De Gulf - Ronnie and Caro Carnival 2008

Ronnie and Caro, formerly a section of Legacy, held their 2008 Carnival band launch last night at Club Ambassador. On display were nine sections from their inaugural Carnival presentation "De Gulf".

This is an all-inclusive band which according to the information given seeks to cater to masqueraders looking for a smaller, more intimate band which can deliver the service and comforts associated with the large bands. Each section is expected to cater to approximately 125 masqueraders, totalling to around 1200 masqueraders overall.

For more information please visit the website which impressively came online at one minute past the stroke of midnight!

My review of the launch and costumes are to follow but in the interim here is a first look at sections from "De Gulf":

Moonlight in de Bocas

Jelly Fish

Treasures

De Mang

Down de Islands

Scarlet Ibis

Pirates

Wild Fish

Dragon Fly (Batimamzelle)

looks interesting. I played w/ Legacy this year and Ronnie and Caro's section looked like they had a blast.
How did the costumes look in person? Can't wait for the review.

I saw quite a few sections I liked Saucy. I LOVE the colours of the Mang, the belt and bra are very nice, BUT that headpiece need some work.

Ronnie & Caro aren't playing! Launch, website, & registration all at the same time. I'm very excited for things to come. I know it's early but it gives the feeling of smooth sailing already.

Battimamselle is nice the rest...I have no comment.

Anyway, I wish them the best of luck, with everything up at once this couple is not playing. Congrats to them.

“De Gulf” immediately conjures the Gulf of Paria and the names of the sections made a connection instantly. The designs hit their marks on theme. Nice!

I had a lil reservation about two sections: Jewel and Pirate. For Jewel, I would have thought “black gold,” oil (the website did indirectly referenced oil for this section). Jewel really is about sunken plunder of pirate legend during the big sailing ships epoch. But I am not too keen on a Pirate in the midst of the other colourful, beautiful, tropical invoking sections. So, Jewel (black being the obvious colour for oil would clash, I think) could have been changed to something like Paria Sunset (there is a moonlight section ; ) ) using splashes of orange with that yellow and gold. Pirate eliminated entirely, and replaced with something like Memories of Amazon (Trinidad was connected to the South American continent, and some Amazon rivers do wash into the Gulf).

My favorite costume is Wild Fish (with plume backpack), and next fav is Dragon fly (Batimamzelle) (without wings).

And oh gosh, no true men’s design from bikini mas again; Harts is listening a bit (still too much surfer shorts, though).

I hope other regional Trini style carnival band take a serious study of these designs, because they are using similar materials mostly, and frankly not producing mas that pop like these (in the construction of the pieces).

Ronnie and Caro, “De Gulf” nice, ent!

Saucy I now see you were there at 6! I got there after 8...maybe that's why I missed you.

I think they need to re-work the Mang headpiece and I could definitely play in it. If they don't have a larger headpiece option. I would just have to do it myself! I'm also seeing me decorating a GORGEOUS pair of bronze coloured boots for this costume!

We didn't get to see the male to the costume though Saucy, so I was surprised to see you had pics.

Ronnie and Caro's website is still the only carnival 2k8 site that is up. For a new band that's very impressive. They putting the others to shame. What happen to these other bands. They stickin.
