TRIBE Feedback

Dear TRIBE,
Thank you for a great Carnival 2009. I absolutely loved my costume, best one I have ever worn to date and my time on the road was quite enjoyable. Although my Carnival experience ranks pretty high compared to other years I do have a few comments and suggestions to make in areas that I believe can be improved upon for 2010.

TLC Card:
This system simply needs to be scrapped and redone! One blog reader had a good suggestion to an alternative which I will share with you:

Tribe needing to revise there Loyalty card process.

The fact that some people have had their cards since day one, but have not played with the band since does not work and cheats the real masqueraders who are on the road every year. I know of people that buy their costume every year and sell it again for a profit. This practice will never end and will only get worse as the band gets older and more popular (if TRIBE getting more popular then they already are is even possible).

I’m not against the loyalty system at all as I think it’s a great way of rewarding masqueraders that join every year I just think it needs to be revised

I think TRIBE should formulate a points system that would reward the actual people that play mas on the road. The following is a potential example:

Play mas on Monday 0.5 pt
Play mas on Tuesday 1 pt
Front line 1 extra pts
Individual Costume 3 pt extra pts
Pay costume in full in advance 0.25 pt

Registration will then be set up in a tier system. People with 10-15 points register first. People with 5-10 pts register second, then 4 pts, 3 pts, 2 pts and so on. This tier system will be changed every year as some loyal Tribers get more and more points. Although this won’t eliminate people buying and reselling there costume completely, it will greatly reduce it because I guarantee the people with higher points are not the ones reselling there costume because they are the ones playing each year. This system will eventually weed out the people that have not played in years and are only looking to make a dollar on the true masqueraders each year.

This also makes it fair for those that do play every year and for some reason can’t make it one year, if they have banked 10 pts, they don’t have to worry about missing one year because there previous loyalty will still be seen with there number of points.

I know this will upset a lot of TLC card holders, but I think the true loyal customers (those that play year after year with or without a TLC card) will appreciate it and really benefit from it.
This is just ONE idea for revamping the TLC but whatever you do the system has never worked and loyal masqueraders need some REAL rewards and priority in getting registered.

Photographer for booklet and website:
The best years for photographs were 2005 and 2006 when the costumes were shot outdoors with natural light and masqueraders could actually see the costume properly. This year the photographs were photoshopped to death which resulted in masqueraders expecting the section Pheasant to be BRONZE when it was actually gold, not to mention the back of Spangled Cotinga was never shown on the website. Please forgo the fancy photographers, this is not a high fashion magazine spread, and just give us the costume photographed to show the true colours and from all angles.

Costume Construction:
Overall I was pleased with my costume but I had to do too many repairs to it myself. For instance I had to come up with a solution to fix the tail which was supposed to be worn tied to the body. If I could figure out that something more secure as Velcro could be used then there is no excuse for someone in production not realizing the fact that the tail was not secure with just ribbon. Also, the construction on the tail was not up to par, again I had to reinforce where feathers were joined because the workmanship was sloppy and rushed. Also I received two LEFT side foot pieces, an error which simply should not have occurred if someone had ensured that the costumes were ready for distribution properly.

The Bra Issue:
Every year I complain about the GRANNY bras that are given to size D cups and over and once again I am complaining again even though I solved that issue myself and supplied you with my own bra. Freya swimsuits are for size D cups and up I suggest taking a pattern from a balconet bikini top and advise the local bra manufacturer that they can experiment with some new shapes to get rid of that dreaded ugly GRANNY bra. Short of that I suggest sending your bras to be decorated in China like African Love Bird which did not have any issues with ugly granny bras! As a matter of fact, that entire costume was well constructed so as much as I do not like the idea of China production it might also help you with the aforementioned issue of costume construction as well.

Band Size:
2009 was supposed to be the year that the band was reduced to a more “intimate” size… that simply did not happen. The band was as big as 2008. I commend you on handling the number of people better than last year but in certain areas the crowd was just too overwhelming. Adding to the problem was the fact that all three of your hot DJ trucks were all congested in the center of the band causing a crush of masqueraders/DJ groupies to crowd the area. Please, please, please reduce the size of the band for 2010! If this means raising costume prices for 2010 so that the band will have less people sad to say I will vote for that as well, anything to keep the band to an enjoyable and comfortable size.

Music:
An idea to get the DJ groupies away from the popular trucks is to synchronize the music throughout the band so each truck will be playing the same thing all day. Therefore there will be no “hot truck” and no need for masqueraders to crowd one area of the band.

Alternately you can also consider linking the top three DJs like JW/Blaze 96.7, Hypa Hoppa and Xcaliber, two trucks each, so that’s 6 music trucks all with the “hot DJS”.

Get the faces of those sound systems (JW, Hoppy and whoever is the man for Xcaliber) to share face time at the different trucks to satisfy the groupies hoping the DJS will notice them .So if all six trucks play the right music and the hype men do some roaming spending a little time on each truck, then the crowd will be roaming happily too, and the groupies will follow Jason and Hoppy and make some room for the music lovers too!

Lunch Stop:
More blankets, more mats, more umbrellas and more tents are needed PLEASE; so many conflicts arose over masqueraders hoarding blankets it was ridiculous! Others complained about the lunch stop being too small however if the band is smaller next year this will not be an issue as I actually like the location of the lunch stop and I arrived early so securing a space was not a problem personally. We absolutely need more toilets at the lunch stop as well

Theme for 2010:
I know at this point it is a toss up between Space or doing an Asian theme which was the original idea until you heard another band will be doing a similar sounding theme. Listen, Space is ok and all but I just cannot see cute costumes from a Space theme. I absolutely vote in favour of the Asian theme and think the costumes will be awesome if you decide to take that road. Remember that this year was the BEST in terms of costumes; TRIBE blew all other bands out the water when it comes to presentation on the road, and the costumes were spectacular. Therefore the quality of costume design has to remain the same or get better for 2010 as your masqueraders have now come to love the feathers and beads; the costume is no longer complimentary! So please reconsider Space and definitely go with the Asian theme.

