My first recollection of the ever popular sexy wire bra being worn on the streets of Port of Spain has to be with Nina Mc Kenzie of Legends who created quite a stir with the sight of her breasts titillatingly displayed for all and sundry to see. Some have even cited this incident as being the catalyst for the spilt between Big Mike and his partner Ian Mc Kenzie, whether that is true or not, the sexy wire bra has always drawn critics, detractors and supporters who either love it or hate it.

This uber sexy take on the already skimpy costumes in the bikini and beads genre has become a staple of some bands each year for Carnival, and while I personally see nothing wrong with the bra being worn on the right body type some have deemed this type of bra “un classy” and not an option for the standard of what certain bands want to portray. Looking at the argument against the bra I can see how it might be seen as just an excuse to go naked on the streets without adding any “creative value”, aping Rio, if you will. And while it is obvious that this type of costume is not suitable to every masquerader, the fear could be that masqueraders themselves may not use common sense and good judgment when choosing a costume to complement their natural assets. Not to mention many a “nipple slip” has been caught on camera, unsuspecting ladies without the hindsight to wear pasties, succumbing to a wardrobe malfunction under the glare of the media.

Though I will not choose a sexy wire bra as an option for Carnival (my bra cups runneth over way too much for it to even be a consideration!) I have seen it worn by masqueraders in several bands and on the right person with the right breasts, to me, it does not look vulgar and can look quite sexy; if you got it, flaunt it right? Who knows how long "it" will last! However, there are a few ladies who obviously choose this particular bra which is not suited to them. I have seen the wire bra looking painfully small, cutting into ladies skin and dare I say that some breasts are just not made for a bra held up by metal and jewels! This year I noticed several ladies in Island People’s King Fisher embellishing the wire bra with added fabric so that it gave the effect of nudity without being overtly so. Maybe this can be a happy compromise for those who desire the sexy wire bra and the skeptics who do not think it is classy enough for mas in Trinidad?
If the band of your choice were to offer the sexy wire bra as an option or alternative to the regular bra, will you be in favor of this, even though you may not choose this option for yourself? Do you think that the sexy wire bra is sexy or “skanky”? Does the potential of having masqueraders in the band wearing sexy wire bras diminish the “classiness” of the band? Thoughts!

If the band of my choice were to offer the sexy wire bra as an option or alternative to the regular bra i definitely will not choose it due to my breast size ..............i don't think that the wire bra will be able to hold up my D cup.
However if i was carrying around a B cup or so and had the right body and shape i most definitely would.
I think that the wire bra is sexy however if wore on the wrong breast and or body type it will appear to be vulgar in addition there would be certain rules to obey when wearing it for example pasties is a must.
I think it was in 2k7 i saw a young woman in the wire bra and thongs she was probably a 32B small waist petite figure and she decorated the costume slightly and accompanied it with boots decorated similar to the costume and she carried it fabulous.
I think once it's done right and looks good, gothrough hard.
Btw...I like the "labelling" of your pics.Easier to spot inappropriate usage. ;)
I think it looks perfectly fine with the right body type, i.e. a smaller cup size. But is it really comfortable to wear all day?
I think it's sexy and not skanky at all.
I do not think it diminishes the classiness of the band whatsoever, it actually adds diversity.
I would LOVE for Tribe to design a section with the wire bra option. The KingFisher from this year and Goddess and Defenders from last year are both sections I wished I was able to play in. I loved everything about that design using the cage bra.
Hopefully if Ms. Hordatt has moved over to Tribe, she will not be forced to muzzle her creative genius as Im sure many will appreciate her sexy wire bra.
My vote for cage bras: sexy and classy, if worn by the right body type
totally agree with you. when on the right body, with smaller boobs, I would say b cup, mayyyyybe c cup. I think of course the trick is for the breast area to be well decorated, bedazzled! etc! The wire bras do offer an enhanced look, appeal, sexuality but it's all to be done in moderation, on the right body, and with the breasts to compliment. The wire bra should enhance the overall costume and not detract.
I would have to agree with jamishness. I loved both of those creations from IP and would love to see the sexy 'cage bra' in Tribe this year, at least as an option.

Like the thong, the cage bra is a powerful tool that can be used for good as well as evil...LOL. I wouldn't mind playing in a band that displayed one but I probably wouldn't wear one myself. I do want to keep something to the imagination...LOL. But if a woman has the right shape and can wear it well, why not?
By no means are caged bras skanky! I find them rather sexy!
I was actually looking forward to playing in one although my girls are D cups (perky ones for now!) so I might as well do it while I still can. I shall be rather disappointed if it is not offered.

I am very curious to see if this 'design' can be transferred over to Tribe!! I am also wondering if that happens will she still use the cage bra for the section that she does for IP as well!!!! hmmmm....time will tell!!!

I don't think it's so much the bra being sexy or skanky, even though one's cup size does matter; it's more the concern of the PERSON who is wearing the bra, and the manner in which s/he carries him/herself. hq said it rightly when the comparison was made to the thong. Some people believe that skimpines is an unspoken liberation to act with zero class, and this is where the skeptics and critics being an uproar.
Cage bras are another evolutionary element of Carnival. I just hope that **ahem** certain individuals do not limit the creativity of designers who have seamlessly offered gorgeous costumes in the past that include this "barely there" option! :)

I'm gonna be mean and say it should not be optional.
Its nice to say "on the right body", but in reality you will get lots of wrong bodies and it will look naaaaaassty!
The band should know exactly who is goin to be wearing it.
Or at least have strict size restrictions and dont cater about who get vex.
Trini women sometimes have this "proud" way about them, where kill dem dead they will look sexy in anything.Too risky!

It's not skanky IMHO, it's an attempt to have nude mas like Rio. When worn right, sure, it can look sexy. (Small breasts, or implants) But like with many costumes, there's always some gyrls (who think they can pull it off) who should be wearing a tankini or in the least a corset option & shouldn't be wearing certain things (like thongs).
This particular bra style is totally sexy and once worn- as said- by the right size boobs it can be very sexy, and if we have the greatest show on earth we should have every sexy option available
