The fabric debate ................

So why is it I must be getting emails asking "saucy do you really think it is Versace fabric TRIBE using? or "Saucy will the costumes be real expensive because you say is Versace cloth?" or "Saucy Versace does not make fabric, what lies is that TRIBE telling?!!!"

While I find these questions and comments quite amusing since the designer of the costumes was the one who told me that the fabric is Versace, and you are free to believe it or not, I just put it on my blog as "ah buy it ah sell it"; I never paid any attention to proving whether it might be true or not.

Fact is if I like a costume I will pay for it and do not need to be sold on the expensive materials that are used in it, come on, I know that the money we pay is not for costume ALONE, that's why costume ALONE cannot sway my decision when playing mas; the total package is what I pay for; the total package , coupled with priceless experience, must be worth every cent to me! But I digress!

Imagine due to the several emails I got in response to this topic I am now looking online to see if it is true, does Versace make fabric and how expensive it is if they do? First off I found a website selling Versace wool that was manufactured in Italy according to this website and bears the Versace stamp:

(click on photo for larger view)

These are the details of the fabric:

Product Name: Versace Wool Fabric
Brand Name: Gianni Versace
Model No.: 003
Product Origin: Italy
Payment Terms: T/T
Minimum Order: all 7.6 meters
Category: Textiles & Leather Products > Wool Fabrics
Packaging: by courier only.Additional charges applied.
Delivery: 10

And you can find all the information on the website here.

I also came upon an online Fabric Store called D'Italia which according to their website sells Versace fabric in addition to several other designer brands:

With fabric ranging from classy casual to very formal, d’Italia offers an impressive variety of the most unique, unusual and exclusive designer fabric imported from Italian and French manufacturers who create for the top fashion houses of Europe. Labels regularly in store include Gucci, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Escada, Chanel, Balenciaga, Pucci, Max Mara, Valentino, Cerruti, Versace, Cavalli, and Jil Sander.

Q: Where does d’Italia source its fabric from?

A:
All our stock is imported from Italy and France only, as we believe that these sources are superior in their manufacture of the finest quality fabric. We purchase from the most reputable manufacturers in Italy and France who create only genuine top-quality fabric. These same sources manufacture for the top European designer fashion houses – including the likes of Gucci, Armani, Versace, Balenciaga, Prada, Dolce Gabbana, Jil Sander, Roberto Cavalli, Escada, Valentino and Chanel… As such, d’Italia’s stock includes these labels at all times.
From this research I can surmise that fabric for design houses, including Versace is made in Italy and France and these same fabrics are also available for purchase under the designer label, therefore it is possible to buy Versace fabric made in Italy or France.

This whole debate has been rather educational, at least no one can say Versace fabric does not exist, however it is left to you, the paying masquerader to believe if this fabric was indeed used in the design of TRIBE's costumes. As for me I will keep my comments on this whole issue to myself because ultimately the choice of a costume is my decision and no one is paying for it but me. At the end of the day which ever costume I choose it will be based on more than the label on the fabric or what type of beads and crystals were used to decorate it; as long as my budget can afford it they can drape me in Swarvoski and Verscace or Jimmy Aboud textiles and rhinestones for all I care!

lol @ this discussion. I am a fashion designer/ stylist based in NYC who has bought fabrics from fabric shops here in NYC. To touch on this debate about designer fabric... correct, fashion houses usually do not make their own fabric, but outsource. They usually work with a fabric mill (usually based in Italy) and design a fabric that is usually used in the runway samples then production. If there are any leftover fabrics, they are then "fair game" and sold to a fabric wholesaler/ store for sale to other independent designers and general public. So yes, there is a such thing as Versace fabric (which I have some yardage of). Some of this yardage I know for a fact can go for as much as $100 per yard..

Thanks Lee for your "expert" opinion!

Oh My Good Lord Saucee,

Didn't I tell you:
Hawchie
Cawchie
Versace
Beyachhie.....

I cannot believe the ignorance in folks asking if there is such a thing as Ver-sah-chay (LoL Analiesef) fabric. I was just about to explain this but Lee did such an excellent job that I won't have too. Designers often have a vision as to how their designs will flow, so to speak, on a runway and often have the textiles created to match their own images meticulously down to perfection!

This goes for Manhattan matrons who may want a Valentino red dress produced in a very short period of time but who do not have the time for intricate alterations, etc. The easiest thing to do? Buy the fabric and have an excellent seamstress produce a creation for you!

Folks, the same way Sarce can use google and other search engines so can YOU. Some people are so provincial and closed-minded that they cannot seem to leave the bloody H&M, Forever 21, Strawberry's, and Rainbow alone! Step outside the box sometimes; it is not painful, the air is fresher, and you never know what you might find! ;)

Lawwd put ah hand..........

that fabric i can tell you may be an immitation fabric...if it were the real thing no one would be able to afford it...it is just a knock off like how they make knock off handbags.

Ummm...I don't care! ahahahahaha
Versace cloth does mash up like anything else, yes...just hurry-and-let-us-F-H-O's-REGISTER! lololol :D

JayJayGhatt said...

who cares really if it is a knock off or not? really. i don't get it.

notwithstanding, i don't find it hard to believe that a designer could have access to several hundred yards of fabric at an extremely discounted price especially if the fabric was a discontinued and purchased from a trunk sale OR if it was gotten from some sort of hook up. The possiblities are endless.

Hold up Anon 4:02 PM:

How do YOU know if it were the real thing NO ONE would be able to afford it? That sounds rather presumptous....You are able to speak on EVERYONE'S financial situation? TRIBE has had Sir Richard Branson and friends jumping with them. Are you kidding? Really...Are you?

Alllll of this over some fabric? Hmphy hmph hmph!

Who cares if the fabric is Versace or not. You damn well know that the money you pay for your costume, 50% is for you costume, and the other 50% is for the damn liquor you drinkin on the road. If you can't afford it, CHOOSE ANOTHER SECTION!!!

Anonymous said...

give me a break, if the fabric was that expensive, the costume's price would be through the roof, unless you are getting a piece the size of a handkerchief.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

And what is the cost of the costume? So far we have not seen a price so for all we know it is 6000.00TT :S

This discussion is HILARIOUS and I cannot believe it is still going on
:D

I have shopped at d'Italia and can vouch for the fact that the faric is indeed genuine. Some of the paterned fabrics are designed by the top designers; and/or have been used by them.

Highly reccomended! If you have no idea who they are check them out at ditalia.com.au
