One of my readers sent me the following email about the influence of "Brazilian" culture in terms of risqué and revealing costuming in Trinidad Mas and all other Carnivals derived from Trinidad Mas. We have the wire bra as a staple now in costuming and for Labor Day 2010 the
"Tapasexo" or
"Brazilian C String" was debuted, sure to see it making it's way to Trinidad Carnival 2011!
Brazilian Tapasexo
There are already over 100 comments on the Tapasexo over at the
Trinidad Carnival Diary Fan Page on Facebook, it is a HOT topic and if you want to see how the Tapasexo works you can visit
Samba Costumes as Jean Cool was responsible for the design, Ramajay Mas for the decoration (congrats on your win for Band of the Year!

On the Road in Ramajay
I would like to know if it's possible if you would like to start a discussion about carnival and censorship... what I mean is this- our carnival is transforming into a Brazilian type Carnival with wire bras, going topless, and rocking a tapasexo, getting on (pure jamminish style) in front of the eyes of children, elderly and other conservative spectators... do you think that Carnival is really getting out of hand??
And with crime situations, do you think some women (those that are wearing topless, wirebras, thong etc.) are encouraging harm or danger to themselves??
It's just a thought of mine since I noticed that we (as masqueraders) love to be free out on the road, but I do noticed that some spectators were upset and even frowned on the behavior...
So, leave your thoughts and comments , please note PERSONAL attacks and derogatory comments will be removed; make your point without having to insult anyone, thanks!

Steupes...
i agree with bears.. mas is mas if you have on ah setta cloth or just ah setta gems and ah poonkie cup... is still mas.once there is no law breaking involved then hey go for it.
Wait is going topless for carnival breaking the law???
you cant censor mas, History will tell you that. I always argue it is a gauge of the society, Trinidadians have been trading there culture for others for years now, since the mid 90's from the time bikini mas took centre stage we all saw this coming no shock no ban no foul It is what it is..the future we always feel we need to catch up with the world bikini mas wire bras topless now Tapasexos tell dem we reach!! next stop
Vajazzling
Trinidad's carnival is evolving. It's not necessarily that it's "becoming Brazilian" but certainly the influence is there in some of the bands... NOT all. So masqueraders have more choices and the more choices the better. If some masqueraders want to wear wire bras, thongs, tapasexos... etc... what's the problem? Personally I don't like the look of the tapasexo and I certainly do not have the body for it... but if some women like it and they have the bodies... then all power to them. The women featured in this post look good!
About masquerading in front of children in these costumes... again, what is the problem. We dance half naked in the streets in bikinis and beads while kids "wine down" to soca music at the side of the road. This has been part of the culture for a very long time. Since I was a child watching mas in town, I understood that carnival was the time for "freedom" and I could not wait to one day join "big people mas". It had nothing to do with being naked or scandalous but to join in the festivity that I grew up admiring. The point is children in Trinidad know the distinction between carnival and the rest of the year.
Trinidadian society is complicated to a point. Why is it okay to dance in the streets in a bra and panty covered in beads but not a bra and thong?
About crime- I think that is actually a good point. Men with "rum in dey head" might find a sexy woman in a tapasexo hard to resist and heckling can soon turn into something else. But this happens even when we're wearing regular costumes! So if a woman is a bit more scantily clad than the rest then she knows she's taking a risk and should takes measures to ensure that she'll be okay... )always moving with her group etc).
Whether we like it or not certain elements in carnival are here to stay. Yuma's Leo FL G-string was a shocker for me but lots of women were drawn to it. And that's okay! Live and let live! We all enjoy mas in our own ways!!!
I do think that soem people take it to the out of hand level. I do not think that the majority of persons, playing mas or spectating want this near nekedness trend. I do believe Carnival is an artform and art should not be sensored. But unlike say movies where we can rate it and attempt to monitor what our children are exposed this parade is in the streets for ALL eyes to see. We have had this dicussion many times and I know some people would think that it is not their responsibility to raise anyone's children but call me a conservative socialist if you may. I not going to roller blade in a thong and bikini top in front of a playground. Time and place is all I hadda say. Time and place
Well said Egypt! Well said...