*Vote on the poll (under the countdown clock) for the theme you want!

Once again thanks for a great Carnival 2009 and I am looking forward to 2010 and an even better experience with TRIBE.

And for those of you who want to send your feedback to TRIBE email: info@carnivaltribe.com or visit the website and use the "CONTACT US" form.

I agree with all the points made here EXCEPT that there should b a price raise in costumes. In this recesssion time?!!!? I think not.

In my opinion, playing mas is becoming more and more complicated.

I am a TLC holder and I must admit I benefit from it, however, I have friends and family who live abroad and as of the experience this year, we could not play together as they are not TLC holders and got caught up in the mad rush when registration was open to the public.

I totally agree with the revision of the TLC issue because I personally know persons with cards that sell their costumes to non card holders and get profits for them while there are persons who genuinely want to play with the band and can't.

Excellent review. However, Tribe is a business so they want to make a profit, in order to do so and not raise prices they can not reduce the size of the band too much. Personally I cannot afford to pay too much more for my mas. Synchronizing the music trucks would ruin the experience for me. I like that if I do not like the vibe or the music being played by a certain truck I can move to another section.
I thought Tribe did a GREAT job this year. Except I am tall and even I had a problem with the height of the drinks truck. Me nearly 6 feet had to ask men to get me drinks...that was not good...LOL

Niquie said...

1. Yes, the TLC issue should be addressed, finding an alternative to it would be great. But i do not think it is fair to have a point system, neither practical.
2. The music trucks need to stay how they are. No syncronization is necessary. I love the fact that I can move around when i am not feeling the vibe from another truck. God knows I would die if i had to listen to the same nonsense all though the band. An issue like yours is simple, if you think there are too many ppl by a particular truck, find one that is comfortable for you.

3. Never the less, I do agree with the bra issue (plz fix that granny problem), and the band needs to be reduced.
4. I think that there is a lot that you can do with a Space theme actually. I would love to see what they come up with...unlike the Asian theme, which i think is unoriginal and overdone.

Well written review.

The band size does need to reduce, it just got too big. May need to defntely revamp the TLC system and better rewarcd masqueraders who've played more often..not sure how, but it's needed.
As for the music thing, maybe spreading out the 'hot' trucks a lil more may work. I personally just roam till I get to a truck that's good, and I move on when I get fed up hearing what they're playing. Synchronising may be an option, but then u get the problem of if sucky music is played there's no getting away from it.
Not all the bar trucks were too high but those that were, were ridiculously high. Some were quite low and perfect...wish i made note of the numbers on those.

The bra issue: i didn't have a problem at all. But then again i'm not a D cup. I played in ALB and as the other bloggers mentioned there were no 'granny' style bras...every bra was decorated the same and each looked spectacular. If it means that bras etc have to be sent China to get such workmanship and care to detail, then do it. Masqueraders were impressed by what was done.

Theme: well I don't much care about theme, but since each year somme band has done an Asian influenced them of some sort it may be time to head somewhere different. I love my sci-fi but as good as my imagination is I'm finding it hard to stretch it around space as a Carnival theme. Rio sounding good thouogh LOL

Shellss said...

I agree with Niquie regarding the space theme, at first all I could see was something linked to Star trek or something of the sort, but with some creativity I think it can work (maybe using planets or something eg. sun, milkyway, etc.)

I can't wait to see what they come up with!

OK I agree on a couple of points (based on last year not this year) like the bras - one of my friends was given a 'granny' bra and she was really unhappy. we went back and complained and tribe swapped it for a normal styled bra - but still in her size!!
TLC cards - i find the current system does not work and is unfair. It is a Tribe Loyalty Card - I missed carnival this year because I had exams, so I have lost my TLC card. I didn't play mas with another band, I am no less loyal to tribe! i have ALREADY booked my flights to carnival 2010!
OK i do NOT agree with:
-music syncing - i think its good to wander around the band and have different vibes and different music!
-theme - i think a space theme is fine! i am not imagining sci-fi at all. it will be a test of tribe's creativity!
-price - due to the exchange rate, tribe have pretty much prices all british people out of the band. any increase would lead to all british people jumping with someone else i think!

Carnival is for everyone.

Not just the chosen few.

(yes - I am TLC as well. Doesnt make me better/more privileged than anyone else!)

i do see plenty potential with the space theme: i am thinking stars wrapped around wrists as arm pieces, an ode to the milky way(maybe a beige, gold section???), the sun, big/little dipper, blast off, etc

i was unable to make carnival this year, and i didn't sell my costume...a testament to my loyalty to tribe

TLC is a system introduced by TRIBE to reward their loyal masqueraders so clearly they wanted to give those "chosen" people priority. My issue is that it does not work. carnival is for everyone but TRIBE isn't. And I am not speaking as if it is MY band ie I own it but I am speaking just from what TRIBE themselves have shown with the TLC Card.If the band was all inclusive and open to everyone there would be no need for a TLC right? We would all line up or wait to register online on a first come first service... well those of us without a hook up that is.

There are many Asian themes done in the past very few done right!!! There are a lot of creative costumes one can do with the Asian theme. The space theme.. I am thinking too superficial, too many costumes that can just have a name and then "creative interpretation".

