Island People Reviews

Today I will be sharing with you the reviews sent in by readers of the blog of the various bands they played with for carnival, starting with Island People. On that note you should also visit Afro Chic for her review on playing with Island People as well;

I am an avid reader of your blog, and I admire your tireless efforts in blogging about our Carnival. It is indeed the ‘greatest show on earth’. However, as a masquerader who has played with bands such as Poison, Legacy, TRIBE and Island People, I feel it is imperative to write about my 2009 experience. Your blog represents the truth, and what I have to say is as such.

I will not go into detail about my horrid registration process with Island People. I think that topic has been rehashed by other bloggers. But this year was my third time playing mas with them; indeed registration was as chaotic as the costume payment and collection, and it mirrored what happened on the road.

I live abroad; therefore, Friday afternoon was the only time I had in order to pay my balance, and to collect the costume. Friends and I arrived at the stadium at approximately 2:30pm, and to our horror, the line had already made a bend around the gate. There were at least 150- 200 people in line ahead of us to pay, and the so-called line adjacent to ours to collect costumes was just as long; however, in that line, people were all crowded around the collection desk. It was a free for all – who get to the counter first was served. Pure madness.

We purposed to be patient, and tried to make a small lime out of it, being friendly and chatting with people in the line behind us. By about 4:00 pm, IP staffers were handing out bottles of water, which was much appreciated. There was free (hot) Stag available, as well as pineapple chow and juice on sale (why wasn’t it vice versa? hmmm…). My friends and I arrived to the payment counter eventually...(let's just say it was dark outside after payment was made), where there were only 6 flustered cashiers, and at that point the situation grew worse. There was a couple at the back of the line, an East Indian girl in the Natural Mystic section, and an Afro Trini young man. They somehow got the security guard to allow them to skip about 20 persons to get ahead, including 2 young ladies near me who were exhausted from holding their babies, so as they were resting on the table, the said couple bravely jumped in front of the young mothers, stating they were holding up the line. Mind you, these 2 mothers were from Barbados I think they said, so their welcome to Trinidad was definitely soured. There were many other foreigners who witnessed this event, much to my shame as a Trinidadian. These 2 skippers really let me down. Worse, the security guard then made his way to the front of the line in order to allow the ‘skipping couple’ to go ahead and pay; that is when the ruction start! There was a young lady who was quite upset at this move, a frequent IP masquerader I am told, and I’m uncertain what happened next but the security guard grabbed this lady by her wrist, yanked her out of the line in order for the skippers to pay, and threatened to have her arrested because she was the most vocal against the skippers. It was a shameful event as IP staffers could not control the fracas and began a shouting match with the lady who was vocal. Meanwhile, the skippers quietly paid their money and glided outside with grins on their faces and receipts in hand.

Needless to say, my friends and I still went ahead to pay off our balance and then collect our costumes. As I said earlier, there wasn’t really a line per se…we left the stadium at around 7:00 pm, exhausted from the bacchanal that just occurred. IP also gave me the incorrect size, and I was told by a staff member to return on Sunday for an exchange.

I arrived on Sunday at 10:30 am, (we were told to come at 11:00) and again there was a long line of about 100 people. IP had not opened the gate at this point, and when they finally did, they were only allowing about 10-15 people who could squeeze to the front inside. I’d had enough at this point and was ready to sell my costume right there! After paying $3295 hard earned dollars for the costume, not to mention my plane ticket and hotel, this was totally unacceptable. I decided to go home, rest, and in the end I altered my costume by hand.

To my dismay, on the road, there were stormers upon stormers, especially around the Queen’s Park Savannah. Security was non existent for much of the day. There was a group of girls who were no more than 12 years old who all trampled me in order to chip near truck #3. I am quite petite, and instead of putting up a fight, I just decided to go home. This was my absolute worst experience playing mass. The food (all the way at the back of the band) was horrible…dog rice and cold soya chunks…Lucozade was finished by 10:00 am. My day on Tuesday just kept getting worse and worse. People have had negative things to say about the demographics of Legacy and TRIBE, but my experience with them in the past was certainly much more enjoyable; that’s where there are people with CLASS!!!