As Chris mentioned Carnival is evolving and the mas entities are following suit. It does not matter how much or how less of a costume is advertised, the masquarader will ultimately make the final decision as to what part of the costume to modify.
For instance, in Ramajay Mas, the costume was advertised with a wire bra and regular panties. However, the lady (sorry I forgot her name) made the choice to modify the costume by adding the Tapasexo and in her case she pulled it off. She even colaborated with the section leader on having it co-ordinate with her costume perfectly. In my opinion as long as the respective section designer has no problem with it, then I have no problem with it.
If designers were having a problem with all the modification that masqueraders were making to their costumes (adding backpacks, adding feathers and other things of that nature), they would have implemented a "no modification to the provided costume or else you get kick out the band Monday and Tuesday" rule a long time ago.
As far as the "getting on" when it's Carnival time, you cannot blame the costumes for that type of behavior. While culture does have some influence on our dance, it is individual decisions and parental/peer influences that determines individual behavior. If you grew up in a household where "getting on dutty" was/is the norm, then of course that individual will find nothing wrong with doing so. Whatever the parent/peer does, an individual would most likely follow suit.
Crime is crime and it would happen regardless of if I have on a long sleeve dress covering my toes or parading on the streets in a bikini. I have yet to see any research that has been done(correct me if I'm wrong) that suggests a crime spike compared to other months of the year.
Just my (long) two cents.
I agree that you can’t sensor art. But when does art cross the line into lewdness and poor taste? The parade in Rio takes place in an arena called the Sambodromo, and as far as I’ve been told by people who have been there, spectators can’t get access to the performers who are down below on the stage. So all you can do is watch the parade and enjoy the music and dancing while you sit in the stands. It’s completely different in T&T, Toronto and NYC. Those parades take place on the road where drunk and disorderly spectators have more of a chance to touch you and try to wine up on you. That’s a problem. And if you’re half naked, you’re going to get the brunt of the attention from these out of control people. Yes, you should be able to wear what you want without being groped…but if you’re half naked in the road, wining down to the ground, bare a** cock back, all eyes and cameras WILL be focused on you.
For some bands I think that they’ve lost the “art” part of costume design and are now more into the “shock value” part of it. It’s almost a point of “let’s see how far we can go without a masquerader being totally naked.” To me, that’s when you’ve crossed the line from art to poor taste. Call me conservative if you want to, but a cage bra, a thong and a feather backpack is not a costume.
Personally I find that our carnival has lost its creativity...Trinidad was once known for elaborate costumes that defied imagination...today its more about shock value and seeing how well you can walk the line between lewd and acceptable.
Nothing is wrong with bikini, thong, tapasexo etc....BUT when the costume IS JUST a bikini or thong, we need to draw a line somewhere.
Male costumes have devolved into a boardshorts alone....no creativity but surprisingly there has not been a surge in male thongs or briefs on the road.....perhaps that too will change.
In terms of behaviour....you cant tell adults what they can and cannot do, BUT people do need to execrcise good juedgement. I will never forget a carnival when I saw a full figured middle aged woman gyrate and bubble in the middle of frederick street (by the roundabout) and EVERYONE including the men were appauled by her behaviour.
Ultimately Trinidad carnival is the best there is and as it continues to evolve....who knows even bikini mas may die out....
Once the tapasexos and wire bras are donned by the right body type I have zero issues with them.
However, like Lisa, I'm looking at the tapasexos from a practicality viewpoint. It works in Brazil because the Samba queens are in a protected space, her safety is not compromised. You now in POS, Brooklyn, Miami etc parading on the streets. Who's protecting you, the man holding up the rope? And when mas done and you're left in the middle of Ariapita ave or somewhere downtown, how your naked behind staying safe from drunk or truly unruly folks?
Plus the Samba dance does NOT include a cock back and roll; lift yuh leg up and wine. Now do all that in a wire thong and is crotch fuh so in people face. I'm sorry but that's not art. And it's not a reality to expect a woman who might drink liquor in her all-inclusive glory and maintain a prim composure whole day. And resist the urge to go down low. It's West Indians we talking about here (for the most part).