As for pricing, please! People were selling and buying TRIBE costumes at 100% the cost on Carnival Junction and Fineahban so there are people who are willing to pay for the experience!! Don't think the bands are not paying attention to that. Not to mention the new bands priced themselves on the SAME scale as TRIBE!

And since my cosutme cost the same for the past two years I am expecting an increase in 2010. I will take a price increase and less people in TRIBE because as far as I am hearing EVERYBODY and their cousin, sister, brother and friend will be in TRIBE for 2010..if that is the case I will find a next band because I am not going down the Poison route and having to jostle for space on the road in my cosutme.

Triniaries said...

My only issue is the TLC code. Did not play this year but have played with "Pleasure Carnival" now Tribe since the Poison days so reintroducing a system that penalizes me for not playing this year or any other due to the economy or personal issues seems a bit unfair.

As for theme, uhm, space theme....I'd like to think they have a few ides already to even think of going in that direction. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

The TLC is a rewards card just like any other; frequent flyer, subway, VISA points etc. The more you use it the faster you get rewards. If you don't play mas (for whatever reason) you cannot expect a "reward" for that year. Again not MY rules but if the TLC is to be used as a fair rewards system people cannot be holding on to past loyalties you have to continue patronizing the band to get rewards.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

p.s. remeber to send your feedback to TRIBE you do not have to agree with anything I said but let them know your thoughts as well.

I personally think the TLC should just be scrapped and a new system put in place or just allow committee members to register their people and call that George. I guarantee the band will be sold out on that token before registration is even open to the public.

DQ said...

'People were selling and buying TRIBE costumes at 100% the cost on Carnival Junction and Fineahban so there are people who are willing to pay for the experience!!' That's quite true Saucy, all I'm saying is that their a many loyal TRIBE masqueraders like myself who make a huge sacrifice to play mas ever year. I do not think that it is fear to us to be raising costume prices every year. I am happy that your costume price was the same as last year, mine was not. Granted the fact that the price did not raise my much (approx. $400) it did raise! I just got a basic costume this year for the price that I did last yr with the wings option.

I very much appreciated the fact that TRIBE's prices weren't ridiculous this year. The only point I'm making is that I do not think that it is fair to exclude ppl from a band by raising prices. TRIBE is NOT solely for the elite and very rich. I love Carnival and TRIBE just like the rest of us.

After reading all of this, I realized that Tribe has just as many problems as IP does. Good luck!

Billy Mathis, Realtor said...

My only suggestion for the TLC system would be for Tribe to open a new block of numbers for past masqueraders who have yet to secure one. They could call them "2nd Generation" numbers or whatever, and this would still allow those "1st Generation" card holders first dibs on costume registration, as well as lower ticket prices for various events, or for anything else Tribe wished to reward its past participants with.

I would also encourage them to track card users in terms of their costume registrations from year to year...this is nothing more than an extra block in their registration database. Unused numbers would "age" out after 3 or 4 years...not hard to manage at all. Of course this won't stop those who purchase then sell their costumes, but that opportunistic "element" will be present NO MATTER WHAT you do.

I plan to send these suggestions to Tribe, as I played this year for the 1st time and truly enjoyed the experience (in comparison to Poison and IP). Only by DUMB luck was I able to secure a costume (via online registration), and I would like (at least some degree of) preference when attempting to register for 2010 - a 2nd Generation TLC number would work out great, while not imposing on those (TLC holders) who have come before me.

Love the blog Saucy...the wife and I are big fans!!!

If by problems one means that there are too many people clamouring to get into the band because of the product, service and the experience being sold and there is not an equitable way to reward those persons playing religiously from the start…then yes Tribe has problems like anyone else.
I agree wholeheartedly that the TLC system should be either completely revamped or even done away with entirely...as it currently stands it is providing very little real benefit (aside from the fete tickets) - with the right hook-up one can get into the band without a TLC even b4 registration starts and those who have played for all 5 years get no additional benefit for their loyalty. My main concern is that the cost to effectively administer a proper loyalty system has got to be huge. The only way (in my opinion) for the points system highlighted to work is for the registration system to allow persons access to it based upon their total no. of points, they would then be allocated a registration time and from that time going forward they would have access to the system. Much like online and phone registration for classes at university. That sort of thing doesn’t come cheap…given last year’s ‘early registration period’ I don’t think we will see a re-vamping of the TLC system any time soon…as the group that Tribe most cares about were all but taken care of during this period. So, is there any really fair way to deal with the situation???

I think either theme has lots of potential, though as a fan of a huge headpiece full of feathers…not too sure how space going to deliver that.

I didn’t receive a granny bra for my 34D BOP bra, I would however like if it’s supposed to be a 34D that it’s actually that, because I’m a 34C (always get a larger size just in case) and I was all but busting out. Plus I picked BOP because it was supposed to be a ‘real’ bra, which it wasn’t.

I like the music just as it is…I’m not a DJ groupie…so if everyone want to be behind 3 trucks I say let them go. Even if my section is one of those stuck in the jam near those trucks, I will be somewhere else!!

Adventures of Jaime said...

I disagree with the "Granny bra" comment, especially in regards to African Lovebird...I got a size D and it was HUGE! It made my boobs look like they were hanging down over my stomach, and my boobs only filled like half the bra.

dougla_1 said...

Wheyyy, Jaime, that was a serious miscalculation! lol

HQ said...

Patty, Tribe's "issues" exist because everyone wants to play with them, because they are models of efficiency and they give you a real good time on the road!

On the TLC: I think that the system needs to be tiered: the people who played with Tribe their first year and those who believed in Tribe when they were still a lil itty bitty section should get a reward, but also those who actually play in their costumes year after year should get a reward too.

I just hope that the band doesn't get any larger than this year....it really did make the experience uncomfortable at times....