On a positive note, I honestly loved the beadwork on my costume, despite the fact I had to alter it myself in the hotel after a mad dash to Samaroos. I will not play with Island People ever again, and for those who choose to, I respect that decision, but I think people should DEMAND that the organizers address certain issues to ensure masqueraders’ safety and comfort- within their control. There will always be hiccups on the road, but Saucy this was definitely not a representation of “island people”, nor the “greatest show on earth”. I am not thinking of getting a refund of any sort (PLEASE!! that ain’t happening). I’m just a very patriotic Trinidadian who lives abroad, and I am ashamed that anyone, especially a foreigner, could experience this in the future. I guess this is my caveat emptor.

I hope that IP can make a greater effort by taking steps such as having costume collection a week earlier, and a designated day for foreign masqueraders. Also, they could hire more persons/cashiers to assist with payment, rather than having so little to handle such a huge crowd, which would obviously stress their staff members out. Try a different security firm. This guard was totally out of line (no pun intended). Finally, I know stormers will storm every band, but this year was totally insane as many times I had to fight for a position to chip in my section against persons who clearly wanted to storm as they please. That is not fair to the person forking out $3295!!!! It’s just not right!!!

Ashamed at IP.

2k9 was the worst carnival for me. I have been a founding member of IP mas b4 it was even IP mas ( from Poison days).

After spending over 3hrs in line when I went to collect my fiance's costume, I was physically assaulted by a SWAT Security guard in the cashiers room in full view of everyone present. THIS IS NOW A POLICE MATTER!!

When you are in section 2 how the f**K they expect you to walk all the way to the back of the band to get food. I still have our food chits from both days.

I played with wings this yr and I had to fight for space on the road as there was many stormers.

When my fiance and I spend almost $8000.00 together on our costumes the least we expect is good f**king service from start to finish.

IP when you advertise something and people pay for that. It is your right to provide all that was advertised, once we pay you our money a Contact is formed!!

Hi Saucy,

I had my first experience with playing with IP. They did not make a very good impression on me, however I had a good time regardless. I played with the section Rays of Light, so I had drama getting my costume in the first place, but when I got it and tried it on, it was perfect in every way. I loved it. I was just a little scared of the experience on Monday and Tuesday because of the horror stories I've heard about them. My friends and I were a bit tardy regarding Mas registration so we didn't get into Tribe who we have played with since their inception, so we decided to give IP a chance.

They got off to an early start, left on time both days which I was happy for. Breakfast, drinks and lunch were delivered on time and as promised. I was satisfied with most of it however, trying to get food along with 100 other ppl from a moving truck is pressure, I hated that experience. I eventually gave up on Monday and went to the snack truck and took a plate (with pies, chicken legs, sandwiches etc.) instead of the food, good thing I had a heavy breakfast. Tuesday was much better even though the rain was a bit annoying, I had no other problems foodwise.

Everything seemed ok to me with the exception of the lack in security and the number of stormers. I also did not know when I crossed the stage as wierd as it may seem. Everyone was all over the place, there was no real sectioning at all. This annoyed me because that is what I really look forward to every year. Also, there was no distinction regarding front and backliners, everyone was together....all the time...even on stage. They prompted masqueraders one or two times but no one listened really. Also, there was no music truck with us on stage, so people practically walked across the stage, while the commentator begged for a music truck for us (sigh).

Overall, I had a good time due to my friends and family playing, however to me the band had no vibe. When I looked at the video done on Izatrini.com, it was clear that IP was just really quiet and docile compared to the other bands.

I can't say I will play with them next year, but we will see how that goes.

Oh, and I attached a picture of me in my costume :)

IP Masquerader.

ISLAND PEOPLE EXPERIENCE 2K9

Ok....So I had paid for my costume by the end of January so I actually got fast tracked but even that woudlnt have mattered on the day I collected my costume. I expected some form of a wait when I reached Monday morning at 4 but I was totally suprised when I reached and in less than 5 minutes I had my costume in hand and was walking out to my car.

I was too too happy!!!

HOWEVER, by Friday when I went with another friend to pick up her costume I was horrified to meet a SUPER long line snaking its way out of the cashier office in the freaking sun no less!!! I managed to walk past the line to try to get a sense of what the pick up counter was looking like and was just as appauled to see that the lines had brocken down and it seemed like a free for all!