Added to that, I heard that those wire bras overheat in the broiling Trini sun, and burn one's skin badly. Remember now, the Rio queens are parading at night, not in the hot sun like us.
Tapasexos etc may be great for some to look at but it's not very practical for our mas.
Steups. She looked fab on the road and who doh like it stay home. No one should even be talking about censorship when it comes to mas when we dancing, whining, jooking and gyrating to many sexually suggestive soca songs. Of all of us in the band, this lady was the one carrying on in a more "acceptable" manner i.e. she wasn't skinning up, cocking back, etc.- all the rest of us were.
IMO, mas is about you and doing you. You want to go out in pasties and glitter, by all means do so. Once your body looking right, why not? We need not pass judgment on others about the choices they make especially if they are grown people. If you don't want to see it, don't look. I've always been an avid believer that children on the road for Carnival is a no-no so there is nothing else for me to say about that.
As far as encouraging harm or disrespect, some men will have it predetermined in their mind to disrespect or harm a woman no matter how she dresses. What she has on, especially on Carnival day, isn't making a difference.
All in all, people will have their opinions. No one is more right than the other. But needless to say, she looked fab on the road and who didn't like it, oh well.
Art is Art..... However what I appreciate as art you may find vulgar...
I think the human body is one of the most beautiful pieces of art there is... The woman in the picture, simply put..Stunning !!!! I didn't focus on any one thing but the totality of it all.. Yes, it may not be for everyone, but I say let her be to do her thing !!!
Hey Niecy, thanks for the hypocrisy there. "mas is about you and doing you"..."Once your body looking right, why not? We need not pass judgment on others about the choices they make"
So nakedness is only acceptable if your body looking right?
Censor ship is a no no, but as mentioned previously the line should be drawn at some point.
The problem I have is the whole Trini identity crisis thing, where once again what foreign is better.
With respect to crime, this yr I was constantly paranoid, especialy for J'ouvert. The crowds are getting worse. I've seen entire bands disrupted from drunken pests masqueraders and non-masqueraders, so a rope man can't help you if things get bad. I you are gonna be "more" naked than people around you, please take some extra pre-cautions, things aren't the way they used to be.
So I keep reading "once they have the right body ...". What is the right body? What exactly are we saying here? Please be mindful of how hypocritical that is.
If you say that it should not be censored, then it should not be censored for everyone not just some. Of course we all have or personal views on what is pleasing to the eye etc, but you can't dream to be taken seriously and make a strong argument if you are being biased
Well put it this way, and you're entitled to your opinion. But If you complaining about wire bras and everything else, shouldn't you complain about wining at carnival too? I wouldn't care what kind of wine it is, I wouldn't want my young ones wining up on each other.
I also played with Ramajay and I saw her, she looked great. But again if you're gonna pick at all those things you mentioned, you can argue that wining is even worse. Now who you go get to stop wining at Carnival? Lol
I don't know why we're so afraid of the human body, we make it worse on our children by making the human body seem like some dirty little secret. If you have a child, just be a parent and draw the line between what's for grown ups and what's for kids. Mommy kissing Daddy...for adults not for kids. Mommy sitting on Daddy's lap...for adults not for kids. Wining down di place? For adults not for kids. Etc. etc. etc., I have kids in my family and because we're up front with them and talk to them they know the deal.
So to sum up, I see nothing wrong with the things you mention. Carnival and mas is about so many things, freedom, celebrating the human body, being happy and positive, having love for your fellow masqueraders and your fellow human being, brightening the day with a smile, and so much more. It is what it is
Carnival is freedom,to wine as we damn well please? Right? We will never please everybody. Women's costumes have gotten nekidder each year. What one finds beautiful another finds distasteful. I don't see much difference between a bare ass thong and a tapasexo except the string on the hip, I may not be inclined to wear it, but others may consider it within their right especially as bands created skimpier sections for 2011.
