What does that add up to? The driving force of YUMA - Young and Upwardly Mobile Adults - a new band for carnival 2011.
The band leader, no stranger to the carnival scene and well supported by a group of seasoned event professionals, is Teri Leigh Bovell. She believes the band will offer what new masqueraders want, "We listened to what new and experienced masqueraders have been calling for and have created a movement or, as we call it - YUMA Vibe, that will engage masqueraders beyond the Carnival Monday and Tuesday." The YUMA Vibe is already being felt. Their FACEBOOK following is over 1200 people strong in just 3 weeks and grows daily. Queries about the new band have been dominating the social media and party scene for weeks. All will finally be unveiled come Sunday August 8th at YUMA's band launch at "The Oracle" (Queen's Park Oval Greens).
Why "The Oracle"? "'According to Ancient Mythology the Oracle predicts fate and knows all," explained Bovell highlighting the use of peacock feathers and intricate beadwork on the Oracle costumes to highlight the "seeing ability” of the mythological character the costume portrays. In YUMA's 2011 presentation, the Oracle predicts the horoscope of each of the signs of our ZODEAK. The spelling is not a typo. YUMA's "Zodeak" is unabashedly untraditional. "Every masquerader will have their birth sign portrayed but for Carnival 2011 they may choose to portray a different sign based on how the 'YUMA VIBE" takes them. Nothing is predictable and we're proud of that. Not because you're a Leo you'll like animal print and elaborate pheasant feather headpiece. Not because you're a Pisces will you like the of the water inspired design of the bead laden costume with plunging neckline - there's something for everyone in YUMA. The vibe will entice you to embrace characteristics of (ZODEAK) signs you want to display BEYOND carnival." For this reason, those expecting to be able to predict anything about the band, launch or costume presentation - look out for surprises!
One surprise was the use of a mix local and international models for the band's promotion. Daphne Narvaez, international swimsuit and music video model (picture attached), not only posed for pictures but gave our local new models tricks of the trade that can help increase the likelihood of successful modeling careers. "In exchange our models taught Daphne how to portray the YUMA vibe at the photoshoot and how to wine which was not completely foreign to her due to her Puerto Rican heritage ," said Bovell. "Its all about development. You need mentors to help you become Upwardly Mobile!"
Speaking of mentors, the YUMA team has a great one - Carnival legend, Wayne Berkely. Berkley was part of the design process and gave both design suggestions and feedback on each design as it neared fruition. At the costume review sessions he noted that there was still creativity in the design process and was thrilled to see materials being used in different ways to bring designs together. One costume, for example, uses Kanekalon (synthetic hair) in the headpiece to add movement. The YUMA design team benefitting from Berkley's mentoring and critiquing consists of award winning designers Richard and Anthony, carnival legacy and award winning designer Crystal Aming and Gina Maingot whose designs have recently burst onto the carnival scene.
So are you a Y.U.M.A.? Guess you'll find out at the launch. Limited tickets are available at $150 from committee members. YUMAscopes are released daily via their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/yumavibe . The band invites you to log on to begin catching the VIBE of the band today.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.
*sickie face*
I looking forward to YUMA presentation.. The 2 costumes at media launch were BEA-utiful... and I am sure the rest will be even hotter...time for some new bands to open up the options...
don't be hater bunny... it just means more space for you in Tribe... everybody wins :)
LMAO @ Justin. I've hung up my backpack and headpiece for next year, so I'm just observing.
I'm not denying that the costumes are lovely. But I'm not one for all those grandiose statements. I have the same sick feeling when reading any of Spice's releases, so I'm an equal opportunities hater. ;)
i am definatly buying into the YUMA experience, the costumes so far are fantastic!
and im sure those are the less hot ones, despite the statements they keep putting out YUMA is coming across very professional.
Mjsbunny, sometimes when you have nothing constructive to say you really should just keep them idle fingers of yours poised, if Tribe said it, it would be wonderful, but if its not Spice its now YUMA you have a bee in your bonnet about come on hunny save the bitterness its begining to get quite sad!
:-)
I totally agree with Justin, YUMA promises to offer something different, fun and exciting...and i guess we will see soon enough. I am definitely looking forward to their launch on Sunday. With the introduction of new bands means new options, which means more or less there's a little something out there for everyone...yay!
Big, fat yawn @ that tired argument. Any criticism is always because all other bands are rubbish compared to TRIBE? Evs!
Why can't they just say "Look, we've designed some wicked-ass costumes, got a few hotties to model them, tried something cute with the name but it didn't work. Ah well, see you at the launch! It's going to be ace!!"
If TRIBE put out a release like that, I would mock them in the same way. Spice pull that nonsense last year, when they were banging on about "service that has become synonymous with Spice" after just one year and they did it again this year with there crap about the three 'levels' of costume.