I met another friend who had been there long before us and yet was still there and even when he got into the pick up line only got his costume about an hour later! Thankfully my friend who i came with got her costume much faster (because she is very forward and finds ways around things).

While there I did notice a trend of people not being totally happy about their costumes....they either found that the headpiece was smaller or had less feathers.....I was happy I had none of those problems as I had no feathers or head piece for my costume!

What I couldnt understand however was why people waited so long to collect their costumes? I heard that from Monday to Thursday there were very little people there but Friday was a complete mess.

However with our costumes we could then concentrate on the weekend’s parties and looking forward to mas on the road.

I didnt play jouvert so I got up somewhat early and headed out to meet the band....we just missed the opporunity to jump up at the first judging point on the avenue but it was all good. We grabbed drinks and joined right in. We enjoyed ourselves till we got to around globe cinema when we realised that alot of people who we dont think should have been in the band were right in the thick of things. It was the first of many signs that security was a little lax.

We enjoyed ourselves none the less as we chipped to downtown port of spain and it was then it became apparent to me who this band was loyal to me as ‘Wild Ants’ magically appeared on the sound system once we approached the stage even though people were clamouring for some ‘Bachannal’. One of my girlfriends did not care for the song at all and so she did the ‘bad man dance’ everytime it came on (re: standing up with arms folded).

We then quickly went up to charlotte street and we realised food was being served.....problem was that it was being served on the go.....and I mea really on the go. People literally were running after the food truck and we joked it had to have been ‘fast food’. I actually followed some people by standing on one of the rungs of the truck and holding on because it was getting tiring running after a truck just to get food.

We even had to walk and eat as we didnt want to get left behind.

Now, I am not much of a food person during carnival time....a few bites is all i need or care for as i hate to jump up and down with a super full stomach. However I would rather that what little I do consume be tasty and I could not really say that for the food....it was just.....’edible’!

So we then progressed to the ‘savannah stage’ very quickly and and the experience of ‘crossing’ was over all to quickly and before we knew it we were already approaching qrc....and then I realised that the trucks were moving a lil too fast for comfort. We came to a stop once we got to qrc though.....just long enough for us to catch our breath and lie down for about half an hour. We made the mistake to approach the bar which was being swamped with people and i think were being restocked as they had very little of what any of my friends wanted to drink. (No redbull????? What????)

We then made our way back to the stadium just after nightfall and stayed long enough for the trucks to park so that we would have clear path to leave and go home.

Tueday my friends and i woke up early for preparations and pictures but still managed to make it to the stadium later than we would have liked....which resulted in the band once again being gone. We didnt use the shuttle on the Monday but we felt it proudent to this time.....only problem was it was taking its cool time to get there. We walked a little distance and it finally came and we reached to the band just in time for the rain to start pouring on us. We hid for cover as none of us wanted to meet the band already drenched but were very surpised to see the band leaving us well behind not caring that people would have to be drenched to keep up that hour in the morning.

I realise they have a schedule to keep but DAAAYYYUMMM....slow your roll just a tad why dont you? We caught up to them jsut after the second judging point and oddly enough we had a long wait by blode for some unknown reason....and we slowed down again by the library when here was another small downpour.

The biggest blast of rain came however just before the downtown judging point which was a shame because by the time the sun came out and we were crossing people had either discarded there head pieces or they looked god awfull.....I immediately could tell who had either totally managed to hide from the rain or had used fletch powder on their feathers or something just as effective. We still enjoyed ourselves crossing the stage and this time i did see machel on the truck signaling them to run his track. My friends didnt care at this point and danced with ants in our pants all the same......the brainswashing was complete.

We then once again walked in the rain up fredrick street. Lost some friends who refused to walk in the rain but some others managed to get lunch from the lunch truck and some girlfriend of mine took pity on me as i clearly looked hungry and fed me some soggy food.

We were once again held up on park street and on charlotte street for some time. Whe we finally made it to the savannah I realised that the sections were not lined up properly so I took advantage to just run amock and have fun.

However once we passed the ‘savannah stage’ the real problems started....my friends couldnt get anything to eat...real stragglers enetered the band and the trucks in general started moving like if we were in a race for something. We deviated from the route i thought we would take and ended up going to the round about close to elerslie and turning down and then being stuck for sometime crossing by a park....

