The following are two sections from Glenn Carvalho's Carnival 2011 presentation "Valley of the Nile" which was due to be launched in October. No word from the band on the new launch date, hopefully this and more costume photos will be released soon.

Loving it so far...the motif of the double-feather crown and the Maat feather - good details. very keen to see more!
Carvalho is bringing back Mas to what it used to be. Stay tune for more, lots more. And all Carvalho Mas Costumes are hand crafted in Trinidad.
eh Jenifer? Is what yuh say? Did he start this 'bringing back Mas' last year (2010 Carnival) with these precious gems?: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_za0j8qH0lRc/Sv06Savrz7I/AAAAAAAAOeE/SKPg278uzck/s1600-h/glenn1.JPG

Wonderful!!!!
i confused? im all for bringing Real Mas back to Trini Carnival but do we literally have to go back to the 80's and 90's style wise? high belts, big collors, its all a bit of a cliche and something we have seen so many times before, these have got to be the ugliest Most dated costumes i have seen for the year alongside dkrewe's drums frontline.
Redgirl if you were for bringing back Real Mas then you would be praising the man for hand making his costumes in our country. Or do you prefer not to support the locals and give our money to China and pay outrageous prices? I have to respectfully disagree with your remark pertaining to the big collars and high belts. I don’t see that and I think you’re just hating on the man. He is portraying Egypt and in case you are new to playing Mas a bands presentation is to tell a story representative through the costumes. His choice of color, section names, symbols, and stories all weave themselves together with one story line, so no Redgirl we have not seen this done many times before. The other bands from what I can see don’t have the detailing that this man is showing us. Just give a look at his headpieces. Tell me which band you have seen that is giving you craftsmanship like this? Also, the males costumes really surprised me because it looks like Carvalho listened to the guys when they said they wanted more than board shorts. I do somewhat agree on dkrewe’s drum line I don’t think it’s the ugliest, but it does not represent the bands portrayal. I will end with this that the classics always return and they do so for the people. Outside of our little world of Carnival the fashion world gets this why don’t you Redgirl?
looks more like Hollywood version of Egypt to me. I guess he is making all his materials in Trinidad if not every feather, trim, material used in those costumes are ALL coming from China so can we just bury this made in China debate? nothing is made in Trinidad anyway so please this Made In China argument is null and void
You can’t null and void the China argument Ria. But I do agree that certain materials that you suggested obviously are not made in Trinidad. I should clarify myself in saying that the craftsman ship is what I was referring to. I just can’t accept the fact of costumes being mass produced by foreigners and not our own people. There is something so very special about knowing that our people used their talents to hand make what I am wearing.
I like what I am seeing from this band. I am usually a big band girl, but the quality of the costumes have me rethinking. Looking for the prices????
circatrini, you seem like you the defence for this band?
i aint jus reach when it comes to mas and i have the ability to look at a costume from an artistic point of view. yes the headresses are okish but they come across very flat and lack luster, most of them seem to be based on a generic Design with a vaccum formed shape inserted into the centre which takes no real skill to create as most of them moulds are available to buy off the shelf in woodbrook!
I am all for locally made costumes, Carvalho is not the only band producing locally made costumes, Trini Revellers, Dkrewe, D Harvard, Legacy, Dream Team, Pulse8 and Macfarlane all produce costumes locally.
The china argument is totally dead in my books, 95% of materials used in costumes come from China and as far as i am aware the big bands like Tribe, IP, Yuma and Spice all still produce major parts of the presentations right here in Trinidad. China Dont Make headresses, Backpacks, shoulder pieces and Male Costumes.
some of your other points make no sense, again Egypt is a Theme done to death and Carvlho is no Exception to this Mas Pioneer or not, there comes a point when every mas man and woman needs to hang up thier design shoes.
So red are you stating Hart, McFarlane and others old time mas names need to hang up their design shoes too?
Should we surrender to a "newer" generation who forget the basics and let's throw a name out there and bring a costume that has no ryme or reason.
As many have stated there is a mas out there for everyone this may not be for you
If you can do better bring it I would love to see it
Red I think you are being a bit defensive and just reading too much into what circa is saying. I don't think the person is defending this Carvalho band they just like the costumes. I don't want to get in the middle of the banter, but let's move on. The costumes are gorgeous. I can envision the band crossing the stage and the gold etc. shining. I usually play with Trini Revellers, but I am not feeling the theme this year. I have always wanted to play something Egypt.
i agree with betty. as much as im part of the bikini n beads generation, there is nothing wrong with holding on to the more traditional types of mas....so if the older mas makers are to hang up their shoes, does that mean indian, sailor, fireman etc mas players should also?
personally, while the costumes arent my personal style, i gotta give the man kudos for picking a theme...and sticking to it completely. besides, if we're gonna groan about themes being done repeatedly then most bands would have to bow out of 2011 because most(save for a few) have been done repeatedly for the last 20 yrs so who cares. as long as u dont recycle a theme and make it worse im cool :)