Oh & no synchronising the DJ trucks pls! I need to know that I can hear my old school with truck 1 and hypa with 4 etc. Tribe wouldn't be as fun if all the trucks play the same thing. If they correct the line up so that the 3 most popular trucks aren't bulged in the middle then things are cool.

(BTW the face of Xcalibur is Dawg E Slaughter. LOL)

I kinda understand the frustration and flaws in the current TLC system.

And there are probably a million ways to address the problem.

I just can't see how it will benefit Tribe to go through the hassle - when from a business point of view, the band will sell out regardless, and their people will be sorted regardless.

HQ said...

Another thought: I think this TLC and these issues with the size are a question of what does Tribe itself want to be? Do they want to capitalize on their popularity, milk the cow and get as much $$ as possible? Or do they want to establish longevity and stay in the game as long as they possibly can? only Tribe can answer that question.

TriniVice said...

lol @ patty..its the truth...everyone has their problems..and masqueraders will be loyal to their chosen band regardless bc at the end of the day (carnival tues lol) u'll ask urselves 3 questions..did u love ur costume, did u have a time, and will u be on the road next year to do it again..and if its yes to all then come band launchin season everyone will race to register with the band that gave them a great time some months prior..tlc issues excessive crowds(tribe), long stressful costume pickups and stormers on the road(IP) etc..so y stress over it..I say we just count the days til we can see what pretty costumes we'll have to choose from for 2k10 :)

Please permit me to share my two cents:

TRIBE LOYALTY CARD (TLC)

As part of our customer loyalty program, persons who have registered for costume with TRIBE are eligible to apply for a TRIBE LOYALTY CARD (TLC).

TLC holders are entitled to:
# Priority Registration
# Special priced tickets to TRIBE Events.
# Specials offers/discounts at selected TRIBE affiliates.
# Invitations to exclusive events...and more.

I took that off Tribe's website and it says two things to me:
1) The TLC was NEVER meant to establish a hierarchy within the band itself. It was a means of giving past masqueraders access to rewards that non-masqueraders wouldn't have.
2)The fact that they used "eligible to apply" versus "eligible to receive" leads me to believe that Tribe has realized that there needs to be a cut off in the # of TLCs distributed.

Further under the TLC information brief, it says that allowing TLC holders to register first was Tribe's attempt at keeping the band at a manageable size. Basically, the idea was to give past TLC masqueraders preference in getting into the band.

My point is that the TLC is doing EXACTLY what it was intended to do. The problem is that Tribe is now so popular that even we TLC holders have started to turn against each other because we feel our space in the band is in jeopardy.

Let us face it, TLC or not as Saucy herself always says, "EVERYONE CANNOT BE IN TRIBE", but people don't want to hear that. We don't want the band to end up like Poison, but at the same time everyone and their uncle has some method they think Tribe should implement. The thing is that the method is usually aimed at securing THEIR space in the band, rather than promoting Tribe's actual policy, which in all fairness, Tribe has stuck to and not changed.

Pre-registration, reservation of costumes, having a link etc..all these things have been taking place for YEARS and in EVERY band, yet people went into an angry frenzy around August because as far as they were concerned, every person who preregistered was a threat to their potential spot in "THE PRECIOUS". I saw people who never even played in Tribe about to pop a blood vessel in distress lmao

At the end of the day just accept that Tribe cannot accommodate everyone and move early if you want to get into the band. How many TLC holders who wanted to play and made themselves available to register somehow can say that they didn't get a spot because some newbie took it? Just like the Black Friday sales, if you know you want that 42" plasma TV for $300USD, make sure your behind is at the store bright and early so you get what you went for! Don't go late and then say the store should come up with a policy that ensures you get a TV next year :D

there are a couple of points i disagree with Saucy, the bra in my opinion was fine. I'm a D cup and while you may think it was a "granny bra", i certainly loved the fact that my bra gave me coverage and didn't have my bubbies outta road on Tuesday, lol. nothing like good support and it was beautiful to boot!

as for the DJs... synchronizing the the music on thr trucks would make for a very boring mas. people like the variety and it's just that simple. i don't want to hear an entire band playing the same song on 3 trucks... for that i could just chip down the road with my Ipod in my ears, lol.

unless Tribe moves the lunch spot to another area entirely... the issues with seating and space will continue. the band is large, everyone needs to learn to accomodate their fellow masqueraders and not hog space. as for raising the prices to accomodate a smaller band... this is a recession, and that idea is just the type of "separatist" thinking that I doubt Tribe wants to adopt (at least i should hope so).

either way, i had a ball this year and will be back with Tribe next year. Tribe in de air!!

Excellent 2 cents Ennekaysee and Saucy. If persons can't afford a price increase, then apparently they scraping up to play with the band in the first place. Its simple, reduce the band and increase the price. Now facts are facts, the pre-registration alone almost sold out certain sections of Tribe for this year. The TLC System is just like a medium of hope, that you may get the opportunity to play with the band, because if someone else has a "link" (as 99% do), your TLC card is boo. Ok everyone want a revamp of the TLC system, no problem, pay for it annually just like a credit card and accept rewards when you register with the band or attend events. Adios.,.,.,

Excellent review.... I see the polls are looking at Rio for 2010... Its all well and good... eye candy for the men. But what about the men... not every guy has a body to die for.. and u know that male costumes are usually basic.. i think that TRIBE needs to do something about that. They tried this year.. I loved me honey creeper costume... but if it goes Rio.. i will be naked.. which i dont mind, but other may not like it.. what shuld they do ?