By that time my friends couldnt take it anymore and left the band to head down to roxy to secure some food of our own but not before we saw one of the band leader themselves trying to usher out stragglers out of the band to no avail. We got food from some venndors and while I wanted to once again rejoin the band my friends decided to wait for the trucks at the stadium to see if they would once again have ann after party. We soon realised this wasnt the case and so we tried to put our tired feet up for a little bit.

20 mins later we tried to leave the stadium only to find a horrible traffic jam and it took 45 mins to get to the highway. It was thoroughly frustrating but we were happy that we had a great time otherwise.

Our costumes didnt have feather and so they held up well even thorughout the rain (cant say the same about my face paint but i cant blame that on island people). The actually glossy material on the waist bands had some wear from all the bummbers that wined on me and my friends but nothing to make us look too shredded.

All in all our experience was a good one.....if our crew was more centered on food we would have been pissed as most of my crew couldnt find food...and there were no snacks seen being shared as it was last year! The liquor situation was good....although at one point i wondered if the bar people could be more accomodating. The security was good on both mornings but i think faltered on both days after the savannah stage but i am now wondering if this is because it is more than they could ever handle....

Island People should see me again next year god spare life!

Dear Island People,

I am writing to express disappointment in my Carnival 2009 experience with you. I will first list the few positive aspects:

1. The online registration process was easy, fast, and efficient.

2. I received professional customer service when I called to ask questions about my costume.

3. The cashier line moved steadily on Carnival Friday even though the line was long.

4. Paramount security was good at keeping masqueraders away from the wheels of the trucks on Monday and Tuesday.

Here are the negatives that put a damper on my Carnival experience:

1.Costume distribution was very disorganized on Carnival Friday. When my fiance and I stood in "line" for over 4 hours to recieve our costumes. I placed quotation marks around the word line because I am unsure if one existed.

2. My costume- Heavenly Sky- only had one feather on left side of the bra when it should have had feathers on both sides. The attendant at the counter insisted that the bra came with feathers on one side only. In other words, part of my costume was missing at collection.

3. My Heavenly Sky headpiece was poorly made. The beads were falling off at collection. A staff member fixed them at the Distribution Center but they fell right off as I was putting on the headpiece on Carnival Tuesday morning. I also attempted to use shoe laces to keep it on my head because the elastic just didnt cut it. The shoe laces were ineffective. I ended up holding the headpiece in my hand for most of the day.

4. When we arrived at the downtown judging point, while security held back my section (Heavenly Sky- Chapter 2) as Paradisus crossed the stage, Dream (Chapter 4 or 5) was allowed to cross ahead of us. When security realized what was happening, Heavenly Sky masqueraders were told to push through Dream to get to the judging area. Unacceptable.

5. The pelau on Monday was cold and tasteless.

6. The food on Tuesday was cold.

7. Non-masqueraders were allowed to order drinks from the bar.

8. Crossing the "stage" at the savannah was a disaster. Non-masqueraders were allowed to jump in the band. Security was no where to be found.

9. The band got separated after the savannah. Truck 1 and 2 continued on the parade route leaving the rest of the band behind. D Krewe passed through our band, confusing many masqueraders. When the remaining trucks finally started moving they sped off resulting in us running after them.

10. The music shut off suddenly and without explanation on the way to the stadium on Tuesday.

Overall, the service I recieved from Island People Mas was below the standards advertised. I will be playing mas with another band next year.

‘bad man dance’ everytime it came on (re: standing up with arms folded) - lmao because that is exactly what I would have done!

But seriously... come on people... IP getting same/similar complaints YEAR AFTER YEAR! they obviously are unwilling or unable to sort themselves out. I could write the reviews for IP 2010 now! I do not understand why people go back to them year after year! I find it amazing that after reading these reviews, and Afro Chic's, a few of them say they will play with them next year! After the bad review they have just writen! First of all I greatly doubt I would ever try IP in the first place, but if I did and I had all these complaints, they would not see me again! In 2010 my friends and I will hopefully be in Tribe again - but only because we had no problems with them last year!

