After more than 30 years of absence from the Carnival Calendar the Jaycees Carnival Queen Show is set to take place on 10 February 2010 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Ballroom. After a revitalization of the organisation in 2008, members of the chamber decided to resurrect the show after hearing much about its history in Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival. At the Media Launch held at Mango Media, Dere Street, former Miss Trinidad and Tobago Faye Alibocus gave her endorsement for the show and did the official sashing of the participants. Seven delegates will compete for the title and the winner will be the representative of Trinidad and Tobago at an International Pageant.
The Show will be hosted on a much smaller scale, with emphasis on standard and quality. The biggest and probably most important change though, is the decision to align the show with a cause. The Committee has decided to use the show as a catalyst to increase awareness of persons living with disabilities and have thus partnered with the National Centre for Persons living with Disabilities. The theme of the show is “Beauty with Compassion……Making a difference in the Lives of the differently abled.
For those who may not know, the Carnival Queen Show was a part of Carnival history in Trinidad and Tobago having been a staple of Dimanche Gras night in the 1950s until the Government appointed Carnival Development Committee handed over control of the pageant to the Jaycees in 1959. The show was then moved to the Oval on Carnival Saturday night until its return to the Queens Park Savannah in 1963 until it ended in 1971.
The committee has received support from the National Carnival Commission, National Lotteries Control Board and other various entities but encourages Corporate Trinidad and Tobago to contribute to the cause of the show.