Brilliant ennekaycee. Argument on TLC done! ;)

Look nah, I don't even have a TLC and I have played with TRIBE two years straight. If I don't get in 2010(which I safely doubt), I can always get an "authentic" ID band and I am in the band, right? But really and truely, with the SPECIAL FORCES goon squad TRIBE had this year, they will be ready for next years stormers (and those not in dey section) with more zest. But there is always meh CIA contacts to get in the band "legally"!!! I good ;)

And for the record, AM NOT DRUNK!

With so many varying views and ideas it seems like Tribe may have to design 2 carnival bands……Let’s say it’s like Toyota having its luxury line which carries the Lexus name and its regular line that carries the Toyota label. For those who could afford the extras and the exclusiveness of Tribe’s Lexus line more power to you…..for the rest of the masses you’re in for Corolla or Camry. Seriously though, it’s what businesses do to differentiate products/services while maintaining market share and maximizing profits. This I know is a whole different approach and may be a logistical nightmare (allocating resources, deciding what services will be provided to which group etc.). Maybe a Tribe and a Tribe2 is worth exploring! I would also keep the Tribe name and use of same designers so ppl wouldn't think of the split as a breakaway. Incidentally though, I still imagine a large number of people willing and able to pay the extra for the luxury. Anyway, I had me a ball again this year with Tribe and rather mention the few annoyances I experienced I thought I would try to bring a solution (let’s just call consulting services).

I've played with IP for 4 years straight and I've never had a problem with picking up my costume or my experiences on the road. I'm not comparing the problems that Tribe is experiencing vs. IP. I'm simply saying that there are many people who play with Tribe year after year and when you ask them how it was, "it was the best...there were no problems" and I'm just saying that it is good to hear an unbiased opinion. This was my first year with IP where I had a complaint and it was because of the security leaving the band when we left the Savannah. And I was looking to read the comments on those that played with Tribe to see if it is a band that I would play with next year. Tribe's issues aren't major and can be adjusted, but I highly doubt that they will lessen the amount of masqueraders in the band to accomodate the few that see that see it as an issue. At the end of the day, this is a business and if people are willing to pay the money to play mas in the band, then I see no problem with what they are doing. What they need to do is provide more music trucks, restrooms, and a larger resting stop to please the many masqueraders who love to play with Tribe year after year. They have a good reputation, and I'm sure that they will hear your cries of concern. Have a great weekend!

Candice said...

RWB I totally agree wit u.

After what I hear every yr about tribe an ip, they will never get my money. They are not goin to downsize to please allyuh, so stop dreaming. I not spending over $5000 to go home and fix nothing. Money talks an bull $hit walks, as far as they concern, idiots like u will complain an give them money yr after yr, so y change anything.

I had no problems for carnival, plenty room to move, drinks (never ran out), food and snacks comin to me, not d other way around. Backline haters in all bands, surprisingly in my section, section members was very respectful of frontliners, all the djs were great and not a piece of meh costume fall off (daughter playing wit it and it still in tack, every rinestone in place, could send pics to prove it).

Anyhow ppl, I'm a business owner too and i don't know any business man/woman who is going to take any of these suggestions/complaints seriously because allyuh complaining and two words after, telling them allyuh go b back next yr. Ironic isn't it! Funny as hell too! LMAO.

This is not my first yr playing mas and one of the things that I learned is that medium band is d way to go for me. This was my first time with Ronnie and Caro, i did not know anyone and got special treatment from beginning to end. No TLC card, no shoppers card, no magma card, nothin but meh bank card and got my money's worth (else i was not goin back next yr).

Allyuh good yes! These are not even minor things u could turn a blind eye to. These are the same crap from last yr. At least to me it would have been a big problem, but then again, i work darm hard for my money and u must be find d pot ah gold at d end of d rainbow, know where money trees grow, married a rich person or won d lotto! Who is me to judge.

U need to step-up your game if u want tribe or ip (or any band) to take u seriously. If u mess me up once, I not goin back to fine out if u go do it again, but thats just me! Everyone has different levels of acceptance.

I totally understand that medium and small bands is not for everyone, whatever your reason, I totally respect everyone's decision and wish u all luck next yr. Hope at least some of u learn from your past experiences.

All bands will have problems some time or d other. I'm not naive, ronnie and caro have some improvements to do. When lunch came late and some of d chicken was spoilt, they dip their hands in their profits and got pizza boys and KFC for everyone in a little more than an hr. (cakes and pastries held us over till it came, no one knew it was coming, so u could imagine the dash for pastries and cake in the rain! lol, I was in the bus for frontliners sheltering from the rain and mines came to me), it was very impressive (although it was their duty, i paid for lunch) since i know of no other band leader/s who has ever done the same(i could be wrong, let me know). That said something to me and my friends.

It's obvious the bigger bands are more prone to problems, when dealing wit large bands, yuh better come out in battle gear! U better know someone or the more problems u will have. Don,t go wit a band because other ppl doing it, allyuh too big for that crap.

Saucy u do a wonderfull job and i know u will keep it up, this blog is very helpful, especially for first timers. Maybe one day u will do an article giving tips on what to do or look for when choseing a band and costume, if you hav'nt already. (I've gotton burn a few times but I learned from them, so I can share some dos and donts).

Remember ppl, this thing is a business(a very profitable one i might add), money comes first not u or me, but i not letting no body dig out meh eye.

Note that i am not for or against any band, just my two cents.

Hope u have some common sense!