SLK, despite IP's faults I played with them for the first time last year and it was so much better than the kind of rubbish road management we had this year.

Every review here is what I experienced and bringing people to play mas for the first time, I was so ashamed after. From registration right down to road managment.

Imagine having to gallop after the pee pee truck after crossing the stage. No order and totally hoggish security who seemed to have gone and rested when we got to the savannah. Looking at the presentation on tv, IP had no order, no security and crowded with stormers. I was able to watch a video we did on Monday and it was appalling to see how many people were happily jamming behind the trucks with no bands. I don't know how they stressed that they improved on road management because it was the worst.

As for costumes, I loved mine. I was not impressed having to go back a second day for my headpiece. Having to do that made my foreign companion miss the opportunity to see kiddies mas. I really don't know how much common sense management had because u ask people to come in on their designated days and u can't give them their headpieces.

IP need an overhaul of their management badly!!!!! Don't know if I will play next year but seriously considering jumping bands for something with a little more order.

How unfortunate! It seems that all of the efforts they made to improve customer service last year went down the toilet this year. Also, security glitches are unacceptable!

If u choose to treat making mas like a fete rather than a business, you should be ashamed to charge Tribe prices- my heart goes out to all of you IP masqueraders.I smell refund demands.

Southhombre said...

This has always been Island People.s trademark, Piss Poor Organisation/Public Relations etc. Even their carnival Fetes are a shame... They charge a premium price for Amnesia then you get no food and limited drinks, then their reply is "our bad". Yeah but is your good because more profit for you. I hope bands like Spice take this opportunity to welcome IP ex-masqueraders come carnival 2010.

hmmm...any of those reviews could have been my review after my IP 2007 debacle. That was when my decision to not play with IP was made. No matter how pretty, or creative the costume if a masquerader has problems collecting costumes, has awful security and food experiences (and to top it off have to buy food after paying for an all-inclusive experience!!) then they can and will move on to another band.

I just hope that these persons with negative experiences don't give IP their money again for 2010, otherwise IP will never learn.

What happened to the improvements made in 2008?!

Well I've been a faithful IPer since their beginning and usually I don't have any more problems than would be expected. As for this year costume collection was frustrating but in truth I know had I done fast track that wouldn't have been an issue. If everyone wants to ignore the days to pick up their costume or simply can't make it then what more would you expect than unreasonably long lines and a long wait. As for my costume, it was PERFECT even more beautiful than pictures could capture. As for the road, having all the food trucks at the end was a bad idea but there was plenty food available in some variety, but u can't expect them to please everyones taste buds. I was satisfied as my goal was not to expend my energy on food anyways. Drinks were overflowing, bar staff was friendly and at no point did they tell me they had no more Johnnie so I was happy. Crossing the savannah stage I know was organized at least from section 1-4 as I watched them pass then crossed with my section 5 ocean whispers. At the end however sections 10-12 had no real order they all kind of passed together. Security was lax later in the day and at one moment there were plenty stormers which did confuse me so I moved on to a different truck. But then again the amount of random folk chasin IPs trucks this year I'm not sure they could handle it or expected it to get so bad...this is the first year I noticed that problem. Anyways, I did have a wonderful time and my bf who was a first timer had a wonderful time as well. There are def things that need to be fixed and logistical problems to be solved but overall my experience was great.

I too can attest to all the complaints made here. Though my section was one of the first to be sold out it was rather small on Mon. and Tues. that could only mean that many people did not collect their costumes. Added to this everyone else from the other sections was fighting to be in the front, this was ridiculous....Which I think affected the vibe of the band this year.
I made up my mind not to play with IP again at costume collection and even more so on the road Mon. and Tues.
It seems to me that IP is only concerned with the celebrities and models etc. that seemed to be always in their band and not the average masqueraders.

I don't have to tell you how many faces I see every year in IP simply walking through the gates on Carnival Sunday when everybody else had to beg like dogs to be let in to collect a costume/exchange a costume they paid so much for. My goodness it was appalling and amazing how much these people are all about money. I can remember on Sunday one of the guys stood in front of the massive crowd to explain how our $900 was forfeited and people waiting to buy and collect costumes would have to pay full price for them. Of course this was done in poor taste and was disrespectful to people present since it came across as if we were begging. Did they forget we could have played with other bands.

