Hey Sauce, could you also ask them to include how much it cost to decorate the boots? I am especially interested in the blue and silver in the middle. Also, how long it took to decorate them. I payed $550 for Natalie to decorate my boots, that's excluding the cost of the boots which I bought for myself. Also, if they had experience decorating boots before because they all look like really professional jobs! Thanks a mil!
$250 - for Boots from Amde
$20 - purple fabric purchased from samaroos, he stiched this onto the boot material before cutting and making the boots
$20 - braid from samaroos
$20 - large pink gems *not sure about this price*
No more than 3 hours all together to decorate. Used the braid from my foot pieces to make the V's, the gems from the foot pieces I threw those on the back there and the feathers from the footpieces I attached to the sides of each boot, sprouting up and out for Tuesday.
First boots I've made yay!
hi Chris,
i was the one who designed and decorated the boots and a few others for that section i have had alot of experience in mas making the boots pictured costs as followed -

stones - TT$24.00
trims - TT$50.00

Even though I been wearing home-decorated boots for a few years, I was leaning heavily towards sneakers this year because of my foot problems, but when I read this post on your blog about some boots you found at Payless, I realized I could have the best of both worlds http://saucytrini.blogspot.com/2007/11/payless-boots.html
By the time I got around to hunting them down, they were only available in 1/2 size larger than my regular boot size, so I was worried that my gel insoles from last year would cause too tight a fit. In the end, I decided to go without the insoles, as I felt that the cushioning of the boot would be comfortable enough.
The process of de-furring them was very tedious. It took about 2 hours, total, and though I wasn't 100 percent satisfied with the results, I figured I could cover up any imperfections with paint.
Instead of spray paint, I decided to go with a fabric paint that I have used in previous years with very good results. Partly because there were some dark coloured accents on the boots (lacing loops and stripes) that I didn't want to cover up, but mainly because I love the rich and durable coverage I get from these paints. I decided to go with 2 coats, but even one would have been quite sufficient, and I ended up using about 2/3 of the jar. The smooth application and rapid drying time made this process very quick and easy.
I replaced the white laces that came with the boots with a pair of brown suede ones from another pair of (Payless) boots I owned. I planned to add my costume leg pieces to the front of my boots for decoration, but I was concerned about finding appropriate braid to cover the back for a 'finished' look. Harts to the rescue! The wristbands supplied with my costume were much too long for my small frame, so I cut off the piece closest to the wrist and added them to the back of the boot. This process was rather hard on my hands, as I used a needle and thread to anchor the braid to the thick fabric, rather than the usual hot glue. But I knew that the boots would be taking a lot of abuse, so I wanted the decoration to be secure.
I'm sorry I didn't photograph the boots at various stages throughout the process, but I've included a picture of the finished product AFTER 2 days on the road and a trip back to NYC squashed in my suitcase. I'm tremendously pleased with the results. Not only did the decorations hold up perfectly, but the comfort level was amazing. This was the first Ash Wednesday in many years that I was able to get out of bed and walk around immediately without limping. My calves were a little sore for a few hours but my feet were totally pain free!
Money:
Boots at Payless US$22.99
Fabric Paint (Lumiere by Jacquard in 'Bright Gold') available at www.dharmatrading.com - US$3.65 for a 2.25 oz jar, good for about 3 coats, depending on fabric.
Laces (borrowed from another pair of boots) - FREE
Decoration (Harts leg-pieces and part of Harts wrist bands) - FREE
Time:
De-furring boots - 2 hours
Painting boots (2 coats) - 1 hour
Applying braid - 3 hours
my boots were pretty easy, they were $20 and stark white. Fabric spray paint left over from last Labor Day. Irridescent glitter was about $3, gold cord and stones were free (GT Warrior gave/bought it). Attached the leg pieces to the top - took about 2 hrs total. Few tries to get it right though.
This is my frist year wearing boots and I've got no regrets.
Boots: £15
Adhesive Spray: £2.50
Silver Spray Paint: £1.99
Silver Glitter: £8
Sequin strip at the top: £5
Braid: $10 (TT)
2 Butterflies from Afro Chic: $32(TT)
It took about 2hrs max to complete. I started the spray paint and glitter in London and finished of with the braid and butterflies in Trinidad. I also added the leg piece from the costume to the back of the boots.
I haven't got any experience doing up boots.. this was my first.
I like that blue and silver boot bad...Talk bout FAB!!
My heart is pleased, as footwear is part of the finishing look of the costume. It is nice to see a resurgence of decorated boots.
Yes for sure afro chic, the blue/silver is on a level of serious, serious mas. I can picture the body that grows out of those boots! It's baccahanal time, yes oui ;)
Wow! Such creativity. Now I have another question.... what is "braid"? Is it like a strip of material??
Jaded Teardrops
thanks AFRO CHIC and Dougla1 :-)
i need to get some premises in trinidad to do jus boots and the customized bras now lol!
Chris,
braid is basically a fancy trimming could be lurex or sequin encrusted but basically its a narrow trimming used to edge things
Love the decoration of that silver and blue boot, defintely some serious masquerader type boots there.
I love the style of the Kingfisher boots though.
hmmnnn...maybe i should go with boots for next year :)
