TLC Activation update
Further to my post below let it be known that I did try to activate my TLC card this morning and it finally worked.. yay!!! To activate your card text the 10 digit TLC number located to the top right hand side of the card to 4422.
Once you send the TLC number you should receive a text message like this:
So, as you can see you NEED to activate your card to activate your ticket.. so get cracking on that if you want to get into the venue on Saturday!
Once you send the TLC number you should receive a text message like this:
Congratulations your TRIBE Loyalty Card (TLC) has now been registered & your TRIBE launch ticket has been activated. Sat 28th July '07 @ Pier 1, 10pm.

The Saga of the TLC cards....
Somehow I have become the official "go to" girl AGAIN this Carnival season for my friends, and with band launching hot on the heels I am getting lots of calls as if I am working in TRIBE's mas camp!! The most pressing issue being discussed is TRIBE's TLC Cards. Apparently LOTS of people , including myself, are having trouble activating their TLC cards and getting frustrated with the "invalid command" text message that comes up, even when all instructions are followed.
Eventually, after harassing the workers at the mas camp, I called the hot line number given to me by them and the person who answered verified that the system was not ready and would be up "later". Well that call was made on Friday and up to yesterday afternoon I STILL could not activate my card, when I called the hot line AGAIN the person who answered was still saying it should be able to activate "later". I have yet to re try so I don't know if it actually works as yet.
Now, from what I gather activation is necessary to enter the venue on Saturday, upon questioning the TRIBE employees about the possibility of forgetting to activate the card they assured me that a manual list would be at the door for all those who paid and collected their TLC cards. While this sounds like a solid back up plan can you imagine if out of 2000 people only 500 actually bothered to continue trying with activation and the rest gave up either thinking that activation was not necessary or knowing that there would be a "list" at the door? I can foresee in that event that the entrance to Pier 1 would be just a huge mob of irate people having to wait to enter while someone manually scans a list of hundreds of names.
The other thing that my friends are concerned about and have expressed to me is that some of them have not made up their minds about going to the launch and as a result they are yet to pick up their TLC cards knowing they would have to pay for a ticket. Consequently this means waiting to decide at the last possible minute if they would go to the launch or not. The question I have been asked is if they can still get the discounted price of $180.00 without the TLC card. As far as I can tell, no TLC means no discount and thus they would have to fork over the $240.00 general admission price for their procrastination. My friend was most upset to hear this as she is waiting on a complimentary ticket and is in limbo as if to pay for a ticket that she might never have cause to use.
My hairdresser also called asking about tickets to the launch and when I mentioned the TLC card to her she was in shock, having never received an email about this. Her sister in law, who resides in New York, did the registration for both of them and did not get any email about registering for a TLC card. Needless to say they BOTH missed the deadline and my hairdresser was told that overseas masqueraders would not be getting TLC cards until after the launch. Her situation ended well as when she called the mas camp she was told to walk with I.D. and collect her tickets and TLC card.
The sentiment I am getting is that while the new TLC "smart" card is probably a good idea in theory people prefer things simple and easy, like being able to purchase a ticket on a whim without having to "load"money unto an electronic card. Having a TLC card and remembering to register for it, collect it, activate it and keep it safe at all times is proving too much work for people who cannot see any immediate benefit from doing so!