Mon. & Tues. was very bad as one person mentioned their was no vibe, and as someone who played in the 2nd section and frontline let me tell you its not all its cracked up to be. And the freaking stormers WTF....I had to literally fight for my space in the band...and where did all the holligan masqueraders come from this year anyway...
As for the bar no Lucozade, no Gatorade what about the people who refuse to get drunk.I drank coconut water and coke all day. What about resting for lunch and for God's sake have a truck that people can rest on instead of sitting on the street and having to run after the band when they get left behind. And who was the masquerader in the CARNIVAL costume on the MEDIC truck telling people they can't come on the truck unless the are sick but she is up there in costume wining WTF.....
I refuse to play with IP again. last year I changed my mind but this year was the worse so far and even beats back 2007. When you pay so much for a costume why do we have to beg u'll for good service. Why do I have to look to my right to see one of your Ms. T&T being served when other people can't get what the paid for. IP needs to stop their favouritism and start giving their masqueraders what is due to them. IP poor....poor....poor and thats the truth.

Trini Vice, Fast Track did NOT matter. I was one who choose to pay off early and I still had to line up with everyone else. Fast Track and regualr collection lines were the same.

It seems to me that IP is only concerned with the celebrities and models etc. that seemed to be always in their band and not the average masqueraders.
This is so true. Machel jump on the truck downtown and they forget about the masqueraders in the back! No music to corss the stage but the announcer saying "Masqueraders please keep moving". To what? It eh have no music!

TriniVice said...

Afro~ I'm speakin from my experience alone. In the past I've done fast track and have been in and out in under 10 minutes to pick up three costumes. This year I had to pay a balance and the wait was extensive. Half of my group did however do fast track and were able to pick up 8 costumes in a short time. We can blame IP for poor organization when it comes to having set lines for costume collection but we can't ignore the fact that people in general were ignoring lines as well. If you see ropes and a line why walk up to the counter as though you're too good to wait. Its a two part blame..masqueraders should have had some sense of direction and wait on line properly and IP should have had people making sure the lines remained in proper order.

Lady~ I find there was plenty vibes on the road but then again once I have my friends my music and my drinks I'm satisfied. I don't know when they ran out of lucozade though bc I was drinkin lucozade thru most of the day in between my johnnie different flavors and all..there was also the coolin station truck to rest on which I went on for a while to rest my feet as I was crazy enough to wear boots with a heel this year (never again lol)

NadiaP0N said...

I don't drink alcohol so I share the frustration of those who were told that there was no more Lucozade; Coca-Cola, juice & coconut water can only do so much to keep you hydrated on the road.

On a visit to the bar on Tuesday, after we crossed the Savannah and it became a truly ALL-INCLUSIVE BAND ie, EVERY man jack who wanted to jump up was included, I saw a man in full costume from another band requesting 3 Stags which he gratefully received and proceeded to share with his friends who just happened to forget to wear their IP costumes and ID bands on Tuesday.

Thinking that the bar attendant didn't realize that the guy wasn't an IP masquerader (because of the mad rush to serve others), I told him that the guy wasn't in the band. His reply? "WHO HE?! He is security".........Now even if I was of below average intelligence and DRUNK, this fool could not get me to believe that IP security would be parading around in a costume from ANOTHER band!!!

Last year I told myself that IP had to come with a costume I LOVED for me to even consider playing with them again after past bad experiences...and they did. To this day I believe that my costume was THE BEST I have ever played in and I love it. However, no amount of beautiful costumes and road vibe can make me overlook the fact that I did not get my $5000 worth. Playing with IP is too risky a venture; you never know if you'll get your full costume, you never know if you'll get your head busted open by non-masqueraders, you never know if the trucks will stay with you or abandon you on South Quay...the list goes on.

For all the money masqueraders are shelling out, we need to DEMAND a certain level of service and if a band cannot comply...au revoir. There will always be hiccups yes, but I cannot see myself staying with a band that keeps having the SAME problems it has had from its inception 4 Carnival presentations ago. Some first time bands are getting rave reviews and a band that has been doing this since 2006 can't even manage to properly secure and feed its masqueraders??? Gimme a break!!! Don't they do a postmortem after the season is over???

bella ella ella a said...

