So leaked photos of
Red Unlimited's "
Reflections of Rio" hit the internet ahead of their St Lucia Carnival 2009 launch last night .
The unedited shots showed a costume that looks VERY much like Spice's sea salt with a wire bra and admittedly different headpiece:

And here is the section "
Costa El Silver" poster as seen on Red's
website:

The costume surely fits Red's theme and it is a nice version of Spice' s Sea Salt, however last year Red also showed a costume from Trinidad Carnival 2008 at their launch,
"D Mang from Ronnie and Caro. Consequently that costume was replaced after both
Sweet 7 and I wrote about it.
I am still awaiting
official confirmation from Spice as to if this costume is an unauthorized copy since some people seem to think that the costume is a Sea Salt rip off.
However I have been
VERY reliably informed that the designer of the sections for Red did indeed get the costumes that did not sell as well as materials from SPICE!

They used the same model too? wowsers...
Something not right at all! I RHEL want to hear what Spice have to say about this!
LOL def not the same model, as my cuz was the model for Spice's version.
This girl here doesnt look tini. I also dont remember the white section having a wire bra in spice... the orange section in spice...however had a wire section.
But honestly... someone from spice will have to confirm.
This is not the only section that used Spice Materials. Peppercorns and another section (borage,I think)materials was used.
I switched from Caribana to SLU Carnival just because of this band. The costumes look way better than toronto bands.
Spice did not have a wire bra for Sea Salt but this version does; it is the same applique and materials used on the bra &accessories as well as same exact belt as Sea Salt.
I also wonder what implications this has on the designers of the costume and if they are aware that it is being used in St Lucia.
There was a Harts section in Bacchanal Jamaica but from what I was made to understand Harts does their costumes so no issue on if the costume was "stolen" or not.
It is not even a case of using Trinidad's costumes for "inspiration" as I have seen with the Caribana bands that have tried to copy elements of popular sections from Trinidad Carnival 2009; this costume looks as if it was bought from Spice and being reused for St Lucia or it is copy.
If it is indeed the former I guess Spice had extra costumes/materials for sale if it is the latter I would wonder what rights are there to protect intellectual property in Trinidad when it comes to costumes.
Since I have inquired from the persons affiliated with Spice for clarification and they have yet to respond one can only speculate though I do have alleged information that the designer for Red, Alicia Balthazar, was the one who approached Spice to get materials for St Lucia Carnival.
OK ... I am sorry. But as gorgeous as I think Spice's costume was ... Its hardly original and creative, and could probably be found on any given stage in Vegas on any given night.
I mean come on!
I dare you all to look at Vegas showgirl costumes and videos and see how many "Sea Salts" you find. Rhinestones and all!!
(Sorry about the 2 posts!)
i pointed this out on imix and someone replied saying that people always saying that the costumes from trinidad but they jus look similar them materials were too close for my eyes lol bands got some real recycling going on lol!
During Trini carnival season, I could've gotten materials for a certain band's sections. Now that Trini carnival is over, they released the rest. Most stores/ vendoers only request that the excess materials be opened to the public after the carnival is over, unless the band notify them that their costumes are being used elswhere (IP). Sometimes they even wait until an entire year before allowing people to purchase the materials.