In Brazil tapasexos are worn by a few "Queens" in the safety of the Sambadrome, not on the street , and when it falls off, as it often has, you are fined, since exposed genitalia is illegal in Brazil. I personally don't want any woman cocking up, exposing all her secrets on the street within view of my children, and she should be aware that many drunks would want to take liberties, we already have trouble with agressive stabbers! Re. wire bras, it's again a personal choice as the designs vary greatly in coverage. If decency is left up to individual taste we will end up with total nudity. I suppose it's up to the Band Leaders and the government. I personally love most designs of wire bras, but I hope the melongene breasted don't wear them!, so you see.... that is discriminatory. We should never legislate based on personal taste.I've heard that the C thong is very uncomfortable, as for the tapasexo,it has a dismal record of malfunctions, or being so small it was indetectable. Imagine that falling off on the jammed crammed streets of Trinidad, somebody going to take a good feel-up! Back in the day when Harts was the only bbf band I played in the "body beautiful" sections.... many thought it too skimpy then. It's funny that nowadays Harts has the most modest sections of the bbf bands..... Only legislation can draw the line. I say let Trini women flaunt their beauty to suit themselves within established laws of decency i.e. no exposed genitalia on the road.
I did catch that after the fact but anyway, mas IS about doing you. Once your body looking right why not? The fact is, speaking as a plus sized woman, most of us will not opt to do that. Not saying you have to be a size 2 but a 300+ pound woman would not be going that far. I myself test the boundaries all the time but you think you seeing me in someone's wire? NO. The ones that do it, what can we really say/do except tell them to prepare for the backlash? This is why I said to avoid the drama if you looking good enough/can pull it off- why not? IMO she looked good and in some ppl's eyes she still didn't so say what.
And body looking right is subjective because I had on a monokini and some people may say I shouldn't have done that. So what I may find looks good, others may find distasteful and vice versa.
And yes, I find Trinidadians (some not all) suffer from a major identity crisis. You could wine down half naked Carnival Mon and Tues in a bikini but cussing Ms. TnT for a picture she made a choice to take that was very tasteful. Some women there (and here) do panty and spray paint as their mas or just the top and bottom from their costumes but getting on this woman for wearing a tapasexo? Steups. If it's Americans Trinidad is trying to follow, seriously, we should be the last place they look for the "code" on morality.
Not to mention, we bastardize the human body and sexuality so much that we crying over ish like this? If we teach our children what mas really is, they would see it as nothing more than a variation. I've been seeing naked mas all my life and it hasn't phased me yet. Stop looking to others to show your children what's right from wrong. YOU tell them so if they see something, it wouldn't phase them. Worst comes to worst and it bothers you that much, cover their eyes or leave them home.
I honestly can see why some people will say that our Carnival is getting very Brazilian - but if people look beyond the wire bras and tapasexos, they would see that there is much more creativity in the Sambadrome than watching 3/4 of the mas bands in Trinidad and Tobago today. Thankfully we still have MacFarlane, sailor mas etc. Look at any photos of the Rio parade and while you will see some sexy ladies, you will often see dancers in very elaborate, sometimes very covered costumes that are usually ON THEME. Also, the type of dancing that we do for our carnival has been described as vulgar by many of my friends from South America - so everything is relative.
I think if a woman wants to express herself with a sexy c string, that's her business - but please, pull it off, cuz otherwise you're just a hot mess.
And please remember, the Rio parade is much shorter in duration that Trinidad carnival. Each samba school does their routine and its a wrap for them. So those things come off after a couple hours. I honestly dont see how someone can jump and wine and chip from sun-up to sun-down in that.
Ya know what, why people who doh like de wining coming in town to see it? I think it's hypocrisy, and to those who think it's because you won't brought up in a decent home, has anyone else noticed it's the ones with strict parents who do the most dutty wine?