OMG if I played with IP I would be DEMANDING a refund! allyuh real good yes. For all of those masqeraders that had negative experiences with IP - please boycott this band & teach those greedy committee members & bandleaders a lesson. They need YOU, you do NOT need THEM to play mas!!! There are tons of bands out there, find one with good reviews and respects their masquerader's hard earned dollars. My friend HQ made a valid point which I have discussed with her before, IP treats their mas like a fete or hobby and not like a serious business. It is unacceptable to advertise certain services to attract masqueraders and then NOT provide the services that were paid for. If I was an unhappy IP masquerader I would continue to be like a thorn in their side. They not gonna shut me up til they give me a refund. Do NOT accept their bullshit excuses!!!

TriniVice apparently you were a lucky one to be on the MEDIC truck/ cooling station, but when my feet was hurting (I wore boots too) I was told the truck is only for the sick not if you resting your feet.

ennekaycee...I share ur sentiments I too after a bad experience said I was not going to play again...but then last year I totally enjoyed myself...what happened this year...IP is not consistent...
By the way did u'll realise most of the public figures that play with IP did not play this year i.e. Brian Lara lol......I guess they got the memo.

As an IP'er i was totally vex and frustrated by the service on the road given to masqueraders. I will not go into details as it was pretty much said by fellow bloggers but what I will say to IP.."Never *^*&$#* Again IP rest assured my crew of 15 and myself will be playing with another band come 2k10"

IP you have truely dissappoint your diehard fans and I'm sure there are hundreds more that feel the same way. You guys have a truckload of damage control to do.

Adios IP

Hmmmm...it is really a shame, and as one person commented, maybe all the IP'ers should do a mass migration to Spice or something...IP should really remember they need the masqueraders not the other way around! Really unacceptable...

every year they promise they are going to get better, my girlfriend played with them this year and she said it was the worst, she said certain people only taking photos of there girlfriend alone like it was a one woman show lol my girlfriend crazy yes lol, but it's really sad that people wait all year for carnival and they just messed up folks carnival i don't know what i would do in that situation I would be going nuts cussing and ranting like a mad woman, and the nerve to be inviting people to there house on ash wednesday me and peeps was like hell no! instead of trying to lime and drink you'll better get a round table meeting and get you'll band together if you'll intend to stay in the mas game, just stick to throwing parties you'll do that ok..

um... is it any wonder that every year we hear the same exact complaints about IP and yet every year around registration time, we hear people gushing about how "wonderful" the costumes are and somehow that negates the bad customer service and lack of security and amenities on the road? people if you want IP to change... stop spending your money with them. it's obvious by their responses to your past complaints that they could care less what you think about their "customer service" so either you show them by pulling your money back or just let it be because next year yuh jumpin with them again. i would think you'd rather do the former instead of the latter...

Saucy I love your blog. Keep it up.
I played with IP for the first time. OMG. They were much better on Monday. No problems at all. Tuesday was a hot mess. It's hard to pay $575 USD for chaos.

Now conventional carnival wisdom says that picking up costumes on Carnival Friday and Saturday are the worst days EVER. DON'T do it unless you have to -- like me I flew in from NY on Thursday night so I went in expecting chaos on Friday.

The only saving grace was my costume: Afrodisiac was slamming, my best costume in YEARS. My NY friends played with IP last year and swear they were really organized but since they didn't come to TnT this year they would be embarrassed by IP. My mas crew and I decided to give up on the big bands and switch to the smaller bands. IP needs Jesus and last year Tribe on the road was garbage ($600 USD not well spent). I actually miss Poison. ;)

Wee Int'l in 2010 ppl.

This was our first time playin mas. My sister and I chose IP because of the costumes. Ocean Whispers was absolutely beautiful. We flew in on Friday and collected on Saturday. Now the day I collected, I hated it - I ordered a medium belt and large panty – the large looked like a small panty…like 8 sizes smaller than the xtra large my sister had and there was no way my bum was going to fit into it. I went back on Sunday to exchange since they gave me the wrong size – frustrating. I able to get in the gate after a 3 hour wait to get a different size. And there were people there who came after Insomnia and had to wait until the time I got in and some who were told to come back after 4 to purchase. After that, my costume was more than I imagined! Boots and all.
Monday we had a great time. We looked good and had fun on Tuesday too.
On Tuesday, what shocked us was that there was no respect for FL. We decided to play BL just because it was our 1st time, and am glad we did. I would have been upset if I paid the extra FL price and didn’t get to stand out. My sister and I being the courteous ones we our did our best to usher the FL's we saw in front of us when it was time to cross, but should that have been our job?

