Fete promoters must be seething at the latest announcement that Machel Montano, currently taking a hiatus from Carnival 2010, will be the opening act for the Beyonce "I Am" concert on February 18th.
Confirmed in a press conference with TSTT executive vice-president of mobile services Lisa Agard and the soca superstar, all plans for the concert are going full steam ahead despite the controversy and protests that have arisen since the announcement of the fact that TSTT is the sponsor of the concert. Machel Montano will have an hour long opening set while Beyonce is scheduled to perform for 90 minutes.
Other rumours of Beyonce participating in Trinidad's Carnival was also put to rest as Lisa Agard also stated that Beyonce will not be in Trinidad during Carnival Monday and Tuesday as she is scheduled to perform in Peru on Tuesday night.
Interesting developments, especially since Liz Montano denied that
Machel was hired for Beyonce, five days ago. Lets see how many people are going to boycott Carnival fetes to attend Beyonce with this latest development!

TSTT really ain't play they trying to make back that money nah... this can go 2 ways...machel performing for bey bey can result in an increase in ticket sales, since I believe that would his first performance for the year, thus simultaneous creating more animosity coming from fete promoters.

people can just steups and not really take on the fact that machel goin to be there thus creating no real change in sales but fete promoters will still tote though

This concert could not interest me less. I am going to 9 events over carnival, and while Machel and Beyonce are performing I'll already be in Tobago having a far better time.
Machel performs at concert to probably earn an entire season's pay in one night. Big surprise!
The cynical side of me believes that Machel knew he was performing at this concert since before the Carnival season, and 'took a break' so that people would want to see him open for Beyonce. Build up the desire and all that. "Oh goooood! Machel? I eh see him all season, so I will go Beyonce!"
You can't tell me he is REALLY taking a break, what with all the rubbish he's been releasing.

So what if he prefers to not perform for One Fete again, or Trini Posse again, or Bachannal Weds again or AC again! And all countless others AGAIN in favour of supporting Beyonce.
I long for the day that I can turn national radio on in the UK at prime times and hear "One More Time" or "Dance With You" on the radio. I mean if Sean Paul and Kevin Little could do it ...
These are the kind of gigs that Machel should be doing more of. I hope he is 100% rested, rehearsed and ready to give an amazing performance.
And about his earnings, GOOD FOR HIM! The only suckers this year are the party patrons who paying to go to these very fetes this year for the same or more $ as previous years, and the promoters are not paying Machel to perform. I hope yall drinkin lots of Johnnie and taking wantons home to make up for that extra cash they pocketing! Lol
I not hating on the man for wanting the international exposure you know. I actully fully understand it, and I hope it finally puts soca on the map. But if I hear Beyonce do any soca remix or something, and she taking the props for it, I will lose my effing mind. ;)
I just find he didn't have to say all that nonsense about letting the HD Family take the spotlight. Just say "I'm working on a big project that I can't talk about now. But I'm very excited about it and it should hopefully give soca some international exposure." Don't talk bollocks about taking a break.

Maybe I'm just being too simplistic. But in any event, it will cause a ticket surge and everybody will love Machel on the night and I hope he does really well.
RWB, I'm wondering what stations you are listening to in the UK. Machel is played on ChoiceFM and Vibes very frequently and even more so nearer Nottinghill Carnival. You can even stumble on a soca session or 2 on a number of pirate stations.

All I have to say is it good for all them promoters and them who like to glorify Machel and make him all about Carnival. What about all the other artiste who contribute to Carnival and also put in the time. Artiste like Kess etc.
Did you'll really think Machel would jepordize his pocket clearly he would have been working on something bigger thats why he took a break for the season. And of course he would have know before all these things would have been negoiated since last year...Beyonce and her camp is not going to let just any artiste open her show. Thats why TSTT was adamant about there 'good business decision'. Money talks people and bulls%*t walks.
I onl concerned now that all the Machel fans will want to also go to the Beyonce concert which may may TSTT raise the prices. lol...
Trinijam I am talking national radio stations like Radio 1. I am talking about "pop" level airplay and UK/US singles charts. I am talking about MTV rotations, festival appearances and Jools Holland!(why not eh!!).
When Turn Me On was big out here it was everywhere. I think Machel and the more talented soca artists are much better than that. And everyone knows Sean Paul even if they don't understand half of what he sings.
What I am not talking about is your once a week soca shows at 2am. Or pirate radio stations, or MTV Base specials at Notting Hill carnival time.

I will be there to see the concert...I only getting regular tix b/c unlike FayAnn- My money could done. LOL. I coming from NY and de regular tix are only $71 USD- I would neva get tickets for so cheap at Madison Square Garden. Plus, it will be my first concert- so Hey! Why Not.
yeah this is selina from san juan, trinidad i wonder if spending $267.00 US for 1 hour and 30 minutes is equivalent? Also this is the last stop on her south american tour, so i am sure she will be tired. after all the last concert was Tuesday 16th February and todY is the 18th Feb. Well hope everyone who has no other use for their money will get its worth. but i highly doubt it.
