Today's question comes from a masquerading mom to be who wants some advice on playing mas post pregnancy, any answers to her question, tips and or advice from those of you who have been in that situation is welcomed, please leave a comment!
Hey Saucy,
I was wondering if you could help me get the answers I'm looking for. I am having a baby, due in October and I want to play mas in March. I would like to know how feasible this is being that I would be breast feeding . Can you c throw the question out there to see if any other mothers had a situation like that for Carnival and what did the do to prevent leaking all day? Thanks

good question. If you're like me, you probably will not be producing that much milk at that time to the point where you will be leaking. If are still producing a lot of milk the only think i could suggest is to try to pump maybe an hour or so b4 you leave the house, and wear a breast pad on the road. I honestly don't have much advice if you need to pump again while on the road. Unless when your band stops for a rest you try to get another pumping in...lol. Have a family member meet you at the rest stop or if you are driving yourself, try to park near the rest stop and leave your supplies in the car.
What Someone said, might be the best advice for this situation.
I'm sorry readers but if that was me....I would keep my behind home and spend time with my baby.
People come on, Carnival will always be there...time with family is priceless compared to Carnival.
Putting yourself through the headache of:
1. Being uncomfortable on the road
2. I am full, I need to pump..where can I do it?
3. And even thinking of your little one
May end up not having a good time on the road.
To Masquerading Moms...sorry but thats just my 2 cents.
Bizzie Chic you took the words out of my mouth. Based on the picture, I thought the question was going to be about playing while pregnant. Which up to a point is acceptable. (We don't need you on the road with a 9month belly looking like you about to go into labour at any moment. That's scary to people around you.) At the risk of offending the question asker I would say "keep your tail home, your child won't be a baby forever. It's just one year".
For all the reasons stated by BC above.
So when you go out to work during the week day. What happens then? How about those that work on Saturdays and Sundays or those that work shift or those that work double shift... allyuh think about allyuh baby then? Stupid argument because there would be many a time when you would be away from your child for 8 hours and more...Don't fool allyuh self...so you can't play a little mas in the morning and then go home in the evening? you can't play mas on a tuesday instead of monday? You can't come out on the tuesday and jump up in a small band...maybe just donate to the small band and take a costume and take a jump up? stupid argument...dumb
Yeah i agree with prince namor. If this chic is an avid masquerader she already had her baby and she has family support allowing her to play mas both Monday and Tuesday... why not???? she is not pregnant and on the road risking trauma to her abdomen..like some i have seen playing with a 6 plus month abdomen...and still have no problem with there choice.
Btw the chic wants advice on dealing with her carnival lactation issue.. she already choose to play mas..so that not the topic here.
I agree with Someone. Great advice. And Prince Namor and Kevianne are on point too. I have had to be away from my child for way over 8 hours while nursing but never during something like Carnival so it will be a challenge, but no reason why you shouldn't be able to enjoy your experience nonetheless.
One small caveat though be careful not to pump too much before you start because what happens is your body may produce more milk faster thinking it has to accommodate demand from a baby and you may get engorged sooner than ordinarily. I am not sure how to start, but I recommend you contact La Leche League (http://www.llli.org/)an international breastfeeding support organization and peruse through the site and the bulletin boards for suggestions from women who have had to be away from their babies for over 8 hours or more in a public setting similar to carnival. Good Luck!
My dear we'll be on the same boat come March. My puppies will be safely tucked away with individually wrap disposable breast pads,so get some. I'll be walking distance from the savannah incase I need freshening up, so take heed and don't worry. With your first drink on those two days you'll forget your troubles and don't forget, do not apply pressure. You'll be just fine!
Ummm Ms. King, u can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought breast feeding moms weren't supposed to be drinking alcohol? :S
i had a baby in nov-09 and played in tribe feb-10, my son was 3months old.
my advice would be this:
dont pump out, let the baby eat before you go out in the morning and youll be fine. Your boobs come to a point where they dont get any bigger, just harder, and then you can go to the bathroom and "hand milk" your boobs if they hurt. it can take a few minutes extra, but that way you dont have to ask a family member to drive by with a pump:) I did this at lunch break, didnt need to do it again.
If you start leaking, push your nipple a few seconds and it will stop. crazy, but it does! i had no problem with wet bras during my carnival.
i couldnt drink much alcohol at all, almost none. i tried but my body refused it, it tasted horrible and wouldnt go down. Im guessing this is a natural reaction, so dont count on getting your money´s worth if your playin all inclusive;)lol
since i went more than 12 hours without breastfeeding both monday and tuesday, my boobs almost stopped producing milk on ash wednesday, they adapt quickly to what they think is a baby who doesnt eat as much anymore. Dont worry, the milk came back after about three days, so make sure you have formula at home to give as extra food those days.
and dont listen to the nay sayers. time with family is great, but to be a great mom you have to take care of yourself too! if that means two days of party, go ahead!! thinking of your little one is not a problem, you wont be uncomfortable on the road.
and what JJ said: dont pump too much, youll end up producing double amount super fast! do pump when you get home tuesday, and then wednesday and thursday to get the flow going again if you have the same problem as i did!
Keep your breasts home, you can have too much mas on the road.... Get your priorities right lady. Good luck with motherhood.
@stupes: so being a good mom is about always staying at home with your child? never go out til when? how old is old enough for the baby to be without its mom for 10hrs?
not having time away from your child to do grown up things will drive you crazy.
as someone before me said- if it was work we were talking about, it would be fine, but if a mom wanna enjoy herself, it means shes not a good mom. ridiculous.