To "Empath" who commented on the middle aged woman bubbling I say " You go girl" she ent dead yet. Is it her age and size that makes her wining distasteful? If some people had their way carnival would be a boring mess. Let who want to wear ten crocus bag for carnival do so and who want to be in a bare thong do so, until they get arrested I'm happy just to see so many happy people. I am very proud that I'm yet to see any other nationality outwine we!! no apologies... You're free to Stay home, close ya eyes, go to the beach, whatever, you do not have to look, but live and let live. At the end of the day it's those who hiding behind morality while abusing children or peeping at private parts through a hole for a price that I'm concerned about most.... enough already about the nakedness and the wining. Have you ever noticed how transfixed by the wining the complainers are?, they don't turn away while going umm um um um ooo! sigh
There is indecency, but everything about our bodies is not indecent, I will NEVER play my mas to suit anyone but myself, my standards of morality, I don't even drink alcohol for carnival. I have a blast stone sober, but I've overheard onlookers saying I'm drunk!MYOB and live and let live
I honestly LOVE LOVE LOVE these Samba queen costumes. I would wear them given the chance and its a matter of me being comfortable with my body, the freedom to wear such costume, me being able to afford such costume and me wanting to have a GREAT time in the blistering sun for two days.
I believe it's a culture thing and I know that Trinidad is still a bit conservative, but we also have a tendency to throw stones while we live in glass houses. We are VERY double standard and like to sway things to how WE like it based on our own convenience....
Again....I LOVE these costumes and wished we had those here. Oh and this is a lil link with a few more for those who care to watch :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWhaz9l79cY&feature=related
The costumes are great. I see no problem with the C-string or the Samba costumes, once whatever is worn does not break any of the laws of the land. I also think that since T&T's Carnival is more 'hands-on' whilst Brazil's is more a spectator-thing, that people need to think about that BEFORE they go out parading in any outfit.
Whilst we may want to think that society is civilised and that once we're playing our mas within the confines of a band, it is still men with ropes, and maybe some special security (a la TRIBE) between us and stormers. Stormers do find their way into the band.
Sooo use your judgement, don't run afoul of the laws...have your fun.
My $0.02
Someone mentioned cameras, which is a very valid point. In this age of social networking and media, with sites like Triniscene, Trini Jungle Juice and Lizzard Blizzard, to name only a few, you need to be EXTREMELY careful with the image you put out there. Because if you're caught out in an unfortunate position by one of the cameramen, I don't think you have any recourse whatsoever. A full nipple shot turns up on t'internet? Your own fault. Some cunning photographer manages to get a poonkie shot? Well, can't blame him for trying, can you? Some people seem to forget that they have lives to go back to after Carnival.
I am personally against this uber-sexualisation of our mas. I just don't like the direction it's taking. And like another commenter mentioned, we're losing our creativity. There have been distinctions made between Brazilian and our mas, and these need to be taken into careful consdieration. This is a case of what's good for the goose not necessarily being good for the gander.
BBF already has it's opponents, and things like tapasexos only give them more ammunition. But while I will personally never wear a tapasexo or a wire bra, I know I can't do anything to stop someone from wearing them. I just find the costume looks incomplete and unbalanced without a waistpiece (and even these super-skimpy belts are a bit much for me).
If someone decides they're brave enough to wear a tapasexo on the road, just make sure you have a seriously thick skin, because you're going to be in for a lot of whispering and pointing and criticism. But if you're comfortable with it, who am I to judge?
Well, as long as it's not illegal, it really boils down to a matter of taste. And as someone said earlier, what I find tasteful, someone else might find vulgar.
Personally, I find a bikini more tasteful that pasties and a tapasexo because I like some things left to the imagination. That's just me. I know there are others who will disagree. And that's fine.
I also agree with the issue of practically raised by previous commenters. I have no idea how a tapasexo stays on. I suppose it might work for the posers, but I envision some zesty woman doing a split on Charlotte Street and then the tapasexo remains on the ground....
By all means, do you. It's your right. But with rights come responsibilities. If you're wearing less, you need to be even more aware of the camera, groping hands, etc.
Dino, that was a well-aticulated and well-balanced statement. Not everyone will agree with the portrayal of the tapasexo, but just know if that is your cup of tea, it comes with a slew of opinions, supporters and bashers.
