One week from today we shall be looking at the first Carnival costumes of Trinidad Carnival 2010 as Spice will be holding their media launch on Wednesday June 17.
Expectation is high among many to see exactly what the design team of Richard and Anthony Productions have created for Spice's "The Spice Route", and I can tell you that among many masqueraders looking for an alternative Spice is the band on everyone's lips!
The buzz and hype surrounding Spice has even reached to certain section leaders who I am informed are allegedly seeking to leave their immensely popular bands for a spot in Spice! Something has to be working for you when the stalwarts in the business are knocking at your door.
I too am excited for the media launch, if only to get some more information on the theme, a launch date as well as to see some costumes!!
So, do you think that Spice is poised to be the new "IT" band on the carnival scene? Do you think that Spice will cause a migration from other bands for 2010? If Spice has the most gorgeous drop dead costumes out, will that be enough to sway you to Spice things up come Carnival ?
Thoughts, comments and opinions on Spicing it up welcomed!

It is with mixed feelings I wish Spice all the luck in the world.
On the one hand, I am happy that this band came out guns blazing and give people something to sit up and take notice. I am sure that R&A will not disapoint this year and that Spice will be the band to beat now and in the future.
On the other hand...
I guess the thing that made Spice extra great (from the folks that I knew who played with them) was the fact that the band was not plagued with the problems associated with being the "IT" band. I would hate to see Spice turn into a "Tribe" or an "IP" with issues of overcrowding, size discrimination and all the other nonsense that plagues the big bands. I would hate to see Spice involved in all of the band bashing that happens when demand outweighs supply and folks have to scream to the mountaintops.
In short, I hope Spice continues to do great things, without losing the "homey" fun essence that made them a success. Please Spice stay above the petty band bashing and I wish you the best of luck in 2K10.
To the question of will I play in Spice for Carnival 2010. . . the answer is no. Although I will be waiting with baited breath to see what they come out with. Currently I am happy with my band of choice and I see no reason to switch anytime soon. However, if Spice continues to improve then who knows I may take a jump in the band.
I think the immense interest just shows that their is a real need for a worthy competitor in the game.
Just as I was willing to not play with Harts in order to give Tribe a chance in yr1, I am all for trying anyband that can show its willingness an effort to execute well.
I am not a devout loyalist to any band and most certainly do not have shares in Tribe!
All I want is a great costume, good service, value for money, safety and an enjoyable hassle free carnival.
If they can tick all the boxes, they will do well.
I can’t wait to see their 2010 presentation. It seems like a lot of people are planning to jump ship for 2010 but I’m afraid that if they become the “IT” band there might be a replica of issues. I hope they can maintain that level of customer service that their 09 masqueraders spoke highly about.
Well I already decided to give Spice a chance in 2010 after My Islandpeople fiasco last year. I already know who my section leader is and requested a special costume. I am far from apprehensive on what's to come from Spice for some odd reason, I am actually comfortable in my decision to leave IP. I just hope that they do not become over crowded with tons of people.
I just can't wait to see what bands have to offer for 2010. Very excited. Wish them all the best. At the end of the day, having options is great so if Spice can pull it off and become the new "IT" band then good for them.
So many people were not able to play mas this year because of the economy. I imagine many will definitely be traveling for 2010 and Spice's hype could encourage an influx of interest. Nonetheless, I'm willing to give them a chance. You don't have to jump in an "it" band to have a good time on the road. My concerns are service and security, and a nice costume never hurts. Hopefully Spice can continue to provide this for 2010.
I think a lot of people in the TRIBE/IP demographic are looking for another option and after all the positive feedback they got in their first year, Spice will be that option.
Of all the new bands to launch for 2009, Spice is the one that has gotten the most vocal support, which I think is a great accomplishment for a new band.
As DeRedting said, with increased popularity comes the risk of running into the same problems the "IT" bands are now experiencing. That may be unavoidable in this business arena because even smaller/less popular bands have some of those same problems too.
Reality is tho that Spice can learn from the mistakes of these other bands and hopefully do better. I wish them all the best for 2010 and look forward to seeing their costumes ;D
After playing with IP, my sis and I seriously considering switching to Spice... and I think the real question is if Spice is ready and prepared for the masses now wanting to play with them
I do have my fav band but, for me, the costume is important. When you see a costume that just speaks to you, makes you feel good about how you'll look in it and gets you excited to play mas, that is special. If SPICE can offer that and the exceptional service people bragged about from this year, who knows if they can sway me over :)
I'm not loyal to any band. I'm simple and prefer if the carnival experience would be the same. I have played with Legacy, Tribe and IP and have no second thoughts at all regarding playing with Spice...Wherever i see a fab costume and my crew is willing to go, there i go...
All I wish for, is a nice costume, good service and good food and drink. This will determine how much of a good time I have..not the name of the band.
Well I am just so excited! I was a spice 09 masquerader and they had my support from the day I went to their launch!!! I too hope they don't get carried away with the hype and keep that homey feel they had this year! Spice 2k10 ah ready!!!
what i liked about spice was that they didn't have all the hype associated with a big band like tribe or ip. Because of this, there was a closer relationship between the bandleaders and the masqueraders so I hope with all of this migration there will be a structure to handle a bigger customer base without losing all of the good customer service from this year. Again, ppl there are options, there are OTHER bands besides tribe and Ip!!!!
I too have no trouble migrating to Spice. I however will not migrate only to encounter the same issues that I sometimes have with TRIBE..this super early sellout of the band and people fightin for costume and ting..I hate it.If u shellin out that kinda money, u might need some time to think about it..review ur options etc.
I for one really loved Spice's costumes last yr..and if they bringin it this yr..for sure i go jump with them..cuz I LOVE a pretty costume! I could only hope that Spice keeps up the great costumer service that occured this yr with (what looks like) and inevitably larger band for 2K10. I wish them all the best
i wish them all the best. i doubt that i will be changing bands anytime soon, but it's great to see another band doing well.
*scratching my head* - Spice? Tribe? ALL ya giving MEH STRESS!
its good to see another band in the mix 'spicing' things up..customer service is what its all about...and you can now see a mass exodus from other bands and a flight to quality...spice all the way!!
