Petition to TRIBE for Redesigning Male Costumes

One of the regular visitors to my blog, Keitrini has organized an online petition to TRIBE to redesign the male costumes. While it may seem like this is being done in jest, I already said that my hubby has signed up in Harts because he is not liking any of TRIBE's male costumes and much to my surprise other wives and girlfriends are saying their men say the same. And here I was thinking that all men cared about was the shorts and the all inclusive band!

This is what the petition says:

To Whom It May Concern,

This is a petition to have Tribe consider redesigning the men's 2008 costumes. Tribe did an outstanding job with the female costumes this year however the male costumes lack creativity, originality and symmetry with the female characters. Many men (including significant others to some females) are displeased with the costumes and either don't want to play with Tribe or worse, at all. We women of Tribe will like to have our men by our sides in a handsome costume to compliment us. Tribe, please consider this petition seriously; your patrons are reaching out to you.

To support this petition visit this website and place you signature. I am sure the organizer of the petition has every intention of forwarding your pleas to TRIBE.

HI, It's Keitrini...I just wanted to say this also applies to single women because if the men don't like the costumes, there will be more women than men in the band.

For real!!!!!!!!!!
And in 2k6 Tribe had some rocking male costumes.. Warrior Spirit and PIMP. The pimps were REALLY working those costumes..

but the whole fairy theme kinda not manly anyways.. maybe some warlocks? hmmm.......

With Tribe security, without eager male masqueraders, allyuh eh gettin no jam at all.

"...but the whole fairy theme kinda not manly anyways..." I kidda disagree pimp 2k7. The designers were just "lazy" on the men's "costumes" (look how easy for you to suggest one GREAT idea for Black Magic...Hello) ;) For sure, there was at least variety this year for "Ole Time Something..." :)

I agree, my wife wants to play with this band and so do i after seeing how Tribe took care of their masqueraders last year i was all for tribe. however after seeing the costumes for 2008 i must say i am a bit reluctant. what happened to all the great men in mythical times ? like zeus merlin poisiden hercules i would even jump up in a peter pan outfit...there are dozens to choose from. even if they want to keep inline with the names of their sections the costumes could definitly use some more work. Come on Tribe you are the furture of mas in trini we expect more from you. don't make mas go in the traditional direction as only being for women. we men need nice costumes too. afterall they cost almost the same.

I am going to sign that petition. I agree, on the name suggestions. Merlin and Posiedon costumes would be fyah for the men. Zeus, Eros, heck, even Dumbledore from the HP films/books...hey why not?

I definitely should not be the one to say anything, because I have never worn my entire costume.... ID band and shorts good enough for me (although 07 warrior spirit chest piece was cool).

But in this case it's clear that Tribe realizes that their margins on male costumes are much more favorable than that of female costumes. And that the avg. male really cares more about the women in the band more so than costume design. Therefore, they have put alot of emphasis on having great female sections and are probably aiming to offset the reduced margins there, by producing basement quality male costumes.

With that said, it's is still astonishing the lack of effort put into those designs... I could have done better with a card box and crayons... It's almost disrespectful to the faithfuls who actually wear their entire costumes year in and year out.

any ways as long as they get my waist size right I cool!

IP here is your chance to step up!

it being so close to registration i dont think its that feasible to revamp the male costumes from the ground up. a good compromise would be to make the male costumes much cheaper than they have been in previous years and give men the option of just wearing the shorts sans the unattractive chest and head pieces. if i was male triber, i could live with that compromise.

"...give men the option of just wearing the shorts..."

aminahd, not atall. This is Carnival and MAS should be on the road. What you are wishing for is a street block party. Nah, nah, nah, Trinidad Carnival is MAS and CULTURE. There are plenty of great fetes before Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday men should PLAY MAS, or step to the side of the road and watch.

The only "compromise" is for designers of bikini mas to step up their games/standards and design REAL costumes for men. If men want shorts and bare back and don't want to wear REAL costumes, let them go; there are many great looking men willing to fill the void. It is just these men are not seeing REAL mas costumes worth playing in years of mediocre designs. I am one of those men. :)

Some men put up with it, because they have no other choice but to wear those silly costumes to be in the band. That is a shame. This is our culture, and we should not let it wash away to mediocrity. Sorry. Men should play mas as well. I am so happy a lot of bikini mas are stepping up their games for women. Have ya'll really, really look at the artistry of the female costumes. Every band so far has merit in their own right. D'Krewe, Ronnie and Caro, Harts and TRIBE. However, only Harts has beautiful male compliments to the sexy female costume of EACH section (I still have a little issue for their surfer shorts on some pieces, but for the most part those costumes are REAL costumes.).

If you have ever studied Harts on the road, you will observe one of the most beautiful, tight bands, where everyone (from teenagers to mature folks- mature women STILL hot) is having a ball. I love to see this band on the road; it is a feast for my eyes. Just for reference, the only bands I have played in are Minshall, and MacFarlane. If I had to play with a bikini band at this time for 2k8, it would be Harts simply because of the male costumes. I would much prefer to play with TRIBE just to see the women who would play in those beautiful designs. I would be quite happy to join them in a REAL costume partying our asses off, looking GREAT going dong d road. Look meh, IT IS OUR CULTURE!

dougla i totally hear what you are saying. What I am saying that if i was a man who HAD to play in TRIBE for whatever reason, I would gladly accept a good discount on the poor costume, wear the shorts alone, and not even bother with the other ugly pieces. If any man wants to play real mas, register in macfarlane or a sailor mas band. Its not tribe or bust. But honestly, most men i know not on mas, they just want to drink and carry on in the road and wine up all the pretty woman that play in TRIBE. The women in tribe seems to have been the biggest draw for male masqueraders, not the costumes.

But I hear what you all are saying and applaud you for trying to inspire your band of choice to up the ante. I hope it works. Its just very close to registration and i DOUBT Tribe will be able to revamp all the male costumes before then. If they do then they ought to be nominated for some kind of award

"The women in tribe seems to have been the biggest draw for male masqueraders, not the costumes."

And women want men to wear REAL costumes. They will have spent a lot of time getting pretty and sexy for the road. Insisting on "playing none mas" in your shorts, is like going to your wedding in cut off jeans when your bride could make the cover of "Bride and Groom." I tell, women are getting tired of that once for a joke thing ;)

Tribe had some really good male costumes this year, what happened to 2008? Like everyone has said, they are simply awfull and looked rushed. In fact when viewed with the female version, they don't match nor compliment each other. Perhaps the 2 that are not bad are Mystique and Silver Mist. The details in Silver Mist for the men are very nice and compliment the female costume very well. We can clearly see the designer aganist the pusedo designer. This was not a hard band to design for the men, they need only look at Harts throughout the years for inspiration.

All arguments about culture etc aside, this has been an ongoing trend with male costumes for the last few years. Except for Jean and Dinah in 2k7 I have always felt that I was settling for a particular design just so I could play with friends, instead of being able to find my perfect costume.

If I do half-assed work, I get reviewed accordingly. Designers treat male masqueraders as afterthoughts and so they deserve to be knocked around for it. I mean these are DESIGNERS and this is the most public display of their work. Is this the best they have to offer us?

The mas experience is great, but I don't enjoy being ripped off. Terrible. Especially since male costumes have crossed the $2000 mark.

My husband played with Trini Revellers this year, I think the section name was Bourgousie (sp) I he got a BEAUTIFULLY made cosutme. A velvety type coat with tails and a nice hat, it totally complimented the female costume.
