Carnival in Hindsight…..you can never be TOO prepared… stuff to add to the list for 2010.

With all my planning for Carnival 2009 there was really nothing that went amiss; I had a matching umbrella for my costume, Ziploc bag for the camera/cell phone and copious amounts of Fletch Dry powder were used since I knew it was going to be a rainy Carnival and prepared accordingly. If anything I was over prepared with my lists and obsession over every little detail. In any event there were just some things that I simply had no control over, even though I did have a remedy for the situation, like my tights getting a ghastly run! So for Carnival 2010 these are some tips that I only thought about AFTER the fact:

*In January of this year I had a minor accident and injured the instep of my right foot. Thankfully my boots were a whole size bigger so getting them on was not that difficult as my foot was still sore and for Carnival. However, on Carnival Monday night that very same foot started cramping me all sorts of evil; it was so bad that my toes were actually curling under! It was at that point I realized there was no muscle relaxant or any type of topical balm (such as Tiger Balm) to soothe the muscles in the house and I made a mental note to always have that on hand for the following year! I finally found a “Chinese Plaster” that my mother had given me and that worked in stopping the pain. So, make sure and have something on hand for leg cramps…adding that to the packing list!

*There had to be something with the super low cut bra tops this year and all the dangerously close opportunities for nipple slips that I saw! Although I have recommended pasties to women wearing the sexy or cage bra I think it would do most women well to invest in pasties regardless of the type if bikini tops you choose to wear. Pasties come in all styles and shades and if all else fails and you cannot get pasties, do like my friend and try some band aids on the nipples!

* In one of the TRIBE reviews someone complained about the unsanitary deodorants provided at the lunch stop. Though I did have the foresight to toss one of the mini sample deodorants I had gotten from visiting someone else’s mas camp in my husbands knapsack, not many people thought this might be necessary and believe me, IT WAS! 2010 make sure and walk with your own deodorant please as it was more than needed on the road for some people.

*I always walk with safety pins on the road, but I walk with one size, the small ones. Thank Goodness my friend walked with the jumbo sized pins as we used that to secure her wings when it was damaged after someone bounced her and ripped a part of the wing off in the process. One jumbo safety pin after and the wings were back in action! My pins also saved several other people on the road Carnival Tuesday; a must have I tell you.

*The one thing I missed greatly on the road was a mirror on Carnival Monday. I know some of you are going to laugh about that one, but trust me it was an essential that I totally forgot about. We had gotten a nice TRIBE mirror in 2008 that I walk with everywhere but it is lost now and I simply did not have one small enough to fit in my pouch. That meant I went mirror less all day Monday (oh the horror) and realized just how much I needed one! Carnival Tuesday I remedied the situation by getting a small mirror from out of a compact and that worked. Trust me, a mirror on the road is an essential for me.

And if you are wondering where on earth are you going to put all these things, let me list what I walked with in my Carnival Tuesday bag (I am still surprised all that stuff even fit!)

*Dentyne Ice Gum
*Clear Nailpolish
*Lip Gloss
*Small Mirror
*Small Black Opal Oil Blocking Powder
*Blotting Sheets
*Pins
*Mini Perfume
*Sample size pack of ADVIL liquid gels

The cell phone went in my boots !

What did you walk with on the road ? And, was there anything that you WISHED you had walked with or done that you didn't think about until after Carnival?

In my wristlet was: 1 small TRIBE mirror, lip gloss, small clear nail polish, phone, blotting sheets, 2 pantyliners,2 feminine wipes, varying sizes of moleskin and safety pins in varying sizes. Extra panty hose was in the hubby's back pack along with deodorant.

In my super cute handmade by moi bag I had my blotting sheets, Blistex lipbalm, lipgloss, camera and camera case (with ziplock bag), small safety pins, Aleve tablets and Wet Ones wipes in the singles packets.
I think that's it for my bag.

In my hubby's backpack I had my glasses case and contacts lens cases and solution.
I never walk with any deodorant for Carnival though, my deodorant lasts all day. :)

Oh! And my Sally Hansen nail colour pen in clear. Which I used on my sister in law whose stockings ripped after we crossed downtown on Tuesday.

gtwarrior said...

actually my deodorant last all day also but just in case. ;)

Hmmm...lemme seeee....I had glitter, sunblock, cellphone, pins, tylenol, panadol, cataflam, lip bam, lip gloss, tissue, wet one wipes. Everything in miniature sizes btw...Camera was with the bf.

Also I thought my pouch was safely latched unto my arm, but i guess not. Mid day carnival Monday, I dipped for my gloss and on the way putting it back, realised my pouch was gone :( with everything including my brand new Blackberry Bold!! I was devastated for about half hour, but it was too early in the thing to let it be spoiled...so i teeteevay like normal....

