Last month I shared photos from the British Airways and TDC video shoot in a post titled Carnival in December, well here is the actual commercial advertising British Airways - Go Caribbean in January fare sale!

All them costumes and THAT is all they put in the ad? The belt from Xi Ling Shi? Steups!

And nobody is going to link that to Trinidad, since that is not what people think of when they hear 'Caribbean' and 'Carnival'.

Steups.

Epic fail!!

I thought the ad was cool I saw much more than a belt.. I guess it depends what your looking for and what the world is looking for, when I saw the ad it was a plesant surprise...its not every day you see Trini Carnival on TV in the UK, hell we are the place that taught the world to party!
nice one

THANK GOD all they didnt show was bikini and bead....at least the world will see other images associated with carnival.

nope im actually happy that they showed traditional mas and all that and it wasnt just beads and bikini, but if you saw sauce's carnival in december post, you remember there were about 30 or so costumes (both male and female), from 30 to 2 costumes in a whole day shoot was a total waste lol

The ad is not bad...there are only so many images they can fit into 30 seconds and it was nice to see images that just weren't only bikini and beads. Mjsbunny said no one will link that to Trinidad...I agree except I don't think the ad was supposed to only target travelers going to Trinidad. That's not what I got out of it. I think they simply decided to use images from Trinidad ie the costumes. (Honestly, the average person who is not into mas would not even know those costumes are tribe, IP etc or even from Trinidad mas anyway.) I really can't tell where all of the other images are from because they look like other countries in the Caribbean as well. I think that was the focus of the ad and Trinidad happens to be the first, the biggest and most popular carnival in the Caribbean for the year so they used some Trini images. They tried to make the ad look like a whole carnival / cultural ecperience the best they could in 30 seconds. My two cents! (which I desperately need to put towards my fetes for next month lol!!)

I have no problem with them advertising the Caribbean. Hell, I think it's brilliant! The actual fares are another issue entirely.

But what does bother me, is them using Trinidadian culture, i.e. steelpan and Carnival, to promote the entire region, when chances are no one is going to link those two important things back to us.

And yes, I know we don't have the monopoly on Carnival and other islands have their own. So then they should not have used Trinidadian images.

It just really irritates me when other countries profit from Trini creativity. Petty and childish, I know. But that's just the way I feel.

Sorry.

Gosh mjsbunny, for a second there I was really wondering where you were going with that last rant. You summmed it up quite nicely though "petty and childish". Let's also add "close-minded and ignorant". The ad was meant to appeal to European travellers with an interest in a Caribbean destination. I think you need to step back and get your head out your behind and appreciate it for what it is... an advertisment promoting the region. When TIDCO starts advertising Trinidad and Tobago on European stations then you can get back on your petty pony.

But Goddess, why is my opinion on this bothering so much? Like you was the ad director or something?

If that is the way I feel, that is the way I feel. Why you have to talk about me having my head up their bottom as if you know me? Steups.

Tres baffling.

It's not always about Trinidad msjbunny. And in typical trini-style you think that it is. You know the song "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you"? And the same way that you get irritated that other islands 'benefit' from trini creativity. Think that perhaps those other islanders get equally irritated that Trinis seem to always want to hog the spotlight and it must always be about them.
It's not. The fact that we know the carnival imagery came from Trinidad does not discount that there are other images in there that could very well have been filmed in antigua or grenada. But you don't hear them complaining and grumbling about their beaches always being used to 'benefit' other islands.

Since we were privvy to those photos from the video shoot, many of us expected to see more of that in the final ad, hence the disappointment. This is typical in advertising: spend many hours shooting and have that condensed into 30 seconds. Much will be left out -- such a waste.

But this ad is really about British Airways, and the Caribbean airfare sale is their current product. All Caribbeans were just lumped together. Just like in the US, to many Americans (still) we're all Jamaicans.
*sigh*

I wonder if ppl from other Caribbean countries really think that Trinis hog the spotlight??? I don't know if that's true bc their country's images have been seen worldwide for years! I live in the States and most Americans typically can only name 3-4 countries in the Caribbean - Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica. Maybe Aruba or some other tourist spot. Certainly not Tobago (pronounced tuh-bahhh-go to the Americans!!) That's because we see their images everywhere!

If I was sitting at home watching this ad for the first time and saw a Tribe costume I would be like "Hey!!! That's Tribe!! That's Trinidad!!" and I would be excited that the producers used Trinidad images to promote the Caribbean. It shows that Trinidad is really having more of a commercial influence internationally, not just the typical "Come to Jamaica" commericials that are all over the place. (Nothing wrong with Jamaica BTW.)It's okay for mjsbunny to love her country. So what?? All the other ppl from other countries love theirs too right? Let them hate on Trinidad for once!

mjsbunny said...

But I find allyuh REAL bold y'know. Like cutetrinilawyer said, let me love up my country and our culture and the contribution we've made.

Steelpan- the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century- was invented in Trinidad, but what country is is most associated with? Sure as hell NOT Trinidad, I can tell you that much.

I was talking about Carnival with a friend of a friend, and she was like "Oh, so is it because of Notting Hill?" He genuinely thought that Trinidad Carnival was a result of us copying Notting Hill, which he thought was a Jamaican thing. And he can't be the only one that thinks that.

When I tell people over here I'm West Indian, they automatically assume I'm Jamaican. When I roll my eyes, then they assume I'm Bajan. The loud steups tells them that I'm not either. So I have to say I'm Trinidadian. It's the same thing with my Nigerian mate. She hates people mistaking her for Ghanaian. She doesn't hate Ghana, but she's proud of her heritage and gets annoyed when people just assume things about her. Same with me. I don't hate the other islands. I just don't like the assumptions people make about the Caribbean.

So if me being proud to be Trini makes me vain, then effin hell yeah, I'm vain. Like Carnivalcocoa said, from the photos Saucy posted, the anticipated end result was much different to the actual advert. ALL those costumes, and they show the belt of one and the headpiece of another? It WAS a monumental waste and if I was one of those models, I would have been quite peeved. And like cutetrinilawyer said, to any 'normal' European seeing the ad, they'll think "Ooh, Antigua" or "Ooh, Barbados". They won't be going "Ooh, St Vincent".

Thirty seconds is nowhere near long enough to give someone a proper idea as to what we as islands have to offer. Fact of the matter is, I did not like the advert and not because it didn't feature a lot of the costumes. I didn't like it because it I PERSONALLY thought it was a bit rubbish. Other people will like it. That's their perrogative.

But until BA sorts out their fares, their customer service and get their cabin crew to agree to the new contracts, this might all be moot anyway.

Just my humble opinion.

I also think the ad is a success. It was a pleasant surprise. I mean they actually had a shot of 'mas-making'! I am sure there was footage of stuff that many Trinis never even see before in dey life! How many of you have seen ppl actually 'pulling in seine'? Doh pong the ad. It was nice.
Whether it's really a sale or not is another story, but it is good publicity I think.

dougla_1 said...

The ad is quite nice, actually. Get ready for Carnival in Trindad, if you please. Whatever, yuh consider "sale", you should have booked yuh flight on British Airways, ALREADY! Lol

I just saw the add on Sky (in England) and felt so proud. Totally agree with S!