Kim,
I hope you understand that for some of us it's not a matter of common sense (or lack thereof) but rather it's a deliberated decision based on perception, valued received for value given and expectation. Additionally, playing mas and your personal experience can vary so vastly from individual to individual that it’s hard to succinctly qualify the various reasons people come back year after year. I do believe that many of the comments from bloggers were really just that, comments, and not necessarily complaints. Additionally certain points were made as “things to improve on and lessons learned – recommendations for next year”. I don’t think they are idiots as you pointed out (rather strong choice of words) but translations of their personal experiences. If it really was a bad enough experience for them then they wouldn’t go back (now that’s common sense). But just for the record – I am a triber and I am already looking fwd to 2k10 (darn continental hasn’t started selling tickets for my dates yet).

i have a few comments (i totally with you on the granny bras!), but the biggest one is this: FIRE FUH DE SAVANNAH TIL THEY BRING BACK THE STAGE! tribe did not go downtown this year, which i think was a HUGE mistake. honestly, i think no downtown is why i didn't have such a great time this year (well, that plus the CROWDING). in the absence of a true savannah stage, downtown is the big one, and i think skipping it was dumb. maybe tribe can't do both for traffic reasons, but if they have to pick one, i prefer downtown to the road outside the savannah!

I agree with everything Kim said. Very very well said. Could not have been said better.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Kim you have never played with TRIBE so therefore you have to ask your self why all the loyal people keep going back; no it isn’t because we like it so and they don’t listen it is quite to the contrary. I have sent in my feedback to TRIBE over the years and for ME I can vouch for the fact that the do listen and make changes.

2005 – Debut year
Distribution was a mess at the mas camp – they subsequently moved distribution the following year to a bigger venue.

People complained of the drinks truck being too high the following year it was adjusted.

2006
Chaos at the mas camp on Rosalino Street during registration – the following year registration was moved to Cascadia with Air Conditioned comfort, seats and even refreshments.

Size issues with two sections due to bra restrictions – there has never been a size restriction for bras since, you can get any sized bra in TRIBE upon registration.

2007
Here is my letter:
http://www.trinidadcarnivaldiary.com/2007/02/feedback.html
I personally wrote and asked for prettier costumes with more feathers and beads, in 2008 Myths and Magic brought just that!

There was an issue with the back sections being left on South Quay when the band crossed the stage that did not happen the following year.

I also asked for a longer distribution time, two weeks to be exact which was instituted the following year.

The goody bag was another area I thought could be improved upon and we all got a well stocked goody bag in 2008 and 2009.

2008
Here is my letter in 2008:
http://www.trinidadcarnivaldiary.com/2008/02/who-say-tribe-2009.html
I again asked for more frontline costumes as in 2008 there were only frontlines for Lady of the Lake, Mystique, Pixie Dust and Silver Mist. In 2009 we had NINE sections with frontlines not to mention my request for more feathers was also granted.

I had no problems registering in my section of choice for 2009.

Another issue masqueraders had was that sections did not look like the prototype, case in point Silver Mist, that designer was let go from TRIBE (along with some others) . For 2009 in my opinion the costumes looked like the prototype in most cases and when there were changes to be made (Greenhoneycreeper and Caged Canary bra) masqueraders were contacted and informed about it. There was an issue with Pheasant but that arose because of the photography on the website and with Spangled Cotinga again masqueraders did not realize the costume was gold and blue instead of gold and silver as it appeared to be in the photograph.

Some masqueraders complained about arriving at the lunch stop too late for lunch last year as we were stuck on Charlotte Street for hours. This year TRIBE circumvented this problem by avoiding downtown altogether. We crossed the Savannah stage and got to lunch very early.

The major complaint was that masqueraders crossed the Savannah stage in one jumble last year, no one could see sections. This year security made sure that everyone stayed in their sections to cross the stage.

The only issue that was not fully addressed was band size. TRIBE admitted that the band was only cut down by 500 masqueraders, and yes in some places it was crowded. However, general consensus is that even though the band was just as big as 2008 it did not feel as crowded as last year. That does not mean that we do not wish the band to be smaller for 2010.

I have no doubt that some of the issues that masqueraders complain about and send in via feedback to TRIBE will be addressed for 2010.

The choice to fix my costume is a personal one; I always add extras and fix it to my liking. As a matter of fact TRIBE extended special courtesy to me to do my own adjustments to my costume by sending my bra to a producer that I chose along with the materials to decorate it to my liking. Other girls in the section wore their costume as is and had no complaints. And my costume was on par and in some cases cheaper than frontlines in OTHER small bands!

In conclusion I can tell you this TRIBE has yet to “mess me up” and these comments and suggestions are by no means complaints, just ways that I think they can improve on a very good product. Last year when my backpack was not delivered on time, I got offered home delivery as well as I received a 50% refund (and this was extended to all the frontliners in my section). Now that is the way to turn around a bad potentially bad situation and please the customer which is why I will play with TRIBE again and again and why so many other people want to be in the band.

IT HAVE NO ROOM! So I gladly welcome other bands taking in people that for sure will not get into TRIBE for 2010.

Excellent review, to which I would add:

1. TLC System: This definitely should be reviewed. I played mas with Tribe in its first year, then went abroad to study and unfortunately could not return home for Carnival as I did not have time off during those two years. I do not have a TLC Card - which shouldn't seem unfair, except for the fact that I know several people who also played in year one and returned to Tribe in year four and HAVE TLC Cards! Some didnt play mas, others played in IP for two years before coming back. Now, I asked for a TLC Card in 07 was told they didnt have records from 2005. Are the other people who played once and got TLCs, more loyal than I? I think not. But, I'm not sweating it. Now that I can get time off, I've managed to play with Tribe last year and this year. I will play with Tribe again.

I think a points system or a pay system is feasible. TLC members can pay for the benefit/ security of registering early; or Tribe can award points to those masqueraders who play year after year. I have miles with an airline and I make sure to fly with them always so that I can occasionally get a free trip somewhere. If I'm out of miles, I can also pay for additonal miles if I want to get a travel award. I think applying the same logic to the TLC system can be helpful.