Bar service was good for us the whole time. I was confused just like everyone else wondering why so many non-masqueraders were getting drinks, and not just one or two but so many.
The lunch service could have indeed been a lot better; suggestion if all food trucks are going to be in the back: one truck for fish, one for chicken, a third for vegetarian, and all trucks have ‘snack’ available! And the food staff had the nerve to be mad at us, when we were the hungry ones payin them and lookin like beggars.

I still can't believe I crossed the stage to "Ants"!

I loved the on the road experience when there was a little security. You can always expect things not to go perfectly.
Why did a non-masquerader burn me with their cigarette as they were jumping with us as we passed me the Savannah? It was RIDICULOUS. Why did I spend so much time looking at people with no bands on? My sister wanted to stop after we crossed the Savannah, she was like “It’s over” I was determined to get back to the stadium for the party……….the 45 minute wait in traffic.

Now will I play with them again....uh not sure. I loved my costume much more than other band selections and would not change that....we’re surely reading reviews and will be considering who to play FL with next time.

BTW: Thanks Saucy for all you provide, cuz if it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t have been as prepared! I had a wonderful time overall.

All these complaints, I played with IP and I had a blast. I picked went to pick up my costume on Friday and I paid and left knowing if I did stayed what would have happened returned on Saturday an collected my costume is less than 1/2 hr. I had problems with my costume which I got changed for another of my choice and was refunded cash and an apology. I think food on the go was a great idea I didn't pay to rest Monday or Tuesday that's what Ash Wednesday is for. (Although we did rest on Monday)

Persoanlly I will be playing with IP as long as they are in business, my girls and I had a blast.

Island people security were rope holders only. They were afraid of the stormers. They also did not believe in sectioning to cross the stage. I hope they dont say it was to give the participants more fun because we were trying to form but the section leaders did a disappearing act or were clueless. I left the band before we got to the savannah because i felt unsafe with all the stormers. So there you go Island People

I have been a die hard IP masquerader since they started, I would say that this is the first year that I have ever had any complaints. First off, the lack of security after we passed the savannah allowed non-masqueraders to come in the band and wine up on us and disrespect us. The lack of organization of getting all the sections together before crossing the judging points was also upsetting. And no after party, was a great disappointment. This is the first time that I am considering migrating to Tribe. I'm not sure what my decision will be and I guess I will leave it up to costumes to make my decision. I won't put all the blame on IP, because every year I see certain people complain about things and making up stories when in fact, it never happened, but I will agree 100% with many of those that wrote their experiences. I really think that IP is on the verge of losing is loyal masqueraders who could care less which celebrity is in the band, but is loyal, because of all the life long experiences we've had playing with this band, but they fail to hear the cries and the anger in our voices. They need to step up NOW, before its too late!

i think IP does some kinda witchcraft because all we hear is about bad experiences from people, but from the moment they launch and these same people see the costumes they go crawling right back.. come on guys. If you keep giving them what the want they will never change!!!!

I have to say this was the worst mas experience I've had since I started playing. I played with IP before and had a GREAT time. I don't know what happened this year, but they really need to re-group and come correct. I went to collect food waaay in the back of the band, only to be met by chicken and noodles flying at the truck driver. Some girl pelted her food at the driver and was vex because he didn't have the decency to stop the truck so people could collect their food without getting run over. No human being should be treated in such a manner. We're not begging for anything, we paid our money to play mas and when IP feels it can treat people any way, I will spend my money elsewhere. Trinidad has too many bands for me to be running behind a food truck like I'm a vagrant.

ditto everything shells said! After my experience in 2007 I said never again! IP not seeing my money and after my experience with Tribe this year it is highly unlikely I'll be playing in any other band any time soon.

IP needs to come betta dan dat man! Listen to the people and improve shims man!
