hot in price as they look.
Point is if you really want to be a frontliner for 2008 be prepared to pay up; being a H.O. is never cheap!

In shock over that revelation about Black Magic!!
What is the frontline Autumn Sprite like? Is the cosutme with wings in all the pics the frontline or backline?
Ah I wish they'd put the website up soon!
Great post!
too bad about Black Magic which is still my favorite after seeing the viewing pics.
I must say after seeing black costumes with feathers this weekend at T.O., those ladies looked soooo hot and sweaty and MISERABLE!
I think the lesson in viewing Big carnival as an observer for the first time is that it is VERY IMPORANTANT to select a costume that complements your skin tone, stature and body shape.
I was surprised to see a fair number of dark skinned sisters in this particular BLACK costume and I must admit, it didn't flatter them at all. Did nothing to compelement their skin tone.
I saw short women overwhelmed by BIG FRONTLINE type costumes. If you are not going to adjust your costume for your height, don't DO IT. I saw frontliners wearing their costume with poor posture and thought to myself, you can't be frontline and not stand straight. Even if normally, you have a haunch and are a shy introvert, you've got one day to leave all that behind and represent the section! You have to WEAR THAT COSTUME and not let it wear you. There is a responsibility, no? haha!
I saw larger women in flimsy whimsical costumes obviously designed with waif thin and/or petite women in mind. Too little costume.
maybe I'm naive and too green. *shrug* i dunno.
Frontline Autumn Sprite is with wings, well at least the two options showed on the night of the launch was with or without wings. Naturally I assumed, SINCE THERE WAS NO NARRATION, that the winged version is the frontline.
JJ that is why I look at each costume and decide which is suited to be. I would never consider cutey sections like Butterfly Bliss and Water Nymph because they look suited for younger girls, nor would I wear a costume that does nothing for my complexion so that rules out silver mist.
I am totally picky about my costume and do not care about what is the "hot" or "it" section.
When Saucy informed that Phoenix was an individual, I imagined right away that Black Magic "frontline" is an individual. The cost of the feathers alone on that costume is enought to paydown on a car! I really hope Goddess of the Chase large and fantastic headpiece is for the frontline of that section.
Note to TRIBE: the narration at the launch was/is crucial and very much needed to keep things clear for everybody.
Excellent observations and points JJ. I studied mas on the road in Trinidad for 5 yrs before I committed to play. Some of that was a bit of natural shyness for me, but I had to understand how to "live the mas" on the road. I love that Trinidad Carnival flows through my veins now. I ain't ready yet like the prettidolli pepper seasoning (yes there are male versions -straight for emphasis, lol- of that), but ah learning rel fast! ;)
I agree 100% with JJ & Saucy. We have to know & understand which costume will flatter us. I LONG to be a frontline HO but because I am vertically challenged I know that it's not for me. I do not want to look ridiculous on the road. As much as I love a big, fabulous frontline - I can never be that HO unless it's on a smaller scale :(

amprincess, i don't think being short automatically eliminates the possiblity of being a frontliner. check out this. http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1589/8205488/15346181/232477852.jpg
the frontliners to the right and in the second row are tiny and petite, but yet their headpieces are smaller and less overwhelming that the one on the left.
i think us short ones have to take the extra time and energy adjust our costumes to suit. pluck out a few feathers of large headpieces, use less fabric, hem and shorten where needed.
i'm only 5 ft 2 3/4 inches myself and hope to one day be a FHO before I become too old!
Just FYI JJ, Dark-skinned people CAN wear black. I understand that colors must complement people's skin tones but to make a blanket statement is just plained predjudiced.
My biggest inspiration last year was Wendy Fitzwilliams rocking that fierce black costume, looking more regal than anyone!
I agree with JJ that being short should not automatically eliminate your desire to be an F.H.O or I.F.H.O! I am 5'3"(the medical charts say 5'2" and change, who cares!). However, I have doing the I.F.H.O. thing with Tribe. It's all a matter of knowing your limitations (for me, my height *or lack thereof*) and working with the designer to make sure that the costume is designed to flatter, not overwhelm, you.
anon 3:50pm, if you read my post, I never said dark-skinned people can't wear black!! I did NOT MAKE ANY BLANKET STATEMENT.
If REREAD, it said that that "particular" black costume did nothing to compelement those particular masqueraders I saw. That "particular" costume with the feathers and fishnet.
I know about Wendy Fitzwilliam and know she is a beautiful woman who has worn all sorts of beutiful creations of all shades. In fact, I saw another black costume yesterday that looked fine with all masqueraders wearing it, but my comment was on ONE costume and those particualr masqueradors .
welll I dnt have tolerence 4 the huge head pieces....but da day I do I will be a FHO nad I will look damn good doin it but I always saw myself doin it wit poison!!!!
So funny today on my Carnival Blog before coming here I wrote a little blurb about the appeal of the Frontline..lol...I find peeps who love to play frontline should NOT COMPLAIN about the price anymore...hell it's expected that it would be considerably more than floor members...but dayummm a FRONTLINE IS DEH ONLY WAY TO GO...AT LEAST FOR ME!!! Gimme meh big ass headpiece, backpack or whatever and an elaborately decorated tiny bikini :D I'm all good...I READY FUH DEH DAMN ROAD!!!
Allyuh said good tings on here...LOL. Well most of allyuh.
JJ, for someone who hasn't quite H.O.'ed yet, you seem to know what you're talking about! ;)
Did the T.O. ladies look THAT miserable wearing black? Wow!
Dougsie, should the pepper seasoning be bottled? Cuz' we Trinis like de HOT STUFF! LMAO..
dolli, not all black costumes were hot...just this one with a big feather boa that masqueraders had to wear around their neck.
Tribe's black magic, i can see where an oversized headpiece where the feathers rest on your shoulders could get hot, but otherwise, the top and bottom on Black Magic has enough silver and is a more simple and less complex design to flatter anyone. That looks fine. There was another black costume that had silver adornments, something like Black Magic that looked fine.
this other particular costume I am referring to was like a dominatrix with leather and fishnet. too much going on and then they fling a big ass boa round yuh neck to top it off! ick!
hot! hot! the ones I saw all look sweaty and miserable to me.
