Warrior Props On The Cheap

I know that many people were pretty disappointed to learn that the shields, swords and daggers photographed with costumes in TRIBE's Way of the Warrior and Bliss' Warrior Within were just props. Meaning that if you wanted to dress up your costume and play warrior you would need to fork out some extra cash for these extras. Well, if you are in Trinidad, take a visit to the Super 10 store on upper Frederick Street ( right after Duke Street on the left, headed North) because they have toy weapons for all of $10.00TT that can surely work with your costume. I am liking the small shield and sword, light easy to carry and some kid is going to be pretty happy when you tire of it and decide to give it away. How can you go wrong for only $1.50US?

why would anyone want to hold those things in their hands! eweee.. Its looks good as props in the pics to enhance the "worrior theme".. but unless I can have add ons that stays on the arms or legs, it makes no sense.. plus those things are 99cents here in the US.. OH HELL NO! A DIFINITE FASHIONISTA NO NO...

Excellent point Socaholic. If TRIBE and BLISS were to use those props for Carnival, they tread the fine line between looking like masqueraders vs Halloween partygoers/trick or treaters. The only section that can correctly pull that off is Massai Warriors and that's ONLY they were a part of Brian Mc Farlane's band and the accompanied theatrics. But really...who in TRIBE is gonna tote that big ass stick and cloth all day long in the hot blazin sun for no reason?? Come on now...you just winin...you aint really going to war...2 votes for a DEFINITE FASHIONISTA NO NO!!

Just curious, have you never seen Carnival bands in Trinidad depicting themes and using Swords and Shields, especially Harts? The guys especially love the props by the way! And yes they even carry them ON the road; See photographic evidence below:

Anyway I have a creative vision for use of swords and shields, they can be used for just Monday, embellished, made to sling on your back or hip... it's Carnival, time to let creativity run free! Not everyone has to share this vision, it is quite ok to disagree in how the Warrior should be portrayed!

Can anyone say George Bailey?

This has such a beautiful authenticity that only comes with attention to the details such as the weapons etc --- "props"

To each his own, I agree, but revelry and showmanship can definitely include "props"

I think this is a gerat find Saucy. I think bkini mas is really dying for a little creativity and since so many of these warrior costumes have tons of feathers, some props may actually help make the costumes look more warrior-like. Masqueraders can also look for creative ways to have the shields and swords attached to their costumes, maybe across their backs to avoid unnecessary hassle.

I'm all for creativity and I applaud the use of props for the sake of being creative. But when a masquerader decides to wear a costume down to every detail including the props, there an "expectation" for him/her to become the "character" in that costume. And if ur using props just to wine, go dung, drink up, and behave wotless...well sorry guys, like I said before, u look like the average person partying in a Halloween costume. If u want the ultimate in creativity with props and all, then get creative in how u play ur mass. Cause that's what Carnival was all about in the first place.

That's exactly what I would use the sword for ---- to go dung with. How's that for a "prop". Lol
Nothing wrong with bringing out your inner Sparticus and She-ra, a la George Bailey etc. I say bring on the weapons for some authenticity. The choice is yours.

I am actually thrilled for Tribe in 2011 because if they were to compete I am sure they could place. This theme is creative. Bliss is a different story though :/

I think the use of props would DEFINATELY enhance the male costumes. I envsision many men playing He-man, Thor, Conan...HIYA!

Massai warriors still remains my favourite section and I think if people could get authentic looking shields and spears...that section will look FIERCE on the road.

I can't believe that you have to add more costume to your costume with Tribe's prices.

Yall good yes!