2. Size of the Band: I guess the band seemed larger to me last year. This year, I was in front, and there wasnt a big crowd. I found myself at the lunch park early on both days...so it never seemed like I was crowded. I avoided the bathroom once everyone arrived too, but I think more are needed for sure. I did enjoy jamming by some popular DJ trucks - but I think placement of the rope would have helped with how crowded I felt. Now that I have a decent job, I can honestly say I'll probably pay if Tribe increases its price. I love playing mas, and since they launch early, that gives more than enough time to ensure the costume is fully paid for.

3. DJ's: I disagree with the synching of the trucks. However, I like the idea of having the popular personalities hop from truck to truck though, as more people in the band will get the vibes. Also spreading these trucks out will also be helpful. Having the most popular trucks as #s 3, 4 and 6 (if I remember correctly) congested everything in the middle.

4. 2K10 Theme: While I am skeptical of a Space theme and the potential for at least one triangular-shoulder-star-trek-inspired costume, I think it can also be dazzling. Stars, different coloured planets....less feathers, more bling...it could go great. The designers will have to be careful of veering in the direction of tacky, but if its anything like this year, I think it could be gorgeous.

All in all, the experience was great. The las lap in Jenny's was a great bonus.

Onika K.

I completely agree with you about the Savannah. I had a time crossing Downtown last year. The Savannah just isnt the same without the stage...we could always take the escape route from 2005 and head to the lunch park after downtown.

Bring back d stage!!! (sigh)

silverpatronus said...

i disagree about the band feeling less crowded than last year, i definitely felt more boxed in, but that's partly because in all my years of playing with tribe, this is the first time i was in a section not in the first 3 or last 2 (hated that) of the band, but right in the thick of it, with x-caliber truck. if i have to ask for anything next year, it's for tribe to pretty please set the section order before registration? i know it's unprecedented, nobody does it, but i have a personal preference for being in section 1, 2, or 3 and away from the 'hot' djs, and i would even pick a more expensive costume once i was guaranteed it would be in that cluster.

but i agree, i play with tribe (and party with them!) for a reason, and that reason brings me back every year: SERVICE! they listen, they incorporate feedback, and they treat me and the people i've recommended them to (30 of my friends and carnival guests over 4 years) extremely well.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

And people like to know why I am so concerned about the section line up! Even last year the size of the band did not bother me much as I was in section #1!

silverpatronus said...

i spent an inordinate amount of time bitching to my bf this year about being in section 10, and he was all 'what does it matter?'

on carnival tuesday on the avenue, he turned to me and said 'ok, i get it now. section 1, 2 or 3 next year'. we then promptly ducked out to meet the front of the band.

NadiaP0N said...

Onika K, in the past Island People would make the section order available from the time they launched. Since they use a "story-telling" approach and have chapters rather than sections, the order of the story on the website was usually the band order. I think this was the first year IP masqueraders didn't know the order until the booklets were printed. So making the order available at registration is something Tribe can do, but I don't think it will solve the congestion problem.

What you're really asking is to know what DJs will be provided for what sections so that you can avoid choosing a section with a DJ people may gravitate towards right? I'm not even sure (although I seriously doubt) that when bands launch, they have all that information confirmed. Not to mention that for one reason or the other, section shuffling sometimes occurs, especially if another section gets removed from the line-up altogether because of poor masquerader feedback. If the latter occurs and Tribe has "pre-advertised" the line-up (inclusive of DJs), can you imagine the onslaught of criticism and the number of angry masqueraders the band will have to deal with?

dougla_1 said...

DC Chica, Downtown was the best TRIBE road experience for me last year. This year, the Savannah road did not equal that Downtown experience.

MacFarlane has said in a published interview he will not present his band on the Savannah road if he cannot take the band THROUGH the Savannah.

I echo your sentiment, bring back d stage!!!

silverpatronus said...

'What you're really asking is to know what DJs will be provided for what sections so that you can avoid choosing a section with a DJ people may gravitate towards right?'

nope. the issue of djs is secondary to pure space. in sections 1, 2 and 3, there is more actual room! you can get out ahead of your section, or even to the head of the band, and the trucks are usually less crowded together than later down in the band. it's easier to move and manoeuvre, and harder to fall behind and get pushed even further to the back of the band by people clamouring for a dj or a bar truck. the head of a line of traffic is always the best place to be. at the very least you can see what the hold ups are!

dougla_1 said...

Yes indeed, Saucy is correct. From my view, TRIBE pay attention to constructive comments for improvements. They are after all in a SERVICE business (and Trinidad Carnival culture, of course).

NadiaP0N said...

Oh ok. I get you Onika K. I think because you mentioned your preference for being away from the hot DJs I misinterpreted what you actually meant. Thanks for clarifying :)

silverpatronus said...

don't get me wrong, the 'hot djs' are an issue, and i am grateful usually that tribe tends to stick them deep in the middle of the band (i find they tend to talk too much, 'wheel' too much just as i getting into the song and not play enough of a variety of music) except that this year i got stuck with one! i guess being at the front of the band eliminates that problem as well since tribe won't put a 'hot dj' at cluster 1.

HQ said...

Agreed ennekaycee. Well articulated & I agreed with all that was said.

Also love Saucy's detailed comment regarding Tribe changes made after critiscm. I have never been treated better or felt more valued as a masquerader than in Tribe. Yes, we pay a lot of money but that is because we really do receive a better quality product. And people feel free to criticize Tribe because generally they do listen. It is really a terrific experience and there are many other bands who should pay heed to this blog and comments if they want to understand how it is that Tribe can charge what they charge and yet have people coming back again and again. I feel very lucky to be able to play with Tribe.

Unknown said...