That is all!
I giggle every time I read Dino's comment..."but I envision some zesty woman doing a split on Charlotte Street and then the tapasexo remains on the ground...."
Truly, I'm a live-and-let-live girl, but I too wonder about the logistics of a tapasexo...how does it stay up?
As a Jamaican, I can't really comment on the evolution of Trinidadian mas and the incorporation of Brazilian elements being a positive or negative...I can only draw a parallel of how Jamaicans were up in arms at the introduction of Trinidad mas in Jamaica, those of us who thought "what's wrong with it?" were in the minority and how people thought traditional cultural events such as Jonkanoo were being lost in the commercial onslaught of costumed revelry in the streets...and on a Sunday, no less. You couldn't imagine the criticism that abounded...and still does to this day.
The only constant is change
Pearse (1956: 22) cites a Gazette editorial response to a letter written by a
citizen employing the pen-name Scotchman. From the editorial response, it is clear
that Scotchman was opposed to lower class African masquerade in the 1838 Carnival
and the editor in turn targets Africans as the source of the disorder in Carnival:
“We will not dwell on the disgusting and indecent scenes that were enacted in
our streets–we will not say how many we saw in a state so nearly approaching
nudity as to outrage decency and shock modesty-we will not particularly
describe the African custom of carrying a stuffed figure of a woman on a pole,
which was followed by hundreds of negroes yelling out a savage Guinea song
(we regret to say that nine-tenths of the people were Creoles)–we will not
describe the ferocious fight between the ‘Damas’ and the ‘Wartloos’ which
resulted from this mummering–but we will say at once that the custom of
keeping Carnival by allowing the lower order of society to run about the
streets in wretched masquerade belongs to other days, and ought to be
abolished in our own
I thought this so interesting I thought I would share this letter sent to the gazette in 1838. It seems like this issue will always be with us.
I share the same concerns as Dino and others.
I don't know if I can agree with that. A mini skirt or dress for example gives no one the right to grope, harass, or attack you
So...in the same way unless it's breaking the laws, a certain outfit gives no one the right to kneel and get a picture of your crotch...or harass and bash you. I do agree with the practicality aspect, I mean if you wearing a tapasexo and you don't wanna be completely naked, what in heavens name would make you do a split? LOL
Am I the only one with that vision of a woman doing a split stuck in my head.....
And probably will go to bed dreaming of the courageous event...... Too funny !!!
@Richard, Dino's tapasexo comment is killing me, you're not the only one!
For those of you asking who would do a split on the road, I suggest you look at this video :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIU5ll86pjc
@ Saucy re: the You Tube video - all I can say is "WOW!!" Now imagine that chick who did the split then stood on her head, wearing a Taposexo and a wire bra...trouble!
When you want to misbehave like that AND be half naked in the road, don't be mad when you end up on You Tube or on somebody's website. And don't complain about people taking your picture.
With "freedom" and "freeing up yourself" comes responsibility and sometimes repercussions. As long as you can handle it, do you.
OMG NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!
THAT VIDEO!!!
I can't believe...is that a Trini who dropped down in a split? Um, that is not Trinidad culture, it is not part of our mas, and it is not respecting yourself as a woman.
Please respect yourselves ladies.
And I saw the tapasexo person in that video also. She was putting down an extremely stush wine, which is just sad, she could barely move up and down and most definitely not side to side.
I read the facebook comments, how she is a seasoned masquerader etc. and it seems she just had an idea-how can I take nakedness even further, oh I know!!! A crotch cage!!!
And the end result is, even if you feel to bust a wine or palance, you cannot. Very sad in my opinion.
Lol. I thought the video was gonna be some drastic or wrong blooper moment but she had on a typical costume. Like I said, if you wearing a tapasexo and you don't wanna be completely naked, what in heavens name would make you do a split?
carnival is a time of freedom and expression. Persons can expect as the years role on, external factors will affect or impact costume styles as well as behaviour. In my opinion an open mind is the key. you will always agree and disagree with something. Just do your best an enjoy the festival!!!