New Look TLC Card
I am now in possession of my TLC "smart" card which is proving to be a bit too smart for me as I cannot figure out how to activate it! Anyways, the pick up was painless with no crowds at all by the mas camp. As I am going to the launch all I had to do was pay, attach my signature for collection and my TLC Card/E Ticket was given to me along with a user guide. Like the information received via email the TLC card IS your ticket to the launch as well as other TRIBE events it also comes with some other benefits as listed in the guide:
*Priority registration
*Special price tickets to TRIBE events
*Special offers/discounts at selected Sparx and TRIBE affiliates
Convenience - Load and use E-tickets for TRIBE and other events
*Load E-cash - buy food and drinks at selected events
*Invitations to exclusive events
*Greater benefits to TLC holders that attend more TRIBE events
The new "smart card" TLC is pictured above to the left of the User Guide and looks very much like the hard plastic loyalty cards you get for incentive programs such as Caribbean Miles, Magna and Hi Lo Shoppers Card with the exception that the TLC smart card is emblazoned in the TRIBE colours,. And I finally got my answer to "what happens if you loose the TLC card?" well you have to fork over $10.00 US for your carelessness in that event!
Here is hoping everyone collects or receives their card soon; if it is one thing that makes having the TLC a bonus is that it means BAND LAUNCHING IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER!!!
Bring on the costumes.. ...I can't wait!
Edited to add:
I finally found out what the issue with activation is; the system is not up and running as yet but should be good to go after 4PM today. The hot line for any TLC activation problems is 477-6534.

T.L.C. 2008?
My friend and I were discussing the merits of TRIBE’s TLC card, whether it worked efficiently or not this year and would it be wise of them to offer masqueraders the TLC card again for 2008 Carnival. Personally I am all for the TLC card, registration was a breeze for me because of it and not the nightmare that we had to endure in 2005 for the 2006 presentation. My only concern this year is who will be eligible for a TLC card. See, if TRIBE decides to award TLC cards to every masquerader who played this year, well I am afraid the band will not only be huge once again but it would be just as difficult to register as in 2005.
See, my estimation is the band was nowhere close to the average 3.500 masqueraders like the previous years, it appeared to me that TRIBE was much larger this year, possibly by 1,500 more masqueraders in addition to 750 security personnel! As a casual observer no one could miss the never-ending parade of truck after truck that made up TRIBE this year and the huge sections like Fancy Sailor and Warrior Spirit. Maybe it was the fact that the band was so large which lead to three sections being “left behind” on South Quay with no music or drinks trucks while the rest of the band was on Tragarete Road.
Therefore if TRIBE’s band leaders have any wish to decrease numbers for 2008, which personally I think would be wise considering the fact that the band was a bit too large for my liking this year, how does the TLC factor into that? Would it mean that the TLC will have to be treated as a “real” loyalty card, not only becoming a reward to loyal masqueraders but loyal masqueraders who have been playing with TRIBE since its inception? Therefore persons who played in 2005, 2006 and 2007 would be afforded the TLC card and first preference in registering.
Last year I thought the plan to have 2006 masqueraders register first was brilliant, until they started giving out TLC cards to 2005 masqueraders and having them register at the same time as those who played in 2006. I think there will be no choice this year to stagger the registration, I mean those who did not play for three consecutive years would understandably be pissed at not being treated as “loyal” but the TLC card defeats the purpose if the really LOYAL masqueraders are not afforded some type of tangible benefit in the registration process.
Honestly I do not want to be left to “fend for myself” when it comes to registration this year, and yes I may be somewhat selfish in not considering the “newbies “who might want to play with TRIBE in 2008. I know many persons gave up on TRIBE with the TLC card last year and played in other bands. But, look how long it took the band to sell out this year. Costumes were still available up until registration was closed for costume distribution. And, if you failed to register for a costume between September and February there were many, many costumes for sale on Carnival Junction. Last resort being heading to Cascadia on Carnival Sunday where the costumes of all those stranded in the U.S. due to the snow storm, in addition to costumes of delinquents like my friends, had to be sold.Point being, as a newbie there are still several avenues to get a costume with TRIBE! I am sure even if TLC cards were distributed not everyone would be using theirs and just like last year persons would register under a friend or family’s TLC card or purchase one as they were on sale by thrifty individuals as well!
So my hope is that the TLC returns for 2008 registration, and this time it is truly a LOYAL masqueraders card giving the ones who have stuck with TRIBE faithfully from it’s beginnings as a new band some “extra special” treatment.
