So, interesting observation yesterday when I got a free copy of Harts 2006 Carnival magazine. There was one of the Individual masqueraders wearing a costume where the design looked familiar. Now, I am NOT condemning Island People at all for reworking this costume, I mean I never saw it until yesterday anyway but this is for all the people who have lambasted TRIBE saying that they could have waited a few years to "remix" Enchanted Forest and Sahara for their 2008 presentation (obviously I don't subscribe to the fact that TRIBE costumes look very much like Island People's but I am biased)
And, I can compare other costumes.. Oasis and Nylon Pool for example, Goddess and Defenders and Victoria Secrets Angels and the Sahara Jumbie headpiece that looks very much like this headpiece from American Plume and Feather Company.But that is enough playing Devil's advocate today; I just want to remind those with short lived memories that there is very little original concept, design or thought when it comes to bikini mas as inspiration comes from many different sources and no band is immune to this.
I have been told Island People's costumes for 2008 will attempt to go beyond anything that was done before and I eagerly await the viewing to see if they can indeed live up to the expectations. I can't wait!

And some original ones as well (I will not debate the best lol) I think Scared Sands was one of the most beautiful costumes for 2007 and though Sirrocco Winds was not my fave it was another unique piece (unless someone can prove otherwise).And hands down Soleil Brule (cloth version) was amazing, especially the baby frontline costumes.
But I thought yuh say de buck stops here no "band bashing"? Well at least consider a Tribe 2k8 gallery remix and redo post. I'll give you a headstart. IP Sahara Jumbie/Black Magic, IP Arabian Nights/ Lady of the lake, Poison Kwan Yin/Titania.
Now poor IP has to live up to "I eagerly await...if they can indeed live up to the expectations."

Case and Point...everybody does borrow from everybody.
To me, most large bands have their costume designs on point, whether it's IP, Harts or Tribe...but you can only become the best when you combine it with the road experience. You could still have on the prettiest costume in the whole world...but it makes no difference when you have nonsense to deal with like a lack of nourishment or poor security measures.
Every band have their issues to deal with. And that's word.
I LOVE that lil trash can button.. lol.. gets rid of all the crap.

on one hand there is only so much you can do with beads, feathers and a bikini. on the other hand i see mas as an art form, and in art it is frowned up on to blatantly regurgitate someones elses design. i think its interesting that the same people so eager to jump up in IP remixes are the same people that talk so bad about IPs costumes and band as a whole.
On tribes part, its not a good look to rework designs of your rival band. Masqueraders value creativity and ingenuity in their designs, as well as customer service and organization in the band. If you as a mas designer cannot bring something FRESH and NEW and HOT to the table, then why should i fork over a big set of money for your ish?? I do not care who does it, tribe, Island people, macfarlane, minshall, pulse 8, whomever. having designs in your presentation that were seen on the road the year before is NOT A GOOD LOOK .

I also agree with you, its something that happens on BOTH sides of the fence. I don't think its right, I just think it shows that Band loyalty is a very strong thing that is over the top.

Are you serious about this? aminahd, that entire statement is wrong, and simple not true. And worst, it is stoking a flint spark (that simple will not catch fire, I'll say). "...rival band"??? Did you actually look at the designs, or was it just something you heard? If you are truly inspired by art, creativitity, and orignality, you wouldn't make a reckless statement like that. Maybe, your art is of war (and believe me there is no originality in that).

I think to be a tru mas lover, you don't base your costume choice on which band it's in, you base it on which costume you LOVE. So I played in IP this yr (had a blast, a bess time)and if they had launched first for 2k8 I WUD NOT have automatically gone with IP..cuz for me it comes down to which COSTUME I'm in love wit NOT which band I'm in love wit. And I tink if ppl say dey really love mas' there wudn't be this bickering and blind loyalty.

And I do believe this is what Saucy has been doing at her blog along. She has never dissed Island People Mas. She has alway been a fair minded consumer of the product she putting out her money for (a fortune for practically allahwe budgets.) One of the keys for her in the pleasures of her mas playing experience IS service. Allyuh, please try to understand that simple thing nah.
Oh no Dougla_1 I agree wit u..I definitely believe Saucy has been fair...I just see other ppl comments that I term blind loyalty...
In Tribe so far, I LOVE Silver Mist (a bit naked for me but I cud work wit it)and I would buy Goddess of the Chase right now if I didn't want to see what else there was to offer, as well as that Individual costume which alot of ppl thought was a frontline costume.
So me, I'm just waiting until I see dat special costume that I'm in lurvvvve wit regardless of wat band..and I think that's fairminded.

I really doh see notin wrong with band lyalty. As saucy, and many others say, its not only about the costume, but about the service you get, and so I can undestand why people will play with the same band year after year. What it comes down to, is that there is something about a particular group that makes you want more of it every year, be it the price , the people, the costume etc...
As a matter of fact, i am sure thatthere are lots of people who would prefer to play with one band over another even though the prefer the other's costume, because they get something else out of it.
It eh have notin' wrong with band loyalty...........
What we havin a problem with folks is a disrespect for others choices and the inability to take a lil picong.
i don't think that anyone on this blog has been band-bashing. everyone is free tooffer their opinions. An please remember and opinion is just that: an opinion....you are free to agree or disagree.
leh we jus enjoy the designs, give we comments, make a lil joke here and dere and enjoy d ting nah...what's the problem?