Until Ash Wednesday, my guy got a call, from the person who found my pouch and wanted to RETURN IT!! A mature couple found it, but the poor things didn't know how to operate the phone (take off the keypad lock), so he waited until Ash Wed to take it to the office for someone to open it, there they looked for the most dialled number and called it (my boo)...

I was very VERY lucky, not to mention i was last minute looking for a "me too" phone at home but couldn find one, and was forced to go with the berry,,,that eh happnin again..next time..."me too" for sure....

Yeah i think i had everything i needed,,,didn need anything else, but next year, some of them things cutting out, cus i did fine without them, without anything as a matter of fact :)

Well..i doh really like to walk with nothing. I find it such a bother! I have one of those wrist band thingy's used for ur cell phone, and that's it. This yr though, I palmed off my lip gloss on my sister (which I didn't even use mind u).

What I wish I had though was some blotting sheets. The rest I believe I can live without

lol at gtwarrior....i'll be emailing you SOON!

UMM, in my bag (which next year will be a wristlet) was my camera, phone, 2 pantyliners, 2 wipes, lipgloss, perfumed lotion, $200 TT, safety pins, extra face gems, spirit gum, compact, mac brush, small bath and body works hand sanitizer.

What I will carry next time around in my wristlet:

all those items, including the blotting sheets and nail polish, extra hose, a sheet a paper with all my Trini numbers in case i lose my phone that I will stick in my boots in case my wristlet breaks off or gets stolen.

Hopefully next year, God's willing, I will have my baby with me to hold all that shit in his backpack, so that my wristlet would just be light decoration with the essentials on one hand and DRINKS CUP in the other!

GTwARRIOR SAVED me with that ridiculous run I had in my hose when she saw me high as a kite lunch time...oo the memories lol

My husband carried a pouch with our stuff; camera, mini camcorder, phone, compact w/mirror, lipgloss, hairbrush, pantyliners, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, blotting sheets, gum, safety pins,advil..wish I had an umbrella!

Shellss - I had a 'me too' phone last year, I lost it at some point, some guy picked it up, phoned the last number (my friend who I was playing mas with) and said he would sell it back to me for $300!! I don't think he heard my reply through the laughter. He think I'm a fool?! It was too funny.
I have NEVER been to a single carnival anywhere without me or my friend losing a phone. Whatever bag I use, it escapes me! Been through so many of those me too phones.

From a clip on pouch (which did not match my costume, oh well :P ) ...no deodorant (my Tussy roll on is industrial strength and last just about 24hrs from a daily morning application, plus my pheromones are oderless and affective, alright ;) ), mobile phone (for use in Trini only), half pack size du Maurier, lighter, Canon Power Shot SD1000 (ultra compact), Opcon_A eye drops (better that Visine), Vaseline lip treatment, cash, ID, Fresh (I think)"chicklet" type gum, one condom (well, yuh never know when yuh just HAVE to make a water ballon, just for fun! ;) ), and oh yes, meh fren THONG! (she never collected it, all day, lol)

afro chic said...

Oh yes, I forget I had my cell phone in my bag as well. And the hubby had an extra pair of stockings in his bag for me.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

wow some of you all walked with more stuff than me by farrr lol. I forgot, I also had cash, not much though about $50.00TT.

Also in the hubby's knapsack was contact lens solution, sunblock and 2 extra pairs of tights.I changed one pair as SOON as I got my makeup done , but I was wearing two pairs anyway so when I got the second run much later in the day I just peeled off the first pair and was good to go until I got another small hole which the clear nail polish took care of, it was just too late in the day to change tights AGAIN.

I had safety pins, compact shine powder with a mirror, lip gloss, $100 ttd, blister plasters, mobile phone

The boyfriend was also made to carry $100 (in case I lost my pouch), camera, sunglasses case, a ziplock bag (for phone and camera in the rain), extra glitter (glitter somehow never stays on me!), granola bars (I'm super fussy and I was happy for those bars cuz I didn't like the lunch food), miniture bottle of contact solution, spare pair of contacts, miniture spray deoderant and compact pack of wet wipes.

On Carnival Monday I wore sneakers and my feet were so comfortable that I decided to leave the shoes in a friend's car so that if my Tuesday boots started to hurt too much I could change them when we reached close to Arapita Avenue judging point (her car was parked in the area).

I didn't need them but it was a just in case.

I wish I had carried that two way tape for sticking my bra on to my boobies, cuz they were threathening to pop out. A friend of a friend had some of this clear boobie tape that saved me :)

My wristlet contained safety pins (various sizes), shoelaces (come in handy to replace broken bra-clasps, etc), phone, camera, lip-gloss and some 'vex-money'. And my sweetie carried a sunblock stick.