Ms. DQ you take care of yours and i'll take care of mine! A lactating mom does'nt necessary mean a breast feeding mom. I'll see you in church Ash Wednesday!
I think she should just play on Tuesday and half day Monday, because the baby will be 6 months by then. 6 months is when the baby is by the nursery since 3months ago and mommy is at work. Her body may be exhausted faster but if she works out she may get fit. So lady my advice to u is play your mass but just not WHOLE day monday. Come out when it is cool on monday afternoon and on tuesday leave early and be back home early on tuesday. Play with smaller bands like Ronnie and Caro or even smaller. Remember WeeWee Trucks and have a family member on hand !
@ DQ, once the alcohol leaves your system, there is none remaining in the milk and it is safe to breastfeed at that point.
@squeezle I get different information about that, so to be sure, l pump out the milk if ive been drinking:)
yes Hedvig, I used to "pump and dump". That is conventional wisdom among breastfeeding circles.
Pump and dump is the way to go! Yes you can drink alcohol while you are breastfeeding, you just have to be very careful about when you feed baby after you've had a drink. Alcohol metabolizes out of the breast milk in almost the same way that it metabolizes out of your blood stream.
Masquerading Mom, I think you've gotten lots of good advice from people on what to do! It's about your comfort level, because remember a boob full of milk can be very painful indeed! Are the baby's caregivers going to be around Port of Spain somewhere, so maybe you can take a break to go pump (and dump)?
To other people, please! What's the big deal about a nursing mother taking a day or two off to go enjoy herself? In my opinion, it's her prerogative to do so! If you all think that every mother who is around her child 24/7 is 100% happy to do so without a break, then you are deluding yourselves; some women need some time away from their babies and are better mothers for it. Stop behaving like she's abandoning her child to mistreatment!
In case the new mum plans to drink on the road: Milkscreen.
I'd imagine that she'd need to submit her specialty bra to the mas camp if she's breastfeeding, as her mamms would be engorged, and she'd need proper support for jumping up. She'd have to make a guess at the required size, however.
These two tips are in addition to the other suggestions posted previously. Am thinking that all the nay-sayers should lighten up on the judgment and the guilt trips. Sheesh! What's wrong with spending a few hours enjoying herself while having someone else care for her baby?
Masquerading Mom,
My daughter my born in January, and I played mas a few weeks later in February. I fed her before I left for the road, wore breast pads while jumping up, hand expressed if the boobies got too hard, and fed her when I got back home.
Of course my very old school mother cuss me stink and guilt tripped the hell out of me, LOL, But I did not care. I had a ball. It was just the release I needed after 9 months of carrying a baby.
The only risk to this behavior is that your child will become a mas junkie. The soca will get into your milk and transfer to the chile. LOL
That was 19 years ago, and that same baby who got left home, now telling me how she wanna wear thong for 2K11. STEUPS!
You will be fine, and so will the baby.
Kudos to you for wanting to breastfeed your baby. I know it’s a gift that a lot of new mothers want to give their newborns but are unable to. As a mother who breastfed two kids my suggestion would be to pump in advance. Make sure you have sufficient supplies for the baby for couple of days. You would not need formula if you have expressed enough milk in advance. As a working mom who worked 10 and 11 hour days I had to do this anyway and I managed to nurse up until my kids were 10 and 11 months and they were ready to transition to regular milk. The 2 days you spend on the road may be challenging only from the standpoint that you may need to express at sometime during the day. A small handheld pump may be your savior. Express and toss! So what if you have a 6month old and you want to play mas? Come out on Monday and Tuesday and you have a time!
MM, I found this article (updated since my daughter was born two years ago) that talks about breastfeeding and alcohol consumption -- if anyone is interested.
http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/alcohol.html
Masquerading Mom,
Ignore all these people trying to tell you that playing mas (or anything else that you consider an important part of your life) is inappropriate while you are breastfeeding!!! As a health professional it frustrates me that society puts so many restrictions on lactating women that it actually gets in the way of some women feeding their children with nature's perfectly balanced nutrition. Kudos to you for doing what's right for you child.
I find it interesting that ppl assumed you intended to drink when your question had nothing to do with that, lol. However if you do intend to partake of a libation or two (or twenty!!) you may find the following article reassuring. http://www.llli.org/FAQ/alcohol.html . The most important quote I find in it is "The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs considers alcohol compatible with breastfeeding." Just make sure to drink PLENTY OF WATER as well.
As to your comfort and the leaking issues. My best advice would have already been stated by others. SUPPORTIVE BRA, SUPPORTIVE BRA, SUPPORTIVE BRA would be the most important thing - with good pads inserted in them and changed as necessary. Then simply expressing milk (which you would definitely have become adept at by then) should take care of any engorgement related discomfort. Have fun on the road!!!!
Im DUE to have my SOn in teh next two weeks. To me, mas will always be there. But a valid point was brought up.. when Im at work all day, it's the same concept.*sigh* Don't know what I will do.... But I am grateful to see many opinions so valid.. I am now rethinking my decision to stay at home with my tabanca.
I had my daughter in September and played in February and my solution was to wean her off the breast by February....I know its selfish but really and truly I personally wasnt always that big on breastfeeding and I fugured she got the first three months on antioxidant protection so I was good. She was 3 months old...happy with her Enfamil and mommy was happy with her Johnny Walker lol
But it really is a personal decision and like most said please ignore those that think the fact you want to play mas is directly related to how good of a mom you are. You were a person with interests and passions before and that doesnt change when you have a baby!
Saucy I just wanted to commend you on the timeliness or your posting this during World Breastfeeding Week which ran August 1-7th this year. Kudos!