People are just full of $hit and that is what irks me. I also apologise if I didn't get the full gist of redgirl's complaint, but the English wasn't the best. Do you need a mentor?
woah!! Like it getting a little passionate in here...
ahhahaa!!! but I love your pitch for the band bunny!! It is totally what I would do... take it down the granular level... if you looking to have a effing amazing time, in some sh!t hott costumes and a little more room to wuk yuh waist then come join us... we dere next year!! I wonder if that would actually work tho..
Truth is that EVERY band in Trinidad is extremely lucky that we are Carnival crazy and they are the ones who provide the "service", no matter how great it is or how terrible it has become because we will continue to play year over year over year cause "we eh play in green yet" or "machel sing jump and wave last year and this year his bess song is wave and jump"... is the SAME THING EVERY YEAR.. but it is the SAME UNBELIEVABLY FANTASTIC TIME every year.. thats why we do it.. or at least thats why I do it...everywhere will have things that you not going to love..every costume going to be a little different to the ones last year... but if you still can't have a good time and that music still can't take you over.. then you completely missing the true reason for carnival..
so whether you play Tribe, IP, Spice, Harts, MacFarlane, Oasis, Yuma or your grandmudda best costume from 50 years ago.. is all about the jamming in the streets, the alcohol in yuh head and the music pounding yuh brain...
so lets just all do what Carnival is supposed to be about... having a time...
das my pitch for next year!
who with me? Carnival 2012.. I playing MAS!!!
PS. Bunny why you hanging up your backpack?? that is madness!!!
Speaking of mentoring people on the English language, I believe you meant to say 'their crap' and not 'there crap' msjbunny.
Not taking any sides here, just making an observation and trying to level the playing field. You should not throw stones if you live in a glass house :-)
With respect to the new bands though, I have to admit that I am a bit skeptical about YUMA. I am not liking the acronym nor the tone of the press release, but I am trying to look past that and see what they are going to put forward. I'm excited for the launch :-)
I would like to try another band for 2011 and I am interested as to whether YUMA could be it.
Where's the love people...no matter which band you choose to play with in any given year, guess what when you've got your friends, the drinks and food flowing, the music's pumping and the 'vibes' nice you'll do what we do best have a beautiful time.
I like the vibe. It show they at least thinking about why they doing what they doing. They seem almost professional and finally we know why they brought in a foreign chick too. Why so much hate on this blog these days?
I don't understand why people get personal in the comments. It is an opinion. You state yours and let others do likewise.
round of applause for T anu !!!
Well said Justin! Love it!
Well said Justin! Love it!
thanks S, i was not aware this blog comment box doubled up as an english exam too? but hay Mjsbunny unless you have perfect English you really should have stayed quiet or picked on someone elses comments.............
nice, Justin. But if any band really came out and said that, it would be lambasted as unprofessional and tres "ghetto". LOL!
I think I'd prefer a professional presentation and explanation any day, personally.
Also, if we thought the Marse and Culture lovers thought the BBF (Beads, Bikinis & Feathers) set only care about drinking and jumping up with their friends and less about the costumes, theme, presentation of the culture etc etc, that pitch helps perpetuate that perception...(whether it is true or not) haha!
...but to each its own right?
I am looking forward to YUMAs presentation.
I'm also looking forward to YUMA's presentation. I think TRIBE can attribute its success to several factors. The costumes are on point but it doesn't stop there. TRIBErs love the customer service, and they know they can trust TRIBE to follow through (i.e., your costume looks like the prototype). Nobody likes to feel gimmicked. But things so bad that TRIBE actually has to bring TWO bands?! People should have options. It's turning into a mas monopoly!
It's not always enough to say, "If you don't get into TRIBE there are other options!" Why should I have to pay just as much money for a mediocre experience?
If YUMA can actually follow through on their promises, that can only be a good thing. At least then people will have choices and they won't have to sacrifice quality. But, if they don't, it will be another case of "talk is cheap."
Their release seems a little ostentatious but I guess they want to attract a certain "calibre" of masquerader. I am really looking forward to the launch and getting a full view of their offering, something tells me my sign would be represented in a HOTT way.
Where is the love though? It's Carnival we're talking about here, there shouldn't be any "hard" feelings
P.S.-I hope I didn't fail my English exam.
Things are definately scary in the mas world when TRIBE seems to be the BE ALL AND END ALL when it comes to the carnival experience. Kudos to them for developing a high reputation but come on people there are other bands with sometimes even better costumes.....nonetheless...YUMA does look promising and their approach appears professional and with the masquerader in mind.
I am SOLD... Love the YUMA concept and now Luv, Love, LOV the costumes!!! I would be definitely want to be part of this new and exciting YUMA family... GREAT JOB guys.
I think the 'TRIBAL KINGS' have just met new fresh challenger and i guarantee you by the time Carnival rolls around there would be a NEW KING of the Carnival Jungle!!!
