The following email is from one of my readers. I am totally clueless about how one travels with enough makeup that it needs to be checked as luggage because when I travel I usually just walk with primer, foundation, powder, two compacts of eye makeup, brow pencil, a few lip glosses, two lipsticks, one liner, and one mascara that all fits very neatly into a small makeup bag tossed into my handbag! So, if you have any advice for this makeup Diva please share by leaving a comment below!

Over the years, my makeup bag has become a huge problem when traveling on vacation especially for Carnival. I do all of my friend’s makeup, so I make sure and pack everything. In 2009 my honey had to pay the extra baggage fee just for my makeup and accessories bag. This year I have decided not to over do it and purchase these color palettes that everyone’s raving about and nix traveling with all of my pigment, eye shadows, and lipsticks. I am just trying to bring the basics with out having to do a MAC run (like I did in 2010 and spent $250US). What do other Carnival diva’s that do their own makeup pack for traveling?

I end up doing friend's makeup, esp on carnival monday. I get around carrying everything by making my friends carry their own make-up for carnival. We have convos before hand so that they have every color, jewel & eyelash that they need. That way I only carry my own make-up/pigments, spirit gum, lash glue and an extra bag with all my brushes, brush cleaner & some primer. Makes for a much lighter load.
It depends how professional you are trying to be & whether you are charging for your services. I only do my friend's faces & I don't charge.
If you really want to bring all your own proper makeup, why don't you have your friends chip in for the extra baggage fee, since they're going to be benefitting from it?
I agree with mjsbunny, if u were just bringing all that for ur self its one thing, but ur putting urself in expense to help ur friends. i have a friend tht brings in little things like gems and stuff for me but if my stuff caused her to have to pay the overweight fee, i would def pay her some sort of compensation because she is my friend and didnt have to put herself thru the added expense.
I'm not a makeup diva, but I've noticed some ppl storing their pigments in pill boxes (the weekly ones)and then labeling the pill boxes with the shade. I don't know if that helps, but it may be easier than carrying around lots of little bottles.
I say let the friends bring their own. Let them know the preferred brands that u think works best.
i hear you with the makeup dilemma too. i do my own mostly, having taken a few makeup courses as a hobby, here and there. i dont travel for carnival thank God as i still live here in TT. however i do relate to when i travel for other carnivals and vacation in general. i would suggest 2 things. get a good travel size makeup kit that you can use as part of your hand luggage, along with your handbag and handluggage suitcase, for eg: a caboodles kit, which comes with the sections. mine in a 12 x 14 inch and fits ALMOST everything that i need for myself. since you're doing makeup for others as well maybe you can suggest to them to buy their shades in foundation, powder, and a few eye shadows, mascara, liner of their own, which will lessen your load. failing that, i agree, let them pitch in to help you pay for the extra piece. if you suggest this they may well buy some of their own, as really, you should not take the risk to check in makeup...the suitcase handlers dont care if the label says fragile...trust me!! failing all that...walk with the real necessities, and your own supply and though its more expensive, let them buy a few things here and there in Trinidad...a little more expensive but still available. Mac is in West Mall, and downtown POS has quite a few places that carry all the brands
Let your friends bring their own stuff. For yourself, pack your palette --- an 88-color palette like the ones from Coastal Scents has great color payoff and it's lightweight. And pack that in your handbag or carryon as that's the most fragile item. If your palette is matte with no metallics, then pack your metallic colors as your ONLY extra eyeshadows (preferably a quad). I definitely pack eyeshadow primer and face primer, foundation, face powder, blush, a small setting spray, 1 neutral color gloss and lipstick and 2 colorful ones, makeup brushes, and that's it. That list will fill only half of a train case.
To me makeup shouldn't take up a lot; it's the toiletries that make up the weight (for a 2 week stay travel sizes will not cut it). That's what I do.