Why Oh why must people complain about every thing?! Kudos to Tribe for having hott DJs. I could not tell what they sounded like on the road because I preferred the vibes elsewhere so I went elsewhere. Tribe tries to think of every thing to satisfy all the different demographics that will be in a large band and I feel they did excellent.
When you attempt to serve thousands of people there are bound to be glitches and they also have excellent service recovery which Saucy pointed out earlier.
Big up TRIBE team!!

You seem to be taking offence, maybe u missed out on the part where i mention that i was not judging.
Nevertheless, i agree on some points, lord alone knows y some of u go back!

You call it comments, i call it complaints, things still needs to be fixed(although they don't seem to care about allyuh "comments" if they have to lose out on profits).

Saucy
Most of the things you asked for, u paid for it! should't have to ask in the first place. Some of the other things just made sense eg. the bar. U chosin to fix your costume to your liking as oppose to altering it because parts don't fit eg. belt or waistband, is 2 totally different situations.

I truly hope that your "comments and suggestions" is addressed next yr because allyuh deserve it for d strong patronage. Everyone has a different level of acceptance and i respect that.

Where my money is concern, i don't accept half bait excuses nor do i give any to my clients.

Dispite the fact that allyuh miss d part where i wrote that i respected everyone decisions, i don't have to jump off a cliff to experience what will happen to know what will happen! There were also parts where i spoke not just about tribe but all bands.

I taught this blog was 1 which you can voice your opinion on a given post/topic (and it was just that, MY OPINION!).

Taught we all agreed to disagree and still jump and wine with each other come carnival time because we all love carnival and playing mas and d stress and excitement of all the extra preperations we put into it for those 2 days(mainly us women, booths, makeup etc :). Guess i was wrong :(

Personnlly, d way i look at it, I don,t just pay for a costume anymore, I pay for a great experience! My costume is just part of the package.

Guess my expectations are high when i spending my money, that's y i stay away from certain bands!

HQ said...

But Kim,

How would Tribe know what we want if we didn't say so in the first place? Some things u just don't find out until you try to put them into practice. No matter how excellent a businessperson you are, there is no way you can anticipate a client's needs without feedback and dialogue, and that is all this is. In addition, I think Tribe has shown a willingness to provide partial refunds for snafus where possible. We all want perfection, but this is mas, and things inevitably will happen.

I think Saucy's comment was an excellent illustration of a band that pays heed to the wants of masqueraders. I am definitely interested in your opinion, I am just unclear/trying to understand why you feel that Tribe has failed us in some way.

Trinidad Carnival Diary said...

Kim your views are yours I was just giving you reasons why I choose to play with TRIBE.I understand the band is not for everyone and masqueraders will find another band that suits them better which is great!

TRIBE used to use the line that the costume is "complimentary" and that we were paying for the ultimate experience. Well I think for total enjoyment I want both my costume and my experience to be stellar!

I know that there will never be perfection but as long as it is close and 2009 was one of the best years in mas for me even though Carnival Jumbie did not have a good time (read her review on her blog).

Krissiegirl said...

I had the best time ever this year in the most beautiful costume i have ever played with in Tribe. I for one will play with them year after year and if for some reason i cannot i will NEVER go to another band. Tribe's Service is one that has bought me over year after year and i commend them for ALL that they have done for us loyal masqueraders. People will never be totally satfied and that is just expected. But once we express our concerns i assure you that TRIBE will listen as they have done in the past as Saucy pointed out, and i can guarantee you she is not the only one who has made improvement suggestions.

Even though the band was big this year i still felt very comfortable and happy while playing my mas and having a fabulous time on the road. You cannot expect TRIBE to know what everyone wants and to fix everyting for everyone's liking. It is just like life, one day we wake up and we are not happy about something, we do what we can to fix it. It may not happen right away but we try our best to fix our problems, so stop comparng TRIBE to other bands and bad talking TRIBE becasue they are doing a fabulous job and have continued to do so for the past few years.

For those of you who want to be a part of the TRIBE experience and just did not happen to get it, you cannot blame TRIBE for that. They extend the TRIBE Loyalty card to their loyal masqueraders because in truth and in fact that is what they deserve. The band cannot hold everybody and the loyalty card gives people the option of registering before non TLC holders. I highly doubt that every TLC holder registers as many of them have moved on to other bands so there will be some space available, and if the numbers are to be cut down the space left will be even more limited.

In no ther band even with that sort of system will you be able to get away from those who register and sell over their costumes for a major profit. It happens in ALL BUSINESSES.

I am very happy with TRIBE and will continue to play with them for years to come.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and until we see people protesting outside of TRIBE mas camp for better service/ costumes/ secuity or whatever else then i think we can all live with what they offer to us in the Ultimate Carnival Experience, because that is what we pay for and that is what we get...Great food, great service, great drinks and great music to keep us jumping up all day long.

So kudos to TRIBE on a great job done so far and to a better TRIBE in the near future!

A bit off the general topics (and prob too late for this post as well!)

But am I the only person that thinks its absurd that Tribe does not accept Visa/Mastercard/Amex on collection?

Is it just because they don't want to incur the charges - which are quite small in the grand sceme of things?(I'd rather give them the benefit of the doubt that its nothing to do with their income declaration for tax!)

I mean surely, its mad to ask ppl, especially foreigners, to make that dodgy treck to Cascadia with wads of cash. Might as well put a "rob me" sign on your car! Plus there is also the issue of maximum cash withdrawals. Its simply not reasonable in this day. Who on earth uses cash anyways?

And yes I could have simply paid for it in advance - but there are exchange rates and charges to consider. Not to mention that a lot of ppl register without know for certain whether it is possible to make in to Trinidad.
