According to the
Trinidad Guardian, Machel Montano has handed over the mantle of leader of the HD Family to Farmer Nappy; Machel will not be a headliner for Trinidad Carnival 2010:
Patrice Roberts is the boss, Farmer Nappy, the veteran, Zan, the cool operator and Umi Marcano is definitely the dancer-boy. The foursome are the HD Family—not HD mind you, as that title’s reserved for Machel Montano, the man who’s ruled the soca game for more than ten years.Going into 2010, Montano has opted to focus on other things, leaving his team to travel their own journey, even amid whispers of doubt and uncertainty........
They don’t see what many in the entertainment industry have been chattering about—the risk of the band losing its following because Montano won’t be the headline act for Carnival next year. In fact, Patrice says she thinks it’s a strategy. “You know Machel always tries to re-invent himself.” The new boss, as the guys call her, explains that Machel will be back and forth and he will be around, just not centre-stage. They agree that this new outfit will be a little different for the people to absorb, but they are confident that they will serve their purpose well.
I am curious to see what this means for the HD Family, the Road March race, the soca mafia and the impact it will have on Carnival in 2010. Will Machel be missed next year and how important do you think his infulence is on your Carnival experience?

I am a huge Machel fan (although many of my friends aren’t). I personally would hate to experience carnival without a good track or two (or three) from Machel. Not that I would let lack of Machel inhibit my ability to have a good time but his music certainly contributes to hysteria and excitement. I am hoping this simply means he is going solo and not completely absent for carnival 2k10.
No surprise there. I'm a big fan of Machel, but most of his 2009 offerings were way below his normal standard. He needs to take a back-seat for a while.
I will miss him, but I'd rather miss him for a few months, and have him come back strong for 2011, than put up with dreck like 'Wild Antz' on the road.
Machel eh givin up dat stage...no way!! All this is just to add to the C2K10 suspense for what he comin with next..
why do i think that Machel is going solo AGAIN??
ewwwww...i like my Machel....sorry , but im not patrice, nappy or umi fans...worse yet for zan...i want machel...
I am pretty sure he will be around to throw in a lil zing every so often. I too am looking forward to see the others have a chance to shine instead of being in his shadow and also to him coming back the following year rejuvenated and ready to drop some haaawt tunes on us.
Machel's back catalogue is more than enough to sustain any band on the road, so I won't really miss him that much for 2k10. As squezle said, I'd prefer he took a break, than put out rubbish like Wild Antz (and he tief the damn song too yes!).
And I don't fete, so it won't make any difference to me in terms of him performing. But it will be interesting to see how the soca mafia responds to this!
hmmmmm i think the soca scene will cope without machel carnival 2009 he did not exactly have the best offerings did he?? i mean Antz is the worse tune i think i heard from him! i think the tunes he bring out for the summer were better and will filter into 2010 anyway Doan hold we back, slow and ramajay are good tunes!
Like his music but was completely turned off by his personality in 08. I didn't expect so much ego, and since then I've definitely stopped supporting as much. However, I was looking forward to HD!
I find this pill hard to swallow. Machel not frontlining yet he come out with more songs than the rest of the HD family for 2010? So what they gonna do? Sing his songs while he lounging backstage?
This is the second time Machel is taking a "break". The band then had Roger, Nappy and Peter they held their own but when Machel returned the band was in greater demand....nice business move in these hard times.....
I am and always will be a big fan of Machel..... I wish him luck in whatever he is doing... he will be missed and no one can take his place in HD. He will sure be back in the future
I'm a huge Machel fan and have been so for many years even when he was with Xtatik. However, I think his performances have become very commercial and a little boring - I really miss the raw energy he use to bring. And I def agree with everyone no more Wild Antz like chunes from Machel. I doh really see him sitting this whole carnival out as he has some songs I'm really feeling, "No Behaviour" "Fetin on" and the new one with Busy. If anything I think he may go solo and just put out music for fun and take a break from the competitive nature of carnival - it is def pressure for him - everything he come with we expect to be a big crowd mover. Look like he's just having fun right now making what he feel. Also Patrice and Zan are def holding their own this year - Farmer Nappy well that's another story :-(