The only thing missing was a mirror, but I didn't have one small enough. Makeup stayed perfect all day, so I didn't really need it, but if I find a tiny one, I'll be sure to throw it in my bag next year.

In little Digicel zip/coin purse: ID, $100 bill, mini sunblock from goodie bag, Advil in prescription envelope, 2 band aids, gum, chapstick/lipstick and phone. Camera was in its own case. Sis had blotting sheets with her.

Next yr in addition to items that I had this yr: pins (this is the 1st yr i didn't walk with or need 'em), mini mirror, mini deodorant, hand sanitizer/wipes and clear nail polish.

I think next yr I'll borrow the concept of wearing two tights.

silverpatronus said...

i carried the little tribe phone pouch thing that fit my finger perfectly like a ring. so i wore that on my finger with my phone. c'est tout. my bf carried my eye drops, spray sunblock and a nail file for me. i needs nada mas, so next year will be the same.

Island Soul said...

The only thing i carried that others haven't already listed were spare battery and xD card for my camera.

My camera however does not go in my bag. It's on my arm in a modified sport iPod case that I decorate to match the costume. That way it's always right there when i want to take a pic - no digging in a bag (or asking the man bag) for it. Just pop it off my arm and shoot, then clip it right back so it's outta my way for serious wining.

afro chic said...

Nail file?! das a deadly weapon these days yuh know!

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

LOL Island Soul hubby walked with spare battery as well but my card has loads of space so didn't need to walk with any extra.

silverpatronus said...

afro chic, i had one of those emery board ones, not the metal file.

Trini Orisha Gyal said...

IS I Loved your little decorated camera case on your arm! I thought that was ingenious.

I had:
various size safety pins
small mirror
contact case solution
ziplock for camera and phone
umbrellla to match my costume
fletch dry powder
immodium, andrews, and alleve
neutrogena spray on sunblock
wet wipes
hand sanitizer

I forgot blotting sheets, which i had, but forgot to put in the bag. I did not carry a bag for carnival. I found a black polo man type bag in Ross for cheap. I spray painted it silver when I decorated my boots, and my husband carried this bag all day, so I was hands free. LOL. Husbands... the best bag for carnival!

In addition to what every one else said I had an extra pair of sunglasses because I lost mine early on Monday. I wish I had small scissors because in all the drama i forgot to cut my gel insoles from under my toes so my big toe on one foot was hurting. Even though my boots on both days were a size bigger as a matter of fact I removed the insoles by lunch on Tuesday. If I had scissors I would have just cut them. I never play mas with out extra deodorant in tow. I did not need it because I used degree clinical strength which is my new favorite but i still never play mas with out extra....

I had a box of tampons because Mother Nature is a sick twisted wicked woman that was stuck in the cold so she put her spiteful eye on me Carnival Monday afternoon : (

Oh I also had: cell, my contact list, $200 TT, Aleve, rag, panty liners & wipes, lipgloss and balm, compact powder w/mirror. Camera has it's own water proof case.

Anonymous said...

I think some of us (me included) need to start walking with a rolling suitcase (lol)...

afro chic said...

I agree trini, I need to walk with a pair of scissors next year, like the type from those manicure sets.

I had to find a pair of scissors to cut my tshirt on Monday and then on Tuesday I had to cut the strips of fabric hangin from my belt cause it was rubbing between my legs.

Carnival Dude said...

ok here's what i walked with.

Safety pins (5 small.. 5 big)
small bottle of magna tack ( for on d road repairs)
1/4 lb glitter (gold) yes it's alot.. but it was for me and about 4 other ppl

assortment of gems
Spirit gum.... (the above two came in VERY handy to replace some of the gems that came loose)
Sample size deodorant
tin of eclipse peppermint mints
contacts case and solution
imodium AD
Asprin

I taped $100 vex money to the inside of my boots..( in the unlikely event i got robbed)

camera was on my wrist..
cup around my neck
and cellphone was stuck in my tights.( if you are doing this , please use an old phone as the sweat can damage the phone, which is what i did.... it may seem a weird place to put your phone, but for me it's very secure in there while jumping)

Also i wrote down an incase of emergency note and taped it to the inside of my bag:

Incase of emergency:
Please contact.......(name) ....(number)...(relation)
Food allergies
Medical conditions
Medical allergies
My Name, Age, blood type.

Malicious Jade said...

Kris, I am loving the in-case of emergency information. Will remember to put on Blood type.

Ok, I will do two things - state what I had in my Carnival bags *yes bags cause I had no MAN BAG this year* and will post on Chrisnival, an excellcent way of creating a mini medical kit for the road.

