New Kids On The Block...

Trinidad Carnival 2009 will see three more new bands enter the arena; Elements, Kaotic and Spice. This is in addition to the new bands that debuted in 2008; Ronnie & Caro, Evolution, Wee International and D Krewe plus the bands already in existence such as Harts, Island People, Mc Farlane, TRIBE, Pulse 8, Dream Team, Legacy, Genesis, Masquerade, Trevor Wallace, Image Nation, and Trini Revellers. That makes a total of 19 fairly popular bands (medium and large category) that masqueraders will have to choose from. We all know some bands will have more success than others in attracting masqueraders with the popular large bands being the most sought after.

From what I have seen of teaser costumes from the new bands so far they are all attractive, some more spectacular than others, however, I know very well that basing a choice to play mas with a specific band over another going by costume only is not always a wise move; other factors should motivate potential masqueraders in choosing the right band for them.

I expect that all new bands would have hiccups; TRIBE reached the Savannah at night in their debut year of 2005 due to a route detour to avoid waiting behind massive band Poison, not to mention their costume distribution was a mess because the mas camp was too small. Island People suffered late costume distribution because costumes were stuck in China when they burst unto the scene in 2006. Pulse 8 had to scrap a whole section because “materials did not arrive on time” in 2007 and in 2008 both Evolution and D Krewe had problems with costumes being delivered to masqueraders on time. Most of us were willing to give these bands a second chance, sometimes third, because other areas made up for the shortcomings, even though it seemed as if some bands took much longer to get their act together than others. So, note to new bands, masqueraders are forgiving people, but that does not mean you should not try your best to give us all that our hard earned money pays for and what is promised when trying to lure us to play with you!

For me I would hope that in addition to having gorgeous costumes the new bands that want to make an impact might be willing to heed some of the following suggestions coming from me, an avid lover of mas:

  1. That costume prototypes displayed at the launch are what masqueraders get; no skimping on beads, sequins, baubles and feathers!
  2. Online registration and website services should be made available on time so that overseas masqueraders get the same priority for registration as those locally based.
  3. Prices are competitive, higher prices will not make your product more exclusive as you have NO history on which to sell the “experience”.
  4. Costumes get into the country on time (for those ordering costumes wholesale) and are distributed on the days they are supposed to be distributed and with ALL pieces intact.
  5. Road management is on point; lots of drinks, good flow of the band, adequate security.

Now some feedback is wanted from all you other masqueraders. If you decide to play with one of the new bands entering the Carnival arena what criteria would influence you to give them your support, and money, having no prior history to go by? What concerns do you have in playing with a new band and what assurances would you like to have to know that all that is promised is delivered and if not what compensation would be fair for a breach of this contract?

That costume prototypes displayed at the launch is what masqueraders get, nuff drinks, nuff security and nuff music..........so critical for me

but alot of bands that are all inclusive also offer meals and the meals should come to the band in a timely manner

about two or three years ago i got lunch at about fiveish....that was definitely not good

the other thing were lunch is concerned bands should announce what the menu is especially for vegetarians which they usually do but everyone as i know someone who is got a meal with about three items out of about that they cannot eat because of allergies

Hear hear Saucy! I agree 100%! I have been lucky: I played with Pulse 8 their first year and I thought their service & security was up to par, especially now since I have had an opportunity to play with other bands and compare.

I think new bands also must never forget the customer service aspect. A smile goes a long way in smoothing over accidents and mistakes. I hate to go to a mas camp where people are not pleasant and smiling and I do feel a sour mas camp impacts the quality of the mas!

The only thing that would make me try a new band or change bands is if a majority of my friends decide to move too. I don't mind playing by myself in a section, but I will not play by myself in a band! LOL

Service with a smile. Costumes aren’t cheap, and they must remember we are paying for an experience. So be nice.

The costume has to look like the one advertised or the costume should be refunded 30% of their deposit. That is only fair.

Food. Liaise with a GOOD chef that has experience of catering to 1000+. We are aware f black people timing, but when you come up with the food, COME CORRECT. Make it be worth the wait.

Costume distribution. Do not just set a date of costume collection. Please have a plan. This consists of costumes being paid at point A. Collected at point B and customers exiting through door C. No loitering.

I am not sure how these new proposals of’ inclusive and non-inclusive’ are going to work. But please make sure masqueraders are aware of the rules. I foresee trouble on di road.

When they advertise a fantastic goody bag, please let it be more than a bag of glitter and a sample pack of sun screen. (and I know it is not about the bag, but, hey we is Trini. We want to know besides de costume, we gettin something extra)

Have a bikini bra that FITS (aka the right size)!

I second the comment from xvx about the food. And please ensure it is ON TIME.

malicious jade i must endorse your comment of the bikini bra fitting issue. Please bands, ensure that the bra has the following:

=>Adjustable straps (TRIBE Titania ppl know about this.)
=>Comfortable underwire fit.
=>Safe, secure and sturdy clasp.
(we wouldn't mind a lil wonder bra...haha.)

2. Make sure that the food, is on time, on point and make sure they cut up the chicken so that we can easily eat it nah! Picking up a breast and yamming into it while a bess ting watching yuh is not cute!

3. Gimme a good goody bag....like IP own this yr...(2 bags AND an umbrella ella ella!!! doh make smoke!)

4. Please make sure what i see, is what i get, maybe more but nothing less.

5.make sure costume distribution is a pain free as possible, like IP and TRIBE( i went in d night 4 tribe, just b4 they closed up lol) and not like DKrewe (even playing with them in Trini revellers last yr, i was forced to wait 3 hours for them to bring my costume from some unknown location)

6. Make sure my costume sturdy, not falling off by 2 o'clock, please and thanks.

7. simple registration and perhaps sample belts and bras to get the correct size. make sure that sizing is as accurate as possible! and perhaps a diagramtic guide of how to measure properly for overseas and new time masqueraders, on site and internet.