As you know, I was sick for Carnival (What an Experience), so I had a few extra stuff, just in case.

In my MIMI created pouch "Thanks MIMI" -
Disposable camera
Bounty sheets
Mini Shimmer powder with mirror - Definitely having this next year!
Extra mini pack of glitter
Gum

In my MIMI created LARGE Gold Bag -
Mini Umbrella - VERY annoying - and still was too big for de bag!
Mini purse with $60.00 in broken up change
Zip lock bag with Phone
Extra Disposable Camera
Mini 50+ Sunblock
SPF 15 Lip gloss
Purell Mini Hand Sanitizer
Mini bottle of Alcolado (YES YOU READ RIGHT)
In case of Emergency mini paper with name and No. of person
Extra Tissue

Mini Medical Bag that contained:
Safety pins - Large and Small - GREATLY USED on Tuesday!
Hair Clips
Band Aids
Sample pack of Panadol
Gravol - 6 tablets
Sample pack of Imodem
Mini Antibiotic Ointment
Sample pack of Sports Balm
Antiseptic towelette
2 Power Mints

In my hand - a cup - To be revised next year.

In the end, the pouch held all the stuff that started to fall off the costume and de umbrella buss me bag.

For next year, I would like to eliminate the disposable cameras and get a really good slim line, 12 pix. camera and will get a SMALLER umbrella. However, I remember seeing someone with a fold up tight garbage bag with three holes for head and arms to cover the body in case of rain. That is extreme but if it works, VIVA la Garbage Bag! LOL

Would make my Carnival cup and ensure it is clip on or string on next year.

LOL wow, DAM LOOK at STUFF!

I took a big risk: I didn't cary anything! not even my phone.. no camera.. I decided that there's always someone u can borrow a phone from, and there always someone who'll take a nice picture of you! and i found photos of myself on most carnival websites!
All I wore was my cup, no extra make up (and my great make up lasted ALL DAY!), I don't wear tights, if i needed napking: then the food truck could provide.. I felt FREEEEE!! and had the best time ever! I remember being stressed with my pouch the previous years (is it going to open while i'm jamming, is anybody going to try to steal it from me,what if it rains...) I won't change a thing next year!

Island Soul said...

buh aye Saucy yuh know dem cards can crash just like a hard drive and den what??? LOL Seriously, some ppl even recommend that you change cards periodically so as not to have ALL your memories one card should it fail before you can download. I too have very large cards but once a girl scout always a girl scout ;)

Unknown said...

Saucy, I know you have already thought of this but, can you put the link to this post in the side like you did for the carnival "make up tips" ones because next year closer to carnival I want to come through and read this one again...thanks

DQ said...

Wow Malicious Jade..how did u tote all dat stuff? My word!!

kimaspeak.blogspot.com said...

Y'all Trini people take these ting serious boi! I have been reading Saucy's blog for the last year and now I am coming down to Trini for my annointing next Year. Finally!

Now I play mas since I was a kid (2 years old Queen of Carnival) in Grenada, and the fun of it to me is bacchanal.. I dont walk wid nutting!!! Except some money in me shoe... me fadda ha me keys and me camera...somehow I does never want to peepee, and even if I do I run behind ah ole house an do my business.. i aint have time to study all dis cause my HEAD BAD! I take all de nice pics on de lawn and before mas start.. yu ent want to see me during de carnival cause its not pretty! My mum does work magic wid my costume- whole sunday night before we go Dimanche Gras (she is an angel, I get it from her), she add extra velcro, extra heavy duty glue and stich up things that looks like it coming out with needle and thread. And she so sweet when I come back aching Monday night, she would wash what could wash and run through dryer leave the rest to air out and do the same again.. and add extra feathers and beads. Lol. Plus she walk with big safety pins on the road so when she see me is tacking an ting.. but usually thats enough.

I spray down wid deodorant.. and I mean three times the amount I usually put- no perfume (no stink n sweet business), spray sunscreen, nuff lip balm, me sunglasses and I ready to go for the whole day. Any drinks I buy is in a bottle that I could mix me rum wid. DAIZ all I need. ;)

I do me own makeup (practice de day before), I dont wear jewels, I just bring down loads of extra accessories in the same colour as my costume and customise, no big tra la la, is just mas!!! If de tights run it run, if costume break it break we.

Shellss said...

lol @ City Chick..."I take all de nice pics on de lawn and before mas start.. yu ent want to see me during de carnival cause its not pretty!"..hahahahahha..i like you.....when i lost my kit bright and early Monday,,,,i realise i doh need any of them things to survive....lol...Tuesday i had a phone and money in my boots...that was it...next yr will be the same!
